Here are some practical tips for parents or caregivers:Go out with your child
»to the roadside near your home and help your child understand the basic road safety rules and practise their developing skills.
Crouch down to your child’s height and look at
»what your child can actually see or hear at the
roadside from their perspective. Be aware that
children can’t always judge traffi c and are easily
distracted. Praise good road safe behaviour in your children.

If you can, off er to be an adult helper for road
»safety lessons and practical sessions at school.Tell young children to always hold the hand of
»a responsible older person when walking near
traffi c – the older person needs to walk closest
to the traffi c.Act as a positive role model as a pedestrian,
»passenger and rider, and never sacrifi ce safety
for convenience.

Walking with your children can be
lots of fun and helping them learn
about roads and traffi c will make
them safer.
Here are some things you
can work through with
your children. They should
understand:
what to do in situations when
»unexpected things happen,
such as if a ball goes out onto
the road
the need to take care in areas
»such as car parks, school
drop-off /pick-up points or
busy shopping areas where
there is lots of traffi c
that driveways can be
»dangerous as drivers may
not see pedestrians or riders,
and where vehicles may be
hidden from view
the importance of using
»supervised or controlled
crossing points such as
pedestrian crossings, school
patrols and traffi c lights
whenever possible
to walk on the house side of
»the pavement away from any
traffi c
how to walk safely on roads
»where there are no footpaths
share the footpath with
»others, including pedestrians,
skaters, scooters, wheelchairs
and mobility scooters.
The kerb drillAlways use and show your child you understand the kerb drill to cross the
road:Stop one step back from the kerb.
»Look and listen for traffi c coming from all
»
directions.If there is traffi c coming, wait until it has
»passed and then look and listen for traffi c
again.If there is no traffi c coming, walk quickly
»
straight across the road.While crossing, look and listen for traffi c
»
wherever it may come from.
