Checking thebatteries

Turn power ON by sliding the powerswitch as shown.The battery check indicator will bedisplayed for 12 seconds.

When is displayed, batteries areOK.If flashes, batteries are low, havespares handy.If is displayed continuously,batteries should be replacedimmediately.*When the battery power is low, theflash will take longer to recharge.

*To turn OFF, slide the power switchagain.

Adjusting theviewfinder

A dioptric correction lever on theviewfinder eyepiece allows you toadjust the clarity of the viewfinderimage. This is especially helpful forphotographers who wear eyeglasses.

Open the back cover by sliding theback cover release toward the top ofthe camera.

Loading the film

This camera is designed touse DX-coded 35mm film.DX coding, used by virtuallyall major film manufacturers,allows the camera to identifyand set the film speedautomatically. If DX-codedfilm is unavailable, use ISO100 film.

Insert the film cartridge into thecamera. Always avoid direct sunlightwhen loading the film.

Make sure the film lies flat. Align the film leader with the redfilm loading indicator.Unless the film leader matches thefilm loading indicator, the film maynot be loaded.

*Do not touch the lens inside the bodywith your fingers or the film leader.

Close the back cover. The filmautomatically advances to the firstframe.

Set the power switch ON to makesure that the exposure counter shows"1".If film is improperly loaded, the LCDpanel will display a blinking "E". Inthis case, open the back cover, andrealign the film leader.

Use the window in the camera back tocheck type of film loaded.

Unloading thefilm

The camera automatically rewindsthe film when you reach the end of aroll. The exposure counter on the LCDpanel counts down as the film isrewinding.*The final reading of the exposure counterbefore rewinding may be more than thenumber of exposures specified for the film.

If you want to rewind the film beforethe end of the roll, press the rewindbutton with the tip of a ballpoint pen.Do not use any device with a sharptip.

Once the film has been rewound, ablinking "E" will be displayed on theLCD panel. Further operations are notpossible until the rewound filmcartridge is removed.

Open the back cover, and removethe film cartridge from the camera.Avoid direct sunlight when removingthe film.

When the power switch is ON,the LCD panel lights.The LCD panel goes out after 4 to5 minutes to minimize batterydrain. After 4 hours the power isautomatically turned OFF. Toresume operation, set the powerswitch OFF and then ON again.

How to takepictures

Set the power switch ON.* When the camera is not in use,always set the power switch OFF sothat the shutter cannot be activatedaccidentally.

While looking through theviewfinder, aim the camera at yoursubject.

Use the zoom buttons to adjust thesize of your subject in the frame.(telephoto or wide-angle)The shutter release cannot be operatedwhile zooming.

Press the "T" (Telephoto) button tozoom in. (The maximum focal lengthin the "T" position is 90mm.)Press the "W" (Wide-angle) button tozoom out. (The minimum focal lengthin the "W" position is 38mm).

Hold the camera correctly.It is particularly important to hold thecamera steady when shooting at alonger focal length; use both hands formaximum stability.

*Keep your fingers and the strap awayfrom the lens, flash, autofocuswindows and light sensor.

Position your subject within theautofocus frame in the viewfinder.With the composition shown on theright, the background will be in focusas the autofocus frame does not coverthe subject. In this case, use the focuslock to keep the subject in focus. (Referto page 24.)

Press the shutter release buttonhalfway to focus.When correct focus has beenachieved, the "AF" indicator (green)will light up in the viewfinder.

If the "AF" indicator is blinking,correct focus has not been achieved. Ifthis occurs, let go of the shutter releasebutton. Make sure your subject iswithin the autofocus frame in theviewfinder and press the shutter releasebutton halfway again.

The entire subject should normally bepositioned within the picture frame,however, the actual available imagearea will become smaller as you getnearer to the subject. At 0.6m (2ft),the subject should be positionedwithin the close-up correction marks.

