Strange are the ways of life - beyond any compassion.

I choose to venture on a different path, rather beating around bush on 'pending welfare issues' for retirees. Enough has been said. Let me leave it at that.

Aging is inevitable so is certainty of death. Each one of us has got to pass through this life's rigmarole. A change in scenario of life is a natural phenomenon resulting in physique deterioration, mental capacity erosion, over burdened by past glories and present agonies, vis-a-vis deplorable relationship with younger lot.

It is an irony of faith that those toddlers who were helped with their support to stand and learned to walk, to stand on their feet in life, refuse to land a helping hand to the fragile structure, hungry for a sympathetic look and sincere assistance rather than being left to fan for themselves.

Isolation is a great curse at this age and more so where the husband and wife gets separated by cruel stroke of death of one of the two.

The elderly need qualitative care and not quantitative care. Few moments imbibed with respect and loving care will go a long way. The giggles of the grandchildren, their mischievous antidotes and their boastful achievements in their school and play grounds are great tonic to cheer up the elders. However, this is a rare thing to come by. Everyone seems to be too busy.

Old age home appears to be a new mantra for peaceful living. It is imbedded with number of complications. Falling health, dementia, insomnia, and financial distress are the few things in as much as for those in grip of chronic ailments like Cancer, Kidney Failure, Heart Ailments, Brain Hemorrhage and the list goes on and on. Paid assistance therefore in the old age home being looked after is asking for the moon.

Joint family system appears to be a practicable solution however it is a thing of past. Yet this is also mard by the mental make-up of present generation.

What seniors need in fact is a word of favour, a smile of praise, and allowed to bask in their past glory as they deserve the dividend for the love, care and guidance given to their children.

God bless those who matter.

North West Chapter OrganizesCancer Awareness Talk During Monthly Meeting Of June, 2018

Indian Cancer Society was founded in Mumbai in 1951 by the renowned oncologist Dr. DJ Jussawal with the stated objective of providing cancer awareness and education as well as offering high quality / low cost cancer screening facilities.

An awareness talk on cancer was given by Mr. R R Mishra, Mrs. Anitha Jain and Dr. Chanda Khurana, dedicated volunteers of ICS. Apart from their awareness talks they also visit Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Research Institute to provide emotional support to the patients.

Mrs. Anitha Jain and Dr. Chanda Khurana spent time with female retirees for providing awareness about problems, early detection and precautions.

Talk was focused on early detection and prevention of cancer as at present 80% cases have been reported at very advanced stage where saving the life of the patient is a challenge. Cancer is a life style decease and can be prevented if we follow a healthy life style. Four leading factors which increase chances of cancer are Tobacco use, Alcohol, Unhealthy diet, obesity and sedentary life style. A regular early check up is the key to detect the cancer at

early stage so that it could be treated timely. Prevention is always better than cure.

Mr Mishra shared words of Dr Diwan - Head Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Institute - Wine in one hand and Tobacco in the other is worse than CYNYDE as the two give slow death whereas CYNYDE kills instantly.

Indian Cancer Society conducts cancer awareness programmes, door to door tests for cancer, rehabilitation of breast cancer patients and child patients through moral support and financial help.

The importance of awareness programmes can be judged from a common scene where the attendant of a mouth cancer patient uses tobacco even after seeing the horrible consequences experienced by the patient he happens to be attending.

Better know cancer rather than fearing.

Malignancy is abnormal growth of cells. New cells get affected by cancerous cells.

Any abnormal growth in the body should be taken seriously and got examined.

Senior Citizens should take 3 whites lesser: Salt, Sugar and Ghee.

Prevention of cancer by avoiding:

1. Transfat - Using same oil again and again - customer comes and samosa vendor heats oil a number of times.

2. Unsafe sex.

Prostate cancer is more common among senior citizens. It grows slowly but it's location is very complicated. Symptoms of cancer are - extended period of conspation, wound, unusual bleeding and discharge, bleeding or discharge from any part of body. Defficulty in swallowing, change in speech, small or big wart ()

Treatment of cancer involves removal of Tumour by surgery, radiation, sometimes after cutting off. Chemo Therapy as stand alone treatment or after surgery and Targetted Therapy.

