INDIANA COUNTY WOODTURNERS ASSOCIATION ICWA meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Sprowls Hall, IUP Campus. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm, refreshments available between 6:30 and 7:00 pm. V VOLUME 4 ISSUE 9 JUNE 16, 2013 OLUME 3 ISSUE 6 Last Meeting of the Year The last meeting of the year, was held on May 15 at the Kiski School. Andy Scott was the presenter. Andy’s agenda included turning without a tailstock and a tool rest (?), chain saw use and safety, and demonstrating his wood mizer. When Andy said he was going to do a demonstration of turning without the aid of a tailstock or a tool rest, I thought he left all his marbles in his classroom. I’ve turned, as I expect most of us have, without a tailstock, but NEVER without a tool rest. In fact all the beginner literature emphasizes the fact that you never, ever turn without a tailstock. I was anxious to see how he was going to do this. And me without my firstaid kit. Not knowing what he was about to do, I watched as he mounted a long, narrow blank into his chuck. He reached for this instrument and proceeded to, yes, turn without a tool rest. Basically what Andy was doing was creating a dowel. He had a set of dowel cutters that would allow different size dowels to be turned. Now, I’ve seen those things in catalogues but never had seen them in action. They work great. Andy showed us how he sanded them, very innovative. Next we went outside to get the chain saw and wood mizer demonstrations. Andy recapped for us who are chainsaw users and informed those of us who haven’t used them about proper use and safety when using this potentially dangerous tool.

Last Meeting of the Year The last meeting of the year, was held on May 15 at the Kiski School.

Now, I’ve seen those things

in catalogues but never had seen them in action. They work great. Andy showed us how he sanded them, very innovative.

Next we went outside to get the chain saw and wood mizer demonstrations. Andy recapped for us who are chainsaw users and informed those of us who haven’t used them about proper use and safety when using this potentially dangerous tool.

Andy basically discussed what to do and what not to do with the chainsaw. He showed the preferred method of cutting a log to obtain the most optimum bowl blank and how to mount the blank to create both a natural edge bowl, and a standard round bowl. Very well done, can’t get too much info on safety. Next Andy showed us his wood mizer, and cut some lumber to show how it worked. He offered his mizer services to us with a proper amount of notification due to his summer work schedule.

All in all, it was a very interesting and well don demonstration. Thanks again Andy. Well, that about wraps up the spring 2013 season. I want to wish everyone a safe and fruitful summer. Come back in September all refreshed with a bunch of new ideas and freshly turned artifacts. The September meeting will be held on September 10, 2013 at our usual place in Sprowls hall unless things change between now and then. As always, if there is a particular program you would like to have presented, please tell one of the officers and we will see what we can do. Oh, let me extend congratulations to Daryl Gray for her becoming the interim Vice President. Congrats, Daryl. See you all in September.