If the subject is nearer than 0.6m (2ft),the "AF" indicator (green) will blinkand the shutter will not release.However, the shutter may sometimesbe released erroneously when thesubject is extremely close to thecamera.

Shooting range: from 0.6m (2ft) to(infinity).At 0.4m (1.3ft) you can take pictureswith super macro mode.(Refer to page 30.)

When correct focus has beenachieved (the "AF" indicator has litup), press the shutter release buttonfully (gently, to minimize camerashake).

Auto flashphotography(1)Taking pictures

in low light

When the flash mode is set toAUTO or AUTO-S, the flashwill fire automatically in lowlight conditions.

As soon as the shutter is released,the film will automatically advance tothe next frame. The LCD exposurecounter shows the next frame number.

Confirm flash charge by pressing theshutter release button halfway. Theindicator (orange) will light up in theviewfinder when the flash is charged.Compose your shot and press theshutter release button. The flash willfire automatically.

The shutter release cannot be operated whilethe flash is charging.It takes about 0.2—3.5 seconds after the filmis advanced to recharge the flash (at normaltemperatures with new batteries).NOTE: To significantly reduce red-eyephenomenon, use the AUTO-S flash mode(P.40).

From 0.6m(2ft) to l.6m(5.2ft), theflash strength is controlledautomatically as shown. This soft flashmechanism prevents pictures frombeing overexposed.

Position your subject in theautofocus frame and press the shutterrelease button halfway. The "AF"indicator (green) will light up in theviewfinder and the focus will belocked.*When focus is locked, exposuresettings are also locked (AE lock).

Recompose your picture whilekeeping the shutter release buttonpressed halfway.*If you remove your finger from the

shutter release button, the "AF"indicator (green) will disappear andthe focus lock will be canceled.

Remote control

Use the remote control unit totake pictures when operatingat a distance from the camera.

Using a coin, turn the screw toremove the remote control unit fromthe bottom of the camera.

When the remote control unit has beenremoved from the camera, blinkson the LCD panel.

The camera should be set firmly inposition (with a tripod for example).While looking through the viewfinder,aim the camera at the subject.

With the remote control unit inyour hand, position yourself in frontof the camera and press the releasebutton on the unit's side.*The remote control unit functions atdistances up to 5m (16.4ft) from thecamera within an arc of about 30°(3.5m (11.5ft) to the right or left of

the center of the frame).Outside of this range use theselftimer.

*Strong backlighting through theviewfinder may interfere with remotecontrol operation.

After using the remote control unit,replace it and lock it in place with acoin.

NOTE:•The remote control unit will operate

for approximately 18 minutes afterremoving it from the camera. Outsideof this period the remote control unitcannot be operated. To resumeoperation, replace and then removethe remote control unit.

• Although all operating modes can beused in conjunction with the remotecontrol unit, continuous-frameadvance is limited to two frames.

•The battery of the remote controllasts approx. eight years.In case of battery drain, contactyour local distributors.

Super macro photography ispossible at a distance of 0.4m(1.3ft).Note: Without performingany special operations, macrophotography is possible atany focal length up to adistance of 0.6m (2ft).

Measure the distance of 0.4m (1.3ft)with the green mark on the strap.*0utside of 0.4m (1.3ft) the shutterwill release, even though correctfocus has not been achieved.

*In this mode, the "AF" indicator(green) will not light up in theviewfinder.

At 0.4m (1.3ft), position your subjectwithin the area outlined by the close-up correction marks.The shaded area is the area that willactually be taken.

*In this mode, none of the flash or subjectmodes can be used.

*After releasing the shutter, the super macromode will be automatically canceled.

*To return to the normal shooting modebefore releasing the shutter, press the supermacro button or the zoom button.

Spot mode

When there is strong backlight, yoursubject will appear too dark.

By using the spot mode, your subjectwill be properly exposed.