Include seasonal vegetables, Sprouts and fibrous fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Check your mouth in the mirror for patches and consult a cancer specialist if you notice any patches.

OsteoporosisOsteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. As a result, bones become weak and may break from a fall or, in serious cases, from sneezing or minor bumps.

Dr. Harpreet Singh

Osteoporosis means “porous bone.” Viewed under a microscope. Healthy bone looks like a honeycomb. When osteoporosis occurs, the holes and spaces in the honeycomb are much larger than in healthy bone. Osteoporotic bones have lost density or mass and contain abnormal tissue structure. As bones become less dense, they weaken and are more likely to break. If you're 50 or older and have broken a bone, ask your doctor or healthcare provider about a bone density test.

Osteoporosis is Serious

Breaking a bone is a serious complication of osteoporosis, especially with older patients. Osteoporotic bone breaks are most likely to occur in the hip, spine or wrist, but other bones can break too. In addition to causing permanent pain, osteoporosis causes some patients to lose height. When osteoporosis affects vertebrae, or the bones of the spine, it often leads to a stooped or hunched posture.

Osteoporosis may limit mobility, which often leads to feelings of isolation or depression. Additionally, twenty percent of seniors who break a hip die within one year from either complications related to the broken bone itself or the surgery to repair it. Many patients require long-term nursing home care.

Osteoporosis is Costly

Osteoporosis is responsible for two million broken bones and $19 billion in related costs every year. By 2025, experts predict that osteoporosis will be responsible for approximately three million fractures and $25.3 billion in costs annually.

When Should Someone Seek Medical Care for Osteoporosis for Females?

If you are past menopause and have constant pain in areas such as the neck or lower back, consult your doctor for further evaluation. If you are at risk for developing osteoporosis (see risk factors above), also consult your doctor for a medical assessment and bone density screening.

Go to the hospital if you feel severe pain in your muscles or bones that limits your ability to function. Go to the hospital's emergency department if you have sustained trauma or suspect fractures of your spine, hip, or wrist.

During presentation focus was on gastrointestinal cancer - Dr Mishra's field of specialisation.

Many tests reveal different dimensions of cancer.

PET SCAN

● Some cancers are hereditary - like colon cancer.

● Cancer is not contagious.

● Getting regular executive check-up is not a good habit. Many tests with positive reports make little difference to normal life.

● One should focus on specific persistent problem rather than going for executive check-ups at short intervals.

The question/answer session gave full opportunity to participants to clear all doubts about the most dreaded disease which has now been tamed with decades of research

The telephone rang. It was a call from his mother. He answered it and his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday."

Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

"Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.

"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.

"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.

Life Is Measured By The Moments Which Take Away Our Breath

"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said.

"He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.

As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered.

Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly...

"What'swrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.

"The box is gone," he said.

"What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said.

It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.

"I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days," the note read.

Early the next day Jack went to the post office and retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention.

"Mr. Harold Belser" it read.

Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope.Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside."Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filled his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these

` I Am MoneyThe whole world is mad after me. But the fools don't know that I carry germs and viruses on my body. For me every human being is a target. Anybody not observing hygiene adds to the huge stock of germs and viruses living happily with me.

When you touch me I pass lot of germs on to your fingers hand and atmosphere.

The moment you see me even when you are having your food you forget where you should focus and are quick to grab me.

Whenever you see me your greed leaps up and you forget all hygienic principles. What a fool you are!

When you touch me and resume eating you don't know that your skin and body take my germs.

Also people are ready to pick me up even from the drain.

The more money one has the more he wants there is no end.

Whether I am a high value currency note of rupees 2000 or a one rupee coin in both forms I spread germs and viruses.

My man when are you going to open your eyes!

When are you going to think about yourself!

When you touch me please don't ever cook, eat or serve food without washing your hands.

Keep me and food poles apart.

