Our journey began in the northwest tip

o Indiana, where shoreline, wildlie and

history converge. More than 16,000 yearsago, the Wisconsin Glacier let its mark

on the region when it melted, creating

    sweeping moraines, dense wetlands, sandy

prairies and immense sand dunes. Here we

explored the Beyond the Beach Discovery

Trail, which showcases the areas hidden

    treasures beyond the beautiul beachront

on Lake Michigan. Everyone chose a

location along the trail to visit.

We started with my wie Julies pick

    Taltree Arboretum and Gardensin the

trails Moraine Region. Spanning 360acres atop the Valparaiso moraine, Taltree

    comprises wetlands, woodlands, prairies

and ormal gardens. Alyssa, Shawn and I

ollowed as Julie excitedly traipsed through

the gardens examining the designs and the

plant species. When we walked through the

prairie, the kids played hide-and-go-seek in

the tall grasses, reminding me that they are

not as grown-up as they pretend to be!

Shawn selected Pinhook Bog, much to

his squeamish sisters dismay. On a guided

tour along the foating boardwalk that

crosses the bog, we saw insect-eating plantsand sphagnum moss covering the area. The

guide said that Pinhook, Indianas only true

bog, was ormed by a chunk o glacial ice

that melted here, which Shawn thought was

    pretty cool.

Then Alyssa led us o the nature trail

when she asked us to stop at Memorial Opera

House in Valparaiso, and Shawn was the

one rolling his eyes. Yet the 1893 building

IT IS NOT EASY TO CONVINCE MY

    CHILDREN, ALYSSA (14) AND SHAWN

(10), THAT IM A COOL DAD. BUT I THINK

I MIGHT HAVE FINALLY DONE IT ON

    OUR WEEKLONG SUMMER VACATION

    TO EXPERIENCE THE NATURAL HAVENS

    AND FUN ATTRACTIONS OF NORTHERN

INDIANA. AT FIRST, MY WIFE JULIE AND

    I HEARD THE TYPICAL COMPLAINTS

FROM THE KIDS, BUT BY THE END, I

    THINK WE CONVINCED THEM THAT

FAMILY TIME IS NOT ALWAYS BORING.

Theres nothing like a beach getaway, and its possible

in Indiana along the shores of Lake Michigan.

that has hosted John Philip Sousa and the Marx

Brothers was a gorgeous piece o history that was well

worth the visit and the tour.

That night we drove to Indiana Dunes National

Lakeshore in the trails Dunes Region to camp or

the night. In the morning, we climbed and played

on Mount Baldy, the areas largest living dune that

moves about our eet each year, burying trees in itspath. As we stood at the top and gazed out at the view,

we could hardly believe that the dune was moving.

Finally, we headed to what I most wanted to

seethe historical sites! The Bailly Homestead was

built by northwest Indianas frst non-native resident

in 1822 as a ur trading post. We explored the house

and hiked to the nearby Bailly Cemetery beore touring

Chellberg Farm, built in 1869. Stepping back in time

and imagining lie as it was lived many years ago

    ascinates me.

The trail could have kept us entertained or

several days, but there was much more to see in

Northern Indiana. So we drove east to the South

Bend Chocolate Company, where delicious gourmet

treats have been made since 1991. On the Inside

Scoop tour we learned about and watched chocolate

production, sampled yummy treats, made our own

chocolate spoons and saw the array o rare and

antique chocolate utensils in their Chocolate Museum.

My two chocolate-loving women were in heaven, and

we let with Cherry Blossoms, Mint Meltaways and

Caramel Milks. My wie claims that South BendsDouble Dipped Peanuts with their thick, rich chocolate

coating are to die orwe got a pound o those!

Waves were splashing and laughter was abundant

at East Race Waterway in downtown South Bend.

Yes! exclaimed Shawn when he got a glimpse o

the 2,000-oot-long whitewater course. We bravely

stepped into our rented rat and paddled down the

route created on the St. Joseph River. We laughed and

screamed as the water tossed us to and ro, then took

us over an exhilarating 12-oot drop! I must say we

completed the course like pros and high-fved each

other as we stepped back onto dry land.

For our fnal ew days, we made our way to the

northeast corner o Indiana and stopped at Pokagon

State Park in Angola. Beautiul lakes surround the

park, beckoning visitors to enjoy waterront un; we

complied, heading straight or Lake James. Enjoying

shoreline access rom inside the park, we rented a

pontoon and spent the entire day boating, swimming

and fshing on Indianas third-largest lake. Fishing, a

avorite pastime o the men in our amily, was great.

