HISTORY

Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) was registered on November 3, 1967 as a Multi-unit Co-operative Society.

During the 1960s the cooperative sector in India was responsible for the distribution of 70 per cent of the fertilizers consumed in the country.

To overcome this difficulty and to bridge the demand supply gap in the country, a new cooperative society was conceived to specifically cater to the needs of farmers.

The Society is primarily engaged in the production and distribution of fertilizers

PRODUCTION AND SALES

During the year 2007-8 IFFCO produced 68.47 lakh tones of fertiliser material; registering overall capacity utilization of 94 percent for nitrogenous and 58 per cent for phosphatic fertiliser.

The society has recorded an all time high turnover of Rs. 12163 crore and harvested a pre tax profit of Rs. 380.52 crore during the year 2007-08 .

IFFCO has promoted several institutions and organizations to work for the welfare of farmers, strengthening cooperative movement, improve Indian agriculture. Indian Farm Forestry Development Cooperative Ltd (IFFDC), Cooperative Rural Development Trust (CORDET), IFFCO Foundation, Kisan Sewa Trust belong to this category.

IFFCO, today, is a leading player in India's fertiliser industry and is making substantial contribution to the efforts of Indian Government to increase food grain production in the country.

The distribution of IFFCO’s fertiliser is undertaken through over 37,000 co-operative societies

The number of co-operative societies associated with IFFCO has risen from 57 in 1967 to 38, 155 at present.

It is a joint venture between the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Co-operative (IFFCO) and its associate and Tokio Marine and Nichido Fire Group, the largest listed insurance group in Japan.

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited is planning to invest INR 50,000 million in 2009 in doubling the production capacity of its plant in Gujarat.