15 Shocking Facts About Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is perhaps the single most *underrated nutrient* in the world of nutrition.

That's probably because it's free....

Your body makes it when sunlight touches your skin!!

Drug companies can't sell you sunlight, so there's no

promotion of its health benefits.

The truth is, most people don't know the real story on "vitamin D and health."

So here's an overview taken from an interview between Mike Adams and *Dr. Michael Holick*.

1. Vitamin D is *produced by your skin* in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation*from natural sunlight*.

2. The healing rays of natural sunlight (that generate vitamin D in your skin) *cannot penetrate glass*.

So you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.

3. It is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from your diet. *Sunlight exposure is the only reliable way* to generate vitamin D in your own body.

4. A person would have to drink *ten tall glasses* of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet.

5. The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. States are far from the equator.

6. People with dark skin pigmentation may need 20 - 30 times as much exposure to sunlight as fair-skinned people to generate the same amount of vitamin D.

That's why prostate cancer is epidemic among black men -- it's a simple, but widespread, sunlight deficiency.

7. Sufficient levels of vitamin D are *crucial for calcium absorption* in your intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium, rendering calcium supplements useless.

8. Chronic vitamin D *deficiency cannot be reversed overnight*: it takes months of vitamin D supplementation and sunlight exposure to rebuild the body's bones and nervous system.

9. Even weak *sunscreens (SPF=8) block* your body's ability to generate vitamin D by 95%. This is how sunscreen products actually cause disease -by creating a critical vitamin deficiency in the body.

10. It is impossible to generate too much vitamin D in your body from sunlight exposure: your body will self-regulate and only generate what it needs.

11. If it hurts to press firmly on your sternum (chest / breast bone), you may be suffering from chronic vitamin D deficiency right now.

12. Vitamin D is "activated" in your body by your *kidneys and liver* before it can be used.

13. Having kidney disease or liver damage can

words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! -- Harold Belser.""The thing he valued most was my time!"Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days.*"Why?" Janet, his assistant asked."I need some time to spend with the people I love and say I care for," he said. "Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!""Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100 percent true.BREATHS WE TAKE AWAY MOMENTS.

greatly impair your body's ability to activate circulating vitamin D.

14. The sunscreen industry doesn't want you to know that your body actually needs sunlight exposure because that realization would mean lower sales of sunscreen products.

15. Even though vitamin D is one of the *most powerful healing chemicals in your body*, your body makes it absolutely free. No prescription required.

~ Other powerful *antioxidants* with this ability include the super fruits like Pomegranates (POM Wonderful juice), Acai, Blueberries, etc.

~ Diseases and conditions cause by vitamin D deficiency:

Osteoporosis is commonly caused by a lack of vitamin D, which greatly impairs calcium absorption.

 Sufficient vitamin D prevents:

prostate cancer,

 breast cancer,

ovarian cancer,

depression,

colon cancer and schizophrenia..

"Rickets" is the name of a bone-wasting disease caused by vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency may *exacerbate* type 2 diabetes and impair insulin production in the pancreas.

Obesity impairs vitamin D utilization in the body, meaning obese people *need twice* as much vitamin D.

Vitamin D is used around the world to treat *Psoriasis*(a chronic skin disease).

Vitamin D deficiency can cause ~schizophrenia.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is caused by a melatonin imbalance initiated by lack of exposure to sunlight.

Chronic vitamin D deficiency is often misdiagnosed as "fibro myalgia" because its symptoms are so similar: *lmuscle weakness, aches and pains.

Your risk of developing serious diseases like diabetes and cancer is *reduced 50% - 80%* through simple, sensible exposure to natural *sunlight 2-3 times each week*.

Infants who receive vitamin D supplementation (2000 units daily) have an *80% reduced risk* of developing *type 1 diabetes* over the next twenty years.

- Shocking Vitamin D deficiency statistics:

- 32% of doctors and med school students are vitamin D deficient.

- 40% of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient.

IROBFWe have shared with you in the October, 2017 issue how voluntary contribution of Rs. 1,00,000/- by Mr Bellihal resulted in record inflow of voluntary contributions.

