HERE’S THE SCOOP…

We have two fundraisers coming up in September and I would love to have your support. Our Friends Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for Meals on Wheels will be on Friday, September 9th from 4:30-7:00 p.m. in Bartsch Hall in the Center. We will have all you can eat Spaghetti with salad, garlic bread and dessert for $9.00. Kids 11 & under - $5.00. All proceeds will go to our MOW program that provides lunch to our 40 homebound seniors seven days a week. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who give their time to dish up the meals and deliver them to the senior’s homes. We could not do it without them.

Our second fundraiser, Bucks for Buses is on Wednesday, September 21st from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Overtyme Grill and Taproom on Dixie Highway. See front page for more information on this fun event. I want to thank all of our sponsors for supporting this program. Our Honorary Chair is Chris Strong from Waterfall Jewelers. Please see insert in this newsletter to participate in their Watch Battery Program.

SENIOR CENTER ADVISORYIndependence Township Senior Adult Activity Center Advisory Committee. Meets on the second Wednesday every other Month starting at 9:00 a.m.: meetings are September 14 and November 9, 2016. This group is approved by the Township Board to represent the Center and to offer input and support into the centers operations and programs. SENIOR CENTER MEMBERSHIPYour membership is valid from the date you sign up until a year from that date. Couples should sign up at the same time. Our membership fees are: $12.00 a person for residents. $22.00 a couple for residents. $17.00 a person for non-residents $32.00 a couple for non-residents.Residents are persons who live in the Independence Township Community. All new members will receive a bi-monthly newsletter with their membership along with a one time welcome package that includes a $5.00 coupon that can be used towards a class or program. Your membership also entitles you to discounts on all of our programs and classes. By participating in a couple of programs your membership will pay for itself. All of our programs and trips reflect member and non-member fees.

RENTAL OPPORTUNITIES IN CLINTONWOOD PARK

The Carriage House in Clintonwood Park is available for rent on some evenings and weekends. The building includes a 20 foot wide x 70 foot long community room that can seat 70 people, a full-sized kitchen, and two handicap accessible bathrooms with baby changing stations. What a perfect place for that birthday party, anniversary, or baby or wedding shower!! The cost is $45 per hour for Independence Township Residents and $65 per hour for non-residents. Senior Community Center Bartsch Hall is available for rent on some evenings and weekends. This large hall is 32 feet wide by 50 feet long and can seat up to 100 people. Rental includes use of commercial kitchen with gas stove and handicap accessible bathrooms. The cost is $55 an hour for Independence Township Residents and $75 an hour for non-residents. Availability is on a first come first serve basis. The returnable security deposit is $100 payable by check or credit card. Call the center at 248-625-8231 to inquire on available dates. All reservations must be made in person and paid for in advance.

LOOKING FOR LUNCH?THURSDAY SITE LUNCHES AT 12 NOON!We are serving a made-from-scratch lunch prepared by our senior center staff every Thursday unless indicated on the schedule. The cost is $7.00 per person. Call the Center to make a reservation for lunch no later than 5 p.m. on the Monday preceding the scheduled date. If you do not reserve your meal we cannot guarantee that one will be available for you on Thursday. All meals meet the Area Agency on Aging standards for proper portions of protein, grains, vegetables and fruit.We are serving organic, low sodium and unprocessed foods whenever possible. All meal contents will be labeled with the following codes: C=corn, D=dairy, E=egg, G=gluten, N=nut and S=soy. Bread and or crackers will still be served in baskets with butter on each table and are NOT gluten or dairy free`.

A MATTER OF BALANCE – FALL PREVENTION Managing Concerns About Falling Tuesdays, September 13 – November 1 10:00 – 12:00, $15.00 p.p.

This eight-session course is sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging and led by two trained instructors. We are what we eat! Confused about food labels? Wondering about proteins and carbohydrates? Interested in new recipes? Join us for this 6-week nutrition class geared toward seniors. Topics will include Reading a Food Label and Guidelines for Seniors, What is a Carbohydrate?, Proteins to Build Upon, Healthy Fats, Vitamins, Minerals and Drug Interactions and Putting It All Together for Daily Meal Planning. Each class will include a healthy meal for all participants to sample. A registered nurse with a background in nutrition will demystify food labels, demonstrate healthy meal preparation and answer your nutrition questions. Call the Senior Center to register!

Learn about what is new with hearing aids, telephones and other devices to cope with hearing loss. A technician from Costco will discuss hearing aid technology and is available to conduct hearing assessments. A representative from Clear Captions will describe the 100% federally funded telephone program designed for those with hearing loss which provides a caption telephone, caption service and installation. Learn about who is eligible for Medicare, how to enroll and what services are covered. Information about supplemental insurance, Advantage plans, the prescription drug benefit and identification of fraud will be addressed. Call the Center to register to attend!

