Information Technology資訊科技

Information Technology (IT) plays a significant role in supporting modern society. Of all the IT disciplines, “Computing and Data Science” and “Networking and Information Security” have flourished, even during lean times.

Programme Aims & FeaturesThis programme aims to train students to become professionals in the field of Information Technology. In view of the demand for both the practical and professional knowledge in IT application, the programme offers two themes of study:

• ComputingandDataScienceTheme

• NetworkingandInformationSecurityTheme

Career ProspectsGraduateswillbeabletopursueabroadrangeofpositionsinthe IT industry, including system analysts, programmers, data scientists, network engineers and security auditors.

Entrance RequirementsHong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE)

•Level2orabovein5subjects*(includingEnglishLanguageand Chinese Language#);

OR

Other Qualifications

•DiplomainFoundationStudies;or

• DiplomaYiJin;or

• Equivalent qualifications (e.g. HKALE, GCE A-level,InternationalA-level, IBDiploma,SAT)willbeconsideredby the College.

Applicants who do not possess the above academic qualifications but are aged 21 or above with relevant working experience will be considered on individual merit.

* Applicants are allowed to use notmore than twoApplied Learning (ApL)subjectsintheapplication.TherecognitionoftheApLsubjectsisasfollows:

• “AttainedwithDistinction(II)”isdeemedequivalenttoLevel4orabovein theHKDSEExamination;

After studying in HKU SPACE CC for two years, I found that although my DSE result was not good enough to apply for university,Iwasdefinitelynotafailure.IfailedmyHKDSEChinesesubjectsoIcontinuedmystudyinHKUSPACECC,whereIlearntmuchmoreknowledgeandpracticalskillsthanmyfriendswhowerestudyinginuniversity.Whentheywere learning mathematics which were not required in daily life or workplace, and were attending many courses that areunrelatedfromtheirmajors,Ihadalreadybuiltasolidfoundationintheknowledgeofcoding,database,system,networkingandsecurity.WhenIturnedonmylaptop,IfeltlikeIhadbecomeaprofessionalbecausesinceIcouldreally

apply what I learnt in the lectures. It gave me a sense that I was really learning something useful. If I passed the DSE and studied in university, Imightstillbestudyingtheoriesandmathematicsandcoulddonothinginfrontofacomputer.Withoutpracticalskills,Iwouldbeabsolutelyworried about my career. Studying in HKU SPACE CC was really a turning point in my life. Apart from this, most universities tend to require studentstostudyengineeringforoneyearbeforechoosingthemajors,whichmeanswehavetospendoneyearlearningsomethingunrelatedtoourmajors,evenifwearenotgoodatorinterestatthem.Ifwecannotachievehighmarksinthosecourses,wewillnotbeabletochoosethedesiredmajorsinyear2.Instead,HKUSPACECCoffershigherdiplomaprogrammeswhichwecandirectlychooseourpreferredsubjects.Forexample,IplantoworkintheITfieldandsoIappliedfortheHigherDiplomainInformationTechnologyprogramme.WhatIlearntwereallrelatedtoIT.Afterfinishingtheprogramme,studentscancontinuestudiesatuniversityiftheyachieveagoodGPA.Inanotherwords,studentsdonothavetostudythat“risky”year1inuniversity.Instead,theycanchoosetostudyfor2yearsinHKUSPACECC.Youcanevenapplyforadmission to senior years at a university after completing a higher diploma programme. As competition in higher diploma programmes tends tobelower,itmaybeeasiertoachievegoodGPA.Lastbutnotleast,alllecturersImetwereexperiencedandwerewillingtohelpandsharewithustheirpreciousexperience,whichweredefinitelyhelpfultoourcareerplanning.Donothesitatetotalkwiththeteachersandenjoytheadvantage of studying in HKU SPACE CC!

Tsang Tsz Ching •HigherDiplomainInformationTechnology(NetworkingandInformationSecurityTheme,2016-2018)

I was once a person who did not have any goals and dreams. I even did not have any motivation in taking my HKDSE and of course, the result was quite disappointing. After receiving the HKDSE result, I struggled for a long time for which programmeIshouldchooseformyfurtherstudybecauseIdidn’tevenknowwhatmyinterestwas.Asthedeadlineforapplying programmes got closer and closer, I forced myself to make a decision which was to apply HDIT in HKU SPACE CC. This decision has changed my life and the way I think.

Justlikestartinganewjourney,IlearntmanynewtopicsduringmystudyinHDITatHKUSPACECC.Iwasgiventhechance to explore the knowledge about programming, network fundamentals, as well as information security which I found the most interesting. The courses not only taught us about the theory but also allowed us to practice our hands-on skills such as configuring physical appliances. This kind of teaching method made me easier to understand the concepts and grasp the techniques. Also, I gained valuable experience through participatinginthe2017CCNANetridersCompetition,whichbroadenedmyhorizonsandarousedmyinterestintheITsubjects.

Inadditiontoteachingustheknowledge,lecturersalsokeptagoodrelationshipwithus.Wecanapproachedthemforhelpeitherinpersonorvia email freely and they always replied us patiently with detailed explanations. During the lessons, they always shared their personal experience with us and encouraged us to proactively think about our next stage of development. Their kindness and fervour motivated me a lot.

ThankstoHKUSPACECC,Icannowfindmyinterest,setmygoalsandstriveforthemwithmotivation.Thistwo-yearjourneyatHKUSPACECC so far is the most valuable and unforgettable experience in my life.

Everyone has a dream of getting into tertiary education. Unfortunately, I failed in my HKDSE. I did not get into university. However, HKU SPACE CC provides me with a second chance.

During the two years, I have learned and gained a lot in Higher Diploma in Information Technology programme. In academic perspective, the programme offers a series of IT courses ranging from programming to networking. All of them are useful and meaningful. The course named Internet Programmingisagoodexample.Inthiscourse,welearnedhowtowriteawebsiteforearningmoney.Besides,wearerequiredtofinishprojectsallthetimeinHDIT.Projectscannotbedoneindividually.Ilearnhowtocooperatewithmyclassmates.Eachmembermusthavehisorherdutiesintheproject.Furthermore,lecturersalwayssharetheirpreciousexperienceswithus.Thesecanhelpmeinworkplace.

SomeoneaskmehowtogetahigherGPAinHKUSPACECC.Myansweris“effort”.Infact,itisoneofthefactorsonly.Therearemanywaysthatcan help you to succeed. Asking question is very essential in college study. Do not hesitate to ask questions if you have any difficulties in learning. Lecturers are always ready to give you a helpful hand. In addition, revision can improve your memory capacity. I highly recommend you write “chickennotes”.Writingnotecanletyouunderstanddeeplyinthelecturesaswellasrecallingthecontentstaughteasily.Lastly,themostimportant,isyourattitude.Attitudedetermineseverything.Ifyoureceiveanunsatisfactoryresultinexam,donotsay“thelecturersgaveabadgradeformeorchallengehim”.Trytoaskyourself“HowmucheffortdidIspend?”,“Didyoupreparewellfortheexam?”.

AlthoughthelifeinHKUSPACECCisstressful,itisvaluable.Aswealwayssay“thereisnofreelunchintheworld”.Youmustpayyoureffortinorderto enter university. Hopefully, you will be a university student in future.
