About Major Indian Cities

New Delhi

New Delhi is the capital city of India. Airport: Indira Gandhi International Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o It is the main airport for the country.o The airport is located in the western part of the city and is well connected to the heart

of the city by the Delhi Metro, cabs and auto-rickshaws.

Railway Station: New Delhi Railway Stationo The railway station is located just outside of Paharganj.o The station is located well within the city.

Transport options within the city:o The Delhi Airport Metro Express (DAME) is a Delhi Metro train line from New Delhi

Metro Station to Dwarka Sector 21, passing through the airport. Its operating timings

are from 5AM-11PM every 20 minutes (as of April 2011).

o The one-way fare between the airport and New Delhi Metro Station is INR 80. Thejourney time is 20 min.

o There are also public buses to and from the city throughout the day and night.o Others: Taxi, Auto rickshaw, cycle rickshaws

Language:o The main local language is Hindi although English is widely spoken as the city is the

National capital.

Mumbai

Also known as Bombay, it is the economic capital of India and is located in the state ofMaharashtra.

Airport: ChhatrapatiShivaji International Airport- INTERNATIONALo It is the busiest airport in the country.o The airport is 28 kms from downtown and can be easily accessed via a prepaid or a

metered taxi, auto-rickshaw, bus or the sub-urban rail.

o Regular taxis, cab services, auto-rickshaws, intra-city buses, suburban rail and/or ferriesare available.

Language:o Marathi is the state language.o Hindi and English are widely spoken.

Bengaluru

Also known as Bangalore, the city is located in the state of Karnataka. It is popularly calledGarden City. Airport: Bengaluru International Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o The airport is located in Devanahalli, 40 kms (25 miles) from the central business districtof Bengaluru (MG Road) and 30 kms (19 miles) from the Bengaluru City Railway Station.

o The most hassle-free way to commute is by taxi. Railway Station:The Bengaluru City railway station & Yeswantpur Junction

o The Bengaluru City railway station is situated in the heart of the city, opposite to theMajestic Bus stand.

Transport options within the city:o Bengalurus Namma Metro, auto-rickshaws, city taxis, intra-city buses (air-conditioned

buses are also available) are some popular transport options available for commuting

within the city.

Language:o Kannada is the local language.o English is spoken all over the city owing to its corporate nature.

The city is the IT Capital of India and houses a huge number of IT industries. The city houses numerous institutes of national importance. It is also a popular shopping destination.

Hyderabad

Also known asCity of Pearls, Hyderabad is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Airport: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o It is located 22 kms from the city.o The airport is connected to the city by three major roads.o Air-conditioned buses run by the airport (Aero Express) can be availed to reach various

destinations such as Begumpet, Secunderabad, Hi-Tec City, Charminar and

Mehdipatnam.

o Metered air-conditioned radio cabs can also be hired. Railway Station: Secunderabad Railway Station

o Others stations: Hyderabad Deccan Station, Kachiguda Railway Station and BegumpetRailway Station

Transport options within the city:o Hyderabad's light rail transportation system is known as the Multi Modal Transport

System (MMTS) and is one of the best ways to travel within the city.

o Intra-city air-conditioned buses are also available in the city.o Taxis, Auto-rickshaws are also available.

Ahmedabad

The city is located in Gujarat, one of Indias most industrialized state. Airport: SardarVallabhbhai Patel International Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o The airport is located 15 kms from the city centre and 8 km from Ahmedabad Railwaystation and Bus stand.

o International flights operate to New York / New Jersey, Muscat, Kuwait, Dubai, DohaQatar, Sharjah and Singapore.

Railway Station:Ahmedabad Railway Station (ADI) Transport options within the city:

o Intra-city buses, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, taxis etc are available. Language:

o The local language is Gujarati. Hindi is also used, although not widely.o English is also used by a fair number of people in the city.

The city is home to the Gandhis Sabarmathi Ashram. It boosts an interesting cultural mix. Gujarat is famous for its cuisine.

