At the heart of the UK, Hull is surrounded by thebeauty of the East Riding of Yorkshire to the northand, across the Humber Bridge, North Lincolnshireto the south.The East Riding is a region of openplains, rolling hills and rugged coastline. Its ancient

SCARBOROUGH40 miles north of Hull, Scarborough, is one ofEngland's premier seaside resorts, boasting 2 miles ofspectacular coastline and 2000 years of history.Indeed, Scarborough's rich and varied heritage is stillmuch in evidence, including it medieval castle,fabulous sandy beaches, and extensive Victorianparks, hotels, and town houses.

Scarborough has a wide range of entertainment;shops, restaurants and leisure facilities, and studentscan socialise in style in one of the many pubs or eatout in one of the various restaurants and cafesaround the town.

Around Scarborough students can also surf, fish,water-ski, row, sail, play golf and tennis, or enjoy arange of indoor activities at the town's leisurefacilities, including the prestigious Stephen JosephTheatre. The town also hosts a number of majorsporting events in hockey, bowls, yachting and golf.

Information about AccommodationHere at the University of Hull we recognise thatyour time at the University is about more then justyour lectures and tutorials.The experience of whereyou live and who you live with can be as importantas any other part of University life and often will bethe most memorable.We would recommend that allnew students coming to the University of Hull live inUniversity accommodation.

The majority of International students that study atthe University of Hull, Hull Campus live in ourStudent Houses or Taylor Court Flats. Otherstudents live in either directed accommodationthrough 'The Scheme' (www.the-scheme.com) or inprivate sector houses close to university.Thosestudents who opt to study at the ScarboroughCampus would normally be housed in the Filey RoadAnnexe or a university-managed private house.

We are unable to provide accommodation forfamilies and so if you intend to bring your familythen you should not sign a contract for single personaccommodation.

Vacation/Temporary Accommodation is availablefrom the Accommodation Office at approximately£10 per night plus key deposit. After the first threeweeks in August this will only be available tostudents that plan to take up university-ownedaccommodation.

For most one year programmes that begin inSeptember the end date will be in mid Septemberthe following year. So please take this into accountwhen taking out an accommodation contract. Fordetails of University residence contract dates pleasesee the Accommodation Office website.

RESEARCH STUDENTS

PostgraduateTrainingIt is now widely recognised by employers,professional bodies and research funding agenciesthat specialist expertise alone is not sufficientpreparation for either research or a subsequentcareer.With this in mind, the University of Hullrequires that all its postgraduate research studentsfollow a research training programme related toboth their specific field of study and also to genericskills.

All research students will receive a PostgraduateTraining Manual and more information can be found atwww.hull.ac.uk/gri/research_training and from theGraduate School ([email protected]).

Research proposalIf you are taking a research degree then you willneed to have agreed your research topic and write a'research proposal' prior to the start of your course.This will allow you and your research supervisor tobe prepared for your first meeting.Your offer lettershould have the name of your intended supervisoron it, should you need to contact them.

To complement their research work each researchstudent selects from a wide range of taughtmodules, helped in their choice by their researchsupervisor and/or Postgraduate Training Officer. Eachmodule is assessed and carries a credit value thatcounts towards a Postgraduate Certificate/Diplomain Research Training. Modules are often taken fromtaught postgraduate programmes and, subject tocertain restrictions, may sometimes be taken fromundergraduate programmes. Credits may also begained through other assessed work such as seminarpresentations or conferences.The School hosts anEaster School each year to help part-time studentsachieve their training credits.

Postgraduate ConferenceResearch students starting in September arerecommended to attend the PostgraduateConference run by the Graduate School. Details aresent to new students in August.

Students studying overseasStudents who are accepted to undertake part-timeresearch in their own country are normally expectedto meet with their academic supervisor at least sixtimes per year. Costs should be funded by thestudent and arrangements made with the academicdepartment.

Students studying overseas should also take part inthe Postgraduate Training Scheme and so should beavailable to attend the annual Easter School. Studentsshould be aware that obtaining a housing contractfor this length of time may be difficult andaccommodation in a hotel may be necessary.

MPhil/PhD ProgressionAll new students intending to complete a PhD areregistered initially for MPhil. Progress is reviewed bythe acedemic department after aproximately oneyear to check there is potential for the research tocontinue for the full duration of the PhD – if so,registration is transferred to that of a PhD student.

Tuition Fees and How to PayThe tuition fee due to the University is indicated on your formal offerletter. This fee does not include any residence fees and the fee mayalso be liable to increase over the next few years.

