11.4 IASC Reports and Transition Update – Refer Attachment 7 12. General Business 12.1 A few Taringa Road residents attended the meeting to voice their concerns over the Taringa Road ‘Stop, Drop and Go’ Redevelopment. They wished to express how very disappointed they were with the lack of community consultation. Their perception is that the proposed redevelopment will not improve safety and will only push the problem further up the road. They believe that improved driver behaviour will greatly improve the safety without the need for the redevelopment. Driver behaviour can be achieved via infringement notices from the Council or police. They also raised concerns about the loss of established trees along Taringa Parade as well as wildlife. One resident raised concerns about the impact the redevelopment will have on accessing their property. Some possible alternatives discussed were changes to the Council bus timetable to allow students to arrive at school at more suitable times. Active school travel was also discussed. 12.3 An attendee of the meeting raised concerns about pedestrians crossing Finney Road and was enquiring if the ISS P&C could lobby Council for a review of pedestrian safety. Members of the P&C replied that over the years, Council has been contacted regarding pedestrian safety and to date no improvements have been made.

12.4 Due to the transition of IASC to the ISS P&C, three new ISS P&C bank accounts are required for after school care use. Details of the new bank accounts are as follows: Michael Berkman, MP advised that he plans on sending a letter to Council, Cr Julian Simmonds & the Lord Mayor to request a pause on the redevelopment so that community consultation can occur. The ISS P&C reiterated that its main focus is on child safety. OPEN ITEM: Sarah or some representative of the IASC subcommittee will be happy to attend the meeting. Additionally, when the meeting date is known please notify the ISS P&C to see if more representatives are able to attend. YEAR ONE – Teaching and Learning

CURRICULUM FOCUS – In Mathematics through the proficiency strands of understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning students have opportunities to develop understandings of: • Number and place value - count numbers, represent the ones counting sequence to and from 100 from any starting point,

represent and record the twos counting sequence, represent and order 'teen' numbers, show standard partitioning of teen numbers, flexibly partition teen numbers, describe teen numbers referring to the ten and ones, describe growing patterns, represent two-digit numbers, represent, record and solve simple addition and subtraction problems, investigate parts and whole of quantities, investigate subtraction and explore commutativity.

• Using units of measurement - sequence days of the week and months of the year, investigate the features and function of

calendars, record significant events, compare time durations, investigate length, compare lengths using direct comparisons, make indirect comparisons of length, measure lengths using uniform informal units.

PEDAGOGY FOCUS – (Math) The year one teachers are using hands on interactives and open ended questions to explore the above concepts in Maths. Some teachers are working together on inquiry based mathematical experiences for the students and are making it a focus of their triad observations.

Page 9: INDOOROOPILLY STATE SCHOOL P&C MINUTES FOR MEETING … · ATTACHMENTS INDOOROOPILLY STATE SCHOOL P&C MINUTES FOR MEETING HELD, Monday 11 th February 2019, 7pm 1. Present – E Bateman,

YEAR TWO – Teaching and Learning

CURRICULUM FOCUS – In English students are exploring texts to analyse how stories convey a message about issues that

relate to families and friends. Students will write an imaginative new narrative about family relationships and/or friendships for a

familiar animal character.

PEDAGOGY FOCUS – (ENGLISH) Teachers are working on emphasising the planning process before writing begins. We are

making deliberate teaching choices that build on the students’ ability to link problems in stories to their resolutions. (NAPLAN

DATA indicates that Australian school students need to improve in this area of idea and character development)

Student Services

This committee continues to review student achievement and learning needs on a regular basis. All referred students are

currently receiving the mode of support deemed best for their learning. These support systems involve either withdrawal from

classroom for intensive literacy or numeracy support, small group support or in class literacy and numeracy report. The

committee is also currently review the school’s ICP development process to ensure it aligned with EQ policy and meets the

needs of students and teachers.

Student Council

The election process for Student Council representatives is underway, and will be completed by Friday, 8th March. The Student

Council Badge Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, 3rd April at 9:15am in the hall. Parents of elected students will be invited

to attend.

Incursions and Excursions

Incursions and excursions can be a great way to stimulate students’ curiosity and enhance their learning. In recent weeks Prep

students have watched chicks hatching in their classrooms, Year Ones have learnt about responsible pet ownership and the

Year Six classes have been dazzled by the Surfing Scientist’s presentation. In week 8, our Year Three students will visit the

ANZAC Memorial Church to hear stories of some local ANZACs and view ways they have been commemorated.

