Objective

• Indoor GSM Systems are the Specific Solutions in Radio Network Design Where it is needed

• This presentation intends to give an overview of Indoor GSM Systems

Indoor Cell Planning Process

• Capacity Dimensioning

– What is the Aim of Indoor Application?

• Public– Such as Shopping Malls, Airport terminals

• Business– Business Centres

Indoor Cell Planning Process

• Antenna and BTS Systems– Building Specifications and Coverage and

Capacity Demands– Antenna Design Schematic – Future Extension

• For Capacity• For Coverage

Most Commonly Used Antenna Types

• Flat Panel, Directional Antennas

Page 7: Indoor Planning

• Omni Directional Antennas

BTS Systems– RF Repeaters

• Easy and Quick Installation• Low Cost• Temporary Solution (Not Proper for Increasing Capacity)

Indoor Cell Planning Process

• RF Design

– Link Budget

• Required Signal Strength• Design Levels• BTS Output Power

Indoor Cell Planning Process

• Frequency Planning for Indoor GSM Systems

– Planning with re-use of Outdoor Frequencies• Better to assign manually by excluding the frequencies of

surrounding cells and the adjacent frequencies• Good to apply FH to smooth out the interference• BTS Output Power should be increased if the available

frequencies are too few.

Up to 70% new traffic with in the Indoor cells after Implementing In-building solutions

• Improve coverage and Capacity inside building using solution shows an increase of the cellular traffic with up to 70% for larger buildings. For e.g. Tunnels and metros with no presentation at all from the outdoor cellular network, all traffic will go through the in building solution.

Conclusion

• Indoor systems can be solution if the coverage is weak from outdoor cells or causing to bad quality

• To build indoor systems into the buildings, which are generating high traffic, can reduce the network load by handling that traffic

• In developed business centres, indoor system can replace the fixed network

• Indoor systems are sometimes the complements that can provide a good image.
