INDUSTRY

Page 2: Industry and production during the roaring twenties

INTRODUCTIONThe technology and industry in USA describes United States as one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world. The early technological and industrial development in the United States was facilitated by a unique confluence of geographical, social, and economic factors. The relative lack of workers kept United States wages higher than corresponding British and European workers and provided an incentive to mechanize some tasks.

CHANGES IN THE PRODUCTION

Mass production: Mass production is the production of large amounts of standardized products, including and especially on assembly lines. The concepts of mass production are applied to various kinds of products, from fluids and particulates handled in bulk (such as food, fuel, chemicals, and mined minerals) to discrete solid parts (such as fasteners) to assemblies of such parts (such as household appliances and automobiles).

FORDISM & TAYLORISM

Fordism: Fordism, named after Henry Ford, is a notion of a modern economic and social system based on an industrialized and standardized form of mass production.

Fordism has three major principles:

• The standardization of the product (nothing hand-made)

• The use of special-purpose tools and/or equipment designed to make assembly lines

• Workers are paid higher "living" wages, so they can afford to purchase the products they make.

Taylorism: Taylorism, is a theory of management that analyzes and synthesizes workflows. Its main objective is improving economic efficiency, especially labor productivity.

Taylorism main ideas are:

• Increased skill labor through specialization and expertise.

• Greater control of time on the ground, which meant greater capital accumulation.

• Initial idea of individualism and mechanization technical role .

• Scientific study of movements and uptime.
