For OpenersIndiana State is 75-41 in season openers as they prepare to open up the 117th year of col-lege basketball on Friday night at UCLA. The Sycamores won each of their last three lidlift-ers, two of which came at home and one on a neutral floor. The Sycamores have not won a season opener on the road since 1970 when they opened the season with a victory at Purdue. ISU has dropped each of last 13 season openers on the road.

Against The PAC-12 ConferenceIndiana State is 1-4 all-time against the current membership of the PAC-12 Conference, and are facing off against the league for the first time since taking on Southern California on December 21, 2004 in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. ISU’s lone victory against a PAC-12 member came in 1946 when they Sycamores downed Oregon. The Sycamores have also played Arizona State and Washington State in previous seasons. Indiana State is playing their first game in the state of California since Dec, 30, 1950 when they played two consecutive road games at San Diego State.

Sycamores In Postseason Play For Third Consecutive SeasonWith Indiana State’s appearance in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, the Sycamores have now made three consecutive trips to postseason play. ISU played in the 2010 College Basketball Invitational as well as the 2011 NCAA Tournament in addition to the CIT Tournament in 2012. The last time the Sycamores reached postseason play for three consecutive seasons came in 1977-79 when Indiana State played in the 1977 & 1978 NIT as well as the 1979 NCAA Tournament. The last time Indiana State hosted a postseason game came on March 10, 1978 when the Sycamores hosted Illinois State in the first round of the NIT.

Jake Odum Named To The Preseason All-Missouri Valley TeamIndiana State guard Jake Odum was one of five student-athletes named to the Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference Team on October 29. Odum finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 4.9 assists per game average. That mark was ranked 61st nation-ally. Odum recorded a career-high 12 assists against Fairfield as part of the Old Spice Clas-sic, a number which ranked tied for fourth all-time at ISU in a single game. Odum is third in the MVC in steals per game with a 1.8 average, which ranks 81st nationally. Additionally, Odum’s 4.5 assists per game average of his career is fifth-best in the history of the pro-gram while his 119 steals are ranked ninth-best in the Sycamore record books, while his 1.8 steals per game average ranks third.

Sycamores Picked To Finish 7th In Missouri Valley Conference RaceThe Indiana State Sycamores were picked to finish seventh in the Missouri Valley Confer-ence race according to a poll of league head coaches, sports information directors and a media panel. ISU finished eighth last season, with an 8-10 MVC record, just one game out of a large logjam for third place at 9-9.

Lots Of New Faces On The RosterIndiana State lost four senior starters off of last season’s 18-15 team which advanced to the quarterfinals of the MVC Tournament as well as the CIT Postseason event. The Sycamores have eight new faces on the 2012-13 roster, including junior college transfer Mike Samuels who broke his foot during a Bahamas Exhibition Trip in August and is expected to miss the first portion of the regular season.

Indiana State Posts Three Exhibition Victories In The Bahamas In AugustIndiana State took advantage of the NCAA rule allowing teams to participate in a foreign tour of exhibition contests once every four years when they travelled to Nassau, Bahamas from August 12-14 and defeated the Giants 95-76, the Real Deal Shockers 116-75 and the PJ Stingers 76-55. Manny Arop scored 17 points to lead ISU against the Giants, while Da-won Cummings had 18 to pace the Sycamores against the Real Deal Shockers. The Syca-mores were led in the final exhibition game of the tour by Lucas Eitel who scored 15 points versus the PJ Stingers.

Jake Odum Posts Career-High 34 Points Against Illinois StateJake Odum scored a team season-high 34 points against Illinois State on February 14, giv-ing him six consecutive games of reaching double figures scoring and marked the sixth 20-point game of his career. Add in his seven assists and seven rebounds, Odum is the first player to go 34-7-7 in the NCAA this season. Odum is the first college basketball player to post 17 made free throws and seven assists in the same game since North Dakota State’s

An Indiana State Win Over UCLA Would ...• Give the Sycamores their first-ever victory over the Bruins, in just the second all-time meeting.

• Give Indiana State four consecutive victories in season opening contests.

• Be Indiana State’s first victory in a season opener on the road since December 1, 1970 when the Sycamores won

at Purdue, 84-82, and break a string of 13 straight times that ISU has dropped its season opener on the road.

• Improve the Sycamores to 3-0 under head coach Greg Lansing in season opening contests.

• Improve the Sycamores to 2-4 against the current membership of the PAC-12 Conference, and its first since

downing Oregon in 1946.

• Give the Sycamores a win over a nationally-ranked program for the first time since a December 17, 2011 victory

over No. 25 Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.