Connectedness and Wellbeing

A focus for all this year is student and staff well-being, and the Year 5 & 6 sector have been encouraged to consider

connectedness as part of this. Staff have been asked to reflect on the way that they connect with their students, their families

and each other in order to develop and maintain genuine and positive relationships. The teachers have been asked to dedicate

some time at year level meetings to discuss what this will look like for them.

Swimming

26 students represented Indooroopilly State School at the recent northern Eagles swimming trials, and seven of those students

qualified for the Met West trials. An excellent result!

Interschool Sport

Interschool sport for Years 5 & 6 students will begin in Week 1 of Term 2 this year. All time frames for the sporting calendar

have had to been adjusted, due to the Nationals being held in Darwin earlier than they have typically been in past years. The

PE team will speak with students as to the sports available, and there will still be an option for students to participate in a school

based sport program, as introduced last year.

Accelerated Reading

Years 3 and 4 teachers participated in an online professional learning event about vocabulary instruction related to the texts

used in Accelerated Reading.

Events and Operations

NAPLAN

Page 10: INDOOROOPILLY STATE SCHOOL P&C MINUTES FOR MEETING … · ATTACHMENTS INDOOROOPILLY STATE SCHOOL P&C MINUTES FOR MEETING HELD, Monday 11 th February 2019, 7pm 1. Present – E Bateman,

Year 3 and 5 class lists have been submitted to NAPLAN. Currently, disability adjustments are being organised. Parents will

be made aware, via the school newsletter, of their right to request an exemption for their children from the testing. This week

the NAPLAN practice platform will open so that students can begin to become familiar with the format of the tests.

Religious Instruction

Religious instruction classes began on 27 February. Ecumenical, Buddhist and Jewish classes were offered. We have not

been able to locate an instructor for Hindu. Ecumenical and Buddhist faiths have requested that information pamphlets be

available at the office should anyone request them.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is on Thursday, 21st of March. We are encouraging all students to wear orange or cultural traditional dress on the

day. Harmony Day is all about celebrating the multicultural nature and Australia, and appreciating the diverse contributions of

all to our society. We feel that this is a day worth recognising and celebrating at ISS, as it truly reflects the culture of our school.

School Cross Country

The building and construction around the school grounds and the shorter time frame proved a challenge in setting up and

organising this year’s cross country event, but the PE team worked hard to ensure that our students still had the opportunity to

participate in this event. Staff were on hand to ensure student safety in the Moore Park area, as was a member of the QPS, at

our request. Thank you to the PE team for organising and co-ordinating this event under challenging conditions.

Athletics Carnival

The school Athletics Carnival for Years 3-6 students will be held at UQ on Thursday, 28th March. We have asked

representatives from the BCC for consideration, as we will need to use the Taringa Parade zone for the buses. As our student

population has grown, and we have a limited time frame at UQ, some of the field events will be held at school in the lead up to

the carnival. The PE team are emphasising a high student participation rate, with events that all students are able to compete

in.

Growing Communities Invitation

In the recent newsletter, an invitation was extended to the whole school community to become part of the Growing Communities

Group. Participation from the school community was limited last year, which does not reflect the need we have for the GCG

liaisons. Parents and families have been invited to email us with dates of significant cultural occasions, so that we can include

them and recognise them in our school calendar. They have also been invited to organise an event (like the volunteers do for

the Pancake Breakfasts) to promote awareness and celebrate these occasions. Any suggestions as to how to increase the

volunteer capacity of the GCG would be most welcome. Dr Shirin Jamarani has presented workshops to our staff on the

challenges that our CALD families face, and has offered to do the same for parents, if there is an audience for it.

Parent Teacher Interviews

The Prep teachers are currently conducting parent teacher interviews. Year One to Six will be offering interviews in week 10 of

Term 1 and weeks 1 and 2 of Term 2.

ICT

Forty-eight laptops have been purchased.

WH&S

Students and staff in Years 3-6 will practise an emergency evacuation from the hall in Term 1.

Our Facilities

New Build

The nature of fill within the building site has required unexpected intervention. This will result in a redesign and additional

support piles. This will have a negative impact upon building handover timelines. Temporary classrooms will remain until we are

ready to occupy the new build.

