As much as DJing and clubbing is about getting on the end of photo bombs and doing the running man on the dancefloor, spare a thought for the promoter.

They’re the ones number-crunching all night, fielding headaches from the bar/security/DTCM/rival promoters/rain gods. And if they’re the ones lording it up in VIP with a bottle of Champagne, then they’ve either done their job very, very well, or they’re douche bags.

Either way, spare a thought for the promoter next time you’re at a (good) party, because a lot of unseen work goes into your 3 hours of clubbing every night, and – generally speaking – they’re the reason our club scene is in such rude health at the moment.

ThE MUsIC ROOM was filled with questionable head gear and a raving Chipmunk (obviously) as Dubai’s Drum & Bass faithful came out to party to the sounds of talented Producer/DJ, Marcus Intalex. With MC DRs providing lyrical accompaniment to his 2 hour set, the soul:R label boss had bobble hats rocking and said Chipmunk raving on the dancefloor. A special shout out goes to somalie and Mach4 who not only provided an energetic warm up set, but spent the rest of the night raving against the speakers until the last tune was dropped at 3am. And with Andy C next up on April 10, the DnB good times keep on coming.

eRIc claPton @ MEDIA CITy AMPhIThEATREThE MEDIA CITy Amphitheatre was packed to capacity as legendary guitarist Eric Clapton entertained a mature crowd with a night of nostalgia. Classics like ‘Tears In heaven,’ ‘Wonderful Tonight’ and ‘Layla’ got a great reception, while he also brought out covers of Jimmy Cox and Muddy Waters, proving his blues credentials. With the riffs tumbling out of his guitar, and with a voice still strong after 5 decades in the business, he announced that this was likely to be his last visit to the region due to the rigours of touring, meaning slowhand went out very much on a high.

Happy birthday to XL Beach Club, which turns 3 on March 28, which is a good age in Dubai’s ever rotating club scene.

Signed to Louie Vega’s record label, acclaimed Ancestroul Soul musician and DJ, Boddhi Satva, is one of House of Afrika’s biggest bookings, and will be dropping his cutting-edge material at the Dek on 8 on Friday March 28. Ahead of that, we take a sneak peek into his record bag to find out what makes him tick

My biggest track at the MoMent is… 'Apaga O Fogo' feat. Game Walla of Angola and produced by yours truly. It’s getting great responses from the dancefloor and it’s available on digital sites.

the track that always works on the floor is… It depends where I play, but one track I always play and that always has a great impact on the dancers is Lana Del Rey - 'Video Games' (Manoo Remix).

the track that started your ancestral soul series was… Gyptian - 'hold you' (Boddhi satva Ancestral soul Remix) definitely started the series. you can actually download both series for free

on on official.fm. Just search Ancestral soul Interpretations.

the track that i wish i’d never played was… Actually, a set I wish I had never played (lol). I was booked in a very, very Big Room club in Portugal, but the guys only booked me for my name, not knowing my sound. Let’s just say that the set I played was not of my musical standards. The few fans that I had there looked at me like I had sold my soul to the devil. After that I said never again...

the track i get requested for the Most is… Even though it’s an old song of mine, I get requests for Los santos feat. Tania and my

Page 31: Infusion # 220: March 23-April 6 '14

Ancestral soul Remix of Rihanna’s ‘stay’.

the first track that Made Me fall in love with house Music was… There’s two actually, Inner City, ‘Big Fun’ and kevin yost, ‘Dreams of you.’

the first track i’d play at My wedding would be… surely a slow Jam, but I have some time to think of which one I would pick, since that girl hasn’t come to me yet.

the first track i’ll drop in dubai will be… That’s always the surprise, so you’ll have to come and discover for yourself.

House of Afrika feat. Boddhi Satva, Friday March 28, Dek on 8, 6pm-3am, free entry.

Welcome back to the city, you’ve played a few times here – good/bad memories? We always enjoy playing in Dubai, it’s such a different experience from many of the places that we play, the crowds are unique and the hospitality we have received in the past has been second to none. The new energy of the city can be really felt on the dance floor and at the parties, we really feel the Plump love in Dubai.

