    Information X-Games II

    Because Library Research IS an Action Sport,

    and its time to play.

    So get out your equipment, loosen up the shoulders, crack the knuckles,grab some snacks (research burns calories!), and get ready to dive deep.

    To prepare for your LD year, we have two 21 st Century Xtreme Librarychallenges for you as part of this summers Information X-Games II:

    CHALLENGE 1:Mapping the Information TerrainCountries & Inhabitants

    and

    CHALLENGE 2:Mapping the Information TerrainTopography

    In each of these challenges, points are awarded for tasks completed, with atotal of 100 points (not including bonuses) possible between the two. Andthere are prizes . . .

    Well be awarding 3 medals (even better than last years) for the topXtreme Researchers, and must-have certificates to anyone scoring 85% orhigher on points.

    But yall are also a team, so were planning a wicked special prize if theteam average is above 85%.

    Challenge 1: Mapping the Information LandscapeCountries & Inhabitants

    In completing the activities below, you will be exploring the larger context of knowledgeorganization and information dissemination in which your LD and dissertation takeplace. Youll also be identifying opportunities for participation and connection within yourscholarly and professional communities.

    By 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, June 17, upload a document with your answers to the InfoX-Games II: Challenge 1 folder in the Sakai Resources area. Be ready to talk aboutchallenges you encountered and what you learned during the process in class, onTuesday, June 21.

    THE COUNTRIES (Disciplines)1. Identify 4 of the disciplines, subdisciplines, fields, and/or schools of thought most

    connected or relevant to your LD focus/areas. These are the countries on your map;the disciplines have different cultures, languages, and topographies which will affectyour search strategies in finding information. Briefly describe the culture, etc. of eachdiscipline youve identified and how your search strategies might be impacted fromdiscipline to discipline. (20 pts)

    THE INHABITANTS (Scholarly Networks)2. For each discipline, subdiscipline, etc., identify and list: (7.5 pts)

    a. professional societies/organizationsb. conferencesc. listservsd. blogs

    BONUS: Subscribe to one or more new (for you) listservs in your area(s) of interest.(5 pts)

    BONUS BONUS: Subscribe to one or more new (for you) blogs in your area(s) ofinterest. (5 pts)

    3. For your topic/LD focus, identify and list: (7.5 pts)

    a. Faculty/scholars/experts (including their affiliations) working in this area; brieflydescribe how their research relates to your interests.b. Agencies (NGO, governmental, etc.) engaged in this area; briefly describe the

    work they do that is relevant to your topic.

    4. Describe in detail your process for identifying/finding information for 2 and 3 above.(5 pts)

    Challenge 2: Mapping the Information LandscapeTopography

    In this round of the Info X-Games, youll examine and analyze myriad dissemination andaccess points for information relevant to your LD.

    This challenge is due at 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, June 17. Upload a document with theinformation below into the Info X-Games II: Challenge 2 folder in the Resources area ofthe Sakai course site.

    CADASTRAL SURVEY

    1. Identify and provide citations for 5 books relevant to your LD. For each book, alsolist: (10 pts)

    a. the Library of Congress Subject Headings assigned to the titleb. the Library of Congress Classification (call number) and what class and subclass

    the numbers cover

    2. Describe how you could use LCSH and LCC to find other books on your topic/LDfocus. (5 pts)

    3. Find and provide a citation for a book review of one of the books. Describe theprocess you used to find the review. (5 pts)

    Feature Separation

    4. For each discipline, subdiscipline, etc., list all of the databases accessible throughthe AUNE Library (including OhioLINK databases) that would be most likely toinclude information about your topic/LD focus. For each database, state why youthink it would be appropriate. (5 pts)

    5. Begin compiling a keyword list for your topic. In the database that you have found tobe most productive for your area of research, identify subject headings in thedatabase that correspond with the keywords. List the keywords and subject headings.Compare 2 searches of keywords versus subject headings; describe the differences inthe results. (Note: Dont use the Electronic Journal Center (EJC) for this.) (5 pts)

    Contour Intervals 6. Choose a journal that is important for your topic. Scan the prior 10 years of table ofcontents (and article abstracts if needed) of the journal. Describe patterns you see inthe research and/or how the research topics have changed over time. (10 pts)

    BONUS: Analyze the journal contents back to its first issue. (25 pts)

    Coordinates 7. Find and provide a citation for a review article on your topic/LD focus area. (5 pts)

    a. Describe the process you used to find the article.b. Do a cited by/cited reference search on this article in both Google Scholar and

    the Citation Indexes. How many times has the article been cited according toGoogle Scholar? How many times according to the Citation Indexes? What mightexplain the difference in the numbers? What, if anything, can you conclude fromthe number of times the article was cited, where it was cited, and by whom?

    BONUS: Give a Google Scholar (or Google) Ninja Tip to increase the productivityand search skills of your cohort. (5 pts)

    Overedge 8. Find and provide citations for 3 examples of gray literature on your topic. Describe

    the process you used to locate the items. (5 pts)

    9. Find and provide citations for 3 articles, book chapters, or gray lit, that use differentmethodologies in addressing your topic. Briefly describe the methodologies used.(10 pts)
