APPLICATIONS

COMP S801 Object Oriented Programming and Internet Application Development

(10 credits; 2 semesters)

The course aims to provide students with programming knowledge for the development of internet based and browser

based software applications. It covers the following topics.

Application development in Java.

The conduits in internet software: networking.

The back-end in internet software: databases.

Interactive web technologies.

XML and the semantic web

AJAX and web services

There are four tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) throughout the course. Tutors will grade and comment extensively on

the TMAs.

Tutors are expected to conduct 10 tutorials with his or her group of students. The tutorials will be held on Saturday

afternoon or Sunday. Surgeries will occur on about one evening every two to three weeks, and the duties will be shared

among tutors. Tutors are also expected to allocate six hours per week to answer questions through email, online

discussion forums, and telephone. The frequency of questions usually increases one or two weeks before the cut-off

date of each TMA.

Applicants are expected to have a Master degree (or higher) in Computer Science or a related discipline, preferably

with tertiary teaching experience and industrial experience in the relevant areas.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

COMP S201 Computing Fundamentals with Java (10 credits; 2 semesters)

This is a middle level course which introduces the basic elements of computer science with emphasis on object-oriented

programming in Java.

The aims of the course are

Provide students with a sound foundation in software development and deployment models.

Provide students with a sound foundation in Object Oriented Programming.

Enable students to analyse problems and produce software designs to handle these problems using object

oriented programming methodology.

Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts in developing Java programs.

A total of four tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) are given throughout the course. Tutors will be required to mark and

comment extensively on TMAs. Each tutor is expected to conduct about ten tutorials for his/her group as well as some

surgery sessions for answering questions from students. It is a requirement that tutors are available to attend these

tutorials on either Saturday afternoon or Sunday. In addition, they need to allocate a number of hours a week to give

advice and help to their own group of students on the problems about the course which are raised by email or phone-in

queries. Usually the number of queries and questions are expected to increase as the cut-off dates of TMAs approach.

It is expected that a tutor can have access to an x86 computer with MS Windows and Word. If you need to use the dial-

up access to the Internet provided by OUHK, a modem is also needed. Answering questions from students through

other electronic means such as discussion group are also required.

Applicants must possess an honours degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or have passed Part I and Part

II examinations of the British Computer Society or equivalent. Programming experience in an object-oriented language,

preferably Java, is required. Teaching experience will be an advantage, but it is not a requirement.

MATHEMATICAL STUDIES AND STATISTICS

MATH S122 A Foundation in Applied Mathematics (10 credits; 2 semesters)

MATH S122 forms half of the foundation series in mathematics for the School of Science and Technology and is

expected to attract students interested in mathematics and applied science.

This course is composed of a preparatory package and thirteen study units. The preparatory package is designed to

prepare students to the skills required for distance learning and the course; Unit 1 reviews relations and functions and

then introduces parametric equations and polar coordinates; Unit 2 discusses systems of equations and their solutions;

Unit 3 considers matrices and matrix equations for linear systems; Unit 4 presents the cycle of mathematical modelling;

Units 5 to 10 investigate differentiation, integration and their applications; Unit 11 introduces vectors and their

operations; Unit 12 focuses on applications of calculus and analytic geometry in describing position and motion; and

Unit 13 provides an introduction to statistics. Most units will include work with the algebraic software Scientific

Notebook.

There are five tutor-marked assignments, 5 computer-marked assignments and a final examination for MATH S122.

Each tutor is expected to meet with his/her group in a series of tutorials held every 2-3 weeks throughout the course.

Tutorials are held in weekday evenings or during weekends. The tutor is required to prepare work for students to use at

the tutorials, and provide consultation on phone and the Internet.

Tutors must possess an honours degree in Mathematics or a related discipline. Experience on algebraic software and the

Internet is required. Teaching experience is highly desirable although it is not a requirement.

MATH S215 Linear Algebra (5 credits; 1 semester) Course Coordinator: Dr Douglas Ng (Tel: 2768 6880; Email: [email protected])

The course is derived from part of the M203, a middle level pure mathematics course from British Open University. It

is a compulsory course for both BSc/BSc(Hons) in Mathematical Studies, and BSc/BSc(Hons) in Statistics and

Decision Science. It aims to provide students with basic knowledge on Linear Algebra. It is also recommended for

students who wish to consolidate their mathematical and algebraic techniques in order to enhance quantitative skills for

further studies.

The course is made up of 7 study units: 5 units cover the Linear Algebra and the remaining 2 units deal with the real

numbers analysis and convergence of the sequence. The course covers the following topics:

Vectors and Conics – coordinate geometry: points, planes and lines, vectors, dot product, conic sections

System of Linear Equations and Matrices – simultaneous linear equations, row-reduction, matrix algebra,

matrix inverses, determinants Vector Spaces – linear combinations and spanning sets, bases and dimension, subspaces, orthogonal bases Linear Transformations – matrices of linear transformations, composition and invertibility, image and kernel Eigenvectors – eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalising matrices, symmetric matrices, conics and

quadrics Numbers – real numbers, inequalities, proving inequalities, least upper bounds Sequences – null sequences, convergent sequences, divergent sequences, monotone convergence theorem

Students have been advised to complete both foundation mathematics courses MATH S121 and MATH S122 before

they enrol on MATH S215. They should be independent learners on studying course units. Tutors are expected to

provide support to these adult learners in building up relevant mathematical concepts through tutorials, assignments,

telephone contact and communications through the Internet.

The course contains 2 tutor-marked assignments, which will require about one hour to mark on average. Tutors are

given a marking scheme on each assignment and they are expected to teach through assignment marking. About six 2-hour tutorials and 3 surgeries are held during weekends throughout the course. The tutor is required to

prepare notes for students to use in the tutorials and to own a computer at home. In addition, tutors are required to

allocate a minimum 8 hours per week for student contact through telephone, web learning environment or email. The

frequency of questions usually increases one or two weeks before the cut-off date of each TMA.