Pune

Pune is located in the state of Maharashtra, near Mumbai. The city is considered as the Biotechnology hub of India. Airport: Pune International Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o The airport is in Lohegaon, which is around 10kms from the city center, and takes about30 minutes - 1 hour to reach.

o Currently, international flights operate only to Dubai and Frankfurt. If getting a directflight proves difficult, then taking a flight to Mumbai and then traveling by taxi or train

to Pune is a feasible option. A long-distance private taxi journey should take around

three hours and costs about INR 1600.

o Daily express trains connect the city to Mumbai.o Buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws can be availed to commute within the city.

Pune is known for its educational facilities and has well-established manufacturing, glass, sugar,and forging industries, information technology and automotive companies setting up factories in

Pune district.

Jaipur

Jaipur is also known as Pink City. It is the capital city of Indias largest state- Rajasthan. Airport: Jaipur International Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o The airport is situated in the satellite town of Sanganer, at a distance of 10 kms fromcity centre and offers sporadic service to major international locations.

Railway Station: Jaipur Railway Station Transport options within the city:

o City buses & Jaipur Bus Rapid Transit Service, taxis, autos, and shared cabs are sometransport options.

Language:o Hindi and Rajasthani are the most common language for communication.o English, Punjabi, Sindhi are also widely spoken.

Vadodara

Also known as Baroda, the city is located in the state of Gujarat. Airport:Vadodara Airport- DOMESTIC

o The city can be easily accessed by road or rail than by air, owing to the lesser volumes offlights flying into the city.

o The nearest international airport is about 100 kms away in Ahmedabad. Railway Station:Vadodara Junction Railway Station

o It is the busiest station in Gujarat. Transport options within the city:

o Buses, taxis, ferries, and other common modes of public transport can be found here.Language:

o Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi and English are the languages spoken in the city. Intercity Buses leave every 15 minutes to Ahmedabad, taking 2 hours on the expressway.

Bhopal

Bhopal is also known as the City of Lakes It is located in Madhya Pradesh, Indian central state. Airport: Raja Bhoj Airport- INTERNATIONAL

o The Airport is located near the satellite suburb Bairagarh and has flights to most majorcities in India.

o It has recently become an international airport and has very few flights operating. Railway Station: Bhopal Junction Railway Station & Habibganj Railway Station

Language:o The main languages are Hindi and Urdu.o English is also spoken at many places.

Noida

Noida is located in the NCR (national Capital Region), adjacent to New Delhi. NOIDA is short for New Okhla Industrial Development Area. Airport: None

o Nearest International airport is New Delhis Indira Gandhi International Airport. Railway Station: None

o Nearest railway station is New Delhi Railway Station. Transport options within the city:

o The best way to reach Noida is to take buses or the Delhi Metro from New Delhi.o Noida is well connected to New Delhi and Agra by road.o Others modes of transport includetaxis andauto-rickshaws.

Language:o Hindi and English are the main languages here.

Noida is part of the National Capital Region and is famous for industries and othermanufacturing facilities.

The city is a planned one and also houses several institutions of national importance.Chandigarh

Chandigarh is the only city in India which is the capital of two states- Punjab and Haryana, and isthe capital of the Union territory of Chandigarh as well.

Airport: Chandigarh Airport- DOMESTICo The Chandigarh airport is being integrated with the Mohali international airport;

although at present the airport caters to only domestic needs.

o The traffic of trains passing through this station is extremely low and the best way toreach the city is by road/rail from New Delhis Railway Station.

accessed.

Language:o Hindi and English are spoken here.

Gurgaon is the industrial and financial hub in the region.Patna

Patna is the capital city of the state of Bihar. Airport: Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Airport- RESTRICTED INTERNATIONAL

o The airport is located 5 kms to the southwest of the city.o The airport is classifies as a restricted international airport.o The nearest international airport is the Gaya airport which is located in Gaya, Bihar and

has flights operating to and from Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Thailand, Myanmar etc.

o The closest international airport that will connect the passengers to major internationaldestinations is the Lucknow airport located at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh and the Kolkata

airport located at Kolkata, West Bengal.
