Try this tongue-twister: Copper Keeps the World's Wool Curled

It must be silly season, right? Wrong' It's a fact.

Shortage of copper in sheep diets causes straight wool, theAssociation of Mechanical Engineers London, England, branchtells us. Copper keeps cows and pigs fit, as well, and in Britainfarm animals have been found chewing copper pipes and eatingcopper wire to satisfy their craving.

Copper is the cat's whiskers if you should wish to put onweight - perish the thought. Calves reared on copper-treatedpasture land have shown a 20 per cent increase in weight overthose unfortunate bovines deprived of copper in the cud.

But the copper refinery doesn't have a corner on internationalinanity: A survey conducted by Madrid University shows thatcows fitted with stainless Steel teeth produce more milk than theirstandard-specification sisters because they graze better.

Highway and railroadto be relocated

An Inco proposal to relocate a portion of Highway 144 and OPRails transcontinental mainline near Copper Cliff has been acceptedby the Regional Municipality of Sudbury and by OP Rail, Sudbury.

The proposal indicates that the Ontario Division of TheInternational Nickel Company of Canada, Limited will assumefinancial responsibility for the relocation of an estimated two milesof track and 4900 feet of highway.

The relocation will allow International Nickel to extendoperations at its Clarabelle number two open pit; equipping the pitfor continued production, and the relocation of highway and railway,will call for an expenditure of approximately $8 million.

Mining of the first stage of the open pit, which works anoutcropping of the Murray mine ore body, was completed inDecember of 1974, with further minng limited by the proximityof Highway 144 and the OP Rail mainline tracks. However,preparatory development continued for the proposed extehsion.

Presently engineering for relocation is nearing completion, andconstruction is scheduled to begin this summer. nco expects theopen pit extension to result in the remova' of rock and ore over asixyear period. Resumption of ore production is anticipated for1976, at a projected rate of 3000 tons per day, with little or nochange in personne' currently nvolved.

Waste rock will, where possible, be used to fill mined areas andas was the case previously, the ore will be hauled by truck to thecrushing facity at Copper C'iff North mine, then transported by railcar to Incos Clarabelle mill

High-lights

Travelling the road that passes through the base of the superstack, an Inco tour bus pauses to unload passengers for a lookinside the huge "cavity" - there's enough room inside to parkover 250 cars! The photoelectric cell to the left of the entranceautomatically activates the stack's lights from dusk to dawn.

Problem: You have to change a light bulb. It's athousand feet away. But it's straight up-all the way.

Imagine, for a moment: it's daytime, and you're standinginside the base of the Copper Cliff smelter's 1,250-foot"superstack". It's a huge, dim cavern, with enough room tocomfortably park more than 250 cars. Over to one side is afairly small, fully-enclosed room, housing the controls for thestack's entire lighting system. And right near this control roomis a ladder. THE ladder. A continuous top-to-bottom steelladder, taller than the Empire State Building. As you tilt yourhead back to peer up the ladder's length, the surroundingdaylight eclipses and all you can see is a delicate spider webof lights that, as they get further away, become tiny pinpoints,finally disappearing into dark nothingness. These are thestack's interior lights.

Now, imagine again. It's nighttime, and you're outside thebase of the stack, looking up the column of concrete. All youcan see is a thrusting, 1,250-foot shadow of darkness thatwinks and blinks with flickering flashes of red. These are thestack's exterior aircraft warning lights.

Inside and out - a complete lighting system for oursuperstack. Ever wonder about it?

We did, and thought you might be interestedTo begin with, the Canadian Kellogg Company, the same

people who poured the staggering 43,000 tons of concretethat make up the superstack, also designed an appropriatelighting system.

To help you understand not only the lighting system,but the inner workings of the stack itself, perhaps you'd best

tax your imagination once more: all decked out in hard hat andsafety boots, with gloved hands firmly clasping both sides ofthe ladder, you prepare to climb; you've hooked yourself ontothe ladder's full-length steel safety runner by means of aspecial safety belt - and you're wondering all the while justwhere the stack's "plume" actually gets its start . . . it sure isn'tright here!