MATH S215 is an Online Learning Environment (OLE) course. Tutors must be able to communicate and to support

students’ learning through the OLE. Details about the OLE components can be found from

Tutors for this course must have a higher degree in mathematics (or equivalent) with a substantial component in Pure

Mathematics. Teaching experience at 'A' level or above in Pure Mathematics is a distinct advantage.

MATH S221 Mathematical Methods (10 credits; 2 semesters)

This is a second-level mathematics course featuring on the core of the applied mathematical methods and techniques

which are appropriately used for different courses in mathematics, statistics, engineering science and technology

programmes.

This course teaches the commonly used mathematical methods that are required in most science and engineering

disciplines, but also covers many examples involving skills in the application of mathematical techniques. It contains

material that will find of great use, not only in the higher level of technical courses, but also in the profession after

graduation. Part of the course units introduces the basic skill to work with the computer algebra software that can be

used to solve a wide variety of mathematical problems.

This course includes 14 units, starting with revision of calculus, then going on to first-order and second-order

differential equations; vector algebra; matrices and determinants; Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors; system of differential

equations. There are several units on mathematical methods for three-dimensional problems which include partial

differential equations; vector calculus and multiple integrals. There are also units devoted to the Fourier series; Laplace

transforms and numerical methods for differential equations. Most of the numerical mathematics such as on differential

equations, linear algebraic equations and eigenvalues, has practical computing activities associated with it. These

activities will be carried out using computer algebraic software - MathCad. The course software will be delivered on

CD-ROMS. No programming skills are required.

Students taking MATH S221 have been advised to complete one of the mathematics foundation courses: MATH S111,

MATH S112, MATH S121 or MATH S122 or have gained relevant mathematics knowledge from their previous study.

They should be reasonable competent in studying as independent learners.

MATH S249 Practical Modern Statistics (10 credits; 2 semesters)

The course is intended to provide an introduction to four major topics of modern applied statistics: medical statistics,

time series, multivariate analysis, and Bayesian statistics. The main emphasis is on the practice of statistics, although

the underlying principles are included. Use of the computer is an essential component – the course includes SPSS,

LearnBayes and WinBUGS software, which students will use them to analyze data and develop the understanding of

statistics. Four computer books give detailed guidance for all the computer activities. MATH S249 is one of the

compulsory middle level courses for BSc and BSc(Hons) in Statistics and Decision Science.

course units. Tutors are expected to provide support to these adult learners in building up relevant statistical concepts

through tutorials, assignments, telephone contact and communications through the Internet.

MATH S249 is an Online Learning Environment (OLE) course. Tutors must be able to communicate and to support

Applicants must have at least an Honours degree with good background in statistics. Teaching or working experience

with statistics would be an advantage. Experience in using statistics software would be an advantage.

MATH S373 Optimization Methods for Decision Making (10 credits; 2 semesters)

MATH S373 is a higher level course featuring in both the Mathematical Studies, Statistics and Decision

Science degree programmes. It has been taken from the Open University of Unite Kingdom.

The course examines methods which are used to tackle scientific, technological, business, management

science and social decision problems. These problems arise in a branch of mathematics known as

'Operational Research'. Because of the potential breadth of the subject, the course concentrates on a few

selected areas which are currently most important in computational mathematics. The course is divided into

three blocks covering the following topics:

Block I Direct and iterative methods of solving single non-linear equations, systems of linear equations and

systems of non-linear equations; mathematical modelling; errors in numerical processes, convergence, ill-

conditioning and induced instability.

Block II Formulation and numerical solution of linear programming problems using the revised simplex

method; formulation of integer programming problems and the branch and bound method of solution;

sensitivity analysis. This block contains a number of illustrative applications.

Block III Formulation and numerical solution of unconstrained and constrained non-linear optimization

problems using methods which include Interval reduction methods. Grid search and Golden search, steepest

descent method, Newton-Raphson method, Gauss-Newton method, quadratic penalty-function method, and

penalty-function method. This block also contains many illustrative applications.

The emphasis is on the practical nature of the methods, but straightforward mathematical analysis is

included. The topics covered include a blend of applications and case studies with the mathematical theory

and computational procedures.

About a quarter of the study time will be devoted to practical work and activities. Some activities will be

carried out using computer algebraic software - MathCAD. The course software will be delivered on CD-

ROMS as part of the course material to students and tutors. No programming skills are required. The use of

MathCAD software is an integral part of this course and tutors will be required to have access to their own

PC capable of running the software.

mathematics, operational research or a related subject. Given the level at which the course subjects are to

be taught candidates should consider carefully whether they have the appropriate academic background in

MATH S390 Quantitative Models for Financial Risk (5 credits; 1 semester)

MATH S390 Quantitative Models for Financial Risk is a 5-credit, one-semester, higher-level course. MATH S390 is

about the use of mathematics to solve real-life applications. You will learn how to represent real world financial

problems in the form of Black-Scholes equations and the type of mathematical methods that are useful in working with

these models. This course is presented at 12-month intervals.

The course is divided into 6 study units covering the following topics:

Unit 1 Introduction to financial risk and quantitative process

Understand the basic terminologies used in financial industry.

Understand varies financial instrument and their risks.

Apply game theory method to explain the idea of arbitrage.

Unit 2 Tree models for stocks and options

Explain the principle of no-arbitrage opportunity in evaluation of financial instrument, and apply it to price linear

derivative securities.

Calculate the payoff, and interpret the profit of basic derivates contracts, such as forward contracts, futures

contracts, American and European put and call options, simple commodity swaps, and interest rate swaps.

Unit 3 Continuous models and the Black-Scholes formula

Apply the stochastic calculus to model Brownian motion, and use Ito’s Lemma to derive the stochastic differential

equations.

