Assessment plays a key role in helping schools to
improve outcomes.
Knowing how each pupil is performing allows
teachers to help individuals improve.
This in turn promotes improvement at class level,
then at school level, allowing us to set meaningful
and challenging targets in our School
Development Plan.

Children making progress
Progress is only officially measured by the
DfE from the end of KS1 onwards, as there is
no comparable measure for pupils at the end
of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
...the DfE does have a floor target for the
end of KS1, and this is a secure level 2
During KS2, pupils are expected to make at
least two levels' progress, with the majority
achieving at least a level 4

What can parents do?
Share your ideas about the importance of educationwith your child
Be careful not to pass on negative attitudes about
school that may be a part of your own past experience.
A positive attitude about school is perhaps the most
important gift you can give your child.
Help your child set education goals, both short term
and long term.
Talk to your child about what they are learning at
school.
Help your child get organised to do homework.
Communicate with your childs teacher about progress,
achievements and concerns

Final Point
Assessment is not meant to be used as a
measure of your childs ability at school
but as a means to improve their ability tolearn; their knowledge and their skills.
Much of what is learnt is never fully
assessed but used every bit as much.
