On September 7th, IMHC members gathered for a casual fall social gathering

at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino in Anderson, Indiana. While the board

meeting took place, some members took advantage of the casino for fun and

games. The group took a tour of the backstretch before the races got started.

(See FUN Facts for more on the tour.) Saturday was also Family Fun Day

with an antique tractor display, various giveaways, and yummy treats like

free corn on the cob and watermelon. Racing started at 5:30 and the races ran

every 13 minutes leaving everyone just enough time to cash in and place their

new bets before another round of racing. It appeared everyone had a different

betting strategy from following a winning jockey to the horse’s previous wins

to picking a favorite name sight unseen. Races alternated between pacers

and trotters throughout the night and a lot of discussions took place about the

different tack required for each gait. Either way, it’s always a thrill to stand

right next to the finish as they pound over the line!

Hoosier Park Social Gathering Anderson, IN

Fun Facts

(as learned on our tour)

• Approximately 830 horses live

on the Backstretch.

• It takes 120-130 horses to fill

races each night.

• Race purses vary from $8,000

to $400,000.

• Horses typically have 7-10

days between races.

• Horses typically jog 4-7 miles

per day while in training.

• Hoosier Park hauls out a semi

truck full of manure each day

and is considered one of the

cleanest tracks in the US.

• Horses must report to the

paddock barn 3 hours before

each race for testing and observation.

• Drug tests are administered to

1st, 2nd, and one random horse

following each race. If in

violation, life ban is in effect.

• Hoosier Park has onsite

dorms, kitchen/restaurant,

medical facilities and private tack shop.

• Four onsite blacksmiths are

employed as horses go through

shoes approximately every two

weeks.

• Standardbred and

Thoroughbreds require

different surfaces to race. This

is why they frequently are at

separate racing facilities.

Standardbreds race on very

little cushion.

• Horses toward the inside of

the track usually have an

advantage because the

distance they travel is

actually shorter than the

other horses.

It's almost time! AMHA membership renewals for 2014 will be mailed to all 2012 and 2013 members starting mid-October. Be looking in your mail box for exciting NEW membership benefits! Your membership counts and is highly valued. Thank you for your continued contribution and interest in AMHA and the Morgan horse. Membership renewals are due by January 1 every calendar year.

A Call to Action: USEF Equine Disaster Relief Funds

Historic flooding across Colorado has destroyed thousands of homes and farms. Thousands of horses have been displaced or are stranded across 4,500 square-miles of flood-ravaged terrain. This area is densely populated with horses, including many large breeding and training facilities all along the Front Range. Hay and feed are being airlifted to hundreds of stranded farm owners and delivered to hundreds more in dire need of feed for their horses. Recovery from a disaster of this magnitude will be arduous and ongoing, but not impossible. We need to remember that when the flooding stops, the recovery is only beginning. In times like these, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) calls on you to aid fellow horse owners by donating to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund.

With the support of USEF CEO John Long, we ask that equestrians, equestrian fans, and all people who share a love for horses make a donation to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund. These recent storms have struck the heart of Colorado's horse country and have made the cost of relocating, feeding, and caring for horses overwhelming. With your help we can do our part to make sure horses are not overlooked, forgotten, or abandoned, and help to relieve the burden of affected horse owners and caretakers in this, and in future, times of crisis. This fund was established with the goal of delivering aid in the most effective manner possible. "It is important to understand this fund is a dollar in and a dollar out," says Long. "Nothing is withheld." Any donation to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund equates to timely and efficient help for horses and horse owners.

Originated during the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was formed to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of horses during trying times. Money donated to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund is used to prepare for disasters and assists any breed of equines that are victims of disasters, including but not restricted to hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards and fires. The USEF holds money donated to the fund in an account restricted for this purpose, and funds can only be disbursed upon the authorization of the USEF Chief Executive Officer. Donations may be made online at www.usef.org

If you wish to contribute by check, please make it out to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund and mail it to: The United States Equestrian Federation, 4047 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511.