We caught plenty o bass, bluegill and perch that day.

Shawn caught an enormous northern pike, too! Julie

and Alyssa fshed a little but spent most o the day

lying on the boat soaking up some sun.

We spent a cozy night in the parks Potawatomi

Inn. Our courtyard room was rustic and comortable

and oered a spectacular view o the lake. The Inn

provides two dining options: The historic Dining Room

and The Courtyard Ca. The Dining Room oered

quaint home-cooked meals and a scrumptious buetor lunch and dinner. The Courtyard Ca was nice

and convenient when we wanted to grab a quick meal

beore heading out to explore the park.

The next day, Alyssa was dying to go horseback

riding so we headed to the Saddle Barn. An escorted

tour around the park atop the majestic animals was

a great experience, although Im araid that Alyssa

will be begging me to buy her a horse now. Then, we

played on the lake renting canoes and paddleboats

to revel in the lakes scenery. We explored the parks

hiking trails and Nature Center and relaxed on

    Potawatomi Inns large lakeront porch.

Spending the week playing and laughing with my

beautiul wie and wonderul kids was something I will

remember or a very long time. Watching them try new

experiences, exploring nature together and hanging

out every night talking about the days events was a

blast. My kids rarely admit that they have un with

their amily, so when they excitedly asked me where

we would go on our next amily vacation, I knew that

our adventure through Northern Indiana had convinced

them I was a pretty cool dad.

    Relaxing is always

    on the menu at

    Joseph Decuis, with

Swedish massagesat the Inn and locall

    grown oods at the

    restaurant. Roanoke

    oers a metropolitan

    eel in a small-town

    setting.

eading out Friday we drove to Roanoke, located

southwest o Fort Wayne. Our destination was Joseph

    Decuis, a AAA Four Diamond award-winning, arm-to-ork

restaurant known or its top-notch cuisine. We elt lucky to

have escaped a Friday aternoon at the oce.

We made it to Roanoke and decided to explore the

unique shops in downtown beore dinner. Jens inner art

collector came out as soon as we walked through the doors o

a specialty art gallery, and she insisted on buying a abulous

painting that would barely t in the car!

We slowly wandered to the Inn at Joseph Decuis, a bed

and breakast with an upscale atmosphere, to check in. The

    antique urnishings, turn-o-the-century architecture and

on-site Swedish massages, which we booked, made relaxing a

    simple task.

Though eeling lazy, we made a point to be on time

or our reservation back at Joseph Decuis. A place this

gourmet is or grown-ups, making kids ast-ood restaurants

seem like a distant memory. The seasonal menu ensures

that youre always eating resh, locally grown oods rom

their nearby arm and others. We simply had to start theevening with their signature Wagyu Bee Carpaccio, and

Alicia swore she could taste the arm-raised reshness o

the Wagyu. A couple o entrees and wine pairings later, our

mouths were still watering or dessert! Sarah and I ordered

the decadent Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Cake, while Jen

and Alicia devoured the pistachio gelato. Laughter and good

    conversation were in hearty supply.

The great ood didnt stop coming either. At noon the

next day we attended a multi-course Vineyard Lunch at

Joseph Decuis. One Saturday each month the restaurant

eatures ood and wine rom another country to let visitors

experience the favors o global cuisine. We were excitedthat Australia was being highlighted because none o us

were amiliar with the gourmet favors o the Outback.

The menu certainly transported us to another place as we

savored Coconut-Curry Mussel Soup, Baby Octopus Tempura

and Joseph Decuis Wagyu Bee Cheek and Lamb Tongue

Tortellini. We werent sure what to expect rom these exotic

selections, but we ound them all incredibly delicious and

it was so un to try several new dishes! A rereshing Mango

Cheesecake was the perect nale to the meal. We all agreed:

were now ans o Australian ood.

Waving goodbye to Roanoke we headed southwest to

Wabash. First stop, Charley Creek Gardens. We wandered

the beautiul gardens and lost ourselves in the labyrinth.