PAYINGYOURTUITION FEESYou can pay your tuition fees and your residence charges (if youintend to live in university accommodation) in the following ways:

• OnlineYou can pay online at https//:epay.hull.ac.uk/epay/open

• By sterling bankers draftEnsure that the banker’s draft is in your name, and is made payable to'The University of Hull'. Send the draft to Finance Office (c/o Mrs SPitts) clearly stating your full name and applicant code.

• By direct bank transferYou can pay your fees from your bank, directly into the University’sbank account, by electronic transfer. It is important that you quoteyour student ID number and name as your reference, as this willenable us to identify the money when it is received.

For example, if your student ID is: 200800001 and your name is:S Jones please quote: 200800001 Jones SThese are for example only. Please quote YOUR student IDnumber and name.

Please note that even if you have allowed for your bank charges whensending the money, we are aware that the bank in the UK may stilldeduct a further cost of up to £20 for processing this transaction.

• CashWhilst this payment method is acceptable if there is no other way toensure payment, we advise against carrying large sums of money intothe country, or generally about your person.

• Credit CardWe accept payment by this method, but beware that credit rates canbe high.

• Direct Debit AgreementThis is the preferred method of payment of your University fees and ismade by regular direct instalments from your UK bank account.Atregistration you will be asked to sign an agreement authorising animmediate payment of 50% of your fees, with a further 25% beingcollected automatically approximately 3 months after registration, andthe remainder 3 months later.

The University does not require a deposit* to be paid foryour tuition fees before you arrive, but, whichever paymentmethod you use, in order to register for your course, youmust be able to pay 50% of your tuition fees at the point ofregistration.A discount of 1.5% (for payments made bycheque/bankers draft, but not for credit/debit cardpayments) is offered to students paying their full tuition feeat the time of registration.

Arrangements for Sponsored StudentsIf you are receiving sponsorship for your studies, you must be able toproduce written confirmation of sponsorship so that your sponsor canbe invoiced.You will need to send this letter to the University at leastsix weeks before your date of registration.This is to allow theUniversity time to contact your sponsor and confirm their details. If youdo not send details of your sponsor six weeks before registration youwill be expected to pay the full tuition fee. Furthermore, if a sponsordoes not meet the terms and conditions of the University regardingpayment of tuition fees, again, you will be expected to pay the fulltuition fee.

Your sponsor will need to be a legitimate Government or Public Body.Receiving funding from family members, even if through a business, isnot acceptable, and you will be classed as being 'Self-funding'. Pleasenote, that a financial guarantee is not necessarily a “sponsorship” letter.

A sponsor letter must be written in English, on formal letter headedpaper, and must state both your name and your applicant number. Yoursponsor letter should also include reference to either the amount inpounds sterling (£), or the duration of sponsorship (i.e., first year, or fullcourse), and should also include an address for invoicing. BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPSIf you have been successful in your application for abursary then you will be notified separately of thefee reduction available to you.You should take thisnotification with you to registration when StudentFinancial Services will deduct the amount from thetuition fee due.

COUNCIL TAXIf the property where you live is occupied entirely bystudents that are registered on a full time coursethat last a full academic year then the property isexempt from Council Tax. If the property is not fullyoccupied by students then the occupants areresponsible for paying the tax on the property.

If the property is not fully occupied by students butthere are students living in the property then theremay be reductions on the Council Tax. For moredetails then you should contact either the AdviceCentre or the International Office.

Please note that after 3 years registration all PhDstudents will be subject to a Council Tax charge.

Opening a UK Bank AccountIf you wish to open a bank account in your country,which you can use in the UK - look for a bank withglobal connections e.g. HSBC group of banks, orBarclays.Your bank may be able to forward yourapplication to their branches in Hull or Scarborough.Alternatively, your bank can write you a letter ofintroduction, which makes it much easier for you toopen an account after you arrive in the UK.

To open an account in the UK you will need toprovide proof of the following:

Applying for aVisaFirstly you must have a valid passport. Please note, if you are coming for one semester onlyand would like to have the opportunity to workduring your study period, you are strongly advised torequest that permission to work be stamped in yourpassport with your visa prior to your arrival in theUK.

AcademicTechnology Approval Scheme(ATAS)International student entrants to some postgraduatecourses are required to have an ATAS (AcademicTechnology Approval Scheme) certificate beforeapplying for a student visa. It is your responsibility tocheck if you require one and where applicable toapply on-line for the ATAS certification, in good timefor your arrival.