We had another experience of one of our members making a voluntary contribution of Rs. 5,000/- upon successful knee replacement.

The Executive Committee in its meeting on 7.5.2018 appreciated the gesture and concern for retirees of 80s and 90s who need assistance from IROBF where their own resources fall short of their requirement.

During delebrations it was felt that members can make small voluntary contributions of Rs. 500/- or multiples of Rs. 500/- when they celebrate their own or of their loved ones' birthdays, marriage anniversaries, marriage of their sons and daughters or when they undergo successful medical treatments.

The idea of sharing unique gestures is to make IOCian family bonding strong and reach out to more retirees in their silver years when small gestures may have substantial impact on their life and morale.

We will be shortly sending individual communication to those members of IROWA who have not yet joined IROBF to promote this noble cause.

For Ladies WhoUse XXL Dresses

At the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The gym gained popularity and business soared as ladies wanted to be like a mermaid. This continued till a lady (clothing size unknown) saw the pic and caption and wrote her response and pasted it alongside the pic. It read as follows:

"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.

They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.

They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?

They would have no sex life and could not bear children.

Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.

And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.

We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.

Moral - eat whatever you want to eat, and if someone tries to lecture you, eat them too.

Letter to EditorAs claimed in the Editorial of IROWA News, April 2018 issue, our Association is certainly doing commendable job of following up with IOC Management for improvement in the facilities to the retirees and keeping its members abreast of benefits announced by IOC from time to time. A noteworthy feature of the Issue is a detailed article by Shri J.K. Puri, Genl. Secretary discussing various actions to be taken by the retirees/ their spouses regarding their claims of medical expenses, ex-gratia, LIC etc. In Point 4, it is advised

that request for change of bank particulars be submitted seperately to Medical Section and ER Deptt. However, since the disbursing Deptt. is only Finance, only one intimation should suffice. Point 5 of the Article advises the retirees who retired prior to 01-01-2007 not getting ex-gratia to check with HR Deptt. every for their entitlement of ex- gratia. However, experience is that whenever you enquire, you are told not to follow up and would be advised whenever due. Moreover, while advising Ex- gratia entitlement its working is not furnished. Hence the concerned retiree is not aware as to since when it is due. It is suggested that a worksheet is given. Another feature of the Issue is "Ready Reckoner" showing the scheme, periodicity etc. for submission of Life Certificate. This will become handy for the retirees. However, I would like to suggest that instead of submission of two seperate life certificates to Medical Section and ER Deptt., only one should suffice.- M.V. BAVKAR, MUMBAI.

Letter to EditorI am grieved to learn from your editorial i.e. Frankly Speaking published last October 2017 issue that due to petition on Single point agenda referred to court by the 31.12.2006 retirees has lately made the entire pending issues complicated for due settlement.

Such unhealthy division amongst the retirees is no doubt considered to be unfortunate step as a result of which the basic interest of the majority of retirees would be severely impaired.

It is high time to ponder rationally as to how best this confrontation or feud be suitably resolved to pave the way for having a wholesome scenario.

It's time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don't just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard-earned capital.

Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren and don't feel bad spending your money on yourself. You've taken care of them for many years, and you've taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money.

Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well and get your sleep. It's easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, do tests even when you're feeling well. Stay informed.

Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together.

Don't stress over the little things. You've already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don't let the past drag you down and don't let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten.

Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: “A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.”

Be proud, both inside and out. Don't stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.

Don't lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. There's nothing worse than an older person trying to wear the current fashion among youngsters. You've developed your own sense of what looks good on you – keep it and be proud of it. It's part of who you are.

ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make

sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks. You'll be surprised what old friends you'll meet.

Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideals as you, but they are the future, and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday's wisdom still applies today.

Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you're alive, you are part of this time.

Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it'll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around.

Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grandchildren (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live by yourself.

Don't abandon your hobbies. If you don't have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf.

Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven't seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Get out there.

Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are.

Pain and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of the life.