Then, ater we checked in at Charley Creek Inn, we spent

the rest o the aternoon exploring each little nook o the

magnicently restored 1920 building. At the Ice Cream

Parlor and Candy Shoppe we purchased specialty popcorn

homegrown in Indiana. We loaded up on bags to take home

to the kids along with some Caramel Sweet Popcorn Glaze or

ourselvesyum! We couldnt resist grabbing a selection o

South Bend Chocolates either. And o course, Jen made sure

we stopped at the Inns Hoosier Salon where we oohed and

aahed over the antastic art exhibition.

    For More Information

We treated ourselves to a second gourmet dinner at

Twenty, a 1920s-style restaurant inside the Charley Creek

Inn. While easy on the wallet, Twentys dishes impressed

our eyes and our taste buds. The Lobster Stued Grouper

was the ultimate creamy seaood delight, while the Chicken

Puttanesca with its parmesan-panko crust, resh mozzarella

and roasted tomatoes let us craving a second helping.

Ater dinner came the moment Sarah, our resident

music acionado, had been waiting ora concert. So we

reshened up and walked down to the Honeywell Center,

a 1,500-seat theater dedicated to bringing arts education

and entertainment to Wabash. Choosing a weekend or our

trip was a dicult decision because the Honeywell Centers

season eatured so many amazing shows. A perormance by

The Manchester Symphony Orchestra, Fiddler on the Roo

and Dance Kaleidoscope: The Elvis Project were all on the

roster. We ended up choosing to hear the smooth vocal

skills o The Osmond Brothers, musical legends who have

been perorming or 50 years. What a great choice! Their

lively mix o jazz, rock, pop, country and barbershop music

had us tapping our toes and singing along in the magnicentFord Theater. There was denitely not a bad seat in the

house, and the acoustics made it sound like they were right

next to us! We giggled like girls and enjoyed cutting loose

as the amazing concert lited our spirits and re-energized

    our minds.

We may not be quite as young as we used to be, but

snuggling into bed sleepover-style at the Charley Creek

Inn took us back to days gone by. The bold colors, elegant

decorations and cozy urniture made or a homey, relaxing

stay. Getting out o the house and letting other people clean

up ater us never elt so good!

There was still one thing missing rom the tripadelicious glass o Indiana-made wine! We slept in Sunday

morning, then made the short trip to Oak Hill Winery in

Converse located south o Wabash. We visited their carriage

house or a ree tasting o sweet and dry wines made rom

a variety o ruits. Oak Hill uses old-ashioned methods to

make natural, delicious wines. We sipped the tasty wines,

bantered over which was the best and just enjoyed being

together. Sometimes the simplest moments in lie are

    the sweetest.

Oak Hills nouveau Van Buren wine made rom Indiana-

grown Chambourcin grapes was my personal avorite, though

their sweet Indiana Apple wine was near perection. I loved

their creations so much that I joined their Wine Club, paying

a fat, upront price to get two bottles o their unique wines

every month or one year. I gured these bottles o wine

would make great birthday, anniversary and holiday gits or

riends and relatives throughout the year.

We each let with a couple bottles o our avorite wines,

which stued the car to its capacity with all the weekend

goodies! Heading home, Sarah said she elt like we had

experienced the ultimate combination o gourmet oods,

    sophisticated accommodations, classic entertainment and

simple pleasures. I couldnt agree with her more.

So when the day came, we ound ourselves in Indianapolis a couple o hours rom home, but it elt like we were

much arther away. The tall buildings, upscale restaurants and exciting attractions promised to make this our best

anniversary yet. Although I planned the trip with her in mind, I quickly ound mysel having a great time.

Upon arrival Cindy and I headed straight or the up and coming Fountain Square Cultural District on the southeast

side o Indianapolis eaturing ethnic restaurants, art galleries, antique shops and eclectic nightlie. This neighborhood

has been a buzzing commercial and cultural center since the early 1900s and we could sense the history around us as we

wandered the streets and saw the beautiul, central ountain that gives the area its name.

The atmosphere on the square was lively as we popped in and out o art galleries searching or just the right piece

to take home. At the Murphy Art Center, artists painted, sculpted and drew masterpieces right beore our eyes! I dont

even draw a good stick fgure, so I was impressed by each stroke o a pencil or brush. Cindy took me to the Indianapolis

Museum o Contemporary Art a ew blocks away, and I must say that their exhibit taught me a new appreciation or the

thoughtul beauty o modern artistic styles.

