1

All of which should make specifying them a lot easier. Product performance and engineered value are only the most obvious benefits that insulation offers a Power and Process Plant or Manufacturing Plant.

Insulation products also control process temperature, control condensation, and protect personnel. They make manufacturing processes more efficient, and give exposed piping and equipment a durable, finished appearance—and when those products are made by Knauf Insulation, they offer your facility an even higher performance level.

Knauf Insulation industrial insulation products have excellent thermal performance, lower installed cost and are more readily available than other conventional power and process insulation products.

2

Superior PerformanceKnauf Insulation set the industry standard for performance, by combining superior control and installation ease over heat loss and gain into such products as Knauf Insulation Earthwool® 1000° Pipe Insulation with ECOSE® Technology, which outperforms traditional rock mineral wool products in many applications.

Ease of InstallationEvery product we manufacture is designed to make installation easier, faster and more convenient. For large pipe or tank projects, the flexibility of our Earthwool Pipe & Tank Insulation makes it easier for installers to get a proper fit and a smooth, professional finish, especially on curved or irregular surfaces. And the unique manufacturing process we use for our Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation results in highly consistent density and a “layered” construction—making it easier to cut, notch out, and install.

Readily AvailableUnlike conventional industrial insulation materials, Knauf Insulation glass mineral wool products typically are in stock in our centrally located manufacturing plant, even our non-standard pipe insulations are available in less than 14 days from receipt of order. Distributors are located in every key market across North America.

Case Study:Renova Energy Ethanol Plant

Knauf Insulation was brought to the Wyoming Ethanol project through a partnership between insulation contractor DP Industrial and distributor International Technifab. For the Wyoming Ethanol expansion, DPI used Knauf Insulation 1000° Pipe Insulation, Kiwikflex® Pipe and Tank Insulation and Elevated Temperature (ET) Board. Jim Dunks of DPI has been pleased with the performance of all of these products, singling out Knauf Insulation 1000° Pipe Insluation for helping his crews stay busy and within budget.

”We’ve used other products that haven’t performed nearly as well,” he said. ”The paper [facing] falls off or doesn’t line up, or it’s not perfectly round. It’s a huge thing. Without the right product, the quality looks bad and your labor costs go up. It’s hard to recover from a situation like that.””We don’t have those problems with Knauf [pipe insulation].”

A variety of piping and equipment sizes in the Wyoming Ethanol facility confronted DPI’s crews. Manufacturing ethanol, from corn to fuel, takes the product through a series of processing and holding tanks. At the Torrington facility, these ranged from 1' x 4' to 15' x 45', with the tallest vessels rising four stories to nearly 80'. Special scaffolding was erected and moved from tank to tank as DPI workers insulated the largest of these. Nearly 11,000 linear feet of new piping ran throughout the buildings and between and among the tanks and equipment.

During the project, the new pipe and equipment was installed in the existing plant as well as in newly-constructed space that expanded the total area of the facility by 40%. In many cases, it was more cost-effective to retrofit the new vessels without removing the old, leading to space constraints that challenged installers.

Fortunately, Knauf Insulation offers a mix of products that allowed a smooth installation for all of these circumstances. Knauf Insulation 1000° Pipe Insulation for the small and large-bore piping, Knauf Insulation Kwikflex Pipe and Tank Insulation for the smaller and mid-sized vessels, and 15,000 square feet of Knauf Insulation Elevated Temperature Board for the large tanks. DPI Project Manager Dan Tobin has seen all of these products first-hand during his 23 years in the business. He was impressed again during the course of this 16-week installation.

A Solution for Every Challenge

"Knauf's pipe insulation is great to work with. It cuts smooth, with no loose fibers. You can tell it's wound better than other pipe insulation too, so it goes on easily.

— Dan Tobin, DPI Project Manager

Hot Pipe• May be installed while the system is in operation, at all

temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C).• Maximum surface temperature of ASJ+ should not exceed

150°F (66°C).

Cold Pipe• Use a continuous vapor retarder on piping operating below

ambient temperatures.• Seal all joints, surfaces, seams and fittings to prevent

condensation.• On below freezing applications, and in high-abuse areas, the

product should be protected with a PVC vapor retarding outer jacket. In addition, exposed ends of insulation shall be sealed with vapor barrier mastic installed per the mastic manufacturer's instructions. Vapor seals at butt joints shall be applied at 12' to 21' intervals; at the Engineer’s discretion and at each fitting to isolate any water incursion.

• On below ambient water systems operating in high humidity conditions, it is recommended that the same guidelines be followed as listed above for below freezing applications.

Outside Applications• Do not expose pipe insulation to weather. It must be covered

with appropriate jacketing, mastic or vapor retardant coatings.• All exposed surfaces must be protected.

Storage• Protect insulation from water damage or other abuse, welding

sparks and open flame.• Cartons are not designed for outside storage. • Vacuum packaging is available to maximize shipping. Vacuum

packaging Knauf Insulation Pipe Insulation will reduce some mechanical properties of the insulation. By ordering vacuum packaged products, the customer acknowledges these reduced properties and assumes responsibilities for the fitness for use in their application.

General Guidelines• All sections should be firmly butted. Seal circumferential joint

with a minimum 4" (102 mm) wide butt strip.

• All piping should have continuous insulation.• Position longitudinal lap at top to minimize dirt and

moisture accumulation.• Insulation thickness must be adequate to assure 150°F (66°C)

exterior surface temperature maximum for personnel protection.

Earthwool® 1000° Pipe Insulation & Earthwool® Redi-Klad® 1000° Pipe Insulation

Redi-Klad• Keep adhesive and contact surfaces free from dirt and water,

and seal immediately once adhesive is exposed Earthwool Redi-Klad 1000° Pipe Insulation should be installed in dry conditions with no moisture present.

• Apply when ambient and insulation surface temperatures are between 0°F and 130°F (-18°C and 54°C).

• If stored below 0°F or above 130°F, allow insulation cartons to stand within recommended temperature range for 24 hours prior to application.

• Do not store product below -20°F (-29°C) or above 150°F (66°C).

• When using Knauf Insulation's Redi-Klad closure system, make sure the longitudinal and circumferential joints are properly sealed by rubbing the closure firmly with a squeegee.

• When using Knauf Earthwool Redi-Klad 1000° Pipe Insulation, the surface temperature of the insulation should not exceed 150°F (66°C) during the life of the insulation.

Fittings and Hangers• Use metal, PVC, or Proto EXOD 225 CPVC fitting covers.

For below ambient piping systems, caution should be taken to prevent punctures, tears, or rips in Redi-Klad vapor barrier. Additionally, all fitting insulation surfaces must have independent, field applied vapor barriers. Prior to installing fitting insulation, all exposed ends of pipe insulation sections must be vapor sealed.

• Fittings should be insulated to same thickness as the adjoining insulation.

• Apply fittings per manufacturer's instructions.• When required by specification, a hard insert of sufficient

length should be used to avoid compression of the insulation.

Additional Precautions• Glass mineral wool may cause temporary skin irritation. Wear

long sleeved, loose-fitting clothing, head covering, gloves and eye protection when handling and applying material.

• Wash with soap and warm water after handling.• Wash work clothes separately and rinse washer.• Use a disposable mask/respirator designed for nuisance-type

dusts where sensitivity to dust and airborne particles may cause irritation to the nose or throat.

Preparation• Apply only on clean, dry surfaces.• Pipe or vessel should be tested and released before insulation is

applied.