Time now for a little secret: there are really TWOchimneys, TWO superstacks! What we're accustomed toseeing is the outer concrete "shell", but as you climb, youbegin to see a dark shape looming above you. And soonyou're abreast of an inner steel "liner", through which thesmelter's gases are carried up and out; here, two incomingflues connect the main smelting operations - the converterand reverberatory buildings - to the superstack's inner liner.

En route, you notice ladder "rest stations" every 50 feetalong the way. At each, you can comfortably sit yourself down- if you should feel like unhooking from the safety runner! -and take it easy for a moment, before continuing the climb.

Further up - at the 186-foot level, to be exact - you reachthe first of eight full-circle service platforms that hug the innerwall of the concrete shell. From here, the platforms are locatedat 150-foot intervals, right up to the 1,236-foot level.

Now, into the real nitty-gritties! At each of these servicepatforms, there are six two-foot-square steel panels, or doors,in the concrete, each spaced 60 degrees apart, and to whichare affixed a pair of red-gobed obstruction lights facing out.

Solution: Would youbelieve. . . a super-long ladder!The steel panels are hinged vertically and swing inwards fromthe left, bringing the lights into the stack for easy maintenance.

Easy? Correction! It mght be easy to simply changea lightbulb, but what about that rung-by-rung climb?

In all, there are 96 exterior obstruction lights - sixencircling pairs at each of the eight service platform levels.

Interior lighting is comprised of 100-watt Vaportightlighting fixtures, beginning at ground level near the controlcabinet, then one at each of the ladders rest stations, plussix at each of the eight service platforms again, going full-circle, encompassing the stack at 60-degree intervals.

Clarke Gillen, electncal foreman, smelter area 10, isresponsible for control of the stacks lights. "It's a goodsystem the controls are all at the bottom!' says Clarke.If there's anything amiss, Clarke informs Bob McIntyre, assistantsuperintendent, smelter maintenance, who, in turn, arranges formaintenance work to be carried out. Depending on how far upthe "lights out" are, it can easily be a full day's work - or,rather, a full day's climb! - just to get to and from theproblem area.

Something to think about, next time you find yourselfcomplaining about having to change a lightbulb at home. Justask Dave Mallette, project assistant, smelter process tech-nology. His recent performance was "above and beyond" thecall of duty in that, for the first time, he surpassed his regulartrip to process tech's test station at the 267-foot level - justto help "the triangle' to get some pictures and gain some insight!

Those people who've stood in awenear the brink of thundering NiagaraFalls will tell you that "that's one longdrop".

It is. In fact, from the top of Canada'sHorseshoe Falls to the turbulent gorgebelow, the drop is 158 feet.

Very impressive, That's why it's oneof the Seven Wonders of the World.

However, did you know that we inNorthern Ontario, and more specificallyat Creighton mine, have a waterfall thatknocks the Niagara River's free-fallefforts right into a cocked hat?

It's true! At Creighton mine number

nine shaft, which, at 7,137 feet is thedeepest continuous mine shaft in thewestern hemisphere, there's a waterfallmore than 23 times the height ofHorseshoe Falls!

Admittedly, the Creighton cataract atfour inches wide is a little narrower thanthat 3,010-foot wide short-fall Niagarashowoff, but a free fall of 3,700 feet isreally something to say "wow!" about.

It all started back in 1972 when itbecame obvious to Phil Oliver, thenmine engineer at Creighton and nowsupervisor of rock mechanics, that aproposed mine water clarification station

slated for installation on the 6,800-footlevel in 1974 would create a situation thatwould result in water demand outgrowingsupply.

The mine's existing water supplysystem, installed in the mine's three, five,six and eight shafts, just wouldn't be ableto cope..

After due deliberation, it was decidedto revise an unused water line that wasalready installed in number nine shaft toboost water delivery to the lower levelsof the mine. Then the fun began.

The mine engineer had his answer

The final installation is considerablymore sophisticated than the sinkingset-up.