My wie and I have lived in rural Indiana or most o our lives andwere very happy here. But when our 20th anniversary came around,

I knew we had to celebrate in style. Im a country boy, but my wie

loves art, music and history, so I decided to take her to the big city

or a taste o culture she wouldnt soon orget. By Glenn Fuller

ou should have seen how big Cindys eyes got when we

walked into the Indianapolis Downtown Antique Mall and

learned it housed 40 antique shops! She was glowing as she

rummaged through pottery, glassware and urniture, nally

convincing me to buy her a charming mahogany bookshel

rom the turn o the century.

When Cindy nished her shopping excursion, we went

out on the town in Fountain Square. A delicious and exotic

dinner o Luxor Restaurants Mediterranean cuisine was

ollowed by a swing dance lesson at the Fountain Square

Theatre. In spite o my two let eet, we jumped and jived to

the tunes o The Stardusters, an Indianapolis music group

with a unique, Big Band sound. Between the dinner, music

and dancing, we elt like we were dating again!

The next day took us to the center o downtown

IndianapolisWhite River State Park. We didnt expect to

nd a gorgeous, natural haven in the middle o a city, but

White River State Park is just that. We toured the park

on Segways, walked along the beautiul canal and

admired the magnicent pieces o public art. YellowButterfy, with its simple but perect design, was

our avorite piece. Getting to the park was a

breeze, too. Parking garages are in abundance

downtown, and we ound none o the trac

youd expect in a big city.

We didnt have to get back in the car to

nd more to do. Downtown Indianapolis sure

was designed with pedestrians in mind with so

many attractions and restaurants within walking

distance o each other. White River State Park itsel

houses three great museums, a ballpark, a zoo, an

IMAX Theater and more. The Indiana State Museum wasour avorite part. The buildings incredible, Indiana limestone

architecture is just the beginning! We explored three permanent

exhibition foors o Indiana history, seeing amazing artiacts that

told the cultural, scientic and historical stories o our state

everything rom moon rocks to butter churns. I teased Cindy, saying she

probably remembered the days o butter churns, until she smiled and

gently reminded me that Im a year older than she is!

The state museum also has halls reserved or bringing in a variety o

exhibits rom around the world. We caught the Frugal and Fancy exhibit,

showcasing American quilts that refected both ormal European needlework

traditions and inormal Scots-Irish scrap quilt styles. These designs merged

as immigrants rom various countries came into contact with each other in

the New World. The range o quilt styles in the exhibit illustrated the

    intricacy and diversity o America.

Our quest or abulous art took us out o downtown and up to the

Indianapolis Museum o Art, which recently added an art park to its

already antastic collection. Built on 100 acres that includes orests

and a lake, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park is

one o a kind. We strolled along the woodland trails,

admiring the eight incredible pieces o modern art

commissioned or the space. Bench Around

the Lake made us giggle like children as we

attempted to sit on the curvy, winding, yellow

benches ound throughout the park. We

stood in quiet contemplation ater walking

through the tunnel that leads to Park o the

Laments, smiled at the whimsical Funky

Bones sculpture and gazed out across the

beautiul lake rom atop Stratum Pier.

Our love o history took us back

to the 1800s Indiana at Conner Prairie

Interactive History Park in Fishers, just north

o Indianapolis. There reenactors taught us

to throw tomahawks at the Native American

camp and to master the blacksmiths orge in

Prairietown, a pioneer settlement. We even toured

the William Conner Homestead, the rst brick home

built in Indiana, and learned about the man, himsel:

    Our avorite

    1859 Balloon Voyage! Looking

out across the horizon rom the

    tethered, helium-lled balloon was a

    special experience.

We decided to make the last night o our little

getaway special with a concert at The Palladium in

Carmel. This 1,600-seat hall brings in some o the

worlds best musical and dancing talent. Opened in

January 2011, The Palladium boasts breathtaking

architecture and world-class acoustics. The buildings

stately European style was inspired by Venetianarchitect Andrea Palladios design o a 1500s Italian villa

    called La Rotonda.

Dressed in our nest, we excitedly headed in to hear

a concert by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra,

one o the worlds premier orchestras. The Philharmonic

has entertained in some o the most amous venues

across the globe, including Carnegie Hall.

The show eatured musical selections by

Rachmanino and Rimsky-Korsakov, and we were

incredibly impressed. The instruments blended perectly,

creating soul-stirring melodies and harmonies as Cindy

and I held hands and listened intently. I think I even saw

tears in her eyes as the sweet, sad strains o the violin

carried across the hall. We knew we couldnt have had a

more magical evening i we had been in New York City.