Apply no-arbitrage principle and risk neutral (martingale) pricing.

Derive a Black-Scholes differential equation for pricing option.

Unit 4 Mathematical methods for the Black-Scholes model

Adopt an appropriate method to solve the Black-Scholes differential equation analytically.

Interpret the overall investment return based on the computational result.

Unit 5 Risk models in hedging

Construct a hedging strategy for a variety of risks.

Identify cash flows in swap transactions.

Evaluate alternative hedge positions.

Unit 6 Quantitative methods for bond models and interest rate options

Introduce more sophisticated risk models used by the financial analyst/planner to manage stocks, bonds and mixed

portfolios.

Perform calculations of yields, continuous compounding, and par, forward and zero yield curves.

ENGINEERING SCIENCES

ELEC S212 Network Programming and Design (10 credits; 2 semesters)

ELEC S212 is one of the intermediate level courses on computer networking within the Bachelor of Science in

Communications Technology degree. The course is self-contained and assumes no specific knowledge of computer

networking concepts and network programming techniques. However, students are expected to have a basic knowledge

on computer operations and programming.

The overall aims of this course are to introduce students to networking concepts and network programming techniques.

Topics related to the Internet, including its underlying mechanisms, the services available and programming for it, are

also discussed. Theoretical concepts and practical techniques are integrated with the practical analysis of case study

design and programming problems.

The bottom-up approach is taken in structuring the course. Students start from the basic building blocks of a computer

network and how these individual units are integrated to construct a complete network. This is includes how networks

can be interconnected and how communications are made across networks. Following these underlying principles,

students proceed to the programming techniques for making use of network resources and finally end with the Internet

related concepts.

Course materials include textbooks, course readings, and Internet based materials. To ensure that students have the

opportunity to develop their design and programming techniques, each unit will include a case study activity which

integrates the various topics and techniques covered in each unit. These may be network design and development case

study activities or where students are required to develop programs for a particular case study scenario. Where

appropriate, the activities may include Internet based elements.

related fields. Teaching experience will be an advantage, but it is not a requirement. Preference will be given to those

who are well versed in Unix, C and network programming and design.

ELEC S222 Electronics Principles and Digital Design (10 credits; 2 semesters)

Course Coordinator: Dr Wilson Hon Wai CHU (Tel: 2768 6817; Email: [email protected])

This course is intended to give a basic understanding of electronic principles, circuits and systems, and to develop the

fundamental theory and practical skills required to carry out engineering analysis and design. It provides essential

background knowledge for higher level courses in electronics and related disciplines. It is also suitable for students of

other disciplines who require a good working knowledge of electronics. However, the treatment is not superficial, and a

good mathematical and scientific background is necessary.

The central theme of the course is the analysis and design of digital circuits. The course includes: nodal analysis;

Thevenin and Norton equivalent circuits; transistors and the design of integrated circuits; principles of digital

electronics, including combinational and sequential logic circuits; analogue-digital conversion; and digital circuits.

Practical skills in electronics are developed in short laboratory sessions held in our own 1aboratories at Homantin and

one-day Sunday Long Lab held in our own laboratory.

This course uses a computer-aided design package to help with circuit design. Both students and tutors are required to

have access to an IBM PC or compatible computer to run this CAD software.

Tutors will be required to grade and comment extensively on 5 written assignments submitted by the students. Tutors

are required to attend regular two-hour tutorials, surgery sessions, as well as the laboratories.

Applicants are expected to have an honours degree in Electronics. Experience of teaching Electronics at tertiary level

would be a distinct advantage, but is not essential.

ELEC S224 Computers and Processors (10 credits; 2 semesters)

ELEC S224 is designed as an introduction to the technical aspects and applications of computers and processors. It

aims to provide an understanding of the key hardware components in computers and computer-based systems, their

functions, development trends, and the ways of intercommunication between them. Roles of operating systems in

personal computers, and how the corresponding subsystems and structures support these roles are discussed at length.

The course relates its hardware and software concepts to a range of computers and computer-based systems.

The course contents are:

Introduction to hardware, software and data: components of a computer, data representation, programs, case studies

(kitchen scale, digital camera, personal computers)

Processors and instructions: functions of a processor, organization of a computer, processor simulator, instruction

sequencing, programming

Embedded systems: case studies of embedded systems and applications, peripheral components and I/O,

performance metrics (power, size, cost, reliability, safety, maintainability, life cycle)

Personal computers: development of PC, main subsystems, interconnections, peripheral devices, operating systems,

processor trends

Tutors will be required to mark 4 written assignments submitted by each student over a period of a year. Each tutor will

take about 13 tutorials and 9 surgeries, each 2-hour long.

Applicants must possess at least a good honours degree in Computer, Electronic or Information Engineering with two

or more years’ tertiary level teaching experience or experience in relevant industry.

ELEC S313 Emerging Technologies (10 credits; 2 semesters)

This innovative course will be delivered in a mixture of face-to-face meetings, workshops, site visits and learner

centred self learning materials (including CDs).

This course aims to introduce advanced technologies in communications and related management. Topics to be covered

include: Access Technologies, Broadband Network, Component-Level Technologies, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL),

Gigabit LANs, Virtual Private Network, Intelligent Network, Second Generation Internet Technology, IPV6, Computer

Telephony, Wireless Interactive Multimedia, Streaming and Compression Technology, Privacy and Network Security,

Smart card, Network Management, Viruses, E-commerce, M-commerce, and industrial case studies.

The applicant should possess:

ability to communicate effectively in written English

prior IT teaching/training experience

a post-graduate degree in Communications Technology/related discipline or equivalent industry

experiences.

Applicants must possess a good honours degree in either of the following disciplines:

Computer Science, Telecommunications, Applied Computing/Engineering or related disciplines, with two or more

years’ tertiary teaching experience or experience in relevant industry.