New AMHA Award

A new AMHA award was established at the third quarter AMHA Board of Directors meeting in August. The Mabel Owen Media Award recognizes a person or group in the media (written, photographic, print, video, electronic) with a documented body of work that has contributed above and beyond in providing content, adding to the public's ability to learn about, enjoy, and record for posterity activities involving the Morgan horse. If you have a person or group you would like to nominate for this award, please submit a summary of the nominee's accomplishments by November 1, 2013. Nominations can be mailed to AMHA, Attention: Awards, 4066 Shelburne Road, Suite 5, Shelburne, Vermont 05482; or faxed to (802) 985-8897.

Combined driving is friendly to all breeds and it is no secret that the

Morgan is a favored competitor. Most breeds were represented with one or two entries. There were six Morgans competing and one Morgan cross. Many drivers have switched from horses to ponies.

Just a few years ago there were only a handful of ponies competing. At our event this year there were 26 single ponies! Three of those were Morgans. This should interest those Morgan breeders who

have smaller Morgans. (John and I have also switched to smaller Morgans).

Sunday, John and I were at the start of "A" or the beginning of the marathon. This gave us a chance to meet each of the Morgan teams

as they headed out. Every Morgan owner beamed with pride as they talked about their horse! There were two Morgans from Indiana competing and we know both personally.

One of those competitors is Deb Ivins of Franklin Indiana. She had a friend who brought Chance (Loess Hills Second Chance) to her

and asked her to get him back into driving. This friend had jus acquired several Gypsy Vanners and they needing training. Soon Deb worked out a trade and and has been riding and driving him for

the past year and a half in return for starting her Gypsy in harness. This was only his third CDE. Their scores have consistently improved with each event. She competed in the Training Single

Horse against a competitive class of 10. Not only did she win her class she also won the high point Morgan award!

This was Debs first Morgan I asked her what she think of the Morgan breed? "I think they are wonderful!" "They have a nice

mind and are willing to please". It is not surprising to hear Deb is currently considering finding another Morgan.

The 2013 Indiana Combined Driving

Event Submitted by Kitty Clarahan

John and I volunteered this year at the Indiana Combined Driving Event which drew

54 entries from 14 states, as far away as Arizona and Florida. This show has a reputation for being friendly for competitors

and volunteers alike which makes it a popular show to attend.

The weather Friday and Saturday was hot enough that the judges authorized wearing of

jackets optional. Saturday evening we had a nice thunderstorm which dampened the dry ground and cooled things off for a pleasant

marathon day Sunday. Photo by Elaine Wall [email protected]

Attention new (and renewing!) members, don’t forget to take advantage of your free classif ied ad by contacting Sara Rhodes [email protected] today!

Good Luck in OKLAHOMA!

Good luck and safe travels to all those heading for the Morgan Grand National in October! Hoping for a great pattern for Kaecee Dollard in the Medal Class!

You’re riding what??

Dave Hicks was spotted in September riding something that WASN’T a bicycle!!! While he usually spends most weekends (and weeknights) ’in the saddle’, it’s usually on two wheels. Dave and daughter Sara Rhodes’s horse, Ancan Second Nature, took a spin around Potato Creek State Park. They even made it past the scariest of trail obstacles: a donkey.

Speaking of Donkeys..

Madeline Higgins, granddaughter of Vicki Higgins, is equal opportunity when it comes to loving her horsey(ish) friends. ‘Esmerelda’ is just one of many lucky residents at Mad’s daddy’s farm, Higgins Stables, in Michigan.

Adoption or Foster?

Update: Last month, we emailed the club about a stallion found in southern Indiana to see if he could be identified. The original owner was located, however, is not in a position to take him back. This stallion, Remy, has been well taken care of since being found last month. Unfortunately, the rescuer already has a stallion and has decided she cannot keep two at her farm. From what we know, he is a very well behaved, easy to handle stallion. He picks up his feet, loads well, doesn’t mind his mouth or ears being messed with, parks out, etc. She’s been told he is broke to death, but due to his current weight, they haven’t been on him. She’s put a saddle and pad on him with no problem. The photos below show him in his younger years, as well as when he was found and earlier this month. Kim Dollard has been in contact with both the rescuer and Forever Morgans, but is waiting to hear back about their involvement. If anyone is interested in adoption or could offer temporary foster care for Remy, please contact her.