You’ve been playing a few classic breaks sets recently – was that public demand, or something you wanted to revisit? It was a bit of both. As artists we have continued to develop our sound for the past 15 years, we love to experiment and come up with new and exciting ideas in dance music. But we still love all the old Plump tunes and rarely get a chance to play them out these days. We’ve made fans of all ages along the way, so we thought a classics set was a good way to say thanks for the continued support that we are still receiving from our early days in Breaks. It’s also a good way for our new fans to discover our sonic roots. We like to live in the present and look to the future, but we can still bang out a blazing breakbeat classics set.

the bass music scene has been big for a while now, do you feel part of that scene? We keep finding that people are hearing Plump DJs tunes in Bass music sets. We love and respect that this is happening and we are thankful for the support! however, we do not like to think of ourselves in one genre only as there is so much music out there to enjoy. We call our sound Plump music, and we hope it appeals to multiple genres.

You’ll have been Djing and producing for 20 years in 2018, any big plans coming up, how would you like to celebrate? Wow 2018, that’s 4 years away! We will definitely still be on our mission to make people dance to Plump music and still be in the studio every day developing our sound. We will probably celebrate with a bottle of champagne.

You’re playing at Burning Man Festival this year – what is it about the festival that’s so special?Burning Man will be a challenge and an immense pleasure we imagine. We have heard nothing but good things about this festival and hope to bring some Plump energy to the desert. I think what makes Burning

Page 34: Infusion # 220: March 23-April 6 '14

Man so special is the sense of community and artistic freedom of expression that is associated with the festival.

You’re golf fans, and we recently spoke to Marcus Intalex who said he was the best DJ golfer he knew. Is he lying? We love all sport, golf included. We have never met Marcus, however I play off an 18 handicap, this makes me a pretty average golfer really, but I love the game. so If Marcus wants a challenge we are up for a competition! Our job has meant that we get to fly around the globe and have been lucky enough to play on some of the worlds best tracks - The Royal Melbourne in Australia, North Berwick and Archerfield courses in scotland and Bintan Indonesia to name a few. We are currently sponsored by Catmandoo Golf that make some great clothing for us to wear on tour.

and what’s on the cards when you play a rooftop, pool-side gig in Dubai, probably your first open air gig out here? Well, we always like to look at a situation and play music that helps to drive the party. We perform on 4 decks and put on a good show with some tricks and occasionally mixing 3 or even 4 records at one time.

Musically you will hear a varied mixture of house, bass, electro, breakbeat and tech house. We worship the groove, and our sound always has a funk element added hip sway. you will also hear us playing some classic Plump records from back in the day, they never fail to get the crowd jumping.

One of our favourite Middle East DJs and promoters, Beirut’s Jade heads to 360 on March 28 for his audio tonic debut…

Page 37: Infusion # 220: March 23-April 6 '14

You’re doing one of the few gigs in Dubai you’ve not done before in the city – audio tonic at 360. What can we expect? Thanks for having me, 360 is definitely one my favorite venues in Dubai in terms of location and musical direction. I’m looking forward to this gig.

You’re also doing a gig swap with audio tonic in Beirut – what made you get in touch with them? and what do you expect from their set? We’ve been playing Raxon’s sound for a while in our parties and we invited him to play for us several times, the feedback was always great. audio tonic has been delivering quality releases that I often play too. Moreover there is a big similarity between the sound of C U NXT sAT and audio tonic, so it was only normal for us to approach the guys. I’m sure the night with Mr Mr will be a blast.

How would you describe the club scene in Beirut at the moment? Driven by ego.

and how damaging was the cancellation of Creamfields Beirut to the club scene? honestly, the real damage was on the people who worked hard to bring the festival to town…

Page 38: Infusion # 220: March 23-April 6 '14

You’re always pushing the underground and alternative scene – who are the up-coming Djs and bands you’re interested in? On my playlist there’s always James Blake, Alt-J, Django Django, DJ Andy smith, Nicolas Jaar, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Broken Bells and Electric Wire hustle.

there are a number of lebanese DJs in Dubai – who are your favorites? honestly, all the Lebanese DJs in Dubai that I know of are friends of mine and I’m very glad that they’re all pretty busy and active.

and which city would you rather promote in if you had the choice, Dubai or Beirut? If I had the choice, I wouldn’t promote at all and would stick to making and playing my music.

You launched a weekly night a while ago, c u nxt Sat – what’s the ethos behind that? C U NXT sAT was the natural sequel to The Basement (the club I ran from 2005 - 2011), it’s a happier, a more diverse and a more (musically) mature alternative. The idea is to throw a weekly gathering on saturdays and to offer diverse experiences that go beyond the music. The brand was built around positivity, loyalty, and a guaranteed atmosphere.

