People with Down syndrome are therefore often defined by their language limitations rather than their language potential. In the task that I have developed individuals are shown short animation on a tablet, at the same time they hear a sentence and they must decide whether the sentence matches the animation. To date, I have completed the task with some children who don’t have any language difficulties to make sure it works effectively. I found that children performed better on my task than another task using a more traditional approach Why do I need your help? The task is now ready to be used with those who have Down syndrome, to see what they find easy and more difficult. It is hoped that the task will show the true My name is Pauline Frizelle and I am a researcher and Speech and Language Therapist working at University College Cork. I have been developing a new computerized task (using animation) to study people’s understanding of different types of sentences called complex sentences. Until recently, there has been no task available in the world that looks at a full range of complex sentences, in detail. As a result we have a very poor knowledge of what types of sentences those with language difficulties (in particular those with Down syndrome) can understand. INFORMATION FOR PARENT/CAREGIVER OF PARTICIPANTS WITH DOWN SYNDROME The people being invited: § Have a diagnosis of Down syndrome § Have the ability to understand simple sentences § Can speak in 3 word combinations § Have English as a first language and the language of the home Dr Pauline Frizelle, Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, University College Cork Tel: +252 (21) 4901649 mail: [email protected] Investigating the understanding of complex sentences by those with Down syndrome, intellectual disability of unknown origin and typical development Confidentiality A code number would identify each participant. . All data will be anonymous We would not write names on any forms. All forms would be stored in a locked filing cabinet in the department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, University College Cork. The final scores will be deposited on the open science framework for statistical re analysis. language potential of individuals with Down syndrome and therefore help teachers and therapists maximise their learning ability.
