Creep of engineering materials and of the Earth
A Discussion held on 24 and 25 February 1977
Organized by A. Kelly, F.R.S., Alan H. Cook, F.R.S., and G. W. Greenwood
The hot deformation and fracture of solids are phenomena of wide scientific interest controlling our use of machines at high temperatures and limiting their efficiency. These phenomena also relate closely to an understanding of geological processes of earth movement such as the motion of tectonic plates, continental drift and creep phenomena at geologic faults. This book contains papers presented at a Royal Society Symposium in February 1977, which discussed how the mechanical engineer produces constitutive equations to predict the flow and fracture of metals, how the geologist measures the rate of movement of large earth masses, how the materials scientist understands flow and fracture in terms of atomic mechanisms, and how examination of dislocation structure can be used to deduce the history of some rocks. Phenomena from room temperature and ambient pressure to temperatures up to 2000° and pressures up to 3 x 109 Pa are discussed. The results and discussion are of interest to geologists, geophysicists, materials scientists and mechanical engineers.