Mostly used as a swear or curse (phonetically spell out the first letter of each word,so C U N Tuesday, ahem), there are now bands, films, and songs named see you Next Tuesday, while Dubai had its own see you Next Tuesday (then Thursday, then Friday) night several years ago at Alpha. And if you’re ever in Beirut (which you really, really should be at some point), head to C U NXT sAT for the best night out in town.

audio tonic feat. Jade, Friday March 28, 360, 4pm-3am, free entry all night, guestlist only 4-8pm via platinumlist.ae

Will the realUB40please stand upAfter a long and successful career, things turned sour pretty quickly for UB40, with bankruptcy, lawyers and the very odd state of having 2 rival UB40 bands to

contend with. We caught up with lead singer Ali Campbell, and fellow original members Micky and Astro, ahead of their gig at the Irish Village.

You’ve achieved an awful lot in your career - what is there left to tick off? Never been to mainland China. A new book, a movie, four fabulous world tours, albums etc.

the ‘other’ uB40 band were booked 6 weeks before your gig in Dubai - how do the 2 bands sit side by side, have lawyers got involved? I do believe our fans want to see and hear UB40 material sung by the original vocalists. yes, lawyers are involved.

and have you seen the other band in action, is competition in this instance a good or bad thing?

There really is no competition, check out Duncan, Robin and the old band inDubai on my twitter page @WeAreUB40.

the band were formed during a uK recession in the late 70s, and were named after a form of unemployment benefit. Do hardships make for better music do you think? I think it made us more determined to succeed. To be employed doing something we loved and paying our way.

the other uB40s’ album, Getting over the Storm, was recorded after much of the original band were declared bankrupt - how bad did things get? It couldn't have gotten any worse. Myself and Micky left because of the business managers, we knew

Page 41: Infusion # 220: March 23-April 6 '14

bankruptcies were on the horizon, we standvindicated.

Your average reader might struggle to understand that a band who sold 70 million albums would have financial trouble, what was at the root of that do you think? Very bad business management!

and presumably with a strong album behind you, things are looking a lot brighter? The new album is more or less complete, we're just adding Astro to some of the tunes, it's 100% reggae and we're very pleased with it. It'll be released soon, I know our fans will love it. We've just started our worldtour for 2014.

And finally, any message for your Dubai fans when you come out in april? Big love to everyone out there in Dubai. Come and party with us because we're coming to party with you. see you there.

RocK caMP FOR GIRLs

sORTED FOR eS anD WHIZZ – BEZ TO sTAND FOR PARLIAMENT

“My music is so much bigger than me, and what I am”

And so’s that hat Pharrell…

FROM PATTI sMITh to PJ harvey, the rock world has been littered with amazing front women. And the returning Rock camp for Girls is looking to find the next set of female rockers, right here in Dubai. A not-for-profit 5 day course run by experienced musicians including Fatiniza and Noush Like sploosh, it’s open to all girls aged 8-18 years old and runs from 9am-2pm at the Tone Town studios in Al Quoz. For more information, contact Zahra soar on 055 935 9982 or head to facebook.com/rockcampforgirlsuae

Without a doubt, our favourite music story of the year: it’s been announced that Happy Mondays star Bez has plans to stand at the next general election. The 49 year old wants to run on a platform of redistributing wealth, tackling cancer and dementia and putting an end to all war, and generally plans to ‘stir things up.’ “I’ve been saying we need a revolution, and there’s no good shouting about it when you’re not actually doing anything,’ he continued. “If you want to do something about things you’ve got to get into the corridors of power and take them on.” he’s got our vote already.

Album Reviews...

WhILE METRONOMy’s last album, their breakthrough The English Riviera, was a hipster’s wet dream of stripped back indie ethics, 80s drum machines and dance floor fillers (notably ‘The Bay’), their follow up is more of the same, only a lot less. Essentially, Love Letters is a concept album about why no one writes love letters any more, but ironically sounds like a band that have fallen out of love with a good tune. On ‘Love Letters’ and ‘I’m Aquarius’ their Motown and twee 60s melodies work well, demonstrating the band haven’t entirely cut loose their pop hooks. But the rest is largely forgettable, with Joseph Mount’s falsetto beginning to grate by the meandering track 3, ‘Monstrous.’ An album packed full of insipid jams – hello ‘Month of sundays’ and ‘Reservoir’ – makes this something only true fans will love, while the rest should pick and choose the highlights.