On the drive home, I thought happily about our

There is something magical about taking family vacations with young

children. As we load up the van, the kids are always peppering us with

questions about where we are going and what we will see. My husband Jefand I, with boys in tow, hit the road to make some great family memories.

Our boys, Ryan (8) and Joshua (10), are extremely active and hate being

cooped upsomething they learned from their parentsso we knew that a

great outdoors adventure would be a perfect trip. We traveled to Western

Indiana to explore the natural beauty of the rural landscape.

The adventure began in Battle Ground at

Tippecanoe Battleeld Park where the WabashHeritage Trail begins. We admired the Battle

of Tippecanoe Monument, a National Historic

    Landmark, before starting to hike

    the trail that follows Burnetts

    Creek and the Wabash River.

The path runs 13 miles to the

    south side of West Lafayette

    and ends at Fort Ouiatenon.

As we walked, Je told the

    kids about the battle between

William Henry Harrison and the Native American

Confederation that took place in the area. Hedescribed how tribes of natives banded together

under Tecumseh to ght against the settlers in

    hopes of regaining their land.

Ryan and Joshua were all ears and

even found some sticks to pretend

    they were ghting on opposite

sides of the famous battle. Near

the head of the trail, we took the

short loop out to Prophets Rock

    where the Prophet, Tecumsehs

brother, gave the order to attack Harrisons regiment just

before daybreak on November 7, 1811.

We took our time, enjoying the beautiful scenery of

marshes, water, wildowers, birds and forests. We even

convinced the boys to be quiet and stealthy enough so

we could see local wildlife: squirrels, rabbits and graceful

deer. As we passed Heron Island, a preserve on the

Wabash River, the boys tried to see how many herons

    were perched in the rookery.

When we reached our rest stop, we settled in at apicnic table for the lunch Je had been carrying. After

refueling, Joshua and Ryan were ready to see more

wildlife and hear more adventure stories on the ve-

    and-a-half-mile trek back.

That evening we rented a campsite at Prophetstown

State Park and spent the night under the stars. Ryan,

Jes little helper, set up camp and pitched the tent

with Je while Joshua and I unpacked the van and dinner.

Hot dogs just taste better when cooked over a

campre. Je started a couple of campre songs and we

all sang along before it was time for smores. At the end

of the night, the boys were thrilled to gaze at the stars

before drifting o to sleep in their tent.

Hiking through the prairie grass on Prophetstowns

trails the next day was a blast. We counted to see how

many of the parks 92 wildower species we could spot.

Were pretty sure we found 17, although Joshua insisted

    that he found all 92!

Historic Prophetstown, located on the park

grounds, is a working farm with livestock and horse-drawn machinery. We showed up at 3 pm for one of

their two daily chore times so the boys could experience

farm life. Je helped the boys feed the enormous

Belgian horses. Joshua took his job of collecting

chicken eggs very seriously, and Ryan got to milk a cow.

Once the chores were nished, we walked over to the

Woodland Indian Settlement nearby to see where the

Native American village established by Tecumseh and

the Prophet once stood. It was near this town, where the

park now lies, that the Prophet staged an early morning

After our fun day of covered bridge exploration, we

decided we needed to return in October for the famous

Covered Bridge Festival that celebrates these unique

Native Americans withdrew to Prophetstown, Harrison

burned the village to the ground and led his troops

    to victory.

At the Woodland Indian settlement, we walked

through replicas of the towns Council House, Medicine

Lodge, Chief s Cabin and Granary, we imagined

what life was like for the tribes who once lived andworked here.

After another evening under the stars, we cleaned up

camp and drove southwest for an adventure on the Parke

County Covered Bridge Trails. With 31 covered bridges,

some more than 100 years old, Parke County considers

itself The Covered Bridge Capital of the World. The

fresh air was calling, so we stopped at the Parke County

Tourist Information Center to get directions to the four

bicycle routes around the bridges. We chose the path on

the south side of Parke County and drove to the small

town of Bridgeton where we unloaded our bikes from

the car and pedaled o on part of the 30-mile route.

The biking trail winds through six covered bridges,

each with its own unique design and personality.