A substitute for the sinkers drum, andserving as a reservoir, a 100-foot lengthof 14-inch diameter pipe was installedvertically in the shaft with its bottom endat the 3,800-foot level. High and lowpressure sensors in the 14-inch pipesend electrical signals to control valveson surface, which regulates a free-fallwater supply - our 3,700-foot waterfall- to the vertical reservoir.

A fail-safe system, the reservoir hasan overflow connection installed at itstop end, and an orifice plate, located atthe metering and flow control station on

Amidst the sp'endour of pageantrydating back to the Crusades, two ncoemp'oyees, Robert NauU, a diese'oaderman at the Copper Chff South mine

and Robert Bodson, a maintenancemechanic with matte processing at theCopper Chff smefler, were recenflyhonoured with a Priory Vote of Thankspresented by Pauhne McGibbon,Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, at St.Pau"s Anghcan Church in Toronto.

For their outstanding pubUc service inattending the sick and injured, and intraining new cadets for the St. JohnAmbu'ance Brigade, the two werecommended for maintaining the traditionswhich inspired the Knights Hospitaersof 900 years ago.

U was a momentous occasion for thetwo Roberts, as this award for outstandingservice can be received on'y once intheir if etime.

FoHowing the forma' church ceremony,a reception was he'd in the LieutenantGovernors suite at Queens Park. Thefestivities were conc'uded at the ParkP'aza Hote', with a dance he'd for Brigademembers who were being simiaryhonoured from throughout Ontario.

Ray earned his wings at UpandsAirport in Ottawa. The year? 1941. Hetrained student piots on Harvards andTiger Moths, Soon after, he wascommissioned, and attached to the RAE.in Engand, engaged in fighter and photo

reconnaissance. He flew every kind ofSpitfire, the "Spit" fives, nines andelevens. He tells of plotting the dailybomb-lines through the use of remote-control aerial photography. He reminiscesover the unending conflicts betweenground personnel and air crews, particu-larly in the assessment of aerial mappingand photographs . . . problems arosefrom failure to grasp each other's difficul-ties. The ground crew demanded exactcontinuity of altitude and location inorder to do accurate mapping and pin-point bomb targets. "When we sayphotograph at 502 feet, we don't mean at500", was a normal kind of ground crewstatement. The air crews were lackingaccurate weather information, hard-pressed by enemy attacks and wereflying through cloud, wind and stormover unfamiliar terrain.

As a test pilot of Spitfires, Messer-schmidts and Fokke Wulfs for theassessment of the R.A.F. Ray attractedthe attention of the de Haviland people.This English aircraft company of worldrenown wanted our man to continue withthem as test pilot. Unfortunately, as witha good many of his fellow pilots whohad come through the war in one piece,the stresses of losing friends andterrifyingly close calls had taken theirtoll in nerves. High blood pressure and

states of acute stress disqualified manysuperlative war pilots from continuing incivil aviation.

Ray recovered from high bloodpressure in due course, but changed hisline of work in the interim. He startedwith Inco in 1946 and has stayed. He's

successfully combined his flyingenthusiasm with his job at Inco. However,he has a sneaky kind of pet thought.to have his own little Lear jet and flyoff into the sunset . . . A Lear yet?Oh it's only worth about a million and aquarter!

As good as new, after several weeks of Ken Weaver's special kind of magic, this1910 vintage carriage-mounted eight-horsepower International Harvester gasengIne is ready to do its stuff.

ReachingBack

Once upon a time, there was a little boywho had a Meccano set which hemotorized with gears and springssalvaged from an old alarm clock. Thelad's fascination for things mechanicalgrew as he grew and, in 1965, sparkedthe hobby that's kept him more than fullyoccupied since his retirement from Inco'sClarabelle open pit in 1972.

His name? Ken Weaver. His hobby?Restoring old steam engines.

Keep your eyes open the next timeyou're driving along Sudbury's WalfordRoad - you'll probably spot him in hisback yard happily working away on oneof his ancient relics of the past.

Ken grew up on a farm near Wingham,Ontario, while the transition from manuallabour to farm steam engines was beingmade, This was fortunate for Ken, themechanical dabbler, and just as fortunatefor Ken's father, who, according to Ken,"couldn't fix a door-knob". Dad didn'thave to, he had a son who did that kindof thing.