tenSnaKe – GloW Nu-Disco/House I soundcloud.com/tensnake Nu-Disco and Deep house are the big club sounds at the moment, showcasing the poppier end of the dance music spectrum. so it makes sense for Virgin to push German DJ and producer Tensnake as the genre’s poster child of the scene – he’s got a big track to his name (2010’s ‘Coma Cat’), and serious underground credibility. But his major label debut sounds over-polished in comparison. Only a few tracks - opener ‘First song,’ a hazy M83 style soundscape, lead single ‘ see Right Through’ and ‘58BPM’ - really stand up to his previous work. The rest is too poppy, too sanitized, too clean cut, and with all but one track clocking in at less than 6 minutes, this is dance music aimed at the masses (and those with short attention spans at that). A bigger label doesn’t necessarily mean better, hopefully a lesson Tensnake learns for his follow up.

BoxtoneS – In tHe PocKet oF cloWnS Indie/Rock www.boxtonesband.comBeing a full time band in Dubai isn’t always the easiest. While their Uk counterparts might be touring the city’s backstreet bars in a haze of meow meow, groupies and proper live music fans, the UAE’s bands have to fight for their right to play and party. Which makes The Boxtones success up to date all the more impressive, multi-tasking as a corporate band for hire by day, and a riotous rock band by night. And now comes their debut 9 track album, another feather in their cap. ‘When All Is said And Done’ and ‘Plug Me Into you’ is a powerful opening, with their rock credentials shining through thanks to rampaging guitar work and larynx-busting vocals. And it’s when the band are at full throttle that they sound their most fluent, with ‘Run’ and ‘Circusarium’ the driving pillars in the middle of the album. While some of their slower material doesn’t have quite the same momentum and impact, album closer ‘Identity Crisis’ is a multi-harmony powerhouse that could easily have sat on one of the later Oasis albums.

SOL RepubLic DEckThere are no shortage of hand held speakers these days, which makes it harder for brands to stand out, a challenge that the Deck meets head on. Not content with providing a punchy, clear sound with a bolshy bottom end, they’ve loaded the sol Republic and Motorola unit with loads of features, including the ability to stream using either Bluetooth or NFC over a huge range of 300 feet. If you get competitive about who has control of the music, they’ve created a heist mode, whereby up to 5 paired devices can battle it out for the beats. And, you can daisy chain the Decks together, so that you create a mobile soundsystem that will quickly get things moving. Design wise, it’s easy and intuitive to set up, and thanks to its slim design, is highly portable meaning you can set up with little difficulty. It also doubles up as a hands free speakerphone for your mobile, and comes with 10 hours of battery life. There are better sounding speakers out there, and cheaper ones, but none offer the innovative range of options as the Deck, making it a very good package.

one thing you might not know about me is… DK: I was on This Is your Life [a Uk TV programme]. My Uncle was a boxing commentator and journalist on ITV and they did a show on him. Jt: I’m an Engineer in my day job building anything from hospitals, hotels to airports.

My worst job was… DK: Working on a building site at heathrow and I was in a 6ft hole emptying water from a burst sewage pipe... Jt: I have not really had one to be fair, I’ve always tried to make the best of what I was doing, but tying chickens in a Butchers shop wasn’t that great.

My favourite record is… DK: This is too difficult too answer as there are so many. House would be ‘strings Of Life’, non house track would be stevie Wonder ‘Do I Do’.Jt: Wow too hard, Ashford & simpson, ‘Bourgie Bourgie.’

DJing is much like… DK: sex. Jt: Trying to think of an analogy for Djing, some would be cheesy and some would be cool.

I’m really proud of… DK: My friends! Jt: My ace little lads.

Biggest DJ achievement to date… DK: Is warming up for John Morales at the recent sunstroke Terrace Party and touring Bosnia with speed Queen. We did a couple of crazy gigs then donated all the money and threw a party for a home for disabled children. Great to give something back. Jt: Becoming Musthavesoul resident and building up the Cuts Above radio show with Danny kwang.

My guiltiest pleasure is… DK: Women’s shoes (I look after Jimmy Choo for my day job). Jt: “Don’t stop Me Now” by Queen.

If I could DJ in any decade it would be… DK: The 70s/80s, studio 54 through to Paradise Garage.Jt: The late 80s in Manchester, and the break of the house scene.

If I could go back to back with any DJ it would be… DK: Danny krivit or John Morales.Jt: Too many to try and pick, but Rahaan would defo be up there.