From Bridgeton we biked the few miles to the Thorpe

Ford Covered Bridge. When we arrived, we hopped

o our bikes, walking through and around the huge

structure and picturing horse-drawn wagons slowing

down to cross the bridge. We learned that the reason

these bridges are covered was to protect their support

structure from the weather. Biking back to town, weenjoyed the indescribable natural beauty surrounding

us. Ryan kept pointing out birds, trees and views he

    found particularly appealing.

Back in Bridgeton, the route took us to the

Bridgeton Covered Bridge, the Bridgeton Grist Mill

and the Bridgeton Country Store, where we stopped for

some refreshing root beers. We browsed through their

antiques, candles, art and foods before choosing some

locally made fudge to take back with us. Then we

Amazing artisan wineries lled with rereshingvarieties and charming vineyards that produce nativegrapes can be ound throughout South CentralIndiana. No need to visit Napa Valley or Bordeaux,France, to taste world-class winesinstead, westayed closer to home and made our way along theIndiana Uplands Wine Trail. The Indiana Uplands are

a region o Indiana signied by rolling hills and uniquesediment and geology where a plateau once roseabove the areas glaciers. The Uplands span rom justnorth o Bloomington down to the Ohio River betweenJasper and Henryville. Its here in the Uplands thatthe trails nine wineries oer unique favors andinspiring encounters with art and nature. When we setout on our rst Saturday excursion, we ound that thedrive alone to one o the wineries in this region is aspectacular treat.

Our trip to Butler Winery, just northeast oBloomington, was a delight. Butlers approach is to putthe favors o Indiana into all their wines, which is whythey use only Indiana grapes. We strolled through theserene vineyard, which was amazingly lush and green, admiring the areas distinct beauty.

At our complimentary tasting we sampled severalwines including their 2008 Chambourcin Ros,designated Rose Wine o the Year and Indiana-grownFrench-American Wine o the Year at the 2009 IndyInternational Wine Competition. The local favorwas delicious!

Picking out a bottle o the Chambourcin Ros anda cheese tray to complement our packed picnic lunch,

we enjoyed eating in the beauty o the vineyard. Then we toured the wine cellar and production area, learning about how Butler ensures that their wines areo the highest quality.

Discovering local music is a passion o ours, so wedrove to nearby Oliver Winery or one o their Tunes onthe Terrace events. For $20 each, we sat on the lower

patio and listened to a local pianist play un, rock nroll-inspired tunes. We savored a wine tasting andeach ordered a glass o our avorite variety, which wasincluded in the ticket price. Chad chose their semi-dry Creekbend Traminette while I preerred the semi-sweet Harvest Flavors Mango with its exotic favor. For dinner we purchased hearty pulled pork barbecueand cornbread salad provided by Bloomingtons ownSmokin Jacks Rib Shack. Relaxing on the patiolistening to live music, sipping our avorite Indiana-made wines and chatting with riends made this themost peaceul and perect evening I had experiencedin a while. It was great to orget about the busyness oeveryday lie and enjoy the moment.

A wine steward at Oliver told us that the UplandsTrail wineries hold special events throughout the year. One such event is their March Gladness progressivedinner. It eatures a wine-paired course at each o thetrails nine wineries along with tastings and behind-the-scenes tours or $30 per person. Our mouths startedwatering just thinking about it! Jill and I will denitelycheck the wine trail calendar or uture great eventslike this as we make plans to visit the other sevenwineries on the trail.

The owners o Butler Winery, one stop along the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail, treat you to a pleasant stroll through the vineyards as well as

    tastes o their delicious wines.

On another getaway with Evan and Jill, we

decided to make it a weekend getaway on Southeast

Indianas Indiana Wine Trail. This trail oers six

wonderully unique wineries nestled in a portion

o Indianas Ohio River Valley Region. The area

is known as the birthplace o the American wine

industry, as the rst successul American winery

was established during the early 1800s. Today,

many o the wines rom this area are national and

    international award-winning wines.

Our getaway began in Madison at the Madison

Vineyards Estate Winery where we booked their Wine

Lovers Trail Package oering a two-night stay in the

winerys comortable bed and breakast. The package

also included a tasting o international wines with

complimentary appetizers in the private cellar, a

winery tour and tasting with the winemaker and a

delicious hot breakast. We had a great time sipping,

munching, relaxing and asking the winemakerquestions. Evan made it his personal mission to try

to stump the winemaker with his questions; o

    course, he did not succeed!

