Welcome Letter
Dear prospective Delegates and honorable members of the Secretariat,
It is my sincere honor and pleasure to welcome you to the first edition of Alma Model United Nations 2016 powered by UNLAB (with the contribution of the University of Bologna), taking place during October 26th – 29th in Bologna, Italy. Organizing a MUN at the University of Bologna is particularly meaningful for various reasons. Our Alma Mater Studiorum established in 1088 AD is the most ancient university of the Western world and, on a more personal level, the conference will mark the achievement of the principal aim for which, as first year students, we decided to create AlmaMUN Society – that is to enable the flourishing of the MUN community in Italy and to share the values and the work of the United Nations among young students. For this first edition, we will gather around 50 passionate young people simulating the 3 principal organs of the UN, in particular: the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Our objective for the MUN conference is that participants realize how important cooperation is in such an interconnected world and that the UN is the only international forum where the most pressing issues of the international community can be discussed involving all relevant actors. Besides, we want to go further in making you, delegates, reflect on how youth can be part of the solution to international issues given the many new ways for involving young people in the decision-making process at all levels. For these reasons, this year’s general topic is “Youth Reshaping Institutions: new rights for global challenges”. Such topic is unprecedented because you will not only explore international issues wearing the shoes of diplomats and looking at the new emerging rights, but you are asked to explore how youth can be more involved in decision making processes in order to reshape public institutions and organizations. Hence, we encourage you to see yourself not only as stakeholders to consult, but to engage in your role as drivers of change. We are looking forward to seeing you at work during the conference. I send to you my kindest regards,
Giuseppina De Marco Secretary-General AlmaMUN 2016

Bologna and AlmaMUN
The city of Bologna, which is the capital of the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, is one of the country’s most important cities, especially under a cultural, artistic (and culinary) point of view. The seventh most populous city in Italy, Bologna is commonly known as “la dotta, la grassa, la rossa” (“the learned, the fat, the red”).
“Dotta” as it hosts the oldest university in the Western world (the Alma Mater Studiorum of Justinian’s Roman law, founded in 1088 AD by Irnerius legis doctor) as well as one of the most prestigious in Europe. As a consequence of its fame worldwide, Bologna’s city life is characterized by an intense dynamism due to the massive presence of students coming from every part of Italy and all five continents.
“Grassa” as the reputation of Bologna’s culinary specialties has been well known since the Middle Ages, and throughout history has distinguished itself for plenty of typical products that every human being should try at least once in a lifetime, such as delicious tortellini, ragù, lasagna, mortadella, crescentine, and much more.
“Rossa” as virtually everything is red here in Bologna, from the beautiful medieval buildings to the cutting-edge architectural projects that this enchanting city has to offer to its visitors.
The towers and the arcades make the Bolognese atmosphere unique, symbolizing a city that is proud of its past but looks straight into the future.
AlmaMUN 2016, powered by UNLAB, both funded and sponsored by the University of Bologna and sponsored by the City of Bologna, is the first Model United Nations ever held in the city.
