rial Dear Reader,

We all take it for granted that the quality of the products we purchase for our daily use and consumption will always be the same, time after time. And of course, that is the way it should be.

But how, for example, does Givenchy, a well-known French manufacturer of luxury items, ensure a consistent level of quality? How is it that Givenchy perfumes always contain the same ingredients in the same amounts and with the same composition? In this issue of our magazine, you will read how weighing, measuring, and control systems from METTLER TOLEDO ensure high quality when fully integrated in production processes, thanks to their reliability and precision. So you can always take pleasure in your favorite tried-and-true perfume, now and in the future.

Just as diverse and varied as the METTLER TOLEDO range for measuring and weighing systems are the needs of our customers and their industries. Irrespective of the specific requirements they place on us, it is a fresh challenge every time for us to demonstrate our know-how and competence. In this issue, we present a few examples to give you a glimpse of our products and services. Even important scientific studies related to climate research count on the reliability of METTLER TOLEDO.

Happy reading.

ics Givenchy – keeping

fascinating flavour constant with weighing precision

Established in 1957 by couturier Hubert de Givenchy, Parfums Givenchy has grown steadily. In 1987 the company joined the LVMH group, confirming its rapid international success.

Parfums Givenchy now employs 1500 people around the world; 83% of its sales come from perfumes, with cos-metics and skin-care products making up the remaining share. In terms of human resources, Parfums Givenchy draws on both traditional craftsman-ship and the latest technical expertise, employing laboratory technicians, line supervisors, developers, packers, etc.

With 350 employees, the Beauvais site in France is a good example of the complexity involved in the manufac-ture of perfumes and cosmetics, from the acceptance of raw materials (over 800 in the case of cosmetics) and pack-ing through to shipping of the finished products.

Quality at the heart of the industrial organizationOver and above the twenty members of the Quality department, the entire staff at Parfums Givenchy is involved in quality control. In addition, one opera-tor on each packing line is responsible for quality (specification, automatic checks, line audits, etc.). Valérie Marcadet, quality manager, adds: “We operate in accordance with GMP (good manufacturing practice) regula-tions, and as such we have to ensure the quality and traceability of data. METTLER TOLEDO, our weighing and instrumentation partner, helps us in this regard by supplying us with statistical quality control systems and software and intelligent weighing indicators linked to our management system. METTLER TOLEDO also cali-brates and services all of our weighing equipment.”

meters, pH meters, Karl Fisher equip-ment, etc.), all of which have given absolute satisfaction over a number of years.”

Production and packing of cosmeticsOn average, there are between 15 and 50 individual raw materials (wax, oil, surfactants, preservatives, UV filters, etc.) included in the composition of a cosmetic product. These materials are precision-weighed using an ID7 indicator and a number of weighing platforms with capacities ranging from 2 to 150 kg. The formulas are man-aged by means of formulation software which is linked to SAP. A printout is produced for each operation and added to the batch file. The raw materials are then introduced into compounders with capacities of 300 kg to 1.5 metric tons according to specific operating sequences. Olivier Guillot, cosmetics production manager, explains: “We have fitted some of the compounders with Flexmount weight sensors, and this allows us to take measurements during the manufacturing process.”

Just as with the raw materials, the bulk products are not released until physico-chemical, organoleptic and bacterio-logical tests have been completed. The bulk products are transferred to pack-ing lines appropriate to the cosmetic product to be packed. Here too, a num-ber of static and dynamic weighing tests are performed.

Raw materials storage Laboratory tests Cosmetics formulation Cosmetics production Weight checking during bottle filling

Production and packing of perfumesA perfume consists mainly of concen-trates or “hearts” and alcohol. The process begins with production of the “jus”; the formulation software speci-fies the ingredients to be used in the perfume composition. In view of the risk of explosion associated with the presence of alcohol, the METTLER TOLEDO weighing platforms and indi-cators are all explosion-proof. The jus is stirred and then left to mature for two to four weeks before being filtered. The quality control checks (odor, color, density, etc.) are then performed before the jus is released for packaging. The filling lines are organized in the same way as those in the cosmetics shop, with a line supervisor, safety opera-tor, quality operator and machinists. Many of the operations are interlinked: the bottle is positioned in a holder and vacuum cleaned, laser-printed

with the statutory information, filled and topped up, and then finally the spray pump and cap are added. Fabien Mauresmo, perfume production man-ager, adds: “We carry out two sets of measurements per hour, on the empty bottle and after filling, to check that we are within the legal filling toler-ances. All the data is recorded by the FreeWeigh.Net software.” The perfume bottles are then boxed, cellophane-wrapped and collected into groups of five to be palletized.