If you've been offended by someone – forgive them. If you've offended someone - apologize. Don't drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn't matter who was right. Someone once said: “Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Don't take that poison. Forgive, forget and move on with your life.

Laugh. Laugh away your worries Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life. But you did.

God be praised

Now is the time to be at peace and as happy as you can be!

May you live long and prosper in good health.

Between 60 and Death

IROWA NEWS

After my retirement as a Senior Medical Officer from a Govt. Hospital, I had settled in the city. A doctor friend of mine had invited me for her daughter's wedding reception at Popatwadi Town, near my city. I decided to attend the function as I had worked as a Visiting Medical Officer in the District Jail near Popatwadi, for 2 years, about 40 years back. The very name of Popatwadi took my memory into the past. The flash backs were vivid and clear. I could visualise the picture of Nameeta and her story.

40 years back, the very first day in the jail, I came across a good looking lady of about 24 years age who was brought to the jail, a day before, to undergo nine months imprisonment.

As a routine, I examined her and found her medically fit. On my enquiry she explained to me that she belonged to agriculturist family and got married at the age of 15 and has a daughter of 6 years age and a 2 years old son. Her name was Nameeta. Nameeta's husband was employed as a cooli in Govt. Foodgrain warehouses in Popatwadi Town. All such coolies were provided family quarters near the warehouses. According to Nameeta life was good for about 8 years. But severe drought in the state for 2 years continuously led to unemployment of coolies in Govt. Foodgrain warehouses as the stocks were exhausted and hence no job for coolies. They started facing poverty and hunger. The situation was getting bad to worse.

But Nameeta observed that her neighbour, in the next Quater- Ketki was not affected by the drought even though her husband and Nameeta's husband, like other coolies of the Quarters had resorted to gambling and drinking, as they all were jobless.

One evening, Nameeta dared to ask Ketki, the secret of her leading a comfortable life even though her husband, like other coolies, had lost the job in the warehouse.

Ketki secretly told Nameeta that she makes money by pick-pocketing ladies' purses, during rush hours, on the railway platform of Popatwadi Station. She lured Nameeta to join her in the business for which she assured her necessary training for pick-pocketing. A hesitant Nameeta, ultimately thought it prudent to join

the business rather than facing hunger with 2 children.

After some training, Nameeta also joined Ketki in pick-pocketing ladies' purses on Railway platform of Popatwadi station during morning and evening rush hours. Nameeta has been successful pick-pocketer. But one day, she was caught red-handed and was handed over to the Railway Police. Later, she was taken to the Court and was sentenced 9 months jail for the crime. Accordingly, she was brought to District Jail, a day before I met her, for the first time.

During the period of 9 months neither her husband, nor her children came to see her in the jail, even though children are not allowed to meet inmates in jail. She too was not keen to face her children with the stigma of a pick-pocket.

I remember, after completion of jail term of 9 months, she was released from jail. Before leaving, she came to meet me. She was worried. She told me that she won't go to Popatwadi Quarters to face her children and husband but instead she would go to her native village and stay with parents and work in the fields. The jail superintendent and I wished her good luck, and said goodbye.

After 2 days, Nameeta returned to our District Jail and with folded hands requested me and the Jail Superintendent Mrs. Asha Rani, to take her back in the jail.

She narrated to us that after reaching the native place, her mother embraced her with tears but her father pulled her from her mother's arms and shunted her out of the house saying “Nameeta! You have brought disgrace to your parents, we are ashamed of you that you have been pick-pocketing and have been jailed for the offence, we do not want to see you in our house, Go away!”

Nameeta pleaded before the village folks who had gathered there. But it was of no avail. They all ordered her to leave the village forthwith. Hence, she thought that the jail would give her shelter.

We explained to her that her wish cannot be fulfilled under the Law & Rules of the Jail. However, we arranged for her lunch from outside hotel and asked her to relax for sometime as Asha Rani and myself wanted to find out a workable solution for Nameeta's problem, as she was not ready to go back to her husband and children.

