LE PEN LOSES IMMUNITY
EUROPE REELS UNDER FLOODS
MUGABE CALLS EARLY POLLS
Over two dozen people have been killed and several
thousands of others aff ected in what is being pegged as possi-bly the worst Central Europe fl ooding in the past seven dec-ades. Earlier this week, at least a dozen people were confi rmed dead in Czech Republic alone where as a dozen others were reported missing. Meanwhile the fl ood led to emergency evacuation in other Central
An ultra-right member of the European Parliament
(MEP), Marine Le Pen, has been stripped off her immu-nity from prosecution over xenophobic remarks against Muslims. According to Swed-ish MEP Cecilia Wikstrom, the Legal Aff airs Committee fi -nally voted in heavy majority to strip the leader of the French National Front off political im-munity for making remarks that compared Muslim praying
in the streets to “Nazi occupa-tion,” a couple of years ago. “For those who want to talk a lot about World War II, if it’s about occupation, then we could also talk about Muslim prayers in the streets,” she had said. Le Pen had added that “there may not be any tanks or soldiers, but it is nevertheless an occupation.” Several Liberal MEPs have tried in the past to strip her immunity but it was only made possible this year.
US Army Private Bradley Manning has been put on
trial in the State of Maryland earlier this week, more than 38 months aft er he was arrested in Iraq. Th e trial of the 25-year-old began at Fort Meade mili-tary base over charges of espio-nage, including passing thou-sands of classifi ed documents
South African President Mugabe has maintained that he will follow the court order to hold the country’s election before the
end of July, much to the chagrin of his opponents. In an interview, he stressed that he will call polls “not later than July 31.” Last week, seven out of nine Constitutional Court judges ruled that Mugabe has breached the law by not declaring polls before June 29.
to the website WikiLeaks. In February, Manning admitted to the charges but refused to call it “espionage”. He added that he wanted to start a debate on the role of the US military and foreign policy including its “bloodlust” and complete disregard for human life in Iraq and Afghanistan.

INTENTIONS. TEESTA SETALVAD, ARUNA ROY AND ARUNDHATI ROY ARE CASE STUDIES OF HOW.
C O V E R S T O R Y

At fi rst glance, the headline and the photographs might make you think of an irresponsible fantasy. As one colleague put it, the words and ideas have been simply conjured from behind the safe shadows of a comfortable arm chair! But then think again: what are the three critical problems that India faces on the domestic front in the 21st century? Th e fi rst is lift ing about 500 million Indians from abject poverty. Aruna Roy has done remarkable work in this area for almost four decades. Th e second is waging war against the cancer of communalism that threatens the very foundations of our society. Teesta Setalvad has been waging war against communalism for more than a decade. Th e third is the disruptive manner in which exploitative crony capitalism is threatening Indian democracy. Arundhati Roy, during the course of her passionate and outspoken struggle against this, has seceded from the Indian Republic way back in 1998.On the face of it, all three represent ideas that are critical for the very survival of India. Why, then, are they disruptive for India? Th e fact is: the three are symbols of an insidious mindset that is resulting in tragic consequences for India. Th ey represent a "my way or highway" approach to problems and their solutions that brooks no dissent and no diff erence of opinion. Aruna Roy seems to think poverty can be eradicated without growth; Teesta Setalvad refuses to accept even considered judicial opinions if they diff er with her world view of who and what is communal and Arundhati Roy fi nds not a single redeeming feature in Indian democracy. Isn't it time for people like them to engage in a honest and non judgmental debate over India's future?
