Form of Funding Support

• Each approved project will typically receive funding support of up to HK$ 0.5M

• Total BGF for this Call for Proposal is up to HK$ 5M

• Project Period: 12 months • Project Start Date: July 1, 2020

• Working with the HKUST Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab (SSC) initiative of the University

Eligibility

• Applicants must be full-time faculty members of HKUST

• Projects should demonstrate advancement in technology readiness of HKUST research outputs, prospect of adoption by industry partners, or establishment of startup.

• Projects that focus on basic research are NOT eligible

Selection Mechanism & Criteria

• Availability of IP protection(Preference given to applications that deploy the University’s inventions/software owned by University with commercialization potentials)

• Commercial potential and impact• Forming start-ups

• U*STAR, YWY fund, TSSSU, E-fund, mentorship, seminars, EP-HKSTP joint incubation programs, etc.

• Foreseeable adoption and application by industries for further downstream development

Review Procedures

• Review meetings in May 2020

• Review Committee: Chaired by AVP-KT, members may include D/Heads of TTC, faculty members in related technology areas, as well as external experts

• Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend the Review Meeting to present the application and answer questions from the Review Committee

Budget RequirementsThe Fund will not cover:

• Equipment;• General administration and overhead;• General office IT equipment;• Depreciation / amortization or provisions not

presenting actual expenses incurred;• Maintenance cost of existing equipment;• Utilities – charges for electricity, gas, water,

telephone, fax, etc;• Travel, accommodation and subsistence

(except local travel expenses within Greater Bay Area on a reimbursement basis).

• Themes: different faculty technologies• Introduction sessions: by faculty / their research teams• Submission of technopreneurship ideas for the themed technologies: by students• Prize presentation cum meetup/matching session: with faculty, research teams, all 

contestants / winners to explore technopreneurship collaborations• Advising / mentoring and other support: to technopreneurship teams

Expected outcomes: once a month, 3 months per semester, 6 Challenges per year, 12 technologies per year, 60 or above technopreneurship possibilities per year

alumni)/faculty with diverse backgrounds and knowledges interested / involved in technologies and entrepreneurship (contestants in the monthly B.E.S.T. Technopreneurship Challenge, entrepreneurship fund / award recipients, participants of renowned competitions etc.)
