53 Years of creating community through the arts!

OUR  MissiOnThe Durham Arts Council's mission is to promote excellence in and access to the creation, experience, and active suport of the arts for all people of our community.

our HIStorYFounded in 1954 to promote and nurture the arts of Durham, Allied Arts was renamed Durham Arts Council, Inc. (DAC) in 1975. Three years later, the Council moved into the historic Central High School and City Hall building which was constructed in 1906. In the mid-1980s, after a three year renovation, the city-owned building became DAC’s long-term home.

our FuNDINgDAC is a private, 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that receives funding through grants and contributions from the the North Carolina Arts Council, the City of Durham, private foundations, corporations and individuals, plus earned income from fee-based programs and services. For more information about Durham Arts Council programs and giving opportunities is available by calling (919) 560-2707 or online at www.durhamarts.org.

For 53 years, the Durham Arts Council has helped shape the artistic and cultural landscape of the region through the support of a diverse community of artists, patrons and organizations. We have achieved this through steadfast dedication to our mission of promoting excellence in and access to the creation, experience and active support of the arts for all people.

As one of the oldest arts councils in the country, and historically one of the strongest in North Carolina, the Durham Arts Council fills not one, but three major goals through which it carries out its mission:

New! uNDerStaNDINg tHe HumaN FIgureUnlock the mystery of the Human Figure! In this two-part seminar designed for all levels, you will learn some of the major principles of representational figurative sculpture. The seminars will NOT focus on abstract representation.

Series I: exploring basic FormLearn the abstract forms at the foundation of representational figurative sculpture. By breaking down the complex figure into objective geometric forms, you will learn the groundwork for modeling the many complexities of the surface forms.07Sup652.9thursdays, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pmJuly 12, 19 & 26 (3 weeks) Lara Piper, Instructor$100 or two payments of $50

Series II: exploring gestureAre you afraid to attempt to sculpt the figure because of its complexities? Or have you sculpted the figure and are unsatisfied with the results? Series II will help you achieve dynamic poses and communicate the theme of the piece. By focusing on the whole gesture rather than on the particulars. 07Sup652.10thursdays, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pmAugust 2 & 9 (2 weeks) Lara Piper, Instructor$80 or two payments of $40Lara Piper began sculpting in 1998 after retiring from a successful 20-year acting career. She studied sculpture with Robert Cunningham in LA and in NY, with Anthony Antonios. Sculpting the human form is her passion and she continues to study anatomy and the human form in motion in order to capture the dynamic beauty and vitality of man in action.

New! tHrowN & altereD!Put your knowledge of wheel work to use by creating the most unique, one of a kind art work. In this class, you will assemble simple thrown forms to build bigger, more complex utilitarian or sculptural forms. We will also use hand building techniques in composing our pieces. Decorating techniques using glazes and slips will also be covered in this class. Students need to complete a beginner’s wheel class before taking this class.07Sup652.8mondays, 6:30 PM – 9:00 PMJune 18 – August 6 (8 weeks) Inbar Rehes, Instructor$174 or two payments of $87Inbar is artist and an art educator who works mainly in ceramics. New! beginning book artsBook making is an art form that often encourages other endeavors, including journaling, drawing, photography, and in short, telling the stories of life. In this workshop, you’ll be introduced to book building by creating a Concertina or Lotus book, which folds out uniquely like a pop-up book. After you’ve learned some essential techniques, you’ll master Japanese Stab Binding. This hard-bound book will make a great journal or sketchbook, and the stitching technique can be used in a variety of designs. Bring an old phone book, awl, old stipple brush or glue brush, utility knife, metal or metal edged ruler, and a pencil and a $15 materials fee.