Ben Woodside did it in 2008 against Stephen F. Austin. Odum’s 34 points marked the first Syc-amore with a 30-point game since Marico Stinson’s 37 points in December of 2006 against Drake and is the fifth-highest single game performance in the MVC this year.

Indiana State Reaches 17 Regular Season Victories For Third Consecutive Season; First Time Since Larry Bird Era With its 59-46 victory over Missouri State on February 22, the Sycamores have now posted at least 17 regular season victories for the third consecutive season, which is the first time three Indiana State teams have reached that mark in succession since the 1976-77, 1977-78 & 1978-79 seasons. The Sycamores won 25 in 76-77, 19 in 77-78 and 26 in 78-79.

Sycamores Set Three NCAA Records For 3-Point Shooting Against Southern IllinoisIndiana State set a trio of NCAA records as part of its 78-68 home court victory on February 11 against Southern Illinois. The Sycamores were a perfect 12-of-12 from 3-point range, which is the most 3-point makes and attempts in a single-game without missing a shot ever amongst all levels of NCAA competition. The best previous NCAA Division I perfect game from 3-point range belonged to Minnesota who was 9-of-9 in 2009. Additionally, the Sycamores 12-of-12 mark from behind the arch is the best percentage for a team with at least 10 attempts, best-ing Ohio State’s 14-of-15 mark on March 6, 2011 and the 12 made 3-pointers in a row is the most consecutive 3-pointers made in a single-game by one team since 1987. ISU’s 64.1 per-cent shooting mark (25-of-39) is its best overall shooting percentage in a game since 1992.

Good Starter On The BatteryIndiana State was 12-5 last season when the Sycamores’ starting five outscored the oppo-nents’ starting five. ISU’s starters outscored the opponent’s twice against Louisiana-Monroe and against Green Bay plus Texas Tech, Fairfield, Maryville, Evansville, Northern Iowa, South-ern Illinois (twice), Illinois State and Missouri State this season and won. ISU starters out-scored Minnesota, Boise State, Missouri State , Wichita State and at Bradley, but fell to each. Under third-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 24-7 when the ISU starting five scores more than their opponent’s counterparts.

63 Is The Magic NumberThe Sycamores win by the score of 66-51 vs. Southern Illinois on March 1 was ISU’s 11th last season in which they held an opponent to 63 points or less and earned the victory. ISU fin-ished the 2011-12 campaign with an 11-1 mark when holding an opponent under that total. Under third-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 26-1 when allowing less than 63 points to the opposition (including a 12-0 mark when holding teams to 53 or less).

Sycamore Success Inside Hulman Center Under Greg LansingThe Sycamores are 21-7 (.750) inside Hulman Center under third-year head coach Greg Lan-sing. The Sycamores have won 12 of their last 16 home games. Additionally, the Sycamores have won 13 of their last 18 MVC games at home.

Sycamores Down Nationally-Ranked Vanderbilt On The RoadIndiana State’s win over No. 25 Vanderbilt was its first over a nationally-ranked opponent since a 72-64 home court victory over No. 14 Butler on December 9, 2006. The win over Van-derbilt was the first for the Sycamores over a nationally-ranked road opponent since a 63-60 win over No. 15 Indiana in Assembly Hall on December 12, 1999. The win over Vanderbilt was also the first by a Sycamore team over a member of the Southeastern Conference since a 1984 home court victory over the Commodores.

Triple-Double For Odum And Tournament Record To BootJake Odum battled a foot injury while playing three games in four days at the 2011 Old Spice Classic. After two solid performances in the first two days of the event, Odum saved his best for last as he posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists against Fairfield on November 27. That triple-double was the first by a Sycamore since Larry Bird posted one in 1979 versus Drake and the first by a member of the MVC in 14 seasons. Additionally, the 12 assists are an Old Spice Classic single-game record. His 12 assists is the first double digit assist total in his career and the first by a Sycamore since Michael Menser had 11 against Wichita State in 2001.

Up NextThe Sycamores open a two-game homestand on Tuesday, November 13 when they host Win-throp at 7:05 p.m. (ET).

MVC OVERALL

The Last Time Out ...

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State junior RJ Mahurin poured in a game-high 21 points off the bench as the Syca-mores came back from an early deficit to defeat Lewis, 79-66, in front of 3,625 fans inside Hulman Center. “Lewis is a good team with good players, well coached by a friend, Scott Trost,” Sycamore head coach Greg Lansing said. “They exposed some things. We can be a good team, but we still have a ways to go with our maturity. It is good for us that Lewis made a run and that made us perk up in the second half. Our guys are working hard, but I feel like we have still have a long ways to go in certain areas.” Mahurin hit 9-of-14 shots from the field in scoring his 21 points in 15 minutes of action. He added two blocked shots in the game.

