Three Important Security Tips to Protect Your Identity and the University’s Information. October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. The Information Security Office would like to remind you of three simple tips that can help you protect your identity, the identity of our students, and ensure public trust in the University.

Tip #1: Update all your software. Most computers are attacked through out-of-date web browser plug-ins (e.g. flash, java, reader, quicktime). Update your browser plug-ins now to prevent an attack on your computer.

Tip #2: Don’t reuse your password. When you reuse your Pepperdine NetworkID password on other Internet sites or accounts, you are making the University vulnerable to attacks through your account. If your password is stolen from another account it can lead criminals back to Pepperdine, and they can use your account to send spam or steal your identity.

Tip #3: Secure your computer and mobile devices. Laptops, desktops, and mobile devices can carry confidential information about you and our community. Be sure to secure your devices with a password and never store social security, credit card or patient health information on a mobile device.

IT Evaluates Two Lecture Capture Platforms for the University. This fall, Information Technology is evaluating two potential lecture capture platforms – Panopto and Matterhorn – for possible use at the University. Lecture capture is a process that allows faculty to record a lecture or class discussion and then make it available online for students to review. This tool can help improve material comprehension for students by allowing them to replay lectures for studying or analyze class discussions. Lecture capture can also help students who miss class due to illness or athletic events. To learn more about this pilot or if you are a faculty member who is interested in participating in the pilot, contact the Technology and Learning group at [email protected].

NewsTechnology and Learning Faculty Conference Receives Great Reviews. Almost 100 faculty members from all five schools of Pepperdine attended the inaugural Technology and Learning Faculty Conference held at the Drescher graduate campus on September 14, 2011. Speakers included Pepperdine's own faculty members who presented their experiences and best practices on how to incorporate the latest technologies into the classroom. Here are a few positive experiences from attendees:

"I was delighted that so many faculty members were there and pleased that so many are interested in improving their teaching by using technology," said an attendee. "The presentations I heard were interesting, inspiring, and easy to understand. It was excellent to use faculty from all of the schools and to let us share ideas and get to know one another. Please do this again!"

"I found the ways that the iPads were used enlightening. Hearing how other people actually use the various technologies was very useful and inspiring. In general, though not an insight, it was further reinforcing how much the school embraces and supports technological innovation in teaching."

Those who were unable to attend can view video recordings of each session on the conference website. http://services.pepperdine.edu/techlearn/conf11/post-conference.htm.

At the conference, attendees were encouraged to "Get Involved" with a number of Technology and Learning initiatives, such as grants, peer-to-peer faculty presentations, technology pilots, and more. In order to obtain information about any of these initiatives, you may indicate your interest at the following site: http://pepperdine.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_4NpbYypAeK04NHm.

New ServicesIT Raises Awareness of Technology Services with Monthly 'Talk to I.T.' Table in the Cafeteria. Every month Information Technology will hold a 'Talk to I.T.' booth in the Seaver cafeteria for students to ask questions about technology around campus or IT services available to them. This initiative was created in response to feedback from students in the 2011 TechQual+ survey. Students said they were unfamiliar with the technology services available to them at Pepperdine.

IT hopes this monthly booth will help raise awareness of the many technologies IT has to offer to community including online secure storage, wireless printing, software and hardware discounts available through the Computer Store, and tech support through TechCentral and the Help Desk. Faculty and staff are welcome to visit the 'Talk to I.T.' booth, which will be held in the Seaver cafeteria on Monday, October 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Updates and UpgradesNew Canon Copiers Increase Productivity of Pepperdine Staff. During the last week of September Information Technology installed 45 of 88 new Canon copiers at all Pepperdine southern California campuses. Staff are pleased with the new models and the secure, color scanning feature that comes on every new copier.

"Last spring I needed to scan and email a 12 page document which took nearly 25 minutes from start to finish," explained Debbie Porter from the Center for the Arts. "After training on the new scanner, I can see it will take less than five minutes to scan and send double that number of sheets and will not require me to make several trips to the copier. Our new printer/scanner is definitely an upgrade and a time saver."

"My favorite feature on the new copier is the color scanner," commented Fine Arts' Stephanie Marshall. "Thank you so much for including this function on our new copy machines. It is saving me time and saving my division money. Having the new copier has really improved my workflow and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to receive a new piece of equipment like this."

Unfortunately, the earthquake and resultant tsunami in Japan have delayed shipment of the remaining 43 copiers. As soon as they are available for installation, we will notify your department. If you have questions regarding the Canon copier refresh project, please contact Ory De La Rosa at [email protected].

Future PlansStudent and HR Areas in WaveNet Unavailable this October. Information Technology (IT) is conducting a multi-year project to improve user experience, stability, and reliability by upgrading PeopleSoft and WaveNet. To prepare for the upgrades, this October IT will need to take down the student and human resources areas of WaveNet for three days. During this time, IT staff will be upgrading the technology that supports these areas, making way for future changes in usability and reliability.

Beginning Friday, October 28, at 12:00 a.m. to Monday, October 31, 7:00 a.m., the following areas will be unavailable:

• Students will not be able to access course schedules, grades, student records, and financial services.• Staff will not be able to access student and human resources applications.• Faculty will not be able to view class management tools such as class rosters, post grades, or student

advising.

Because IT will be updating the technology behind PeopleSoft, WaveNet users' experience will not change after the outage in October. To learn more about the PeopleSoft Upgrade project, visit: http://services.pepperdine.edu/it/newsevents/news/2011/peoplesoftupgrade.htm.

Project Wrap UpIT Completes Wireless Improvements at Malibu Dorms. This past summer, Information Technology upgraded the wireless network by installing the latest wireless technology and increase the amount of wireless access points in the Seaver dorms, Lovernich, and Page apartments. This upgrade was performed to improve the performance and reliability of the wireless network in these areas. Historically, the type of construction and the amount of wireless interference in these dorms created a poor wireless experience for many of the residents.

EventsTechnology and Learning Offers Faculty-Led Technology Workshop Series. By popular demand, the Technology and Learning group is offering a series of faculty-led workshops this term. This series of workshops will help Pepperdine faculty see what technologies their colleagues are using in the classroom and give them a chance to gain hands-on experience.

• October 13 - Learning Circles for Online Learning - Dr. Margaret Riel of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology will share her insights on using online collaborative tools to promote student learning and engagement. Click here to register.
