WELCOME LETTER Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I feel honored to have the responsibility to chair the IUNS 21st

International Congress of Nutrition to be held in Buenos Aires, October

15th – 20th, 2017.

The Sociedad Argentina de Nutrición (SAN) will be in charge of the

Congress management. This renowned society was founded in 1941

by the scientist Prof. Pedro Escudero, pioneer in Latin America.

For ten years the SAN has been working together with Nutrition

Societies of the Southern Cone, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay and Chile in the field of Nutrition Quality

Education in medical schools, as well as joint activities with other scientific related societies.

The IUNS 21st International Congress of Nutrition (ICN) is a four yearly meeting that’s been held since

1946. Its 21st edition will be based in Buenos Aires for the first time in its history.

It is my pleasure to invite you to experience this vibrant multicultural metropolis designated “City of

Design” by UNESCO. Its wide range of cultural scenarios will amaze you.

We are currently designing the scientific activities according to the motto “From Sciences to Nutrition

Security” with the aim of encouraging the exchange of knowledge in order to achieve the improvement of

Nutrition Security.

We intend to focus on every aspect of nutrition issues going through a wide variety of topics which will be

dealt with from different perspectives in order to enrich our attendees’ points of view.

Let me mention the pillars of our preliminary programme:

1. Advances in Nutrition Research

2. Nutrition Through Life Course

3. Public Health Nutrition and Environment

4. Nutrition and Management of Diseases

5. Nutrients and Nutritional Assessment

6. Functional Foods and Bioactive Compounds

7. Food Culture Practices and Nutritional Education

8. Agriculture, Food Science and Safety

Our main goal is to offer you a high-level meeting focused on addressing the key aspects of nutrition in a

multicultural environment, from state-of-the-art reviews to cutting edge nutritional science information.

We hope to cover all your needs in 2017 and we are looking forward to giving you the warmest welcome.

See you soon in Buenos Aires! Dr. Mabel Alicia Brígida Carrera President of the IUNS 21st International Congress of Nutrition (ICN)

The City - Buenos Aires

History

The City of Buenos Aires was founded twice. It was first founded in 1536, when the Spanish colonizer

Pedro de Mendoza established the first settlement. He named it ‘Ciudad del Espíritu Santo y Puerto

Santa María del Buen Ayre’ (City of the Holy Spirit and Port Saint Mary of the Good Air). The second and

final foundation was made by Juan de Garay in 1580, who named the city 'Ciudad de Trinidad' (City of

Trinity).

During the second half of the nineteenth century, the port was the point of arrival for the big immigration

wave promoted by the Argentine State to populate the nation. Spanish, Italians, Syrian-Lebanese, Poles

and Russians engraved on Buenos

Aires that cultural eclecticism which

distinguishes it.

Throughout the twentieth century,

successive internal migration from

Latin America and the Orient made

Buenos Aires a cosmopolitan city,

where people from different cultures

and religions live together.

Climate

The City of Buenos Aires has a mild climate all year round. With an average annual temperature of 18 °C

(64 °F) and just a very few days of intense heat or cold, Buenos Aires can be visited at any time of year.

The coldest month is July. Although frosts are rare, it is recommendable to go out with a wool coat, a

jacket or overcoat and scarf. In winter the cold is moderate during the day, but at night the temperature

drops considerably. In summer the heat is humid. Mornings are warm, while around midday and early

afternoon temperatures rise significantly. At night, the heat decreases slightly, so fresh and light clothing

is used and there is no need for coats.

Page 12: Index [icn2017.com]icn2017.com/docs/dossier.pdf · Index Index ... Dr. Lynnette Neufeld ... Dr. Irina Kovalskys B.S. Marcela Leal Dr. Gabriela Levitus B.S. Pilar Inés Llanos Dr

12

The wettest seasons are spring

and autumn (March to June and

September to December).There

are mild or brief showers that do

not affect the various activities

available and you can walk down

the street with an umbrella or

raincoat.

On sunny days of autumn and spring, mornings are cool, around noon the thermometer rises to a nice

temperature and drops again at night.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of the City of Buenos Aires is the result of ongoing encounters between different

products and ethnicities. Here is where the countryside and the city merged, the longstanding settler and

the recent immigrant, the European and the Native American. These culinary fusions are taking place

since colonial times and gave the Food of this city its very own characteristics.

This is why dishes such as stew,

roast, pizza, pasta and the

Hispanic rice meals, coexist with

the Arabian kebbe, los Milanese,

Vienna sausages, French

patisserie and the recent Asian

dishes. This amalgamation has

been forming a vital and dynamic

cuisine, which is still forging its identity.
