Benefits of Summer Reading

It sounds simple; children need to read during the summer months to maintain current reading levels. It's more than common sense though. There are sta-tistics that support the importance of summer reading. When that last dis-missal bell rings at the end of the school year, there are two schools of thought. The students are thinking of sleeping in and long, lazy days watch-ing T.V. or playing games. Parents and teachers are thinking of how they are going to stop summer learning loss. The quest then is to merge those two summertime plans of action. Summer reading is for keeping your child read-ing and academically active during the summer months.

The benefits to readers in a summer

reading program include:

Encouragement that reading become a lifelong habit

Reluctant readers can be drawn in by the activities

Reading over the summer helps children keep their skills up

Any reading program can generate

interest in the library and books Visit the Library on a weekly basis Have your child read newspapers,

magazines, signs, brochures, etc. Make family trips educational for

everyone!

Be Kind Trait of the Month : BE HELPFUL

This month’s Be Kind trait is

Be Helpful.

According to Dictionary.com

Being helpful means to give help or assistance, and to support someone else.

Page 2

Here are some examples of ways you can be helpful: When you are a helpful person, you do whatever you can to help others by making it easier for them to do a job or by helping them find solutions.

Many ways we can be helpful in our classrooms, schools, and homes. Everyone needs a helping hand some-times. Ask, “How can I help?”

Help at home with chores

Help at school by offering support to friends

Help the Earth by recycling

According to the Environmental Protection Agency the following are things to be aware of and ob-serve: The following people are at greater risk of ill-ness if air quality is poor, due to wildfire smoke: elderly young those with diabetes, pregnant women.

Living in Northern Arizona makes living with wildfire smoke a reality- especially in the late spring and early summer months. Nearly every year, the quality of the air we breathe is com-promised because it is filled with smoke from wildfires. While some people are not bothered much by this smoke, others experience real medical challenges because of it. So, what should people be aware of and how should they deal with the health risks of wild-fire smoke in the air?

If you have a heart or

respiratory health con-dition, talk with your doctor.

Get frequent reports on the air quality from ra-dio, television, or inter-net resources.

Limit any activity that

increases your breath-ing and heart rate.

Call 911 if you experi-

ence any heart or breathing problems.

The 3 and 4 year old preschoolers watched caterpillars develop through their life cycle into butterflies. I was fun using magnify-ing glasses to look at them up close. Then we released the butterflies. They flew away without incident of becom-ing a bird’s snack.

The staff at Indian Wells

Elementary hosted the final family night of the year on

Thursday, April 19th. Despite

the wind, approximately 150 family members came out to

enjoy a night of fitness games, a gardening demo, and

smoothies.

Attendees and staff members participated in relays, throwing stations, knock out, junk in the truck, and soccer mania. The activities varied in ability level

so everyone could have a chance to participate in at

least one activity. The gym was full of movement!

Staff members also had on display various gardening

techniques and families were invited to plant seeds as a

make and take activity. Wins-low Indian Health Care Cen-ter’s Nora Bia, also brought her wealth of information re-

garding the prevalence of childhood diabetes and the

importance of healthy eating.

Finally, the smoothie station

was booming the entire night!

Indian Wells Elementary staff

members worked tirelessly to

provide tasty fruit

smoothies to all

attendees. The line was

out the door and around

the corner but the

smoothies were definitely

worth the wait!