The era of farm steam engines markedthe beginning of a great love affair forKen. From the moment the first shinyengine arrived at Wingham, Ken's pulsequickened as he gazed enraptured at the

puffing, tooting, hissing contraption ofiron and brass. It was a White's threshingengine, made in London, Ontario.

With our modern-day vision, the steamengines would have appeared moredecorative than functional.

Ken would correct our view.

He'd point out that "though the ideaswere simple, they worked well - pieceswere easily mended in the family work-shop". No waiting for complicatedengine parts to arrive from distant places

To a restorer and collector like Ken,clarity and naivety of design were not theonly attraction. The smells, sights andsounds of the communal threshing beesof days gone by - the steam engineshared by 20 or 30 families - bring backvivid memories of the scenes that werepart of Ken's youth.

It hasn't been a simple task for Ken tolocate and restore the romantic steamengrnes of yore. Many He buried androtting in the bush.

It's difficult to locate the owners and,once located, quite another task to haulthe engines out.

Where there are no roads, the boiler isdragged out on skids and Ken comments

that it frequently costs more to drag theremains out of the bush than it does topay the owner the "as is" scrap price.

There are also problems of numerousmissing parts with no drawings or plansto go by. But that's part of the hobby forKen and he maintains a lively corres-pondence with other collectors with thepurpose of exchanging parts.

In several instances, Ken has scratchedhis head, perplexed over how to solvethe next reconstruction problem

In the case of the rotten spokes ofwooden wheels, he finally contacted aMennonite group who still make woodenwheels for their wagons. Another wheelproblem was solved by a late Sudburyblacksmith, Herb Gilbert, who stillremembered how things were done."With his brains, my brawn and theremnants of an old rusted iron wheel fora pattern, the problem was solved."

With enormous amounts of patience,scraping, wire-brushing and ample useof rust inhibitor, Ken completely restoresthe old gas and steam engines. When he'sthrough, they're as ready to thresh, plowor cut wood as they were the day theycame from the factory many years ago.

The Reynolds Museum at Wetaskiwin,Alberta, heard of Ken's prowess at

reconstructing steam engines andpromptly put in a bid for all or any ofhis completed works.

Ken's pleased about that, but admitsto being more than a little lost when hewatches an old iron friend depart hisdriveway.

Currently, he's immersed in therestoration of antique gas engines and islooking for a steam traction engine witha good boiler.

He also needs quite a few parts for themachines he's presently working on.Ask him what, and out pops his walletand he produces his handy-dandy list of"things I need".

In the hope that it may do Ken somegood, here are some of the items on hislist:

at Frood mine, joined the OntarioFederation of Anglers and Hunters,Algonquin Zone two, in 1969, thefederation not only gained a dynamicdoer - they also inherited an idea; onethat Armand had been nursing andmulling over for quite a while.

He wanted to organize a JuniorConservation School, and he knew thatthe planned week with an attendance of20 youngsters, between the ages of 14and 17, would cost an estimated $2,500.

They all said I was crazy", saidArmand. They wanted to know wherethe money was coming from and how thekids wou!d be chosen."

Armand tackled the money problemfirst.

Directness is one of Armand'sprinciples.

shared $7,005 in suggestion plan money,which should come in handy for all thoselast minute summer vacations.

The top amount went to Weidon Ceciie,matte processing. He collected $2,410 forhis suggestion to use low-pressure airpurge lines to cool thermocouples on thefluid bed roasters. This allows them to beused for a longer period of time betweenreplacements.

Not far behind, with a plum of $1 005,was the team of Bob Dickie and Jean-GuyRivard, also from matte processing. Theyput their heads together and came up witha method of salvaging part of usedthermocouple wells which were previouslydiscarded.

Sam Stone, machine shop, modifiedL.H.D. machine wheel rims to make themlast longer. He picked up $490 for hisefforts.

Loyal Lagrove, winding shop, designeda harness for 50-horsepower rotary drillhoist propel motors and collected $375.