With a constant eye towards quality improvement, Parfums Givenchy is currently exploring the possibility of providing its powder suppliers with X-ray detectors to minimize the risk of impurities in the finished products. As a specialist in product inspection, METTLER TOLEDO is on hand to advise on X-ray detection.

A critical first step: acceptance of raw materials and laboratory testingParfums Givenchy handles a wide range of goods in various forms (liquids, sol-ids, powders, etc.). Raw materials are immediately given a SAP label contain-ing the information required for process traceability (Givenchy code, supplier name, batch number, expiration date, barcode, etc.). These raw materials are not released for production by the IT system until the laboratory has carried out the required physico-chemical, organoleptic, analytical, and microbio-logical tests.

Paola Tavernier, laboratory manager, explains: “We use various METTLER TOLEDO systems for our tests (density

BILLA – a leader in the Austrian retail market – offers a product range of approximately 3000 different articles. To assure quality and compliance with legislations, the item’s net content is controlled using the METTLER TOLEDO Statistical Quality Control system – FreeWeigh.Net®.

BILLA was founded in 1953 in Vienna as a discount perfumery. In 1960 the founder Karl Wlaschek transferred the concept to the food sector and intro-duced the self service system. Today, the BILLA group has around 30 000 employees and more than 1300 stores.

Logistics operation for fresh foodProducts of BILLA’s regional suppliers are delivered to seven logistics hubs, controlled and, depending on demand, and the retail strategy distributed to BILLA’s shops. The logistics hubs are located throughout Austria.

It is BILLA’s policy to check all fix weight packages net content before distribution, a demanding job consid-ering the number of different articles, suppliers and locations. With the METTLER TOLEDO Statistical Quality Control (SQC) solution FreeWeigh.Net®, BILLA has implemented an efficient, networked statistical net control system fulfilling the complex task.

Networked net content controlApproximately 1500 different items with on average ten different suppliers each had to be mapped in the net con-tent control system resulting in 15 000 article numbers.

BILLA required that all seven logistics hubs received the master data for net weight control from the central master

data system located in Vienna. Product data like EAN code, article code, nominal weight as well as the operator’s ID code are transferred from the Oracle based central ERP system to the METTLER TOLEDO application software FreeWeigh.Net®. Due to the data interface being directly linked to the central master data system, maintenance of master data for the Net Weight Control System is completely avoided. During the data import, FreeWeigh.Net® calculates all tolerance limits according with the nominal weight and in accordance to the legal European (EEC) tolerance system.

Multi-site net content controlNetworked solution for logistics hubs

WLAN for maximum mobilityDue to the mobile weighing stations equipped with WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) connectivity to the FreeWeigh.Net® server, operators have maximum flexibility when executing net weight control. The warehouse operators take the required number of units from the delivered pallets to be tested as defined in the finished packages regulation. E.g. out of 700 salad packages delivered in one order, the operator takes 50 units, selects the product by barcode scanner, enters the order number on the scale and weighs package by package. FreeWeigh.Net®

checks the measured net weight values against the finished packages regula-tion definitions. In case of a tolerance violation, the system would immedi-ately indicate an error message on the scale’s display.

If the net weight is not in accordance with the finished packages regulation, the whole delivered batch is returned to the supplier.

Key benefits for BILLAMr. Stefan Grusling, Associate Super-visor of the logistics hub in Ansfelden, explains what he likes about the instal-lation: “With FreeWeigh.Net® trouble-some quality control with handwritten

sheets is no longer necessary. Defects on the quality of supplied goods are now surveyed and documented online over a longer period. Before, imperfec-tions were just detected, goods were returned and no memo was added to the supplier’s file. Now, we have outstanding statistics available and the possibility of generating reports according to our needs. Due to the connectivity to our Oracle database and the mobile setup, master data mainte-nance and controlling of samples has become simple and fast. The excellent customer service and project manage-ment of the METTLER TOLEDO Austria system specialist enabled a smooth system installation.”

duct

Currently 4 versions of the 12.1’’-HMI-Box are available. But in the past we received more and more inquiries for a HMI-Box with a bigger display and higher resolution.

