LCE-14 Bioenergy Market Uptake

• Market uptake of existing and emerging sustainable bioenergy

• Coordination and Support Actions (CSA)• TRL 7-9

• Similar nature of IEE projects (Intelligent Energy Europe): http://ec.europa.eu/energy/intelligent/

Page 8: INEA and the H2020 Low Carbon Energy projects on Bioenergy Emilio Font de Mora INEA - European Commission 24 September 2015, Brussels BioenNW final conference

LCE-14 Bioenergy Market Uptake

• Bioenergy4Business - Encourage owners of industrial heating plants in 11 European countries to switch from fossil fuels to biomass boilers that can use industrial waste, agricultural wastes and wood

• BioRES - Set up 6 to 8 new Biomass Trade and Logistic Centres (BTLC) in Bulgaria, Serbia and Slovenia

• BIOSURF - Strengthening cooperation between national biomethane registries, promoting free trade of biomethane, creating a methodology for CO2 certificates

• GreenGain – Biomass waste from landscape conservation and maintenance testing in two pilot regions (in Italy and Spain) from the logistics of collection to storage.

Bin2Grid – Turning unexploited food waste into biomethane supplied through local filling stations network (Jan. 2015- Dec. 2017)

• Main expected impacts:• - Establishment of 4 food waste separate collection systems

involving restaurants and municipal companies• - Stimulation of business agreements for supply chain development

• Budget: EUR 0.7 million• Coordinator: ZCH, Croatia Website: www.bin2grid.eu

Food waste valorisation to biomethane covering all the supply chain from waste collection to fuel distribution in Zagreb (HR), Skopje (MK), Malaga (ES) & Paris (FR)

SECURECHAIN – Securing future-proof environmentally compatible bioenergy chains (Apr. 2015 – Mar. 2018)

• Main expected impacts:• - Providing technical and financial advice to SMEs to set 15-25 bioenergy

supply chains • - 50 business proposals matching 15-20 potential investors per proposition• - At least 15-20 supply chains successfully started by the end of the

project• Budget: EUR 1.8 million• Coordinator: IIWH, Germany Website: www.securechain.eu

Promoting the implementation of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) practices in 6 EU regions to better integrate local SMEs into biomass supply, processing and bioenergy production

LCE-11 Next generation biofuels

• Developing next generation technologies for biofuels and sustainable alternative fuels

• Research and Innovation Actions (RIA)• TRL 3-4 to 4-5

• Similar nature of FP7 projects: http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp7/index_en.cfm

Page 12: INEA and the H2020 Low Carbon Energy projects on Bioenergy Emilio Font de Mora INEA - European Commission 24 September 2015, Brussels BioenNW final conference

LCE-11 Next generation biofuels

• ButaNext - Biobutanol production from wood residues and wastes. It will scrutinise the whole production chain, the fuel's performance in engines and the societal impacts related to waste minimisation, environmental emissions and job creation.

• Photofuel - Production of transport fuels created using microbial cells. These cells only require sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to live and excrete hydrocarbon and fuel compounds.

LCE-12 Demonstrating advanced biofuels

• Innovation Actions (IA)• TRL 5-6 to 6-7

• Similar nature of FP7 projects:• http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp7/index_en.cfm

LCE-12 Demonstrating advanced biofuels

• 2G BIOPIC - demonstrating the reliability and sustainability of producing bioethanol from agricultural residues and wood with greater yields, profitability and the ability to use different feedstocks.

• STEELANOL – CO from steel making into bioethanol by means of a microorganism. If successful and fully deployed throughout Europe this technology would produce 25 million tonnes of bioethanol (equivalent to 400,000 million vehicle km).
