SERVICES

This is the official and appropriate repository for Edinburgh’s archival heritage and as part of a Local Authority the staff have a duty to respond to all enquiries, and offer advice free of charge to any archival matters. Enquiries can be answered, source materials identified.

It would be expected that Local History enquiries would have a full knowledge of secondary sources (as available in the Edinburgh Room of the Council’s Central Library, George IV Bridge) before approaching the Archive. All usage is at the discretion of professional archivists. A copy of the Search Room Regulations and Public Access document is available on request.

The collection covers a wide range of topics in history and Scottish history of all periods, with the emphasis on the history of Edinburgh. Aspects covered include administrative, judicial, political, criminal, domestic, personal, public, cultural, religious, social, commercial, and legal history with a special focus on the written heritage of the City of Edinburgh.

PUBLICATIONS

Primary source materials in the form of archivally significant records – largely documents – can be produced. These include minutes, reports, correspondence, ledgers, deeds, charters, court proceedings, building plans, registers, manuscripts, petitions, and files, and there are lists and catalogues.

TRAINING FACILITIES A small room (max 12) available for meetings on Fridays only.