You can visit the website at www.fco.gov.uk/atas formore information on how to apply and to see if youneed to get an ATAS certificate for the course youare planning to do.Your offer letter includes theJACS code for your course.

If you require further information in order tocomplete an ATAS application (having checked yourcourse JACS code on the ATAS website) pleasecontact the Admissions Service ([email protected])who will arrange for a standard letter to be providedwith all of the information you will need. If you arean intending research student that needs an ATAScertificate you will need to agree wording of yourresearch topic with your intended supervisor andthis can be arranged through the AdmissionsService. Intending students for a small number oftaught masters programmes will need to providemodule information for an ATAS application.

If your offer is conditional upon providing originaldocuments and you are living in one of thesecountries, you may prefer to take your documents tothe partner office for them to take copies and checkon the authenticity of your papers.The partner officewill provide the authorised copies to the Univeristy.In some areas this will be quicker and more reliablethan sending documents to the UK through thepostal systems. If you choose to contact the in-country partner there will be no charge to you forthis service but you will have to bear the cost of anynecessary travel to them. Pre-masters ProgrammeThe University offers a pre-masters course thatcombines a period of academic preparation forpostgraduate study followed by (assuming successfulcompletion of that phase) the full masters course. Itis not an English Language course.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDY

English Language CoursesCourses taught at the University of Hull are alldelivered in English and we require you todemonstrate that your level of English proficiency isof a high enough standard prior to the start of yourcourse. In order to prove this we may ask for acertificate of proof, usually IELTS, to demonstrateyour level of English.

We will not waive or alter the conditions of youroffer if you have not completed a test or cannotprove that your English is to the required proficiency.

Details of the acceptable English language certificatesare given athttp://www.hull.ac.uk/admissions/international.htmlbut you may contact the Admissions Office toenquire as to whether an English Language coursethat you are studying is acceptable.

The Language Institute at both the Hull andScarborough campus offer a range of courses inEnglish as a Foreign Language, including the followingprogrammes specifically designed to meet the needsof postgraduate students. You may take one ofthese courses even if your offer does not requireit. It could be a good way to make friends and getused to the UK.

• The Bridge ProgrammeThe courses offered within this programme runthroughout the academic year on a full time basis.They aim to improve all aspects of both written andspoken English before studying at a British University.Students can be entered for an official examination,usually IELTS, at the end of the course.The course isdivided into five modules of six weeks each.

• The Summer Study Programme ('Pre-sessional' courses)

These intensive courses are held during the summerprior to the start of the University semester.Theyprovide a serious but enjoyable learning experienceas well as introducing you to staff and students atthe University of Hull.You can choose to study for afour, eight or twelve week course.

Students will be assessed on the secondcourse, however, this is not an official IELTStest.

• English for Academic Purposes, English LanguageImprovement (Hull)

• Academic English for Business (Scarborough)• English for Business (EAP/ELI/EB) (Hull)• English for Business (AEB) (Scarborough)

These courses can be taken as a part of your degreecourse in some cases and provide English languagetuition relevant to the particular demands of thecourse. In some cases this will be a condition of youroffer of a place to study at the University.

Applicant code? Your offer letter carries an applicant code which is unique to you.To help usto respond quickly please quote this number on all correspondence.

Formal offer? The letter received with this publication (from the Admissions Office orInternational Office) is the University’s formal offer of a place.

Acceptance? Please let us know in writing (letter, fax or email) whether you wish to takeup that place to ensure that we have a registration pack awaiting yourarrival. A form is available on page 19 for this purpose. Please note that dueto the volume of correspondence, we do not acknowledge receipt of theacceptance unless specifically asked to.

Where will I study? The University of Hull has two campuses, one each in Hull and Scarborough.The majority of postgraduates are based in Hull but certain subject areas arelocated in Scarborough (in particular Internet Computing,Web Design,Creative Music Technology, Contemporary Theatre). Contact the AdmissionsOffice if you are uncertain where you will be based.

Conditional offer? Your offer of a place may be subject to conditions as stated by the formaloffer letter. You are required to achieve these before registering. Pleaseprovide official evidence that the conditions have been met to theAdmissions Office as soon as possible. If you do not provide evidence of theconditions having been met it will not be possible for you to obtain a visaletter or register as a student and start the programme.

What are certified Certificates/transcripts must be originals or copies certified by the awardingcopies of results? body, but please bring the originals with you when you come to register.

Scanned certificates, emails and faxes are not acceptable. (Internationalstudents may have the assistance of an approved partner in some areas -see page 9)

References? If you have been asked to provide one or more references these must beon either the University form or on business letterheaded paper, each withan official stamp. Scanned/email and family references are not accepted.