ELEC S332 Computer Networks (10 credits; 2 semesters)

ELEC S332 Computer Networks is a ten-credit, high-level core course of the BSc/BSc (Hons) in Computing and

Networking; the BSc/BSc (Hons) in Communications Technology, the BSc(Hons) in Communications Technology

with Management; and the BSc/BSc(Hons) in Computer Engineering programmes. The course is also suitable for

learners who want to learn the basic principles and practices of computer networks.

The course describes the commonly used 5-layer Internet model, addresses growingly important matters on computer

network security, and demonstrates how applications trigger activities in the various layers of a computer network. The

course aims to use a practical application flow approach to demonstrate the interplay of the different network

components covered in the whole course.

This course aims to (i) teach learners the basic principles and practices of computer networks using the 5-layer Internet

model, (ii) enable the learners to understand the key design and applications of individual layers of the 5-layer Internet

model, (iii) expose the learners to on-line exercises as a channel for continual knowledge update through the Internet,

(iv) teach learners the basic security aspects of computer networks and (v) illustrate how computer networks operate to

support software applications.

The course covers the following topics:

There will be five tutor-marked assignments (TMAs), and one final written examination. The assignment exercises are

designed to test the learners on practical work and analysis skills. Tutors will be required to mark and comment

extensively on TMAs.

Each tutor is expected to conduct about 10 two-hour tutorials for his/her group as well as some surgery sessions for

answering questions from learners. It is a requirement that tutors are available to attend these tutorials on Saturday

and/or Sunday. In addition, they need to allocate a number of hours a week to give advice and help their own group of

learners on the problems about the course which are raised by phone-in queries, e-mails or on-line discussion board.

Usually the number of queries and questions are expected to increase as the cut-off dates of TMAs approach.

Applicants must possess an honours degree, preferably a higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering,

Electronic Engineering, Information Engineering, Communications Engineering or equivalent. Tertiary level teaching

experience or relevant industrial experience would be an advantage.

ELECS354 Inside Electronic Devices (10 credits; 2 semesters)

Content:

Chapter 1: electronic materials in the form of pure elements, various alloys and compounds are discussed along with

various types of bondings that exist in solids. A simple spread-sheet exercise helps investigate how

mobility of charge carrier affects conduction

Chapter 2: aims to examine the way electronic materials are used to make components such as resistors and

capacitors and then deployed in finished products. Different approaches to circuit building are examined,

ranging from the traditional circuit board, with discrete components soldered into holes, to hybrid circuit

assemblies, where components are integrated into the surface of the supporting substrate.

Chapter 3: two most common applications of magnetism, motors and transformers are described. Next an insight is

provided inside magnetic materials at microscopic level to see what actually determines their magnetic

behaviour. Magnetic recording is explained and three basic magnetic memory technologies are

discussed.

Chapter 4: deals with transducers. It is examined how materials can be engineered to great effect to produce

pyroelectric, piezoelectric and electro-optic responses, which are all based on one particular oxide

system--lead(Pb)- lanthanum (La)-Zirconium (Zr)- titanate(TiO3).

Chapter 5: aims to give an understanding of the properties, principles and processes behind semiconductor

microcircuits. Processes of etching, photolithography, masking and diffusion are described in detail and

how devices like p-n diodes, p-n capacitors and MOS memories are constructed. MOS and CMOS

processing sequences and industrial processes for fabrication of RAM microcircuits are described.

Chapter 6: focuses on two branches of the display technology: Cathode ray tub and liquid crystal displays. The

principles of the CRT are outlined. For liquid-crystal display Introduction to the possibility of high-

resolution liquid-crystal displays using matrix addressing via a thin-film transistor (TFT) attached to

each pixel is given. This offers the possibility of using liquid-crystal displays for television.

Chapter 7: starts with the study of medical imaging scanners and defines the superconducting condition and its

mechanism. Next principles of action of nuclear magnetic resonance is described. Realisation of a

magnet using metallic superconducting wire at 4.2K is described. The chapter closes with some other

interesting possible uses for superconductors

Chapter 8: introduces the concept of electrical modulation of optical properties and the optical modulation of

electronic properties of materials and describes how optoelectronics contributes greatly to memory

technology through magneto-optic data-storage systems and CDs alongside other magnetic and

semiconductor systems. The major emphasis of the chapter is on telecommunications. It explains how

the three aspects of transconduction, memory and display are all essential ingredients of information

technology. It explains the principles and technology of light-emitting diodes, lasers, light detectors and

optical fibres and describes in details how these devices make up ingredients of a modern

telecommunication system.

ELEC S402 Electronics Project Course (20 credits; 2 semesters)

The course ELEC S402 is an Honours level project course. It is aimed at providing an opportunity to students to

integrate the knowledge gained from the study of their courses to work independently and competitively on a scientific

project. A typical project may require students to collect, analyse and evaluate appropriate material relevant to their

project in order to enhance their understanding and awareness of the issues and problems related to the project and

generate new ideas and provide solutions. Students will also learn how to organize their work strategies and time

schedule to achieve the specified goals of a project, and produce a lucid and concise report about their achievements.

This would also help build students' confidence and give them the knack for methodically tackling scientific, technical

and business problems they would encounter in their practical and professional life.

There will be 15 two-hour tutorials appropriately spaced to maximize the tutor-student interaction. The tutorials will be

held at the OUHK campus at Ho Man Tin, where the project lab is situated, so that tutors can help their students on the

spot, when necessary. Activities at tutorials would involve constructive discussions with students about their individual

projects, providing technical guidance during the progress of the projects, and advice about writing reports on the

projects.