After she had finished her lunch, Asha Rani and myself chalked out a plan for Nameeta. We contributed Rs. 50/- each to make Rs.100/- (Rs.100/- of that time would be Rs.1000/- worth today). We called our Sepoy and asked him to buy a basket made of bamboo sticks and some non-perishable vegetables within Rs.100/-. The Sepoy

IROWA NEWS

In Pursuit of JoyJust recently I bought two live fishes and I realiaed them in the waters of KalindiKunj. They wagged their tail fins fervently and took a dive in the water.

Such was their joy. The joy we see in nature daily. In the birds chirping in the morning and in a child's laughter. When did we last experience this kind of joy? How long did it last? Is there any way we could experience the same kind of joy at all moments and forever? I wonder.

The human mind is programmed in such a way that it links joy to fulfilment of its wishes. For a student it would

be getting good marks . . . then getting admission in good college . . . then job of his choice . . . ideal partner . . . promotion and the cycle continues. Another example is that joy is also linked to shopping and purchases. Buying a new car, clothes jewellery and so on. There are innumerable examples and the list can go on.

One can summarise and say that the greater the deprivation of something, the greater is the joy of getting it. But unfortunately this joy is always short lived as wish lists are never ending and so joy becomes ellusive.

So what is the key to everlasting joy?

Joy resides within us. So the answer to this question also lies within us, that is in our inner world. It is not what we receive from the outer world but it is what we change inside us that would bring everlasting joy.

Think of a skill you wanted to acquire but are stuck up. What if you are able to crack the code and become say a computer expert or a good cook! Or a photographer! What if you wanted to become more healthy and you conquer you laziness by becoming more disciplined in your exercising routine and food habits! What if you become less angry and more tolerable towards others by loving ourself more! . . . and there can be innumerable examples on this. The list can go on.

In other words, what if you become your own trainer, identify your own weaknesses and work on them step by step. You pat your own back and you approve yourself. Wouldn't this inner joy then reflect in the outer world in your behavior, in your interactions? Wouldn't you then become less critical, less judgemental and less complaining and instead wouldn't you start appreciating, empathizing and creating value in all what you speak and all what you do bringing joy in each moment of your life and of others?

Try it out. It is fun.

completed his task, soon. Thereafter, we handed over the basket full of vegetables to Nameeta and asked her to earn her livelihood by selling vegetables and rolling over the money for further sale. Thereafter, she thanked us and left the jail premises. For the Jail Superintendent and for me the story was over.

I was visiting Popatwadi after a gap of 40 years. Things had changed in Popatwadi. Railway Station was humming with lot of activities and was crowded.

While returning from the wedding reception at night, I came across an attractive white-pumpkin being sold near the Popatwadi Railway Bridge, by a vegetable vendor. I liked it. I picked it up and asked the vendor “How much have I to pay for this?”

“Madam! You have not to pay for it. It is free for you” The vendor lady said.

“Are you joking?” I asked her.

“No madam! I am serious”. She said “Probably, you have not recognised me.” She continued, “I am Nameeta! Nameeta of District Jail whom you had helped to start the business of selling vegetables, 40 years back. And, you see, now I own 2 tapries(Kiosks) of my own. I earn good rent and good income from business.” It is all because of you. I always remembered you. I am lucky that I am having your “Darshan” today. When you told me to sell vegetables I sincerely did it while staying under Popatwadi Railway Station Bridge and selling vegetables on the bridge.

I could locate my children and husband. He gave my daughter to me and left with the son somewhere I am not aware. Good news is that I had given education my daughter and got her married to a gentleman I feel proud of my son- in-law and my daughter. They are happy in their village. My granddaughter has just passed her H.S.C....” I could not hear further properly as I became emotional at that moment and tears started rolling from my eyes.

They could not leave each other in the desert, so they continued the journey thinking that they will resolve the dispute when they reach their destination. They did not speak with each other while walking.

Optimum Strategies for Creativity and Longevity

By Sing Lin, Ph.D.