I’m not a politician… DK: But everyone needs to turn to their right and give that person a cuddle...Jt: I’d give it a try.

the secret to being a good musician is… The dedication to practice punctually while keeping an open-minded attitude towards learning from other musicians, having fun and enjoying music on stage on top of that. our music is… Our own music. The tunes we’re currently working on are heavily influenced by the likes of John Mayer and stereophonics. Playing covers… Gives us the opportunity to explore different genres of music as we are performing songs from standard jazz to contemporary pop, and from classic rock to electro-dance and progressive house music. the one song we couldn’t cover is… ‘Gangnam Style!’ Although we love korean cuisine, the band found it hilarious trying to emulate the right korean accent, but we managed to sing it in an English-translated form though. our best gig was… The early Friday morning performance at the Beat Diabetes Walk 2013 sponsored by Landmark Group at Zabeel Park in Dubai with almost 20,000 people there. our worst gig was… So far none, fingers crossed that it will not be happening anytime soon. our guilty musical pleasure is… Covering ‘hotel California’ and ‘sweet Child of Mine’. Almost all bands on the planet have rendered these hits more than a million times, in both good and bad versions. These songs need a break too. the one act we’d love to see in Dubai would be… Dave Matthews Band. Band motto? Long Live the Musos.

Night Shift, The Huddle, Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30pm-2am.

An established force on the live music scene, the Boxtones reveal the influences behind their new album, In The Pocket Of Clowns

Behind the

Boxtones

Page 75: Infusion # 220: March 23-April 6 '14

GILL TIERNEY:Dave Grohl has always been an inspiration for me – Nirvana, Foo Fighters, QOTsA, Them Crooked Vultures, Tenacious D. The guy’s a workaholic and just goes to show there’s

no substitute for hard work. The covers

we’ve played of Foo Fighters, QOTsA and Tenacious D tend to go down best

at our Armed Forces shows

which are mental!

LOUISE PEEL:I absolutely love Basement Jaxx’s ‘Good Luck’. It’s an energetic song and it always gets me wired when I hear it. We do play it and unlike most songs we learn, I still enjoy playing it. That’s unusual, few songs with stand that test. When I hear the first few chords I cant wait to get my teeth in to the vocals. It has a lot of vocal attitude. I also love Erykah Badu. As a vocalist she’s

a gymnast and as a lyricist her words are inspiring and resonate a lot of truth about human nature. That’s about as deep as I’ll get at this time in the morning.

PATRICK THIBAULT:When I first picked up the bass to join a punk band, I was given a bunch of Rancid tapes and sent on my way. you can probably hear Matt Freeman’s scales-based fills on the chorus of our single, reminiscent of his opening line in “Rejected”. Paul simonon from the clash has been a huge influence as well, if not bigger. I’d like to think that my tone on our track 'Identity Crisis' might remind a few of “London Calling”. But I do carry a bit of his stage charisma as well, his stance and allure were also quite inspiring as a young musician, and the scars left by

that hero worship still can be seen today.

WILL THE HAMMER JANSSEN:

starting at a young age, I

was introduced to classical music

as I took piano lessons. Growing up and studying the big names like Beethoven, Chopin, Bach and Mozart, I learned to adapt to their styles and later in life apply their tutoring to original metal and rock bands, past and present. It wasn’t until the 2000s when I got into writing, recording, performing and touring with metal bands across Canada, strictly listening to metal bands with sub-genres ranging from progressive, death, doom and melodic power metal. If I had to narrow it down to one band, with the strongest influence on my responsibilities as being the ‘key master’ of The Boxtones, I would have to go with swedish progressive metal monsters, opeth. Founder, singer, guitarist and songwriter of Opeth, Mikael Åkerfeldt has moved me through music with every track, every album and every live performance. Ranging from acoustic guitar to hard

chugging riffs, haunting keyboard accompaniment and strong dynamic shifts in each song, their music, combined with clean vocals and death growls makes this band my strongest influence to date. since joining The Boxtones 2 years ago, I have learned to open my ears and allow more than just metal into my iTunes library and accept other amazing artists from The Uk such as Biffy Clyro (which we cover, “The Captain” and “Many of horror”) and Muse (“Uprising” is next on the list to re-learn for pure pleasure). Both great acts and hope to one day see they live in concert (or better yet, support them at a festival).

