Indie Music Genre
Indie Sub-Genre’s
Indie – music formed around the idea of a DIY ethic, and a watered down version of Punk.
Indie Folk – mix of Indie Rock and Folk music
Indie Rock – rock music linked to indie subculture
Indie Pop - melodic and optimistic version of pop-rock – seen as the hype of hipster and modern indie subcultures.
The Indie ImageMany indie artists share a certain “look” or image in the way in which they
dress; and like many other genres, including metal and acoustic, they usually follow a particular pattern:
• Jeans – Black or dark denim, usually folded up at the bottom• T-shirts• Plaid shirts• “Classy” and “Cool” shoes – vans/canvas/platforms etc.• Sweaters• Shirts, with the top button done up
Although there appears to be a particular stlye in the “Indie” genre, indie is all about being independant so the fashion and image can vary.
Some Codes and Conventions of the Indie Genre
• Indie musicians and bands, especially with the indie folk sub-genre, use instruments such as guitars, banjos, pianos and violins.
• Artists and bands follow a particular image, yet always dress appropriately for the season.
• Indie folk artists use ambient lighting in their music videos or photographs.
• Although the indie genre is usually associated with vintage/light colours, Indie rock is associated with more vibrant colours such as Red, Black and white.
• It is a very niche market – small audience although it is becoming an increasingly popular genre.