Member of National Council of

Chinese Institute of Engineers – USA/Greater New

York Chapter, and Member of Board of Director of

National Taiwan University Alumni Association –

Greater New York March 2002

1. Most Creative Years in the Life

The Nobel Laureate, Dr. Leo Esaki, delivered the

distinguished lecture entitled "Innovation and

Evolution: Reflections on a Life in Research" in the

University of Texas at Dallas in the afternoon of Feb.

23, 2002 during the 2002 US National Engineering

Week. In this lecture, Dr. Esaki indicated that most

of the great discoveries and innovations by the

Nobel Laureates occurred at the average age of 32

even though the Nobel prizes were awarded 10 or

20 years afterwards. Furthermore, Dr. Esaki

indicated that the peak creativity of most scientists

occurred around the age range of 20 to 30 years. As

one gets older, the experience increases but the

creativity decreases steadily with the age.

It is, therefore, very important to stimulate,

encourage and cultivate many young people to get

interested in science and engineering at their young

age and to provide the optimal R&D environment for

these very powerful young scientists and engineers

to unleash their very strong creativities during their

most precious and creative years around the age of

32.

2. Longevity Vs. Retirement Age

The pension funds in many large corporations (e.g.,

Boeing, Lockheed Martin, AT&T, Lucent

Technologies, etc.) have been "Over Funded"

because many "late retirees" who keep-on working

into their old age and retire late after the age of 65

tend to die within two years after their retirements. In

other words, many of these late retirees do not live

long enough to collect all their fair shares of pension

money such that they leave a lot of extra-unused

money in the pension funds resulting in the over-

funded pension funds.

Dr. Ephrem (Siao Chung) Cheng provided the

important results in the following Table 1 and the

associated chart from an actuarial study of life span

vs. age at retirement. The study was based on the

number of pension checks sent to retirees of Boeing

Aerospace.

Table 1 Actuarial Study of life span vs. age at retirem ent.

Age at Retirement

Average Age At Death

49.9

86 51.2 85.3 52.5 84.6 53.8 83.9 55.1 83.2 56.4 82.5 57.2 81.4 58.3 80 59.2 78.5 60.1 76.8 61

74.5

62.1

71.8 63.1 69.3 64.1 67.9 65.2 66.8

Table indicate that for people retired at the age of 50, their average life span is 86; whereas for people retired at the age of 65, their average life span is only 66.8. An important conclusion from this study is that for every year one works beyond age 55, one loses 2 years of life span on average.

The Boeing experience is that employees retiring at age of 65 receive pension checks for only 18 months, on average, prior to death. Similarly, the Lockheed experience is that employees retiring at age of 65 receive pension checks for only 17 months, on average, prior to death. Dr. David T. Chai indicated that the Bell Labs experience is similar to those of Boeing and Lockheed based on the casual observation from the Newsletters of Bell Lab retirees. A retiree from Ford Motor told Dr. Paul Tien-Lin Ho that the experience from Ford Motor is also similar to those in Boeing and Lockheed.

The statistics shown in the Pre-Retirement Seminar in Telcordia (Bellcore) indicates that the average age that Telcordia (Bellcore) employees start retirement is 57. Therefore, people who retire at the age of 65 or older are minority as compared to the number of early retirees.

The hard-working late retirees probably put too much stress on their aging body-and-mind such that they are so stressed out to develop various serious health problems that forced them to quit and retire. With such long-term stress-induced serious health problems, they die within two years after they quit and retire.

On the other hand, people who take early retirements at the age of 55 tend to live long and well into their 80s and beyond. These earlier retirees probably are either wealthier or more able to plan and manage their various aspects of their life, health and career well such that they can afford to retire early and comfortably.

These early retirees are not really idling after their early retirements to get old. They still continue doing some

work. But they do the work on the part-time basis at a more leisure pace so that they do not get too stressed out. Furthermore, they have the luxury to pick and chose the types of part-time work of real interest to them so that they can enjoy and love doing that "fun" work at a more leisure pace.

The late retirees are small in number, tend to die quickly after retirement and disappear from the population of old people beyond the age of 70. Late retirees, therefore, have very little weight on the statistical average life expectancy of the population of "old people" dominated by the early retirees.

