2013 Graduands, please read through the following set of briefing slides to guide you in making
a decision about your next step.

What are my options after the GCE A-Level?

Level as a school or private
candidate.

1. Admission to the University is based on an applicant’s University Admission Score (UAS)
For information regarding
admissions, refer to the
respective university
websites
Important:
• The deadline for applications is the 1st
of April 2013 for NUS, Yale-NUS, SMU, NTU and
SUTD. For SIM, the deadline is 31st
Mar 2013. PLEASE CHECK THE RESPECTIVE universities’
websites for details on admissions procedures.
2. SIT was established in 2009 as an initiative by the Ministry of Education to provide upgrading
opportunities primarily for polytechnic graduates. As of AY2011, SIT will accept
a limited number of applicants with other qualifications, including the Singapore-Cambridge
GCE A-Levels and International Baccalaureate (IB) into some of its degree programmes.

2) Polytechnics/Lasalle NAFA
For information regarding
admissions, refer to the
respective polytechnic
websites
• For students interested in pursing an education in the Fine Arts, they may wish to apply for
NAFA or Laselle.
• Nanyang Polytechnic offers the following Healthcare courses for A level holders: Diploma in
Occupational Therapy, Diploma in Physiotherapy, Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography,
Diploma in Radiation Therapy.
• For the other polytechnics, A level holders can apply for direct admission to certain Year 2
courses if they fulfil the minimum criteria. Please check the respective websites.

3. Private Schools and Institutions Private Schools and Institutions determine their own curriculum and complement the
Autonomous and Publicly-Funded Institutions in offering additional educationpathways.

When choosing a course at a Private
School and Institution, consider the
following:
1) What are my career interests, work values and career-life goals?
5) Will my qualification be recognised by my employers after I
graduate?
2) What are the subjects, admission criteria, school
hours and learning environment like in a
private school?
4) After I graduate from the Private School and Institution,
will I be able to use my qualifications to apply for
further studies?
3 a) Is the school registered under the Singapore Private
education Act?
b) Is the school EduTrust-Certified?
Examples of Private Universities in Singapore are:
SIM University, James Cook University, MDIS.

4. How can I re-take my GCE A-Level?
When re-taking your GCE A-Level, take note of the following:
1.If you are eligible for N.S. and have a full GCE A-Level Cert, you
may not re-take your GCE A-Level as a school candidate. However, you
may re-take your GCE A-Level as a private candidate;
2. As a private candidate, you may choose to re-take your GCE A-Level
on your own or enrol in a private school.

Things to consider when selecting a course of study
1. Be objective: What are your strengths and
interests? Are they aligned with the course you are
selecting?
2. Be realistic:
• Check that you have the minimum entry
requirements to qualify for your desired course
before registration
• Will the course help you move closer to attaining
your aspired career?

Financial assistance
The Government is committed to ensuring that no able student is deterred by the costs
of post-secondary education in Singapore. It has put in place several assistance schemes to
help students at the autonomous universities, Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and
polytechnics who need some form of financial aid.