Not only the increasing market of pro-cess automation, which more and more focuses on monitoring tasks, created the need for bigger and easy-to-read displays. Also the wish to use displays with higher resolutions in industrial environments and the demand to enable error-free and fatigue-free operation with big screens created the market for this 17’’-HMI-Box. The HMI-Box as the user-interface is one of the critical success factors regarding productivity and error-free operation in production. Therefore each component of the ID30 HMI-Box has been designed and produced according to the highest standards concerning functionality and quality.

The very luminous and high-contrast active 17’’-TFT-Display can be read easily at every time, even from extreme viewing angles and bigger distances. New is the high resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels (SXGA), which fulfils even highest requirements. The display area size is 340 x 270 mm (17’’).

The clear layout of the foil-keyboard and the built-in TouchScreen provide an easy and comfortable operation. For easy cleaning and reliable functional-ity, the foil-keyboard is made of a very durable and scratch-resistant polyester foil with a smooth surface. To avoid operating errors, the pressure-point keys are embossed and clearly arranged on the keyboard. The stainless steel housing with IP69k protection provides highest reliability in function and operation even in harsh industrial environments. The robust construction and the GMP-certi-fied design of this HMI-Box allow easy and efficient cleaning, making it par-ticularly suitable for use in pharma-ceutical and food industry. With a table stand as standard, the ID30-worksta-tion can be arranged as ergonomically as possible and be adjusted vertically in 6 steps of 15° each. For wall mount purposes a new developed and stable wall swivelling head is available.

Another big advantage is that the 17’’-HMI-Box now can be connected not only to ID30 but easily to each Stan-dard-PC, even using the TouchScreen functionality. The HMI-Box comes with two integrated USB-interfaces as stan-dard and own power supply (100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz).

Abstract:• Big and luminous 17’’-display

with a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels (SXGA).

• The big display allows eye-friendly and fatigue-free

operation. • The robust housing made of

stainless steel provides IP69k protection and makes the HMI suitable for harsh industrial

environments.• The TouchScreen and the clearly

structured and resistant foil-key-board provide easy and error-free operation.

• With 2 built-in USB-interfaces external devices like a barcode scanner or an additional key-board can be connected easily.

• The own power supply of the 17’’-HMI-Box provides flexibility and together with the VGA-interface it enables the connectivity to any standard (industrial) PC.

What are they studying? The landslide model is being used to study the level of impact of climactic changes on the stability of hillslopes. In this study, scientists are particularly interested in the reaction of the capil-lary forces in the soil on the intensity

One of the more visible effects of cli-mate change in the recent past has been the high number of extreme weather incidents. A good example is the extraordinarily heavy rainfall over the last few years that has caused so many floods and landslides – includ-ing right here in Switzerland. The influence of climate on the stability of embankments is now being studied by the Technical University of Rapperswil

It can’t be denied anymore: Global climate change is a reality. Until recently, it seemed to be just another doomsday scenario promoted by crazy environmen-talists. But the alarming truth of global warming is now recognized by a variety of interest groups worldwide. And the recently published UNO Climate Report backs their views with historical facts.

and duration of precipitation, as well as previous rain events.

The groundwater flow within a hill-slope is considered to be another stability factor. The stratigraphical arrangement of the soil influences the groundwater flow through more or less permeable rock beds. Groundwater simulations were conducted to study this action more closely. Measurements

The landslide model is a 2.00 x 0.60 x 1.80m box made of steel and acrylic panels with a model hillslope. The rain unit installed in the cover can be operated with different intensities, while the groundwater is directed over clefts on the face of the wall and behind it. The slope of the model can also be set using an hydraulic cylinder.

of the pore pressures and the water content immediately before a landslide yield information about the fracture behavior of an embankment.

Scales and data transfer software from METTLER TOLEDOGroundwater and surface run-off is continuously recorded using METTLER TOLEDO scales. With the BalanceLink software, also from METTLER TOLEDO, these scale values are then directly transferred to a computer and simulta-neously filed in an Excel table.

Later in the study, piezometers will monitor the flow of the water table. Tensiometers will be used to measure the pore water pressure in the soil at several measuring points, and data log-gers will send the data to the computer. The water content will also be mea-sured using time domain reflectometry (TDR) and the data likewise transferred to the computer.

The goal of the research project is to make more precise predictions regarding future landslides. A key benefit will be the ability to warn the populations of high-risk areas earlier and more effectively.
