SCOPE

This manual contains the necessary information forsafe and efficient operation of the aircraft. Theseinstructions provide a general knowledge of theaircraft and its characteristics and specific normaland emergency operating procedures. Pilot experience is recognized; therefore, basic flight principlesare avoided. Instructions in this manual are preparedto be understandable to the least experienced pilotwho can be expected to operate the aircraft. Thismanual provides the best possible operating instructions under most conditions. Multiple emergencies,adverse weather, terrain, etc., may require modification of the procedures. This manual must be usedwith one or more of the following manuals to obtaininformation necessary for safe and efficient operation:

The flight manual takes a positive approach andnormally states only what can be done. Unusualoperations or configurations are prohibited unlessspecifically covered herein. Clearance must beobtained before any questionable operation which isnot specifically permitted in this manual isattempted.

HOW TO BE ASSURED OF HAVING LATEST DATA

Refer to T.O. GR0171 for a listing of all current flightmanuals, safety supplements, operational supplements, and checklists. Also, check the flight manualtitle page, the title block of each safety andoperational supplement, and all status pagescontained in the flight manual or attached to formalsafety and operational supplements. Clear alldiscrepancies before flight.

ARRANGEMENT

The manual is divided into eight sections and threesupplemental appendices.

ILLUSTRATIONS

Cockpit arrangement, cockpit console, and cockpitinstrument panel illustrations display the deliveredconfiguration plus the approved equipment modifications. For details of equipment modification, see theindividual equipment illustration.

SUPPLEMENT INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

Supplements are safety or operational and areindicated 1SS or 1S, respectively. Supplements areissued as interim electronic messages or formalprinted copies. All interim supplements are assignedodd numbers, such as 1SS195. When an interimsupplement is formalized, it is assigned the nextfollowing even number, such as 1SS196. Formalsupplements not preceded by an interim supplementare also assigned even numbers. If an interimsupplement is not to be formalized, a statementcancelling the next assigned even supplementnumber is included in the REMARKS section of theinterim supplement. If a formal supplement is notpreceded by an interim supplement, a statementcancelling the previous odd supplement number isincluded on the status page of the formal supplement.Occasionally, a supplement has dual references in theinstructions; this is because the supplement appliesto the present and subsequent manual. Minortext/illustration changes or deletions are given asinstructions in the supplement. When lengthyadditions are required, the formal supplementprovides onesided insert page(s) to the flight manualand checklist. This supplement page(s) is attached tothe original page(s). The original page(s) remains inthe manual or checklist in case the supplement isrescinded and the page(s) is needed. Added page(s)(e.g., 348.1) are inserted in proper numericalsequence and may be printed on both sides.

SAFETY SUPPLEMENTS

Information involving safety is promptly forwardedin a safety supplement. Urgent information ispublished in interim safety supplements andtransmitted by electronic message. Formal supplements are mailed. The supplement title block andstatus page (published with formal supplementsonly) should be checked to determine the effect of thesupplement on this manual and other outstandingsupplements.

OPERATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Information involving changes to operating procedures is forwarded by operational supplements. Theprocedure for handling operational supplements isthe same as for safety supplements.

CHECKLIST

The checklist contains itemized procedures withoutall of the amplification. Primary line items in theflight manual and checklist are identical.

HOW TO GET PERSONAL COPIES

Each pilot is entitled to a personal copy of the flightmanual, safety supplements, operational supplements, and a checklist. The required quantitiesshould be ordered before needed to assure theirtimely receipt. Check with the publication distribution officer whose job is to fulfill T.O. requests.Country manuals and difference data are assigned aCountry Standard T.O. (CSTO) number and indexedin the Security Assistance Program T.O. Index, T.O.GR0171. Updates, stock, store, and issue of CSTO'sare a contractor supported function. Insure a systemis established at each base to deliver the publicationsto the pilots immediately upon receipt.

FLIGHT MANUAL BINDERS

Looseleaf binders and sectionalized tabs are available for use with the manual. They are obtainedthrough local purchase procedures and are listed inthe USAF supply channels and may be ordered on thesupply case through AFLC. Check with supplypersonnel for assistance in procuring these items.

CHANGE SYMBOL

The change symbol, as illustrated by the black line inthe margin of this paragraph, indicates changesmade to the current issue.

THE AIRCRAFT

The F16C is a singleengine, singleseat, multiroletactical fighter with full airtoair and airtosurfacecombat capabilities. The F16D is a twoseat(tandem) version and performs the secondary role ofa trainer. The fuselage is characterized by a largebubble canopy, forebody strakes, and an underfuselage engine air inlet. The wing and tail surfaces arethin and feature moderate aft sweep. The wing hasautomatic leading edge flaps which enhanceperformance over a wide speed range. Flaperons aremounted on the trailing edge of the wing andcombine the functions of flaps and ailerons. Thehorizontal tails have a small negative dihedral andprovide pitch and roll control through symmetrical/differential deflection. The vertical tail, augmentedby twin ventral fins, provides directional stability.All flight control surfaces are actuated hydraulicallyby two independent hydraulic systems and aredirected by signals through a flybywire system.

The fire control system includes a fire control radarwith search and tracking capability; two multifunction displays (MFD's) for presentation of navigation,radar, weapons, and other information; and aheadup display (HUD). Upfront controls provide acentral control point for fire control, communications, navigation, and IFF functions. A storesmanagement system (SMS) presents a visualdisplay on a selected MFD for inventory, control, andrelease of all stores. Basic armament includes afuselagemounted multibarrel 20 mm gun and anairtoair missile on each wingtip. Additional storesof various types can be carried on pylons mountedunder the wings and on the fuselage.

C The GW of the aircraft including pilot, oil, two tipAIM120 missiles, and a full load of 20 mmammunition is approximately 21,000 pounds andwith full internal JP8 fuel 28,200 pounds.

PX II D The GW of the aircraft including pilot, oil,two tip AIM120 missiles, and a full load of 20 mmammunition is approximately 21,600 pounds andwith full internal JP8 fuel 27,500 pounds.

PX III D The GW of the aircraft including pilot, oil,two tip AIM120 missiles, and a full load of 20 mmammunition is approximately 21,900 pounds andwith full internal JP8 fuel 27,800 pounds.

PX III CFT's add approximately 900 pounds whenempty and hold approximately 3000 pounds of JP8fuel.

These GW's are approximate and shall not be used forcomputing aircraft performance. For maximum GWlimitations, refer to Section V, OPERATING LIMITATIONS. For detailed information, refer to T.O.GR1F16CJ11, Part I.

COCKPIT ARRANGEMENT

Refer to figure 13. The cockpit is conventional exceptfor the seat, which is reclined 30 degrees, and thestick, which is mounted on the right console. Thecockpit contains no circuit breakers.
