DESIGN FOR CHANGE Project Theme : Gnana Banddar (Store house of Knowledge)
Shree Niketan MHSS was conceived in 2006.
School has 2600 children coming from semi-urban, rural areas.
Most of them are first generation learners..
• We realized that most of the facilities that these schools did not have
were infrastructural issues that needed a huge monetary supply for
construction and maintenance. For example building structure, poorly
constructed toilets, student benches and chairs etc.,
• But we also found that they did not have a library like ours. We felt that
setting up a library in schools will have less maintenance issue and can be
kept in good condition for a long period of time. It also has a significant
impact on a larger group of children. • We found that our friends from other schools in our district did not enjoy facilities that we had at our school.
• So we decided to arrange for a school visit to all our friends’ schools to compare their facilities with ours.

Imagine
•We planned to set up libraries by asking our friends in our school to donate books. • Our target was to collect 3000 books that will benefit 2000 children based on our idea of student : book ratio of 1:2.
We also planned to collect the list of schools that were in dire need of libraries with the help of the education department.

First step
We did so by creating awareness about our project to other students in our school. We conducted special assemblies, motivational speech, skit, awarded incentives for children and classes donating the highest number of books (Field trips and appreciation certificates). We also asked our teachers to conduct slogan writing competitions for our project title.
