    LENS TO THE FUTURE

If the future of the built environment lies in the hands offearless architecture g raduates like the Royal College of Ar ts Andr Samp aio Kong , its foundations a re about to be shaken.A theatre for the post-tragic condition of subverted capitalisttechnologies, muses Kong, referring to The Hack Circus, hisgraduate showcase recently nominated for the RIBA SilverMedal. The Hack Circus is a critique of current technologies, which are masking rea l climate change under the g uise of aseamless, virtually augmented continuum of triv ialdelights, he explains.

Reactin g to a d igitally media-ted surveillance society,Hack Circus proposes a radical, social-libertarian, self-sustainable community, leveraging itself off existing hardware,

hacking alternatives, unlocking their full potential and going beyond the nar row limitations of ecolog ical design.Rethinking the role of technology in a rapidly evolving

design landscape, Kongs organic although extreme approach demonstrates the kind of thinking required tosustain a marriage between architecture, technology and thenatural envi ronment.

    WORDS ANNA GUERRERO

    FOCUS ON FORM

How important is form in design? Floralia, a ower vase by Eragatory, uses form to create motion, orchestrated through the use of 3D printingto achieve harmony between functionality, organic beauty and digitalaesthetics. Engineering rm Arup t akes this concept to an industrialstage, creating bespoke 3D-printed steel construction joints to achievemore efficient structures, a development it believes signals a wholenew direction for the use of additive manufacturing in the eld ofconstruction and engineering. In a more hands-on approach, Dutchdesigner Pepe Heykoop turns to the humble hands in some of thepoorest areas of Mumbai, India, operating a studio teaching menand women how to produce high-end design with l argely recycled

materials in var ious organic forms.

LOOK TO NATUREArchitecture is a tool to protect and promote birds, wildlife and nature, proclaims Tormod Amundsen, Master Architect and CEO of Biotope. Branded as Norways rstand only architectural office with special expertise on birdsand birdwatching, Biotope engages in pro-nature projectsincluding birdhides, shelters and nature trails, andproduces exhibitions and arranges educational workshops.

Describing Biotopes niche projects as challenging, Amundsen explains that his rms phi losophy isredeemed by its ability to use arch itecture to enhancethe understanding and experience of the naturalenvironment. In many cases I think what architecturelets you experience should be g iven much more focus thanthe building designs themselves, Amundsen explains.

As we continue to ob ser ve the cons tant g rowth ofthe built environment due to rising populations andtechnology, Biotope provides a refreshing means to give and look back to nature.

    INSPIRED BY THE EARTH

As consideration for the natural landscape and its inhabitant s increaseswith new technologies making sustainable design more feasible, so too hasnatures ability to inspire architecture and design. Ho Chi Minh City-basedVo Trong Nghia Architects explores this concept through its bamboolotus-inspired pavillion, based on the beauty and growth cycle of Vietnamsnational ower. In Bligh Tanners award-winning installation design, theanatomy of the human body is called upon with a cochlear-inspired design, using Corten, stainless steel and rock to ground the design back to nature.Planexs new Storage Guide includes office furniture that facilitates theinstallation of indoor greenery, while Casamania calls on its gre en thumbto create a table with subtle reference to a wheelbarrow.

COLOUR INIn 1974 Llus Clotet and Oscar Tusquets conceptualised theCatalano bench, which went on to become a keynote designfor the then-new chapter of outdoor fur niture. Its success lay with in the v irt ues of steel, which created a n uns urp assableergonomic aesthetic and resilient form. In celebration ofCatalanos 40th anniversary, Axalta Coating Systems hascreated four bright versions in pastel tones, to give a new li feto the celebrated design. In terms of memory and perception, humans are incredibly receptive to colour. In fact, u sing colourto animate design and photography is a popular technique, asseen in the latest product campaigns from At Work* With Camira,Nolan UDA and Pedrali.

WOODEN NARRATIVES An i ncredible qual ity of wood i s its abil ity to embed narrat ivesinto design. Exploring this concept, we turn to products andspaces that use wood to instil emotion, dene an aesthetic, orserve a sustainable purpose. In the case of Bruns Acoustics: Wesalvage timbers that have fallen in storms or non-native spe ciessuch as C amphor Laurel t hat have bec ome a threat to our nativeforests. For Japanese brand, Apato, the Sky Deck balcony tableis Torafu Architects rst design for Ishinomaki Lab, a communi-ty workshop, and was built by the people of Ishinomaki after the2011 tsunami. Or, in the case of A dam Markowitzs Fred Table, the design was conceived after Markowitz studied in Denmark,

and is imbued by the modernist simplicity of Danish masters suchas Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl.

TAKE A SEATFrank Gehrys architecture draws its strength from the sculptural approachfrom which he has expanded the vocabulary of buildings. Bringing this sameapproach to furniture, Gehry constructed the Bentwood collection withinterwoven strips of Maple, based on the srength of apple crates. The ribbon-like designs transcend the conventions of style by focusing on the essentialchallenge of deriving form from function. The result is a structurally andaesthetically light masterpiece. With this complexity of form in mind, wetake to furnitu re from Chair Solutions, CULT, Healthezone and Prototype toconsider how the function of a chair from work to lounge is largely a resultof its design aesthetic.
