Alexander Christiani, M.Eng. Chair, “6th Forum” Organizing Committee Maritime Infrastructure Community

Message from the Organizing CommitteeOn behalf of the Maritime Infrastructure Community, we welcome you to Lobito for the 6th Maritime Infrastructure Forum – “6th FORUM” Since the inception of the Maritime Infrastructure Community of Knowledge we have been providing international venues to advance the practice of developing marine facilities, by sharing information and lessons learned.

is year’s theme is “Success through Diversification” and this is the reason that we chose the Sonaref Project as the host of our 6th Forum to give an opportunity for our overseas team to expe-rience Africa and to be able to see all phases of a Quay Wall being constructed in Gravity Block Work.

is 6th Forum program has been organized to maximize your exposure to new construction methods, the latest advances in our profession, and to offer professional development through multiple topics while also offering opportunities to develop or expand your network of contacts and professional peers.

Specifically, 6th Forum offers one day of Short Courses present-ed by renowned international experts, two days of presentation of technical papers “Cases”, a land and waterside tour of the Sonaref Marine Facility project, a waterside tour of the Port of Lobito, a visit to the coastal protections of the Lobito Sand Bar and a fabulous evening of partnership at the iconic “Terminus Hotel” that was open in December 29, 1932.

Following the Forum a Technical Mission will be performed in China at the Hong Kong-Macau Link to witness the innovations in the construction of a submerged pipe Tunnel. is Link would be the world’s longest with a total length of 6.7 kilometers and one of the deepest, at almost 45 meters under China’s Pearl River Delta. is expanded program continues our commitment to mentor the next generation of marine facilities professionals, helping building tomorrow’s leaders in our profession.

is Forum could not have come into being without the dedicat-ed efforts of many individuals and we hope that you take the full advantages of the activities of the Forum and the rich experi-ence offered around the Lobito area.

We look forward to meeting many of you over the course of the Forum while also seeing friends, colleagues from previous projects, and business partners from previous Forums. ank you again for attending the 6th Maritime Infrastructure Forum, and welcome again to Lobito.

Lobito: e Living Room of Angola

Known for its slogan "e Living Room of Angola" the city of Lobito is one of the attractions of Angola and the third largest in the country. Bathed by the indigo waters of the Atlan-tic and characterized by their small pen-insula Restinga, Lobito is the right tourist destination for all visitors to the province of Benguela.

Its colonial architectural heritage and its beautiful beaches are a real postcard in the western African coast. Among the historic buildings, highlights include the ancient palace of the Governor, Church of Our Lady of Arrábida, Hotel Terminus and the Museum of Ethnography. Ship Zaire is a landmark and part of the cultural map of the city, In 1961it carried the now President of the Republic Eng. José Eduardo dos Santos from Luanda to the Congo (Zaire) to integrate the patriots who fought for the independence of Angola . Currently this historic-cultural monument is situated at a square at the Restinga Lobito and serves as a public library.

“O Lobito” means the door, the bridge, the passage.

e extraordinary conditions of this natural port first attracted the Portu-guese because of the deep water bay and for the same reason, later comes the Sonaref Marine Facility, which is a geo-graphically strategic point for the instal-lation of the future Lobito Refinery, con-tributing to economic growth in Angola.

Another landmark of National Infrastruc-ture is the railway line “Caminhos de Ferro de Benguela”, which traverses 1344km between the longitudes and latitudes of Angola to the eastern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo

Sonaref Project

e Sonaref Project, located in the bay of Lobito in Angola, is the grouping of mari-time infrastructures that will be part of the future refinery of Sonangol. Com-posed of three terminals: a MOF (Marine Offloading Facility) for unloading of refin-ery equipment; a solid bulks shipment berth and a liquid bulk shipment berth.

For the construction of these three terminals, the methodology of gravity quay wall blocks was chosen for the first time in the history of the Odebrecht Group. During the Forum the project will be in a very interesting moment with various activities at sea and on land running simultaneously:

We will have the opportunity to observe the dynamic compaction activity used as a means to compact the marine fill area; these compaction efforts range from 1000 to 8000 KN-m. We will also have the privilege to enrich our knowledge in regards to this compaction technique with the participation of a leading inter-national expert, Professor Karl Rainer Massarsch.

In addition we will be able to observe the engineering structural fill works behind the quay walls, which are composed of a system of granite layers of various sizes and protective geotextile.

Further, we will also witness the diving activities required in the preparation and leveling of the quay wall foundations in which the blocks will be set. ese activ-ities require the use of the latest genera-tion of commercial diving equipment, which will allow us to display and observe the activity in real time. Our field engi-neers will explain the methods and tech-niques used to ensure that all of the foundation is leveled to the design eleva-tion within a tolerance of no more than 10 mm.

But perhaps the most interesting activity is the installation of the quay wall blocks, of up to 345 tons, with the use of a 800 ton heavy lift barge. is barge is fully operated through a system of anchors and winches. In fact, during the block installation, it is the diving team that communicates the instructions via advanced communications to the barge operators until final positioning of the blocks.

Finally, we will also have the opportunity to visit the quay wall prefabrication yard, and witness the measures that have been taken to control the concrete heat of hydration of the blocks, including the explanations of Professor Hollanda, who supervised and participated in the development of such control methods.

We will have also the opportunity to witness the handling and shipment of these blocks, through custom made lifting device and a 500 Ton Gantry Crane, as well as rolling of blocks with the use of air bags. Surely this technical visit will bring out many questions and inquiries, adding new knowledge to all.

Hanha do Norte

Sonaref Project is implementing a Community Development Program in Hanha do Norte Communi-ty which is located 20km from the future Lobito Refinery, in an agricultural vale. is program, developed by Sonaref´s Social Responsibility Division in line with the regional and traditional community customs, aims to contribute to Sustainable Community Development through the positive change in quality of life and enhancement of productive opportunities from a self-support perspective.

During its 1st year of existence the Program has established priority actions based on the Sustaina-bility Policy of the Odebrecht Group, focusing on Social and Economic Development, Environmental Responsibility, Political Participation and Culture Appreciation, seeking to strengthening community ties and making community members responsible for their own transformation.

Small family ran self-subsistence farms are major beneficiaries of the Program. However, agriculture is not a priority over other aspects of the program, considering that all have a similar weight and meas-ure of relevance.

e Program has succeeded in establishing a Com-munity Association in order to manage the proposed actions. e Association, named Tuyula Lomunga (in Umbundo), which translated means "Together we shall overcome" currently coordinates three primary actions, including Employment, Income Generation and Social Development. Actions focused on Employment and Income Gen-eration promotes jobs as personal and professional development factors and productive social inclu-sion. ese are consolidated in: Ecological Hand-made Soap factory, Corn Meal Processing and Family Farming. Social Development actions are focused on: Com-munity Health, Adult Literacy, Citizenship, Culture Restoration and Environmental Education activities.