There will be three TMAs, otherwise known as:

Initial report about 2,000 words in the 8th week

Interim report about 3,000 to in the 20th week

3,500 words

Final report about 10,000 to in the 40th week

15,000 words

The tutor is supposed to provide guidance in writing these reports, and then vet the reports for their technical contents,

clarity and proper organization of the constituents.

The tutor must be able to suggest at least six viable project topics for the six students whom he/she would supervise

independently. The tutor should be well versed in his/her own suggested topics and take charge of the successful

completion of the projects. The projects may be related to or independent of one another, but must bear some

differences to prevent the students copying from one another. The tutor will monitor the project, and provide ongoing

support in terms of resolving technical difficulties, if any, and providing guidance for report-writing and vetting of

reports.

The tutor should possess a Master's or PhD degree in one of the following or a related field of study: Electronic

Engineering, Applied Computing, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Engineering. Sufficient

research experience gained at a university or in industry and the ability to supervise Honours level projects is required.

Professional qualifications such as MHKIE, FHKIE, RPE, FIET and CEng would be desirable.

ELEC S403 Communications Technology Project (20 credits; 2 semesters)

Students should have successfully completed at least 140 credits from the OUHK Communications Technology

Programme before they undertake this course. This course is a compulsory course for all the Honours students of

Communications Technology Programme.

This course will expose students to situations that students will face in their employment. It requires planning,

researching and putting ideas into practice in the search for solutions. Students will work under the supervision of a

tutor who will guide them throughout your project work.

Aim The overall aims of the course are to:

enable you to define a set of objectives and appropriate methodologies

provide an opportunity for you to apply and put into practice what you have learned from other communications

courses

help you develop skills in planning, managing and scheduling various tasks required to solve a number of

problems

enable you to fully develop and use your knowledge and skills in the communications

technology profession

teach you how to present a well-structured, written account of the techniques, methods and

findings from an independent study.

Content The course has no conventional course materials. Some reading of current technical materials available in journals and

reference books may be required. This course will enable students to reveal problems in this area that are yet to be

tackled and understand the directions scholars are taking to find solutions.

The project has a practical aim and is conducted at an advanced undergraduate level. Individual projects can be any of

the following: (a) projects based on expertise in one particular area from among ELEC S311, ELEC S313, ELEC S332

or (b) projects initiated by a course team or by students' work-related projects with company endorsement.

Tutorials In additional to the online support, face-to-face tutorials will be held regularly throughout the course. Activities will

involve discussion, guidance and advice-giving sessions for individual projects.

Assessment Three reports are required for submission: (i) Initial Report (TMA 01)--the project proposal, its background and the

project plan in about 1,500 words (ii) Interim Report (TMA 02)--outlining progress made, the method of investigation

and a brief outline of the final report in about 2,000 words, plus an oral presentation of the interim report (iii) Final

Report (TMA 03) in about 7,500-8,500 words--full details of the project results, conclusions and importance of these

conclusions. There may be an oral examination at the end, if required.

Laboratory classes Many advanced communications and computer facilities are available for project use. For example, wireless LAN,

satellite signal transmission and receiving hardware, multimedia and virtual reality development tools, mobile and

network simulation software. Industrial collaboration project opportunities are also available.

Applicants must possess a good honours degree in either of the following disciplines:

Computer Science, Telecommunications, Applied Computing/Engineering or related disciplines, with two or more

years’ tertiary teaching experience or experience in relevant industry. Membership of professional and learned societies

such as HKIE, HKCS, IEEE etc. will be desirable.

ENGG S228 Engineers in Society (5 credits; 1 semester)

Content:

Unit 1: An introduction to Hong Kong industry presents an overview of the development of Hong Kong industry and

explores the shift to a post-industrial society as information technology and services gain importance. The unit

introduces the work of the Innovation and Technology Commission and related developments, as Hong Kong positions

itself to become a major technology based business centre in the region.

Unit 2: The engineer in society explores the role of engineers in society and the particular situation for professional

engineers in Hong Kong. Global ethical issues for engineers are explored through case study examples.

Unit 3: Professional practice concentrates on three specific areas: safety and health, environmental management and;

intellectual property. An overview of design liability and consumer law are included.

Unit 4: An introduction to product engineering introduces the product development process as a tool to encourage

innovation in product design and the unit encourages a flexible approach by engineers. The increasing role of IT in

industry is explored from the perspective of design tools used and the improvements to processes which are possible.

Quality management and its relevance to Hong Kong are introduced and the unit ends with the product and technology

life-cycle, to lead into the next unit.

Unit 5: Engineering business development builds on the product development process introduced in Unit 4, bringing

out the business issues for small technology based start-up companies. The unit introduces the development of a

business plan and sources of finance in Hong Kong.

TMAs:

normal TMA

IT S123 Introduction to Internet Services and Applications (10 credits; 2 semesters)

ITS 123 is an introduction to the services and applications that are available on the Internet. The course is meant for

students from any discipline and for students new to the OUHK - hence the 'U' for Universal.

The aims of the course:

• Introduce a range of commonly used Internet-based services and applications for communication,

collaboration, information retrieval, social networking and personal productivity.

• Discuss and demonstrate techniques for getting the most out of Internet-based services and applications.

• Explore the practical applications of user-generated content and mobile services.

• Illustrate and assess ethical, security and legal considerations related to Internet use.

Students and tutors will be expected to:

engage in 1-1 communication through email;

engage in discussions via a bulletin board;

handle assignments electronically.

Students will need access to an IBM PC compatible computer with:

In addition to the electronic support services tutors will be expected to participate in face-to-face tutorials, which are

expected to be held during the week or at weekends. There will be four assignments during the course, all of which are

to be submitted and processed electronically by the tutor and the University. Whilst tutors will be expected to respond

to student telephone calls, students will be encouraged to make use of email as a replacement.

This course is a core course for the BSc in Design and Innovation (BScDI) programme.

