Spring Street Indian Festival

To conduct a series of activities highlighting the culture and traditions of India. These included:

lessons on Indian arts and crafts professional development for the staff fundraising activity for Akshaya Patra school-wide Indian Festival. This project was influenced by my studies and travel with Primary Source.Rangoli design created and designed by community volunteers

This project was possible by of an Arts Grant from Target. The grant was written by Barbara Luby and Sally Lividini

Staff and students made soup bowls that were sold for a small donation to support the work of Akshaya Patra. This served the purpose of increasing awareness of the issue of poverty in India and promoting our schools core values.

Each grade created artwork based on the arts and crafts of India Kindergarten Henna hand designs Grade 1 made designs based on the interior mosaics in the Jaipur Sheesh Mahal Grade 2 created paper dolls dressed in traditional Indian clothing Grade 3 drew small animal pictures in Madhubani style Grade 4 painted Miniature paintings with a Jaipur government seal and interested 4th grade students did several before school projects.

The

Target grant along with the hard work of many parents and staff created an event to remember.

All guests were met by student greeters, reminding me of the students who greeted us at the schools we visited on our Primary Source sponsored tour of India.

The parents not only used their contacts in the community but shared clothing and artifacts to bring a taste of India to our school.

Students had their picture taken in Indian clothing. Later, the Taj Mahal was digitally placed in the background by a Spring Street School alumnus.

Spring Street students participated in before school dance classes and learned several Indian dances.

Grades 1 and 2

One of the students did a traditional religious dance from Southern India for the audience.

A parent, student and teacher fashion show was the finale of the days events.