Staffing Update

Pre-service teachers and TAFE volunteers

Currently 2 Preservice teachers from Griffith University are completing their Final Practical experience with us.

Victoria is with Ms Helen Mego (6/5G)

Paul is with Mrs Gilly McAusland (2B)

More pre-service teachers will be onsite throughout the year.

Professional Development

Year Level Planning

Each year level participates in two half day planning sessions per term. The first planning sessions were held in weeks 3 and 4.

They helped to ensure teams had a cohesive and consistent understanding of the first units of work and associated assessment

tasks. The next planning sessions, scheduled for weeks 9 and 10 will provide teachers with time and resources to develop deep

understanding of the term 2 curriculum units.

Regional Curiosity and Powerful Learning

Four staff members attended a Critical and Creative Thinking professional learning day with cluster schools. Teachers who

attended are progressively sharing this information with the whole staff.

Intentional Collaboration amongst staff

In addition to the well-established, collaborative practice of planning work at a unit level twice a term, some teachers have been

meeting after school to plan lessons together. Their plan is to observe each other as they teach to ascertain the impact on

students’ learning. They intend to refine their practice as a result of this intentional collaboration.

Requirements from this meeting:

Clean, green team update: 11 March 2019 Here is an update on Clean, green team activities for the past month: EcoMarine activity: The 2019 EcoMarine ambassador and support crew leaders have now been presented with their badges and shirts. Eight present and past EcoMarines attended the Clean Up Australia Day event at Kangaroo Point cliffs on Sunday 3 March. Container recycling scheme: The Indooroopilly SS P&C has a Scheme ID: C10069947 and anyone can nominate this when returning their containers so that the school receives the benefit. The Prep Welcome BBQ was held in February and containers were collected during this event. This reaped $24.20 for the P&C . More information on the scheme and container refund points is available at: https://www.containersforchange.com.au/. Litterbusters: has been very popular with the children again, particularly those in the junior and middle school grades. We would love more parents to join us to help supervise children collecting rubbish, particularly with so much construction happening around the place. Clean Up Australia Day: For the 4th year in a row, we have taken part in Clean Up Australia Day for Schools. A big thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday 1 March. Together we collected 2 buckets of soft plastics, 2 buckets of recyclables and 3 buckets of general waste. Across Australia more than 680,000 volunteers across 6384 sites removed an estimated 150,000 tonnes of rubbish from the environment during Clean Up Week. It's fantastic that we were able to contribute to this!

More new families to join the school.

Stable weekly volunteers.

Sales of uniforms will increase due to the increasing number of students.

Rely on help from our volunteers to carry out special events throughout the year, such as Prep-

Orientation day, Senior Polos, embroidered hat, and at the beginning of the school year.

Coaches report – Indooroopilly swim club:

Learn to swim:

We have added an extra teacher to Learn to swim and great to see the classes sell out this term.

I am looking to add Adult lessons to the program next term.

Squads:

The numbers have dropped a little as year 6 kids have moved on to another school. We have had several new kids

join the program from outside the school or new arrivals at Indooroopilly School.

As we build the learn to swim program we will start to see the natural progression through into the squads as this

will take another 12 months before we see the results of this.

Coaches:

Looking to a lot more stability and availability to our staff roster and I believe we are starting to see this as we

bring in older and qualified staff.

Competition:

We had 8 swimmers compete at the Brisbane Junior Metropolitan Championships and performed very well. Great

to see kids are competing again and look forward to many other kids competing next season.

Administration:

Purchased Learn to swim benches for the extra classes which are proving a great help for the teachers in the learn

to swim and stroke correction classes.

Very happy with the build-up of numbers through the whole program. Coaches and teacher have performed very

well and looking forward to next season.

The parking problems in Taringa Parade have caused some problems with parents and have seen some kids not

continuing their lessons and waiting till the road works finish. This has also caused problems on Club nights as

parents are unable to find parking close enough to the pool.

We are having an awards and Pizza nigh on the 22nd March for our last club night so should be lots of fun.

Thanks again to the support of committee members and parents at club night. I have spoken to a number of

parents about being involved with the club and have had some positive responses so hope to have more

volunteers to take on rolls around the club.

Thank you

Mark Davies – Head Coach.