The course covers the following topics:

Block 1 Introduction looks at what motivates individuals and organisations to invent, such as the desire to make

money, technical curiosity, or a desire to help others.

Block 2 Markets looks at how designers’ ideas are turned into saleable products through the consideration of

peoples’ needs.

Block 3 Products looks more closely at how new product ideas and inventions are designed, developed and

manufactured into commercially viable new products.

Block 4 Diffusion follows through by looking at how products fare in the marketplace – how they diffuse into use,

how consumers respond to them, and the extent to which changing consumer preferences and concerns are

influencing future technologies.

Block 5 Consumption looks at what is needed to build a socially and environmentally sustainable future.

TMAs

There will be five tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) that include questions and an ongoing project. This course does

not have an examination. Instead, students are required to submit a project final report and to give a final presentation.

Tutors are therefore required to mark and comment on the students’ work.

Unit 1: Electrical fundamentals I

This is the first part related to the area of ‘Electrical fundamentals’. The unit is made up of four topics. By the end of

this unit, students should be able to handle the fundamental concepts of (1) electromagnetics; (2) DC electricity; (3)

major electrical components in a circuit; and (4) electrical power and energy.

Unit 2: Electrical fundamentals II

This is the second part related to electrical fundamentals. Based on the knowledge developed in Unit 1, students should

be able to go deeper into the basic electrical concepts through the six topics in Unit 2. By the end of this unit, students

should be able to handle the fundamental concepts of (1) DC generators and motors; (2) AC theory; (3) AC circuit

theory; (4) transformers; (5) filters; and (6) AC generators and motors.

Unit 3: Electronic fundamentals

This unit is divided into five topics. By the end of this unit, students should be able to handle the fundamental concepts

of (1) diodes; (2) transistors; (3) integrated circuits; (4) Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs); and (5) servomechanisms.

Unit 4: Digital techniques/electronic instrument systems I

The topic of ‘Digital techniques/electronic instrument systems’ is separated into two parts. This is the first part,

containing six topics. After completing this unit, students should be able to handle the fundamental concepts of (1)

numbering systems; (2) data conversion; (3) logic circuits; (4) data buses; (5) fibre optics; and (6) basic computer

structure. This unit provides learners with some elementary information about how data is transferred within a network.

Unit 5: Digital techniques/electronic instrument systems II

Digital techniques/electronic instrument systems II is designed to expose students to electronic instrument systems and

software management systems used in modern aircraft. The unit is divided into five topics. The general arrangement

and concepts of (1) electronic displays; (2) electronic instrument systems; (3) electrostatic sensitive devices; (4) the

electromagnetic environment; and (5) software management control will be reviewed in this unit.

MECH S101 Aircraft Mechanics (5 credits; 1 semester)

Content:

Unit 1: Mathematics

The unit is divided into three main topics. The topics include arithmetic, algebra and geometry for aircraft maintaining

engineering.

Unit 2: Physics

Unit 2 extends the knowledge students have acquired in the first unit through nine topics. The topics for this unit

include units and measurements, matter, kinetics and dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, optics, wave motion

and sound.

Unit 3: Human factors

This unit is designed to equip students with knowledge of human factors and their effects in the aircraft industry. This

unit’s discussion of human factors will be divided into nine topics. The unit will focus on (1) general factors; (2) human

performance and limitations; (3) social psychology; (4) factors affecting performance; (5) physical environment; (6)

tasks; (7) communication; (8) human error; and (9) hazards in the workplace.

Unit 4: Materials and hardware

This unit is divided into 11 topics. Over the course of this unit, students should be able to master the properties of

materials and various types of hardware as applied to aircraft maintenance engineering. Topics for this unit include

mechanical properties and applications of different materials, the properties of different types of fasteners, and the

properties of different types of hardware.

Unit 5: Aerodynamics

This unit on aerodynamics is divided into four main topics. The unit extends students’ knowledge of aerodynamics in

aircraft flight technology by providing them with the basic concepts of aircraft technology, including the concept of

International Standard Atmosphere, the basic principles of aerodynamics, and the theory of flight and flight control.

MECH S264 Design: Principles and Practice (10 credits; 2 semesters)

MECH S264 is a middle level course for degree programmes in EMMD, PD&T, Electronics and Dip in Materials and

Design Engineering.

This course has the following aims:

to develop your design awareness by providing an understanding of how decisions are made about the design of

artefacts, the influences that contribute to these decisions and the nature of the design process, leading to a

fostering of analytical and critical judgments about designed projects.

to develop your understanding of design principles of analysis, evaluation, creation and configuration that are

applicable across a variety of professional practices, such as engineering, product design and architecture.

to develop your design skills by giving examples, instruction and experience in the use of a variety of basic

techniques of designing, e.g. drawing, modelling and creative thinking.

The course content is divided into several areas of studies:

Introduction to Design - This highlights the awareness, principles and skills of design with the help of examples

of a wide variety of chairs.

Product Planning and Design - This focuses on the problem exploration, product planning/briefing phase using a

wide variety of consumer products and domestic appliances as examples.

Creativity and Conceptual Design - This focuses on the creative aspects of designing throughout the design

process, particularly in the inventive and early conceptual phase of design.

Geometry and Configuration in Design - Emphasis is given to those activities in the design process which are

concerned with devising, manipulating and specifying the geometrical forms of designed objects.

Product Development and Manufacture - This deals with the later process of design, the phases that move on from

concept and embodiment to specific details, taking into account major practical considerations such as material

choice, material processing, manufacture, assembly and testing.

Review of Design - This deals with a range of factors which have an impact on design egg changes in product

market, development of new materials, sophistication in the use of computers and fundamental changes in

economic and social conditions.

Guided design exercises are used throughout the course.

There will be 9 tutorials of 2 hours duration and 10 surgeries of 2 hours duration. Each tutor will be expected to handle

9 tutorials and 3-5 surgeries in the whole session of the course.