At Lanthier Winery, also in Madison, we enjoyed

an amazing cultural experience beyond the wonderul

wines. The 18th century stone building is a true

piece o history, where early settlers lived and traded.

On a beautiul May aternoon we sipped Rivertown

Red in The Lot Gallery while admiring the Annual

Spring Artist Showcase that displayed landscape,

foral and black and white masterpieces by a brilliant

Indiana photographer. Bursts o color, warm sunshine

and riendly butterfies greeted us as we strolled

through the French country gardens. The Rivertown

Reds intriguing hints o oak were enhanced by the

    beautiul scenery around us.

Stream Cli Farm Winery in Commiskey,

just northwest o Madison, names its wines ater

horses because the winery is housed in the historic

arms blacksmith shop. Choices like Bareback,

Spotted Horse and Thunder Hoo delighted our

taste buds. While sampling their unique varieties, a

sta member told us the ascinating history o the

100-year-old amily arm that was raided during the

Civil War. We ordered a charming lunch rom theseasonal menu at their Twigs and Sprigs Tearoom,

and Jill raved over the incredible herbs that come

    straight rom their garden!

Chad and I have loved exploring these two wine

trails with two o our avorite people. Its not just

the magnicent Indiana wines that we enjoyits

the history, art, culture and ascinating people we

ound along the way that make the experiences truly

special. Weve made a great start and now plan to

A Welcoming History for a Most PleasantPresentFrench Lick Resort

I was so relaxed I could barely get the words

thank you out o my throat and across my lips.

But thats denitely what I wanted to say to the

aesthetician who had just given me the most complete,

rejuvenating andyesrelaxing acial I have ever

received anywhere. A weekend away with Sue and Paul

was denitely in order, and the French Lick Resort, tucked away in the rolling hills o Southern Indiana,

    was the perect destination.

My best gal pal and I were pampering ourselves

in the Spa at French Lick while our husbands did their

own thing on one o the resort gol courses. But more

about gol later. First, I need to tell you that beore

the absolutely amazing acial, I did what you just have

to do when youre at French Licktake a bath in the

amous Pluto mineral spring waters. People have come

rom ar and wide or over two centuries to bathe in the

Pluto water, so why wouldnt I? The healing mineral

waters really did alleviate some o the stress I hadwhen I entered the claw-oot tub, and my skin elt as

nourished as they said it would.

    French Lick Hotel is truly

    breathtaking. With close to 700

rooms, its massive size is outshone

    by the magnicent architecture,

    Italian mosaic foors and gorgeous

grounds. While we explored we were

sure to stop at the amed gazebo

    that houses the Pluto mineral

    spring. We imagined turn-o-the-

    century travelers indulging in the

healing waters. We also shopped the many shops

    and boutiques inside the hotel.

    While we were puttering around

the hotel, Paul and my husband,

Frank, spent the day at the resorts

    Sports & Exhibits Complex. They

    practiced putting on the indoor

green, worked on their swings at

the driving range and got a ew

    pointers rom the resident gol

experts. They had trouble coming up with words to

describe the 18-hole Pete Dye Course they played

one o three courses on the property. Frank talked

about the rolling hills, narrow airways and panoramic

views that made it so unique. Now he and Paul are

ready to take on the other six courses designed by

that masterul course architect, Pete Dye, along the

    Indiana Pete Dye Gol Trail.

This resort is hopping 24 hours a day with an on-site casino. Even though its a new addition, they did a

great job matching the Neoclassical style o the resorts

historic lobby. Sue and I sat at the slot machines while

the guys took a shot at the electronic Texas Hold Em

    poker tables.

The sister hotel to French Lick at the resort is

West Baden Springs Hotel. We visited this truly unique

hotel when we took a historic tour. Your jaw drops as

your gaze goes straight up and you just cannot help

spinning around when you enter the domed atrium.

Its amazing! And no surprise someone dubbed this

century-old National Historical Landmark the Eighth

Wonder o the World. Six foors o rooms ring theatrium, all with a panoramic view. Ater exploring the

interior o West Baden, we decided to take a tour o the

rolling hills around the hotel on horseback!

