What is a computer network? And why are they useful?

LANs and WANs

There are two main types of network:

1. Local Area Network (LAN)

2. Wide Area Network (WAN)

Local Area Network (LAN)

A LAN covers a small area such as one site or building, eg a school or a college.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A WAN covers a large geographical area. Most WANs are made from several LANs connected together.

Routers

Routers are used to connect computers. They do so by sharing data packets between computers.

Routers are usually used to connect computers to the internet.