When do I register? The date of the start of your programme is given in the formal letter. Forstudents taking taught masters programmes, registration will normally beduring the first week. Research students starting at the beginning ofSemester 1 (i.e. September) should also register at that time. If you haveaccepted the offer a registration pack will be ready for collection from youracademic department. Students starting at other times of the year shouldcontact their academic department for details of when and how to register.If you are studying part-time by research in your home country, your academicdepartment will be able to advise on registration which will normally becompleted by post.You will not be able to register before the stated start date.

Programme structure These will be available from the academic department close to the startand timetable? date. Details of taught programmes are available at www.hull.ac.uk/cms/

Scholarships? There are only a limited number of scholarships available. Please ensurethat your application is received by the appropriate deadline.The Universityparticipates in the DFID and Chevening schemes and we suggest thatinternational students contact their nearest British Council Office forguidance and visit the International Office website(www.hull.ac.uk/international). UK/EU students may find the financeinformation at www.prospects.ac.uk of help.

Deposit? The University does not at present charge a deposit to hold your place(except for some English language courses) and through some in-countryrepresentative offices.

Payment of tuition fees? Tuition fees for the first year are indicated in the formal offer letter.They aresubject to a rise in future years, see page 6 for payment details. Somecourses also require a small payment for the use of consumable materials.

Fee status? The offer letter will say if you have been assessed as an overseas student forfees purposes. If you have reason to disagree with this decision pleasecontact the Admissions Office before arrival in writing to explain why.Evidence to support a claim may be requested from you.

Bank details? See page 6. If making payments direct into that account you must notify theFinance Office immediately, quoting your full name, applicant code, start dateand amount paid into the account.

Modular fees? If your offer letter does not show tuition fees but says that the fee is basedon modules the academic department will be able to offer guidance onmodule choice and costs.

Deferring entry to a If you wish to defer your entry to the next available start date, please requestlater start date? this to the Admissions Office in writing.We will then seek the agreement of

the academic department and inform you of the decision, usually by sending arevised offer letter.We normally allow a deferral only if requested within 6weeks of the first intended start date. For later requests, applicants are askedto complete a new application form.

English language conditions? See page 21 for course availability. Conditions of English Languageproficiency will not be waived.

Postgraduate Training Scheme All research students are required to take research training modules to gain(Research students) additional credits relevant to their research work. Details are available from

the Graduate School but the scheme is described briefly on page 4 andwww.hull.ac.uk/gri.

How do I get there? See maps on page 15 - 17.The International Office produces a useful TravelGuide for International Students. (see www.hull.ac.uk/international). sent tothose non-UK students accepting an unconditional offer for September.Wewould advise you to arrive a few days before your programme is due tostart so that you can become familiar with the campus and surrounding area(see also page 3 Accommodation).

Late arrival? We would advise you to make every effort to arrive in good time for thestart of your course (international students note there is a preferred arrivalperiod) and take full advantage of introductory sessions. In exceptionalcircumstances late arrival is sometimes permitted by prior agreement. Eachcase is considered individually and is not automatic.The University cannotguarantee to provide tuition for any missed lectures or tutorials and doesnot guarantee admission to anyone coming late without prior agreement. Itis not usual to allow arrival more than 3 weeks after the start date.

Communication with If you ask a friend, sponsor or agent to find out information about youra third party? admission on your behalf it is important that you advise the Admissions

Office in advance. Under data protection legislation we cannot discuss youradmission with anyone other than yourself without your express permissionto do so.

Course Review? The University is constantly reviewing its courses to ensure their relevanceand to offer students the best possible experience. From time-to-time itbecomes necessary to review whether a course is viable, or to change thestructure. If there are any planned changes we will undertake to advise youas early as possible.

Outline of study off-campus If you are studying away from the campus you should aim to contact theacademic department as soon as possible.The department will normallycontact you with information about the course structure, venues or planningyour research. Registration may be either through contact with the coursetutors or by post.

Business School interview? If made an offer for the MBA you are likely to have the condition of aninterview with the Business School. Once you have accepted your offer, theBusiness School Admissions Manager will contact you.

CV required? If a condition of your offer is to provide a CV (Curriculum vitae) this is ashort summary (2-3 pages) of your educational background and workhistory showing your major achievements and work-based responsibilities.

Equivalency of my degree? Your offer may ask you to achieve a second class honours degree orequivalent (or similar condition). If your degree is not classified in this wayand you need help to know the equivalency contact the Admissions Office.