Our knitters make newborn and chemo caps among other charitable knitted and/or crocheted items. The hospitals we donate to are very grateful for our donations. We are continuously looking for additional help to keep up

with the demand. Meet for coffee, conversation and needlework or stop by and pick up some patterns for our community projects. Novices and experienced knitters welcome. The knitters are also making items for the senior center to sell; all proceeds from the sales will go into the “Friends of the Independence Township Senior Adult Activity Center” account. Sunday after church, a mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, “Don’t be scared, you’ll get your quilt.” Needless to say, the mom was perplexed. Later in the day the pastor stopped by for tea and mom asked him what that morning’s Sunday school lesson was about. BLUE CROSS LEGACY MEDIGAP PLAN UPDATECurrent Legacy plan enrollees should have received letters about changes that will be effective beginning January 2017. The BCBSM Medigap Legacy plans will base plan rates on age, gender, and geography. Everyone will still be accepted regardless of health status. A subsidy will be available for those individuals at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level. Applications for the subsidy will be available beginning October 1st.

COMMUNITY IMPACT WEEKENDA Community Impact Weekend will be coordinated by Calvary Lutheran Church on November 5th and 6th. Volunteers will be assisting seniors in our area with fall yard work and working on a variety of projects during this weekend. Consider volunteering to help make a difference in your community! HOMEBOUND MEALS ON WHEELSHot meals are available seven days a week to older adults 60+ and to people with short or long term disabilities living in Independence Township and Clarkston. The OPC Senior Center in Rochester provides this service to Independence Township and Clarkston through a grant with the Area Agency on Aging 1B, general fund support from Independence Township and donations.

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUPIf you or someone you know has low vision, contact Patty Collins at the Senior Community Center to learn more about this program. The group meets monthly for either socialization or educational presentations. Transportation is provided for residents of the City of the Village of Clarkston, Independence and Springfield Township.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT LOAN The Senior Community Center has walkers, canes, commode chairs, shower seats, wheelchairs and other items to loan out. MEDICARE PART D OPEN ENROLLMENTOctober 15th – December 7th It is time to review your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan! Open enrollment for Medicare Part D and advantage plans begins October 15th and ends December 7th. During this time you are able to review your current plan and make changes for 2017. Because plan costs and medications do change, it is a good idea to review options each year. Appointments with Patty, a Certified Medicare/Medicaid Counselor, are available to provide information and to assist in reviewing your coverage options. Due to high demand, scheduling of appointments for members, Independence Twp., Springfield Twp., and the Village of Clarkston residents will begin September 1 – 30. Scheduling of appointments for other individuals based on availability will begin October 3.

MINOR HOME REPAIR PROGRAM This program is designed to help low income households to complete repairs of no more than $5,000 to a single unit residence. There is no cost to you! The repairs can include replacing furnaces, water heaters, roofs and other minor repairs. To qualify, you must be a resident of Independence Township or the City of the Village of Clarkston plus: 62 years of age or older, Disabled Adult 18 or older (disability documents required) and or low income and the owner of the home in need of repair. Assistance for other home repairs that do not qualify under these programs may be obtained by calling Oakland County’s program at 248-858-5401.

Wednesdays, September 7 and October 59:00-11:30 a.m. at the Senior CenterBasic nail care, trimming, treatment of ingrown nails, calluses, corns and pressure sores plus more complicated foot problems. Treatments are covered by Medicare and other insurance. HMOs are not accepted. If you are unsure of your insurance coverage, please call Dr. Tabak’s office at 248-628-1880. SENIOR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM• Wheelchair transportation available• Van Service Available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.• All appointments need to be scheduled no later than 12:00 p.m., day before ride and are subject to availability.• Curb to curb service anywhere within Independence Twp., Springfield Twp. & Village of Clarkston. • A cost share of $3.00 each way is suggested totaling $6.00 round trip, • Medical appointments for Doctor’s Hospital, McLaren and St. Joe’s in Pontiac are subject to availability and are $5 one way/$10 round trip suggested cost share. • SHOPPING TRIP - Meijer/Great Lakes Crossing Mall every other Tuesday. Pick up between 9:30-10:30 a.m. Pick up from Meijer at 1:30 p.m. $6 per person.• All new riders must complete a medical form before their first ride and will receive a copy of the Transportation Policy. Our transportation service is funded through the Independence Township General Fund, Community Development Block Grant funds, Municipal Credits and Specialized Services, riders’ donations, fundraisers and other donations. EYEGLASSES The Lion’s Club coordinates the collection and distribution of used eyeglasses. These items are used for low-income individuals who cannot afford to purchase eyeglasses. Bring your donations to the senior center to help others. If you are in need of assistance to obtain glasses, call Patty at the senior center.

DENTAL PROGRAM-OAKLAND COUNTY HEALTH DIVISIONThe Oakland County Health Division Dental Program serves the basic dental needs of low-income residents who lack dental insurance. It is not a dental insurance plan. Program recipients are provided an evaluation and a course of basic dental treatment. Registration fee (once qualified) is $15 per family. DISCOUNT DENTAL PROGRAMThis program is designed to help uninsured/underinsured individuals save on dental care expenses. This program is not insurance. OLHSA-WEATHERIZATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FREE energy conservation services for eligible low-income households are available to help reduce energy usage and lower utility bills.