At the car shop, Marco DeConti pickedup $370 for his idea to install chains to holdknuckle pins in place when ore cars aredumped.

Louis Bedard, maintenance, cashed infor $185 by designing a flexible pipe forscrap loader mufflers. Dale Richards,matte processing, picked up the sameamount for suggesting that air conditionerscrubber water be fed directly into thedischarge spray, thus eliminating the use ofa water pump.

Murray LeMay, matte processing, won$1 75 for devising a way to eliminate leakson Dorco dryer filters.

Mike Evanski, matte processing,colleoed a $165 bonus for suggesting thatfork lift trucks in the packaging section beequipped with barrel clamps.

Giiies Leduc, maintenance, wasawarded $120 for his suggestion torelocate solenoid valves inside convertercubicles.

With utilities, when he entered his sugges-tion, Ernie Hywarren proposed a by-passswitch for Dezurik valves and pocketed $1 10.

Bernard Campeau, utilities, received$105 for suggesting revisions to sewer ventpiping at the Inco Club.

Don MacLennan and Weidon Ashick,matte processing, split $95 for their idea toinstall self-aligning flange bearings onroaster gate-feeders.

Pat Riiiey, maintenance, devised amethod for easier removal of Eimco filteragitator bearings and received $80.

Bill Lefebvre and Yvon Carriere, matteprocessing, shared $75 for their jointsuggestion to install a chute and drop pipeabove the barreling line. Tom Backuspicked up $75 for proposing a strappingcontrol panel for repair of strapping headsin the matte processing department.Alcide Piante, also with matte processing,received $75 for proposing revisions to theFarval greasing system.

The lone $60 winner was RayLadurante, matte processing. He saw theneed to install a platform to service ballingdiscs.

Richard Pouiin and Terrance Pigeau,both with maintenance, split $50 down themiddle for their idea to install a by-passswitch on the bunker "C" oil pumps at thesmelter. Bill Beiowos, transportation, andKen Vance, central shops, received two

separate $50 cheques - Bill, for hiswintertime suggestion to pack the railwaytrack at number one switch with snow toprevent the track from heaving with frost,and Ken, for proposing that keeper platesbe installed on crane bearing housings.

At the $40 mark, we have LavernePitzei, maintenance, for his proposal to linethe Symons crusher chute with rails.

John Nadaiin, maintenance, pocketed$30 for his idea to jnstal stainless steelgauges on acid lines to the pump room.

There were nine $25 awards. DieterBiaffert and Joe Johnson, converterbuilding, split $25 for their idea to install aplatform at the thickener. came up with the idea of substitutingReleasall rust solvent penetrant for Plus-Gas.

Rheal Duval picked up $75 for hissuggestion to add another squeegee oneach side of the printer in the mandrelpreparation room.

Pocketing $70 was Joe Fablano fordesigning a new type jig for holding button-nickel for sampling prior to millingprocedures.

Mike Delatlnsky proposed that flangesfor pipe guards and vents be produced onthe punch machine. He collected $55 forhis efforts.

At the $25 mark, we have Rudy Bunzwho devised an improved method ofhandling magnesium blocks at the foundryadditives plant. Marcel Desmaralsreceived two $25 awards; one formodifications to the bottom of lift pins oncasting wheels and the other forimprovements to the top of lift pins.Fernand Levellie devised an improvedmethod to vent fumes in the cobaltprecipitation area, while Umberto DeliaVentura designed a new type of safety baron the anode hook used by tan kmen, BobWells received his $25 for suggestingalterations to the main block on the pump innumber three research station.

When you Pose something, chances areyou'll try to find it. But that wasn't thecase with Jean Anderson, whose hus-band, Bob, is a stope leader at Froodmine. You see, what Jean lost wasweight - not just a mere five or tenpounds, but a whopping 139 pounds.For those who are metric-minded, that's63 kilograms. But no matter what systemis used, it still adds up to a lot of lostweight.

