TETRA – Ideal for various needs

• Congestion free, reliable, fail‐safe, secure communications

• Meets Public Safety requirements

– Emergency Response: Police, Ambulance, Fire

– Security: Airports, Refineries, Hotels

– Transport: Metro Rail, Buses

• Interoperability between Infrastructure, Networks and Terminals

User needs have evolved

• Data that enables

– Instantaneous sharing of information

– Real‐time situational analysis

– Instant broadcast of critical alerts

– Collection of vital information viz. surveillance, medical

Increased usage of Rich Data

• Integrated solutions involving Rich Data

– Mobile access to centralised databases

– CCTV cameras for urban surveillance

– Video cameras for Face recognition

– Video recording and streaming on demand

TEDS is “just around the corner!”

• 2nd Gen. TETRA (TEDS) being developed

• Multi‐carrier platform with TDMA carriers

• Adaptive selection of modulation and coding

• Various agreed modulation schemes and carrier bandwidths (25, 50, 100 and 150 kHz)

• However, still short of meeting new needs!

– Tetra 1: Max Data rate 28.8 Kbits/s

– Tetra 2 (TEDS): Max Data rate 160 Kbits/s (2010)

Thales TeMax – THE Solution!

• TETRA 3 – TETRA with WiMAX (TeMax)• Thales has leapfrogged TETRA 2 and gone straight to TETRA 3

• Achievable Global throughput of 20 Mbps per transceiver

• Average throughput of 2 Mbps per subscriber– 1000% greater than TETRA 2 (TEDS)

Page 8: India2009 Ravi Kumar Nagalia

TeMax – Advantage WiMAX

• IEEE 802.16e ‐2005 for mobile services is an approved Open Standard

• Strong support – Wimax Forum has 500+ members

• IP based, with a large supplier base• Strong competition and cheaper equipment• WiMAX complements TETRA, meets the increased data rate requirements– Network, VOIP, Web Browsing, File Transfer, Streaming Multimedia (Video Conferencing)

TeMax – Comparison

Page 14: India2009 Ravi Kumar Nagalia

TeMax – Multiplies TETRA benefits

• High availability TETRA is designed to carry on working, even through disasters– Capacity is always available, even during a public emergency

• Less equipment to carry Voice and data applications on the same radio

• User benefits from high level of security for all data traffic– No need to worry about which applications are allowed to use which data service

– No need to worry that users might be sending sensitive information over unsecured data services

• Owner/Operator benefits from high QoS, integrated N/W Mgmt, common platform for statistics, fault management, provisioning, etc.

Page 15: India2009 Ravi Kumar Nagalia

TeMax – An Unbeatable Solution

• Huge advantage by combining TETRA & WiMAX; both are:– Proven technologies– IP based and follow Open Standards– Offer seamless integration

• Ideal technology to future proof TETRA users– Existing TETRA PMR applications can be used – Present TETRA infrastructure can be used with available WiMAX terminals

– Leverage legacy investment with minor costs• Scheduled release 2010
