Positioned for the Future

What Matters to You? We know philanthropy is a very personal choice. You have unique interests, goals, and timelines.

The Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties is an extraordinary platform for your charitable vision. We make charitable giving easy, effective, personalized, and permanent. That’s why we exist. We are here during times of great need. We are here to support new possibilities.

Together with your vision and our mission, we are positioned for the future.

Since our founding in 1999, we have worked with local donors to distribute more than $3 million — each grant guided by the vision and values of our donors. Many of those gifts “passed through” the Community Foundation, providing immediate impact, today. An equal number of those personalized gifts are invested for tomorrow as we build local endowments — permanent sources of funding for our community shaped by your legacy, year after year after year. We Are a Community of Grantmakers. See more about our recent grants on pages 10-11.

A thriving, healthy community is a connected community. We don’t do our work alone, but in partnership with local government, businesses, civic clubs, charities, and caring donors. We Invest in Partnerships. See a list of our remarkable supporters on pages 14-28.

The Community Foundation is a pro-active leader here in our backyard. From increasing resources available to local charities, to empowering leadership skills in local teens, to convening stakeholders addressing local problems, our role is to serve, support, and help solve. We Promote Leadership. Learn more about our work on pages 12-13.

Joining in community philanthropy through the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties is rewarding and worthwhile. You can see it change lives, today, tomorrow, and into the future. Thank you for your remarkable part in our work.

Positioned for the Future

You choose from a variety of fund instruments to match your grantmaking vision. By creating a fund in your Community Foundation, you can take advantage of all we have to offer:

Your Vision. Your Fund. Your Legacy.

To begin, you invest in the causes that matter most to you and the Community Foundation ensures your charitable investment is easy and economical.

You benefit from prudent fund management and the generous tax advantages associated with giving through a Community Foundation.

And finally, you’ll enjoy working with a committed staff with a deep knowledge of the community and the charities in our area.

We handle administrative functions, evaluate charities, and stay in tune with the changing community to support you and help you achieve your charitable vision. Here are the basic steps for creating a fund.

1.

2.

3.

Define your charitable and financial objectives.

Choose a name for your fund.

Determine which asset you will use in creating your fund.

Consider the type of fund that matches your charitable interests. Our staff will help you identify what type of fund fits your vision! But, it helps to understand how broad and flexible we can be as a giving vehicle with our array of donor crafted funds.

1

4

Consider how you want your gift to be used, whether you want future family members involved, and how much involvement you personally want in making grant recommendations.

Many donors choose a family name, but you can use any name that is meaningful to you.

Gifts of cash, securities (publicly traded or closely held) or real estate can be accepted by the Community Foundation to set up a fund. Assets with a low-cost basis are often wise choices, since they offer maximum tax advantages: You pay no capital gains tax and receive a favorable income-tax deduction. You may also wish to review assets inside your retirement plan for possible charitable use. If you wish, we work closely with your accountant and attorney to ensure your charitable wishes are clearly understood and applied.

Acorn Fund. We consider a fund fully “endowed” once it reaches $10,000 ($25,000 for a scholarship fund). However, many of our philanthropists start a new fund by creating an Acorn Fund, building to the endowed level over a five-year period. An initial gift of $2,000 or more is necessary to “seed” any of the funds, below. And, many of our Acorn Funds build endowment while also doing immediate grantmaking.

General Fund. A gift to establish a General Fund helps meet the changing needs of your community, now and in the future. General Funds broadly support the wellbeing and vitality of the region and its residents and are distributed to qualified charities seeking support through the Community Foundation’s responsive grantmaking programs. When you establish a General Fund, you leave decisions about the use of your gift to the Community Foundation, trusting the Community Foundation’s knowledge and reach within the community to determine what needs are most pressing.

4

Page 7: Infographic - Community Foundation · community to support you and help you achieve your charitable vision. Here are the basic steps for creating a fund. 1. 2. 3. Define your charitable

Positioned for the Future

Giving Circle Fund. Many of our Funds are created by a collective vision of multiple donors, each who tithe into a “giving circle” and then, together, make grant recommendations. Giving Circles are a fantastic way to learn more about your local community and its charities, and increase impact as each grant is amplified in size.

From here on, your charitable vision is nearly worry-free. The Community Foundation takes care of government filings, grant paperwork, auditing and accounting. Most importantly, you will have joined with others who have created a personal legacy that is true philanthropy.

To get started, contact Executive Director Amy Owen at (703) 779-3505 or (540) 687-5223 or via email at [email protected]

Transferring a Private Foundation or Trust Fund. A private foundation can be a great vehicle for charitable giving, but sometimes the process of managing the foundation’s legal affairs can diminish the joy of giving or become a burden to maintain. Existing private foundations or charitable trust funds can be easily rolled over to a named endow-ment fund within the Community Foundation, greatly reducing administrative overhead, while maintaining key elements of donor involvement and long-term, legacy vision. The disadvantages of private foundations or trusts—excise fees, administrative fees, lesser tax benefits, and due diligence administration—cause many to seek a more flexible alternative in the Community Foundation.