What's her secret? It's quite simplereally, no magic formula, no specialexercises, just a little thing called willpower - or as she calls it, "want"power. "I wanted to lose weight. I wastired of being embarrassed about my size,and I was endangering my health," Jean

She didn't do it all by herself, though.A friend told her about an organizationcalled "Counterweight", so she decidedto see what it was all about. "I didn'tknow what I was getting myself into, butI knew I had to do something, so I went,"said Jean. "When I arrived, I found a lotof other people had the same problemthat I had, so I didn't feel embarrassed."

During the shedding, Jean receivedconstant encouragement from husbandBob. "He kept telling me I was gettingthinner, and that helped a lot. I don'tthink I could have done it without him,"she added.

Joffre is co-ordinator of compensationclaims in our safety and plant protectiondepartment. He presented his namesaketrophy for the first time following the FireAid Association's competition held at theChelmsford arena recently.

Joffre's always been dedicated to allaspects of safety and is a familiar faceat most of Inco's first aid competitions,either as a judge or as a spectator. He'sresponsible for setting the problem forthe A. D. Parker Shield competition.

Joffre's career with Inco started in1938, when he joined the safety depart-ment in Copper Cliff. But his interest insafety started long before that. Whileattending the University of Toronto,Joffre took a course in safety from the St.John Ambulance Brigade and was"hooked" from then on, "I always wantedto help people if they were injured," saidJoffre. "I realized that some form oftraining in first aid was necessary, andjust went on from there." He's one ofthe select few Inco employees who holdan instructor's certificate from St. JohnAmbulance, and he still enjoys teachingfirst aid when he has time.

So, a tip of the hat to Joffre Perras, aman who's not only "first in first aid" but"first with people" also.

Most people at age 62 are thinkingabout their retirement and generaHyslowing down their activities. But that'snot the case with Wilf Biron, timekeeperat the number one time office in CopperCliff. Wilf, instead of slowing down, isspeeding up. And how! He just boughthimself a motorcycle!

Wilf didn't settle for a small model, nosirree! He started right off by purchasinga 5OOcc Yamaha, and so he wouldn'tget lonely on the road, he bought hiswife, Myra, one also, but made it asmaller 9Occ model.

When asked why he bought a motorcycle, Wilf replied, 'because it was achallenge to me, and I always enjoychallenges! I never had a motorcyclebefore and I couldn't afford one when Iwas raising a family. But now that myfamily's grown up, I figured it was allright."

Wilf's taking motorcycle lessons atCambrian College and is learning theproper way to handle his machine andhow to handle minor repairs. "Younever know when your machine is goingto break down in the middle of nowhere"says Wilf. "So you've got to be yourown mechanic."

He bought the 5OOcc Yamaha just forlearning. "When I get the hang of everything, I'm going to get myself a 1 ,2OOccHarley," Wilf stated.

"And why not! Who says 62 is old, anyway!" exclaimed Wilf. "It's not how oldyou are, it's how old you feel."

Right on, Wilf - our sentimentsexactly!

Charlie goes for a Morris

What makes an antque car buff? Manypeople have had the bug for years, butit seems that more and more are actuallygoing out to acquire aging autos. CharlieBridges, superintendent of the yard andshearing and shipping departments atthe Port Colborne nickel refineryand an auto buff since 1961, says'everybody has his own reasons for

buying an antique car, In my case,scarcity was one, appreciation of thedesign, another, and the model yearplayed a part too. There's the nostalgia,certainly, but there are other things.They're light, with good motors, and havea lot of durability and dependability."

His latest adventure into the antiquebusiness occurred during a vacationin England last October. While walkingaround Richmond, Surrey, a suburb ofLondon, he saw a car in a showroom

Hmmmmm, nothing under the hood but an e,'ght-horse power four-cylinderengine. Customs inspector, Tony Pap paroni, gives the Morris the once-over while Charlie Bridges observes.

With Charlie Bridges behind the wheel and Bob Bozatto and Joe Ag/ushandling the bumper, the Morris rolls gently backwards from hisshipping crate for his first contact with Canadian soil.

window which caught his fancy. It turnedout to be a 1937 Morris eight, four-doorsaloon with wire wheels - a special dealin those days - an eight-horsepowerfour-cylinder engine with only 40000miles on it and capable of about 35 milesto the gallon. Charlie immediatelybegan to dicker with the owner, but finalarrangements were not completed untilafter he had returned to Canada.