Upcoming Book (For Grades 5-8):

Fosta: Marathon Master (True Horse Stories Series) By Judy Andrekson

Excerpt from Amazon.com: If nature had taken its course, Fosta would never have lived. But thanks to quick and loving intervention, the plucky little foal did survive...From the very beginning, his chances of amounting to anything were horribly slim. Added to that, it didn’t look as if he would ever be big enough for racing. Yet Fosta has become one of the best-known horses ever to run Australia’s grueling “ultimate endurance test,” the Shahzada. For five days, the toughest and fastest horses compete internationally to cover four hundred kilometers of rugged terrain. The motto of the event is “To Finish is to Win,” and Fosta has finished an incredible ten out of eleven starts, making him one of the most consistent and enduring horses of all time. Here is his story, told so that readers will feel they are atop Fosta as he attempts to earn his last completion buckle.

As the weather changes, it's always a good time to do a little check in on your barn, equipment, and your medical kit. If you keep your horses at home, spend a fall afternoon that's too nasty for riding inspecting the premises. Check your door latches, fence posts and stall boards for rot and deterioration and replace any fixtures that may be in need of repair. Replace your old light bulbs with compact fluorescents now for energy savings in the dark of winter. Drag you water tank heater and extension cords out of storage and give them a test run-before you really need them. If you haven't started blanketing your horses yet, now is the time to check that your horses' blankets fit and you have the proper weight blanket for each horse.

How does your first aid kit look? After the busy summer and fall season, replenish your kit for winter by making sure you have the following: Working thermometer, Iodine Solution, Hydrogen Peroxide, Neosporin or other antibiotic cream Non Steroidal anti inflammatory such as Bute and/or Banamine, sterile, non-stick gauze, elasticon wrap (or Vet-Wrap), cotton balls, sterile alcohol, injectable tranquilizer (and knowledge of how and when to use it), clean standing wraps and quilts.

In addition to the first aid kit, it's a good idea to keep a "health tools" kit in a safe place that is easy to find. The kit should include an easy boot, bandage scissors, wire cutters, pliers, twitch, hoof pick, extra halter and lead rope. Once you have your kits assembled, store them in a safe, easy to access place.

We went to the Salamonie River State Forest this spring and there was such an overwhelming response to return

in the fall that we decided to schedule another ride. We are excited because we rode all day and still didn’t get to

see nearly everything! The Fall October 5th Trail ride is going to be a scenic ride in a less well known area of the State Park. Please do NOT look up the directions on the internet because I have not been able to find accurate

ones yet. Even the address on the IN.Gov site will not get you there. You will get directions but they will take

you to the more traveled, less interesting side of the park.

The state forest will give us some great scenic rides along ridges and along the Salamonie Reservoir. We will also

ride through a walnut grove and can ride to the lower side of the dam. There is a waterfall and lots of shade. The

trails can be rocky but are safe. Shoes are recommended if your horse has tender feet. However, only a few of our

horses will be shod.

Horse tags will be needed which will last for the year. These are $20 per horse and I can purchase in advance if

you plan on coming (everything is based on an honor system as they do not sell tags there). Cost is $5/per horse

which I can purchase in advance as long as I know who all is coming.

Please pack a meal and beverages to drink along the way. Pack snacks to share. We will have two

sets of arrival times. For the early birds, plan on arriving around 8:30am. For those who have a

further drive, plan on arriving around 10:30am. I will meet both groups at camp. If we have enough riders, will split into groups for those who like a slower more enjoyable ride and for those who like

the adrenaline rush (kids).

Coming from the North: Start out going South on SR 13. Take a left on SR24 and travel 2 miles. You will see

a sign indicating Lagro. Turn right onto 524 and go 2 mi to reach Lagro. Follow 524 and cross the railroad tracks (Right) at the gas station in Lagro. This road will be labeled Davis Street in town. Stay on 524/Davis and continue

through town and then on out.

Once you leave Lagro, the road (524 and 355E) will veer right. Follow 524 and 355E.

SR 524 is also called Davis, 355 E, 500 E, and S America Rd. You will follow this road out of Lagro for about 3 to

4 miles of winding road. The state park will be marked with a large wooden and brick park sign out front and