Several years ago, a Japanese friend of mine told me that most Japanese people retire at the age of 60 or earlier. This may be one of the factors contributing to the long average life span of Japanese people.

3. Changing Trend of US Pension Plans

The traditional pension plans of many major US companies used to place a lot of value on the experience of long-term older employees by increasing the pension money rapidly and nonlinearly for long-term employees as their age + service year increases beyond the threshold of the rule of 75. Most long-term employees cross this critical threshold at about the age of 55. On the other hand, the early retirees incur very heavy penalty in pension and in other associated retiree benefits (e.g., employer paid medical insurance, employer paid life insurance, death benefits for family, etc.) when they retire before they meet the rule of 75.

However, in recent few years, many large US corporations are switching from their traditional retirement pension plans to the new portable Cash Balance Plans. The new portable cash balance plans are much more favorable to the younger employees but are very unfavorable to the long-term older employees. Some older long-term employees found that when their employers switched from the traditional pension plans to the cash balance plan, their pensions were reduced by 30% to 50%.

One of the implications of this trend towards the new cash balance plan is that the US corporations are now placing more value on the higher creativity and adaptability of younger employees and less value on the experience of the older employees. This is consistent with the accelerating pace of innovations and technology advances. The creative and dynamic younger employees are better positioned, than the older employees do, to keep up with the faster pace of technology advances.

4. Conclusion and Recommendations

The most precious, creative and innovative period in your life is the 10-year period around the age of 32. Plan your career path to use this precious 10-year period wisely and effectively to produce your greatest achievements in your life.

The pace of innovations and technology advances is getting faster and faster and is forcing everybody to compete fiercely at the Internet speed on the information super-highways. The highly productive and highly efficient workplace in USA is a pressure-cooker and a high-speed battleground for highly creative and dynamic young people to compete and to flourish.

However, when you get older, you should plan your career path and financial matter so that you can retire comfortably at the age of 55 or earlier to enjoy your long, happy and leisure retirement life into your golden age of 80s and beyond. In retirement, you can still enjoy some fun work of great interest to you and of great values to the society and the community, but at a part-time leisure pace on your own term.

On the other hand, if you are not able to get out of the pressure-cooker or the high-speed battleground at the age of 55 and "have" to keep on working very hard until the age of 65 or older before your retirement, then you probably will die within 18 months of retirement. By working very hard in the pressure cooker for 10 more years beyond the age of 55, you give up at least 20 years of your life span on average.

Back in the days when Germany was divided, a huge w a l l s e p a r a t e d E a s t a n d We s t B e r l i n . One day, some people in East Berlin took a truck load of garbage and dumped it on the West Berlin side. The people of West Berlin could have done the same thing, but they didn't. Instead they took a truck load of canned goods, bread, milk and other provisions, and neatly stacked it on the East Berlin side.On top of this stack they placed the sign:*“EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS"*

How very true! You can only give what you have.

What do you have inside of you? Is it hate or love?

Violence or peace?

Death or life?

Capacity to build or capacity to destroy?

What have you acquired over the years.

*"EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS"*

Think about it!

Each Gives What He Hasother side of the oasis and got trapped in the swamp and started getting drawn inside. When his friend saw this, he came swimming right on that side and risking his own life saved his friend. The friend who was slapped earlier and now rescued from the swamp wrote on a large stone near the oasis "Today my friend saved my life"

The friend who had saved him saw this and asked, "When I slapped you, you wrote on the sand! But when I saved you, you wrote on the stone, why so !!! ?"

The friend replied, "Whenever someone hurts us, we should write it on the sand, where the winds of time will erase it but when someone treats us well, then we should write it on the stone, where no one can erase it”.

Learning---

The worst events in life should not be kept in the heart for a long time. We should spend our life happily with the remembrance of good events.

Often we remember the mistakes of people and forget the goodness which results in cracks in relationships. There is a burden on the mind too. This increases the negativity. But if we remember the good, then the whole problem will end.