We discovered something else while at the French

Lick Resort: being totally relaxed really increases your

appetite! And with 15 dining options on-site, we were

certainly able to curb our appetites! The porterhouse

steaks at 1875: The Steakhouse were so tender, but I

have to say the bananas oster that Sue and I shared

was my avorite course. At Sinclairs Restaurant at

West Baden we made reservations or the ches table

with a view o the kitchen. Again, I must mention

dessert. The West Baden Signature Chocolate Dome

The scenery is gorgeous both inside and out at French Lick Resort, from thedomed atrium of West Baden Springs Hotel (top left), to the rolling hills of theon-site golf courses and the Italian mosaic oors at French Lick Hotel.

About a year ago our daughter was

visiting for the weekend, and you know

what she said? Mom, you and Dad

need to travel more. Well, thats all it

took. Weve been traveling as often as

we can, and these two trips in SouthernIndiana are a couple of our favorites.

above Horseshoe Bend, the tightest bend on the Ohio

River. While it was rst settled in the late 1800s on

lower ground, the entire town moved to the top othe blu in 1930 ater it was lost to a food. We stayed

in The Leavenworth Inn, a charming collection o 16

rooms in our separate guesthouses. Ours was the

Secretariat Suite in the Carriage House, complete

with private deck and picture-window view o the

surrounding hills. We rented bikes to explore the hills,

played tennis and rewarded ourselves with warm, resh-

    baked cookies.

I was glad we didnt eat too many cookies, because

I would not have wanted to spoil my appetite beore

dining at the Overlook Restaurant. As its name implies,

this popular restaurant overlooks the river, providing

a 20-mile panoramic view! It was un to watch the

barges on the river beore the sun went down in a most

dazzling way. Ater a delicious meal

o their amous country cookin, we checked out the

30 varieties o beer they eature in the downstairs

Lately, Frank has also become quite a wine

connoisseur, so we headed to Hubers Orchard,

Winery & Vineyards in Starlight on our way north

toward home. The Hubers continue their German

ancestors traditions as they run the amily winery,

which opened in 1843, growing 18 varieties o grapes.

The tour included a behind-the-scenes look at thewine production and tastes o their many wines like

Blueberry Port, Cabernet Franc and Traminette.

At the winerys Starlight Ca, we enjoyed a light

lunch and live music on the patio overlooking the

550-acre arm. We took home a little bit o everything

rom their bakery, cheese shop and arm market so

we could enjoy locally grown ruits and vegetables

and excellent cheeses when we uncorked our next

    bottle o Huber wine.

As we headed home, we decided we agreed with

the early settlers o New HarmonyIndiana oers a

    little utopia or everyone.

    ttingly namedwas a crazy-good concoction

o chocolate mousse and cake in a ganache shell.

Truly, everything about this trip was sweet.

A Little Dose Of UtopiaDid I mention I enjoy relaxing when I take a

getaway? Thats just what Frank and I did in New

Harmony, and we learned a little, too. This quaint

little towns utopian legacy began about 200 years

ago when the Harmonie Society settled on the Wabash

River. The society practiced communal living to inspire

renewal and ellowship. Later on, the area became

a haven or more secular educational and cultural

pursuits. We learned about these two groups when

we took a guided tour that started in the ultra-modern

Atheneum/Visitors Center, designed by the world-

    amous architect Richard Meier.

Frank and I had never meandered through a

labyrinth beore. I convinced him to give it a try, and

we started with the Cathedral Labyrinth, a replica

o one at Chartres Cathedral in France. We quietly

ollowed the winding path to the center and back

out again, and I must admit that as I ocused on

the wandering my stress melted away. The walk was

so rejuvenating that we then visited the Harmonist

Labyrinth, a living path o hedges.

No trip to New Harmony is complete without

dinner at the award-winning Red Geranium. We atein the Tillich Room, the most romantic and ornate o

three dining rooms. A lakeview table was the perect

setting or a delicious meal o sea scallops and

char-grilled rack o lamb. This meal set the stage or

a night at the New Harmony Theatre, a proessional

venue open during the summer. The lakeview theme

continued as our stunning room at the New Harmony

Inn looked out over the water.

We continued our little quest to learn the

interesting history o Southern Indiana about 90

minutes east in the tiny town o Leavenworth.

About 300 people live in Leavenworth, situated high

You cant help relaxing at The Leavenworth Inn, perched above the picturesque Ohio River. The West Baden Garden oers picture-perfectsettings of its own. Opposite: French Lick is the southernmost stop on the seven-course Pete Dye Golf Trail.
