Every person seeks a guru in different people who mould their lives and help them to move ahead in the journey of their life. This year, Guru Pournima was celebrated with full enthusiasm in our school. A group of students conducted the assembly in which they told everyone the Significance of Guru Pournima and the Importance of a Mother in One’s Life.

This year, on the 4th of August all the students of NIS celebrated the Tai Dada Divas. All the students from Pre-primary to High school were paired with a schoolmate. All the younger children made beautiful greeting cards which were exchanged and rakhis were tied. Tiffins were shared to inculcate the feeling of sharing. SISTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMEThe journey to Canada began by asking a few students (VI and VII) to prepare a presentation on Incredible India. Further, they made puppets of people dressed in traditional Indian costumes. But the icing on the cake was the overnight camp held on 14 th and 15 th January, 2017, which was filled with fun activities like the Scavenger Hunt, Inquisitive Problems etc. Out of 30, 15 students were shortlisted after the camp, followed by an interview by I-Earn Co-ordinators and PTA members after which finally 10 were selected. Even the selection process added many gold coins to their treasure chest of memories. Soham Laghate, Aditi Paranjpe, Shubham Aphsangi, Sejal Deshmukh, Animesh Karnik, Isha Bhagat, Janhavi Laturkar, Devika Deshpande, Manushree Bihade and Megha Kale were the ten students who got a once in a life time opportunity to visit Canada on a Sister School Programme. They were accompanied by the Director of our school, Dr. Sunita Bhagwat, Principal of Primary Section, Mrs. Devaki Sutar and the teacher Miss Sheetal Konde Deshmukh. On reaching Canada they were taken to Wyevale School, in Tiny, a small town

about 200 miles to the north of Toronto. Everyone was accompanied by their host families, to go to the Maple Syrup Festival. All the students and teachers visited different places in and around Wyevale with their respective host families. The students worked on the project ‘Carbon Footprint’ along with their Canadian counterparts for which a survey with 200 students was conducted at NIS. They also gave a glimpse of the Indian culture through presentations on different states of India. They had a video conference with Arviat Nunavut (a school in North Canada). The places they visited in Canada were THE NIAGARA FALLS, THE CN TOWER AND THE RIPLEYS AQUARIUM. The students performed a traditional Indian dance and sang a patriotic song in the farewell assembly. They also gave the presentation of their ‘Carbon Footprint’ project. The Canadian students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the Indian Cultural Programme and appreciated the efforts put in by the students. The Sister School Programme helped the students to assimilate in their culture very well, and take a comprehensive study of their lifestyle.

Communication using Twitter made a big difference to the students and teachers

One of the organizers was Mali Bickley, a retired teacher who works with an international organization called

IEARN, the International Education and Resource Network and consults with Taking it Global, an organization that connects students in projects that address global issues. Mixed teams from both schools(Wyevale and NIS ) worked together to create prototypes to help reduce carbon footprints like a solar cooker, paper bags out of newspapers and reusing plastic to create a jewellery stand. The students of Wyevale are always involved

in online collaboration but this was the first time international counterparts had physically come to Wyevale. Mali Bickley says, “We saw first hand the power of collaborations and how the students were taking the issues about Global Warming and organically they learnt so much about each other’s country. For e.g., things like patterns in traffic. Wyevale is completely different than Pune but they all realized that they can make appositive impact.