“RJ can score and we are going to have to get this type of production from him this year,” Lansing said. “He is a good helper on defense and leads the team in charges taken. He did a good job at times, but he is like everyone else -- we need fewer mistakes.”

Dawon Cummings was 4-of-8 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, with six rebounds, six assists and five steals in 29 minutes of action to score 12 points. Khristian Smith tallied 10 points with seven rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes of action.

“All of the new players did not some nice things in the game,” Lansing said. “It is the mistakes that we have to clean up. It is early, but that is not going to be an excuse here in a week when we go to UCLA. We are in this together. We have to keep improving, but I don’t want to keep harping on how young we are all year.” The Sycamores blazed the nets for a 52 percent shooting percentage in the first half (13-of-25) and finished the contest with a 26-of-56 mark, good enough for 46.4 percent. ISU won the rebounding battle by a 39-31 margin and had 20 assists on the night. Indiana State held a 38-24 advantage in the paint and used 15 Lewis turnovers to score 16 points while the Syca-mores were able to push the ball in transition, scoring 16 fast break points. The Sycamores raced out to an 8-0 lead in the game’s first four minutes, as Jake Odum scored the first four points of the contest. Lewis answered with a 13-0 run of their own as they held the Sycamores scoreless until Manny Arop converted two free throws at the 12 minute mark to cut the Flyer advantage down to 13-10. Lewis held the lead at 19-16 until Mahurin drained a 3-pointer with 7:44 remaining in the first half to knot the game at 19. Mahurin came right back with a jumper to give ISU a 21-19 lead before a Nick Valla triple regained the lead 22-21 for the Flyers. Mahurin scored again on a lay-up with six minutes to go to make it 23-22. After Lewis made it 25-24 with 4:33 remaining before the break, the Sycamores scored the game’s next eight points for a 33-24 lead. Lucas Eitel hit a pair of free throws for a 37-26 halftime lead. ISU held a 46-35 advantage with 15 minutes remaining in the game, but the Sycamores would score 10 unanswered points, capped by a trey from Cummings with 12:27 on the clock for a 56-35 lead. The Sycamores got the Sycamore lead all the way down to 73-64 with 1:35 left on a 7-0 run, but the Syc-amores got a conventional 3-point play from Mahurin with 1:30 re-maining to make it 76-64. Arop scored the final point of the game on a free throw with 43 sec-onds left for the 79-66 victory. Lewis put three players in double figures scoring, led by Julian Lewis who scored 16 points.

742012-13 Indiana State Basketball Notes

Greg Lansing is in his third season as the head basketball coach at Indiana State. He previously spent eight seasons with the program as an assistant coach, including the previous three as associate head coach.

Lansing burst onto the scene as a rookie head coach with the Sycamore basketball program in 2010-11 as he became just the second-ever Indiana State head coach to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. He led the team to a 20-14 record, becoming just the 14th head coach in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to lead a team to 20 or more victories in their first year at the helm. In 2011-12, the Sycamores finished the year with an 18-15 record and advanced to the Col-legeInsiders.com Postseason Tournament. It marked the third consecutive year the team has reached postseason play -- its longest such stretch since the 1977, 1978 and 1979 seasons when Larry Bird donned the Indiana State uniform. Jake Odum was one of just four players nationally to average at least 10 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists per game during his sophomore season and was a Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as well as Second Team All-District selection as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Sycamores downed No. 25 nationally-ranked Vanderbilt on the road and finished third at the Old Spice Classic -- the best-ever finish by a MVC team in the event. ISU reached the NCAA Tournament and took on Syracuse in Cleveland, Ohio based on the program’s third-ever MVC Tournament Championship won at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. ISU raced to the title with victories over No. 6 Evansville, No. 2 Wichita State and No. 1 Missouri State in the Championship Game as the Sycamores entered as the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Freshman Jake Odum was named to the MVC All-Tournament Team. Odum was named a CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Freshman All-American and was named an All-MVC Honorable Mention selection as well as a member of the MVC All-Freshman, All-Newcomer and All-Defense Team. Carl Richard was also named to the All-MVC’s Honorable Mention squad. ISU took two thrilling buzzer beating victories over league foes Missouri State and Creighton during the regular season at Hulman Center. The buzzer beater over Creighton by Richard was voted the No. 2 play of the weekend by ESPN’s SportsCenter. In 2009-10 the Sycamores overcame a ton of adversity to still put together its best season in nearly a decade under the professional leadership of the ISU coaching staff. Despite only having its full compliment of student-athletes for just 28 minutes of the rough and tumble Missouri Valley Conference slate, the Sycamores still recorded its first winning season since 2001 as they finished 17-15. ISU also finished the year with a 9-9 record in league play, bolstering the Sycamores out of the MVC Opening Round at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament by securing the league’s No. 6 seed after finishing in a tie for fifth in the standings. Starting guard Jake Kelly suffered a season ending knee injury with 12 minutes left in the conference opener at Southern Illinois and subsequently also lost Dwayne Lathan and Harry Marshall for extended periods over the course of the year.