Weird News...ThERE’s LOsING ThE PLOT, and then there’s joining a search party to look for yourself for 12 hours. A tourist group in Iceland made a pit stop, where the woman in question changed into some fresh clothes, with her busmates failing to recognize her. When word was then put around that one of the passengers was missing, she failed to recognize the description of herself, and joined the 50 strong search team until the penny finally dropped at 3am and one of her group members recognized her. We can only imagine her name was Mrs Bean.

LOsT ThE Plot

It was all over for charlie, a Maltese terrier, after he accidently drank radiator fluid, and suffered from ethylene glycol poisoning. But one quick thinking vet realized that alcohol would neutralize the effects, and got Charlie an Iv drip of vodka. And 48 hours later, he was drunk, but back to full health.

We’ve had all sorts of road closures in Dubai, but as far as we’re aware the RTA hasn’t closed a busy road to search for a man’s severed penis. This happened in Middlesbrough on the A66 when a 40 year old man was discovered in distress with wounds to his groin area, with police searching for his missing John Bobbit.

Managed by café Mambo resident pete gooding, rich and hoyte are Nat Rich (right) and Yaina Hoyte (left), an in-demand female dJ duo currently based in dubai with grand designs on ibiza this summer

How would you describe your style? Hoyte: We don’t actually have a duo style yet, it’s one of the things we have been looking into since coming to Dubai. I like to dress quite quirky normally, I like a bit of miss match and retro 80s stuff.Rich: yeah we don’t have a style yet but we are open to stylists and brands wanting to dress us so feel free to get in touch!

and where do you get a lot of your clothes from, any Dubai gems? We are currently spending most of our time in West LA Boutique as they have a variety of styles so we can usually find something in there that works for both of us.

You must see a lot of different fashions and styles working in clubs – any that have made you laugh? Hoyte: I once saw a guy wearing just a bright green mankini and flipflops! He was on a Stag do, poor bloke...Rich: I used to work on the door at many London clubs and women often used to try and wear UGGs and denim hot pants to go clubbing in the West End of London. They didn’t really understand the words “Dress Smart” on the flyer.

How have you noticed that fashion differs from back home?Hoyte: I have actually noticed that a lot of people here like to look glamorous in heels and make up as opposed to casual.Rich: yea, they do love a pair of heels and a designer handbag over here. What have been your biggest fashion disasters? Hoyte: No disasters only experiences :) Rich: Well, to be honest I have no style in general so I go with wearing black a lot. Can’t really go that wrong with black I don’t think.

and if your house was burning down, what item of clothing would you rescue? Hoyte: My onesie, if I’m at home in England standing outside a burning house, it’s probably going to be cold! Rich: hahaha, I don’t actually have one item that I would say I’d risk heading back in to a burning building for so I think I’d rather save the laptop with our music on, and I’d also be grabbing the decks.

Reboots are all the rage. From Robocop to spiderman (again), we’re constantly updating the past, bringing a fresh new twist to proceedings.

And there have been few better reboots in recent time than the Puma Disc, a trainer that originally debuted back in 1991, 3 years before Justin Beiber was even a glint in his Daddy’s eye.

Featuring a breathable mesh upper, a plastic cage and a super lightweight FassFoam midsole, these laceless trainers have been stylishly updated, making them super light and functional. And thanks to the futuristic look, and the retro heritage, they’re highly collectible, with a range of different colour combinations and looks. But our favourite are the newly released ss14 pair, this ultra-modern black and gold pair.

Monkey Out...

DINOsAUR DJs

Analog Room, Electric Days, house of Afrika, audio tonic, Clique, Groove on the Grass, Globalfunk, Bassworx, Reggae Beach Fest, superheroes, Boombox and Warehouse Dubai and loads more – all have one thing in common. They’re pushing things forward, doing something fresh and different.

Which is why the Monkey was pleased to see the return of Deep Nights, who were once the power house in Dubai, slugging it out with Peppermint for top dog rights in the city.

They’re now back, hosting weekly nights at supperclub, which is surely a sign that supperclub are struggling with their original concept. But it seems that in the intervening years off, Deep have learnt nothing/nada/zilch/sweet FA from the new kids in town.

Not only did they book Tom Novy, a DJ who’s been off the clubbing radar longer than flight Mh370, they’ve just signed up Timo Maas, less than a month after he last played in the city. Oh, yeah, and they’re ChARGING Dhs295 FOR ENTRy. WTF? Entry to Guantanamo Bay is cheaper, and more enjoyable – at least they get to listen to Metallica.