The necessary preparations, includingsteam cleaning, a regulation of theCanadian Department of Agriculture, andshipping problems, were made by thedealer. The car was delivered to Torontoby container, where it was checked byinspectors of the Department ofAgriculture to ensure that no foreignmatter was adhering to it and thenforwarded to Port Colborne recently forcustoms clearance and unloading.

According to Charlie, "the paint andinterior upholstery is all part of theoriginal equipment. All that wasnecessary to drive it away was to put insome gas and a new fuse."

In addition to the Morris eight, Charliehas a 1931 custom-built Buick Phaetonfour-door convertible and a 1955 PackardClipper. Both, needless to say, are inperfect running condition.

Charlie is a real collector. As well asold cars, he owns 25 antique clocks,40 music boxes, 30 canes, some piecesof unusual china and an assortment ofhumidors, spitoons, and two 1974 autos."I derive an immense amount of fun andpleasure from my hobby", added61-year-old Charlie with a grin, "I guessthat's what keeps me mentally youngand extremely good natured".

By golly it's got two rear licence plates. Explanation?Sure. The top one's on a luggage rack. When therack is down the bottom one can't be seen.

As far as Joe Agius is concerned, something lust isn't right. He'sright, it's because it's on the right that it looks all wrong. It's thesteering wheel that we're referring to.

With a shotgun start at 8:30 am., a total of 54 golfing addicts wereaccommodated at the French River Golf Club. Low gross winner was John Lennie, whoshot a sizzling 78. Runner-up was Kurt Fuerness lust a scant one stroke behind John.Barb Lennie won the low net prize with an 81, while Marcel Vaillancourt had the lowestscore on the hidden hole. It was Frood Stobies second annual tournament.

For Fred, the deciding play took place at the 18th hole where he finishedlust one up on Bruce Brewer from Toronto. This is the second time Fred has claimedthe Inco trophy. It was his for the first time in 1970. Bruce Brewer had won the top spotthree times previously.

Many of you have been interviewed by,photographed by, or have seen in action,one or an other of the editorial staff atCopper Cliff.

Nows your chance to meet one of theprinting production crew - hes TedPowell, assistant composing room fore-man with the Northern Miner PressLimited in Toronto and he signed ourcover logo this month.

Northern Miner Press has printed thetriangle for us since they ran off thefirst issue for founding editor DonDunbar in 1936. Ted wasnt there in1 936, he started as an apprentice in1945, and has been involved with thetriangle since 1960.

Needless to say, Ted is very familiarwith Inco names, faces and places, sofamiliar in fact, that every once in a whilehes able to correct a misspelled nameor question an identification situationwhen your editors pen has run amuck.In other words -Ted is one of the team.

Ted lives in Scarborough, a scant twomiles from where he was born, lyeabsolutely no gypsy blood at all, admitsTed, who spends most of his summerleisure time shuttling between the big cityand Rice Lake, some 70 miles to thenorth. Give Ted a boat, a fishing rodand a hint that pickerel might be biting,and hes a happy man.

Ted and his wife, June, have a grownupfamily of four; Linda, 23, Steve, 22, Susan,20, and Sandy, 18.

For the past two years, a group ofemployees at the Port Colborne nickelrefinery have been involved in a physicalfitness programme under the direction ofJim Babirad of the safety department.This group met once a week at therecreation club for two hours, took partin calisthenics, then broke off into twogroups for volleyball and basketballscrimmaging. All exercises were aimedat improving circulation, strengtheningheart action and regaining that youthfulvim and vigour. Losing some of that

excess weight, together with a few inchesoff the old waistline, can work wonders,making a person feel and look better.

This year, at season's end, when allwere at their physical peak, with a desirefor competition burning within them, acontest was arranged to determine whoamong the sportsmen was the refinery's'Superstar".

Jim Babirad solicited the help of anall-round athlete, Gino Favero, to helpset up the competition. It was decidedthat seven events, comprising bowling,