Marshall, who was the heart and sole of the team, led the MVC in scor-ing in league contests with a 16.0 ppg average. Marshall was tabbed Second Team All-MVC and was named to the MVC’s All-Defensive Team after turning in shutdown performances against most of the league’s all-conference opposition. Running a well-rounded program, the Syca-mores also two representatives on the MVC’s Scholar Athlete Team as both Jordan Printy and Aaron Carter took those plaudits. The payoff for the Sycamores continued as ISU reached postseason play for the first since 2001 when they accepted a bid to the 2010 College Basketball Invitational, appearing in a road contest at Saint Louis. With a keen attention to details that most coaches think of as an afterthough, the Sycamores concentrated on extreme efficiency on the court, finishing the year as the nation’s second leading free throw shooting team. ISU’s 76.9 percent mark at the line finished just behind NCAA qualifier BYU on the NCAA Division I list for the best free throw shooting teams in the country. Additionally, the Sycamores overcame a 24-point deficit in the second half at Missouri State before falling in overtime. The 24-point comeback in front of a national television audience was the largest in the history of the MVC by a team that at least forced overtime. During his second stint with the Sycamore basketball program, Lansing has been a key recruiting for many talented student-athletes. Lansing has also been a major part of the several all-conference accolades for several players, including Harry Marshall and Jay Tunnell, who took All-MVC honors following the 2008-09 campaign. Last season, the Sycamores concluded the regular season by winning six of their final games, including a trio of road contests. Lansing returned to Indiana State after a seven year stint with the Iowa Hawkeyes. During Lansing’s seven years as assistant coach at Iowa, the Hawkeye’s went 135-92, received three NCAA Tournament invitations, three NIT appearances and won a pair of Big Ten tournament titles, the first of which came on four wins in four games mak-ing Iowa the first team in the Big Ten to accomplish such a feat. In 2005-06, Iowa earned a 25-9 record, the second-most wins in school history, the first undefeated (17-0) home record in the school’s history and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa earned seven All-Big Ten selections, 17 Academic All-Big Ten selec-tions and four Academic All-Americans. Lansing coached four of the last five Big Ten rebounding champions, three straight conference leaders in blocked shots and, the league’s 2005-06 defensive player of the year. Three of his student-athletes reached the NBA and two from the 2005-06 team were invited to NBA camps. In Lansing’s final two seasons of his first stint at Indiana State, the Sycamores posted

back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time since 1979 and 1980. When the Sycamores posted a 16-11 record in 1998 it marked the first winning season for Indiana State since 1980. Indiana State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2000 and 2001. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana State, Lansing was the head basketball coach at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Roosevelt had not had a winning season in 12 years before Lan-sing’s initial season. The Roughriders went on to have back-to-back winning seasons under Greg’s direction. Lansing earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Dakota in 1990 and a master’s degree in counseling from USD in 1992. As a member of the Coyote basketball team Lansing helped South Dakota reach the NCAA Division II Tournament during his junior and senior seasons, the first NCAA invitation for USD since 1954. He was twice named the South Dakota Defensive Player of the Year. Greg is currently ranked among the leaders in career assists at USD. Following his playing career, Lansing served as a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota for two seasons. In 1992-93 he was a full-time assistant. Greg’s father, Dave Lansing, coached high school basketball for 33 years in Iowa. Dave Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame during the 1999 Iowa boys state basketball tournament. Lansing’s dad, his mother, Diane, his sister, Angela, and his nephew, Jordan, live in West Des Moines. His brother, Steve, is the head basketball coach at Faribault High School (Minn.), where he was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2004. Lansing is married to the former Angie Menser, who is an Indiana State graduate and a former track and cross country academic All-American for the Sycamores. She cur-rently serves as ISU’s senior women’s administrator and athletics business manager.