Donor Advised Fund. A Donor Advised Fund allows you to enjoy ongoing, day-to-day involvement in the distribution of your gifts from your fund. You bring specific grant recommendations to the Community Foundation for consideration. Donor Advised Funds closely mirror private family foundations, with significant advantages. Learn more on pages 6-7.

5 6

Field of Interest Fund. This type of fund allows you to target an issue of need rather than a specific charity. The Community Foundation will make grants to those organizations most effectively serving the people and causes you want to help—the elderly, or hunger, or arts and cultural organizations, or education, or environment, for example. You define the “area of interest” and the Community Foundation takes it from there.

Corporate Advised Funds. Corporations are often overwhelmed with requests for charitable gifts. Many corporations across America look to their local Community Foundation for a simplified, focused giving program, administered by Community Foundation staff. A corporation can establish a corporate advised fund applying personalized guidelines for grant making. Or, it may elect to give the Community Foundation full discretion over disbursements.

Designated Fund. You may name a specific charity to benefit from your gift, or, numerous specific charities to receive an annual grant. Should a designated organization cease to exist, the Community Foundation has the responsibility and authority to reallocate grants to another agency that most closely reflects your original vision.

Agency Fund. Charities often wish to create long-term endowments that will benefit their mission and purpose. The Community Foundation provides an excellent vehicle to ensure endowment gifts are carefully and diversely invested and managed.

Scholarship Fund. You may choose to dedicate a fund’s purpose entirely to helping students study and advance their education. The Community Foundation works with community volunteers to interview students and make award recommendations, or, can work with you to form your own selection committee.

Make your gift to the Community Foundation. While your gifts to establish a fund will be commingled with other Community Foundation assets for maximal investment benefits, income and appreciation are specifically tracked and tied to your fund, benefitting your fund for its growth and charitable grantmaking.

Make a gift through your Will. Appropriate language to make sure your Will meets legal and tax criteria is available. Just ask!

OUR 2014 WORK

Supported by the S. Murray Rust and Mary H.C. Rust Student Philanthropy Project endowment fund, Forward Turn entrusts local high-school teens with the role as local grantmakers. Participants take part in learning how to write proposals, read proposals submitted by local groups, and interview their finalists seeking funding.

As a final report, Forward Turn Grantmakers sat with the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors to explain their grantmaking processes and to gain a first-hand understanding about the roles and responsibilities required as nonprofit board trustees.

We know we can help these young teens strengthen their knowledge and commitment to charity and philanthropy as they become adults. Programs like Forward Turn have been shown to more than quadruple volunteerism rates, double giving rates, and prepare our youth to be active community philanthropists.

Leadership Awards

Joining forces with the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce as part of its annual meeting celebration, the Community Foundation earmarks $1,000 each for four Leadership Awardees to name a charity of choice in honor of their philanthropic and volunteer work here at home.

Large Organization Awardee, Falcon’s Landing, recommended its grant to benefit the Loudoun County Senior Center at Cascades Advisory Committee. Young Professional Awardee, Melanie Schmidt with Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center, named the Tiger Lily Foundation. Theses honorees demonstrate an exemplary level of leadership and community engagement serving our local citizens.

Small Organization Awardee, The Wellness Connection, selected the Cormac Finn McCarty Foundation as its $1,000 grant beneficiary.

Executive Professional Awardee, Tom Toth Senior with Toth Advisory Services, named the Loudoun Chamber Foundation fund as beneficiary of his honorary $1,000 grant

Nonprofit AcademyTogether, the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties along with Loudoun Cares and the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce undertake a certificate-series and learning program designed just for the staff and volunteer leaders working with local nonprofit organizations. Workshops offered in 2014: “Strategic Planning—How to Get it Done How to Make it Work,” “Electronic Media Here We Come,” “Direct Mail, Not Junk Mail,” and “Navigating the Winds of Human Resources.”12

In 2014, the Community Foundation adopted policies and systems to enable scholarship funds. The Gavin Rupp “I Promise 15” Scholarship Fund is our advent into funding charitable education scholarships.

Gavin believed in paying it forward, and #15 was his baseball number. He inspired so many. His legacy continues today through his fund designed to help future medical staff with oncology education.

Have you heard of “crowdfunding?” It’s a form of online fundraising that thrives in the new era of social media and one of the fastest growing forms of new income for charities. In 2014, the Community Foundation coordinated a 24-hour online giving event just for the charities serving our footprint. Some 40 nonprofit organizations participated in GiveChoose, joined in our kick-off training program, and on May 6th, 2014, raised some $65,000 for their unique missions in this first-year program.

The GiveChoose program was supported by area businesses that created a “prize pool.” Those prizes inspired charities and their donor cadre to win hourly gifts that ranged from $500 to $1,500 throughout the 24-hour event.

In a rare form of community grantmaking, the Community Foundation worked with a small giving circle of donors to support local businesses and employment solutions in our footprint. The program pooled gifts from donors, who reviewed applications from start-up to mid-sized local businesses that met thresholds of economic need or that sought to hire unemployed minority and veterans within their businesses. In addition to funding, our panel of donors also offered mentoring services to our grantees, helping to shape their business plans, marketing systems, and day-to-day tactics for success. Awarding three grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, our donors found this a wonderful way to “pay it forward.”