There are 5 Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) to be marked by tutors. Tutors will also have to comment extensively

on 5 TMAs. Though marking guides will be provided tutors will be required to familiarize themselves fully with all the

course components in order to be able to guide the students through their written comments.

Applicants are expected to have an honours Degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline

and at least two years industrial or teaching experience preferably in the design area.

MECH S395 is a higher level optional course for the degree programmes in Electronics, Applied Computing, Product

Design & Technology, and Engineering Mechanics, Materials and Design.

This course aims to introduce an integrated interdisciplinary knowledge of mechatronics and to develop skills needed to

participate in the specification and conceptual design of intelligent machines.

The course concentrates on the architecture, desired behaviour and performance of intelligent machines rather than on

technological details. The emphasis is on principles and methods applicable to configuring mechatronic systems and

sub-systems.

The content of MECH S395 includes:

The concept of ‘intelligent machine’. Economic and other reasons for developing intelligent machines. Aspects

of intelligent behaviour. A framework based on concepts of perception, cognition and execution within which

MECH S402 EMMD Project Course (20 credits; 2 semesters)

This course requires that students should have completed 140 credits from OUHK EMMD programme. This course is a

compulsory course for all BSc (Hons) EMMD students. The students will work under the supervision of a Tutor who

will guide them throughout their project work. The student may be advised to pursue a specified course of study before

starting a MECH S402 project if it is considered that he is inadequately prepared to embark on the proposed project

topic to the depth and breadth consistent with an honours-level project.

This course offers the students an opportunity to carry out a supervised project in any area or combinations of areas

covered by the courses of the OUHK EMMD programme. Through MECH S402 the students will get a chance to

integrate the knowledge gained from the study of their courses to work independently on a scientific project. They

should be able to organize themselves and their work to achieve a specified goal within a limited time, gather, analyze

and evaluate material relevant to their project and to generate ideas and produce a written report that clearly and

concisely communicates the content of the project to others.

The course does not have any conventional type of course material for study. It will, however, require some reading of

referred scientific materials available in journals and reference books which may be recommended by the tutor to

expose the student to previous work relevant to his project. Such an exposure would help reveal the problems that are

yet to be tackled and the direction the scholars are taking for providing solutions.

The MECH S402 project will usually have a practical aim in view. The projects may include design proposals or

specifications for a system or a mechanical device, policy proposals or scientific studies relevant to such practical ends.

Several kinds of activity can be the basis of a suitable project, whether it is concerned with an investigation of an

organization or a system or a design specification for a mechanical device. Projects must draw on knowledge gained by

the students from various courses studied under the EMMD programme and may also draw on knowledge or experience

they have gained elsewhere. Tutors will be required to give a list of at least 5 projects (or more for students to have a

choice) which they can guide and can offer to the students for guidance. The tutors should contact the Course

Coordinator to find out what equipment is available in the OUHK laboratory to conduct project work before deciding

on the project list. A tutor will normally be required to guide 5 project students.

There are 14 two hour tutorials spread throughout the year. Tutor is required to supervise a group of 5 students in the

tutorials to be conducted on Thursdays evenings or Sundays. In addition to tutorials the tutors have to guide the

students through telephone tutoring for which they must set aside about 4 hours per week.

Tutors will have to assess the initial, interim and final reports submitted by the students. They will also be required to

attend and assess the oral presentation after the interim report.

The tutor should possess a Master’s or PhD degree in one of the following or a related field of study: Mechanical

Engineering, Material, Design, Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical, Computer-aided Engineering or related fields.

Some project supervision or research experience is desirable.

techniques to tackle ecological problems. Furthermore, this course can promote students’ analytical and writing skills

through the analysis and interpretation of ecological data, and via an independent ecological project and the writing of a

scientific report.

Practical fieldwork based on Hong Kong sites is a most important part of the course. Students will attend three out of

component of this practical work.

Tutors will assess and interact with students via five TMA, one of which will be a student project report.

Tutors will conduct regular tutorials, some of which will be field based visits to sites of ecological interest in Hong

Kong. They will also conduct surgeries on rotation.

Applicants are expected to have a higher degree in one of the biological sciences or suitable environmental subject.

Working experience in ecology is a distinct advantage as is some teaching/lecturing. An on-going interest in the

ecology of Hong Kong would be a most welcome attribute.

CHEM S310 Analytical Chemistry (10 credits; 2 semesters)

CHEM S310, Analytical Chemistry, is a higher level course. This course is designed for students who intend to follow

the degree programme in environmental studies.

This course introduces fundamental principles and applications of quantitative analysis by chemical methods, for

instance, volumetric analysis, and then deals with techniques in sampling and sample pretreatment. The rest of this

course concentrate on methods and applications which are commonly used in environmental analysis such as UV-vis

spectroscopy, AAS, GC, HPLC.

CHEMS340 Inorganic Chemistry

CHEMS340 Inorganic Chemistry is a two-semester higher level course. It is an optional course for students pursuing

the BSc in Applied Science (Biology and Chemistry). The course is tentatively scheduled to be held in April 2013 .

This course shall provide a detailed analysis of the transition-metal chemistry, which includes structure, bonding,

magnetism and spectral properties of transition-metal complexes, organometallic compounds and bio-inorganic systems.

There will be five tutor-marked assignments, dayschools, laboratory sections and a final examination designed to assess

the student’s progress in this course. Tutors will be required to grade the TMAs and give constructive feedbacks on

students’ progress.

Tutors are required to provide guided studies to their students in tutorials sections and a series of surgeries throughout

CHEM S345 Principles of Chemical Synthesis (5 credits; 1 semester)

CHEM S345 is a core course for students pursuing the BSc Applied Science (Biology and Chemistry) and possibly an

elective course for other programmes in this University.