Use the spot mode when youwant to limit light metering toa particular area of thecomposition. In this mode,your subject will be properlyexposed without beingaffected by backlight.

AUTO-S flashphotography

AUTO-S flash significantlyreduces "red-eye"phenomenon (when asubject's eyes appear red) inflash portraits and groupphotos. Red-eye phenomenonis most likely to occur in verylow light, and at longer focallengths (telephoto).

Press the FLASH button to set themode to AUTO-S.Compose your shot and press theshutter release button. The flash willemit a rapid series of low power pre-flashes, followed directly by the mainflash.

*Hold the camera firmly whilepressing the shutter release button.

*AUTO-S mode will not be canceledwhen power is switched OFF.To cancel AUTO-S mode, press theFLASH button.

*In low light conditions, the necessaryshutter speed may be very slow (upto 2 seconds) to attain properexposure. To prevent blurred picturesresulting from camera shake, thecamera should be set firmly inposition (with a tripod for example).

In this mode, the flash always firesregardless of available light. Use thismode for daylight shooting in backlitconditions to compensate forbacklighting which may make thesubject appear too dark.FILL-IN flash

necessary shutter speed may be very slow(up to 2 seconds) to attain properexposure. To prevent blurred picturesresulting from camera shake, the camerashould be set firmly in position (with atripod for example).

In the flash AUTO mode, only themain subject will be properly exposed.

By using the night scene flash mode,both the subject in the foreground andthe night scene in the background willbe properly exposed.

When the Softon is used.

Olympus offers the following optionalfilters.(Filter diameter: 35.5mm)(1) SkylightPrevents a blue tone in colorphotographs taken on fair weatherdays and provides an overall morenatural color tone.(2) SoftonUse this for portraits; it softens theimage for more "moody" pictures.(3) Sunny CrossThe photograph will have rays of lightaround bright objects.

How to use thesoft case(optional)

Make sure to set the power switchOFF before the camera is inserted intothe case.

The camera's neck strap can be usedto carry the camera after the camera isproperly inserted into the soft case.

The soft case can also be carried ona belt using the belt loop on the backof the case.

Care and storage

Never disassemble the camera; itcontains a high-voltage circuit.

Do not use thinner, benzine ororganic solvents to clean the camera.

Do not touch the DX read-offcontacts. Do not disassemble orexpose batteries to excessive heat.

Do not rotate the camera once it ismounted on a tripod. Use the tripodswivel to vary direction. Do not openthe back cover while it is mounted ona tripod.

Questions and answers

Q: What kind of batteries should I use?A: Use two 3V lithium batteries (DL123A or CR123A). Do not

mix new and old batteries at the same time. Change them bothat the same time.

Q: How long will the battery last?A: If you use 24-exposure rolls of film and expose half of all

your pictures with flash, two new 3V lithium batteries(DL123A/CR123A) will allow you to take 30 or more rolls offilm. If you do not use flash and zoom so often, the batterieswill last much longer.

Q: The camera does not operate. What should I do?A: (1)Make sure the power switch is ON. (2)Make sure there are

batteries in the camera, and that they are inserted correctly.(Refer to page 6.) (3)If the film has been rewound, the camerawill not operate until the back cover is opened. (4)While theflash is being charged, the shutter will not release. (5)If the

distance range to the subject is less than 0.6m in normalshooting mode, the shutter will not release.

Q: The camera does not focus correctly. What should I do?A: In the following situations, the camera's autofocus

mechanism may not function properly. Compose your pictureby focusing on a different subject which is in the same rangeas your subject. (Refer to page 24.)

Q: The camera fails to operate in cold weather. What can Ido?

A: Generally, low temperatures will reduce the batteryperformance temporarily. Try to keep the camera warm beforeusing them.

Q: The remote control does not operate.A: Due to the noise produced by specific types of fluorescent

lighting (fluorescent lights without glow lamp), it may not bepossible to use the remote control unit. In such cases, use theselftimer.