This higher level course builds on the foundation of organic chemistry in CHEM S251 or its substitutes. This course

covers the topics relevant to the strategy of organic synthesis, with particular emphasis on selectivity and synthetic

design. Students will be trained to possess independent abilities in academic analysis and presentation skills by conducting the various learner-based projects.

The overall aims of this course are to expose students to a wide variety of the modern chemical reactions available to

the organic chemist, including some of the methods and techniques for the isolation and identification of pure

compounds. Case studies on solid-phase synthesis, including combinatorial methods, insect pheromones,

prostaglandins and beta-lactams, reinforce the many facets of the complex process involved in the design and

preparation of such substances. Through various learner-based activities, students will understand and appreciate the

methods and process of science, and be able to critically evaluate scientific research publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as to broaden their knowledge base in scientific research topics.

There is no entry requirement for CHEM S345, however, basic skills at university level and knowledge equivalent to

oriented course in Applied Science Programmes. Students have to applied all the knowledge and skills acquired in the

second and third level courses and draw up a plan to investigate a scientific or technical problems in a manner that usually practised in the academic community.

Because of the very academic nature, only a small population of students finished all compulsory courses can be

admitted. Students enrolled on SCI S410 will be working with at least one faculty member from the School of Science

and Technology and tutor. This feature has a lot in common with conventional universities, where final year students often work alongside academic individuals.

ENVR S237 is compulsory for students who intend to follow the degree programme in Environmental Studies. It

provides students with a basic understanding of our natural resources (land, air and water) and related environmental

problems. Besides, ENVR S237 is complementary to many areas of study in science and technology, such as

engineering, environmental and urban management, resource planning, natural resources and environmental health.

The course first deals with natural cycles. Units on epidemiology describes the use of this subject in assessing the

possible effect of environmental pollution on health. The study of pollution chemistry is necessary for laboratory work

and for an understanding of water and air pollution. Units on air pollution include the monitoring of pollutants, health

and environmental effects, and methods of control, with reference to relevant legislation. The course further discusses

water supply, pollution and pollution control. Units on noise pollution include monitoring of the health and

environmental effects and methods of control, with reference to relevant legislation. The problems and methods of

management (collection, disposal, reclamation) of domestic, hazardous wastes and the management of radioactive

wastes are also discussed.

multiple choice assignments (CMAs).

Although the contents of the course are mainly focused on Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, comparisons will be

made with oversea countries to allow learners to apply their theoretical knowledge to the real world.

The course comprises mainly of ten self-study units, which are developed by a team of experts appointed by the Open

University of Hong Kong. Each study unit contains core subject matter which ties in with the unit's objectives as well

as relevant readings and self-diagnostic exercises. In addition, supplementary readings and a comprehensive course

guide will be provided to all tutors and students. Online (Webct) support will be given to students and tutors.

Legal Framework in Hong Kong – Civil law and criminal law

Application and Implementation of EMS and EMS Auditing - establishing an EMS in an organization, EMS

There are five Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) for the course. The first four TMAs deal with one of the core issues

of environmental law and management. The last assignment relates to an individual project conducted by students.

Tutors are required to mark assignments and to provide guidance to students during the design, operation and reporting

stages of project.

Each tutor will be assigned a group of about thirty students. There are about ten 2-hour tutorials and eight 2-hour

surgeries throughout the course. Tutor is also required to attend dayschools on either Sunday, Saturday afternoon or

weekday evenings. In addition, tutor must set aside couple of hours a week to give tuition counseling on phone-in

queries.

Applicants must have at least a higher degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline. Those with

practical experiences in environmental management and legislation are preferable.

ENVR S403 Applications of Biology and Chemistry in Environmental Studies

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills in applied biology, chemistry for applications in

environmental science and technology. After studying this course, students will be able to design environmental

control devices and monitoring strategies on the basis of the principles in biology, chemistry and environmental studies;

design and operate of models for accurate predictions of environmental impacts on the basis of their applied science

knowledge and skills. Working examples are used extensively to illustrate the applications of principles to practical

situations.

Design concepts of various types of environmental control and monitoring devices

There will be a total of five tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) spread throughout the course. TMA1 to TMA4 relate to

the course contents, whereas TMA5 is the final report of a mini project of individual student. Tutors shall provide

guidance and supervision to the design and conduction of projects.

The course will contain at least three compulsory dayschools (3 hours each). Various field visits would also be

arranged to allow students to get hands-on experiences in environmental engineering and design.

Tutors should have an honours degree in relevant disciplines. Preference will be given to those with a higher degree

and working experience in environmental science and technology. Teaching experience is also desirable although not

essential.

ENVR S410 Environmental Project (20 credits; 2 semesters)

This is a higher-level course aims to enhance students' independent ability in carrying out an environmental research

project. After studying this course, students will be able to analyse and integrate facts and ideas in the context of

problem solving and drawing conclusions in a research exercise of relevance to the environmental professions.

Students will be part of a tutor group of approximately five peers and work under the supervision of a tutor and or

university professor. The final selection of investigation / research topics will depend on such factors as student’s own

interest, supervisors specialisms, lab facilities and practicalities of obtaining results within the academic year.

The course is an optional subject for BSc(Hons) students. Students must accumulate at least 120 credits in the

Environmental Studies Programme before taking this course. This course does not have Study Units or set textbooks.

There are however three Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs), a student oral presentation and, a final oral examination

where necessary. These three TMAs are structured so that they guide a student through three stages of the project,

which approximates a BSc Hons thesis in style and scope.

The tutor is required to supervise student at the tutorial. In addition, he / she will need to set aside couple of hours a

week to give advice on phone-in queries e-mail exchanges and to mark the TMAs.

Applicants must have at least higher degree in Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering or related Engineering

disciplines. Experience in carrying out and supervising environmental research projects are highly desirable.

Applicants will also be asked to provide a list of two or three possible projects.
