And a whole heap more, too numerous to mention on this page.

Shibuya feat. youSef @ The BasemenT If you know your music and love somewhere a little more underground (literally) then The Basement at the Boutique 7 hotel in Tecom is the worst kept secret in the City. and now-monthly party shibuya had a big pre-event buzz that most promoters would sell their fake Facebook profiles for. Not only was the place close to bursting before midnight but mrmr and marko smokingroove playing B2B worked like a dream as they had the crowd in their hands. Yousef arrived at 1am and promptly destroyed the place. If Carlsberg made DJs it would be Yousef’s face staring out at you: he’s always consistent, always delivers, loves his job and annoyingly is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in the industry as well. The close to capacity crowd lapped up the house beats right until the last hi-hat echoed of the beefed up Void soundsystem. – Stephen Day

Page 17: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

Mixologist Jonny Thornhill opened up proceedings, firing out a mix of tropical, jazz-influenced Chicago house beats on two floor-to-ceiling stacks of Funktion One speakers. In fact it was hard to keep up with the different genres as he was pretty much smashing them all, my favourite tune from him had to be ‘Deep in the bowels of house’ track by ‘MCDE’ which set the tone for the night. Next up was ‘Trus Me, label owner of Prime Numbers and the producer of soul edged house and techno tracks who has enjoyed world wide success. he opened his set with the stomping techno track ‘I Want You’ by Alan Fitzpatrick and from then on in it was pumping techno beats which got heavier as the night went on. The australian headliner went on playing rolling techno beats until I heard a sneaky New Order ‘Blue Monday’ remix which the crowd went in to a frenzy. In the last 45 minutes he switched it up to his funky soulful collection of house music that I’m told he is best known for and went down really well, closing on the stripped back Matthew Herbert edit of Moloko’s ‘Sing It Back’ for a crowd sing-a-long. Big ups to the Dust crew for keeping their bookings fresh as always. – FInlay Lefox

An official part of the Dubai Food Festival, there will be a host of food trucks across both nights, while there will also be a host of live bands, DJs and art performances from local and international stars. After years of trying, ninja Tune star and eclectic champion Mr Scruff is finally confirmed to play in Dubai at zero Gravity on Friday February 27. Known for his epic sets and his dedication to a good soundsystem – as well as being more than a bit partial to a good brew – he’ll be spanning everything from 50s rock and roll to disco/house/hip hop and everything in between. Known for his long sets, we recommend getting down early to check one of the most original DJs around do his thing for the first time in the region.

One of the longest running house music labels in the business, house party starters hed Kandi are back in DXB after a long break, taking up residence at Nasimi starting on Friday February 20. We take a look back at the label’s 16 year history…

Hed HigH

hed Kandi might conjure up images of instagram-ready beach parties, funky house and a cast of clubbers so good looking they make the Friends lot look like Goblins. But hed Kandi actually first started life in 1999 as a compilation record label at Jazz FM, even broadcasting their mix of funky house, chill out and guest interviews on the station’s FM channel for 3 years. hed Kandi and Jazz FM: nice. The musical marriage worked though as the label quickly picked up traction, with label head Mark Doyle, no stranger to Dubai himself, quickly establishing the brand’s unique look and feel, thanks in part to the distinctive artwork of Jason Brooks. Their events got ever more popular, with a residency at el Divino in ibiza leading to regular events at Pacha in London at the start of the millennium. hed Kandi now stage more than 500 events annually, making it one of the busiest global nightlife companies, with residencies in key cities and areas like Amsterdam, ibiza, nikki Beach Miami, Koh Samui and more. in 2006, Ministry of Sound swooped in to buy hed Kandi, and with sales of over 5 million CDs, plus their super-popular radio show syndicated around the world, it’s not hard to see why. And now the brand are back in Dubai for their bi-monthly party, dropping quality house goodness on nasimi beach on Friday February 20. Starting off with Balearic beats at sunset, the fun really starts at sunset as the Masquerade theme kicks off and the hed Kandi entertainers come out to play. There will

Page 35: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

be dancers, stilt walkers and fire eaters on entertainment duty throughout the night, while nasimi will get an all singing and dancing light and sound boost for the event, meaning the night will go off with a bang. To celebrate their return, the party kicks off from 4pm on Friday February 20, and entry is free for the first 200 clubbers, and all drinks are half price for the first two hours.

A quick word with… dAmiAn LAzArusOne of the most interesting characters in dance music, Damian Lazarus not only heads up cult label Crosstown rebels, but has also just launched his live venture, Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons. Stu todd caught up with him ahead of his Provocateur gig to talk beards, emotional baggage and his band…

how was the recent Day zero event in Mexico?Day Zero was once again an incredible event full of music, performance and joy. Thousands of party people from all over the world joined us to celebrate life and love and to reconnect with the ancient Mayan culture and ideas.

how important is the spiritual aspect of the festival to you?i feel it is important to create something more than simply a dance floor for people to go mental on. in an ideal world people would feel comfortable in the space to really let go of all their baggage, allow the music to move them and to seek and find something stronger, something more powerful in the experience.

When did this become the case or have you always been a spiritual person?

Page 39: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

Ever since i began growing the beard. Or maybe some time before then… maybe in a past life?

how did your debut of Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons at Day zero go?it was mad. it was the first time i performed with my new band, in fact the first time i ever performed with any band. We learnt a lot from this first show and we are working on a few things now but for a debut performance it was pretty epic. i have some incredible musicians working with me on this project and we are very excited to begin touring this spring.

Can you tell us a little more about the hardware set up, your role and the influences involved in the sound?

You’ll have to wait until you see but i can tell you this is not simply a DJ standing in front of a laptop!

What can we expect from your new album due to drop this year? Some beauty, some mystical songs, some heavy and trippy music for the heart and soul.

What do you have coming up on Crosstown Rebels?new album projects from Skream, Francesca

Lombardo, Aphrohead and a couple more things about to be announced. Plus some killer new singles coming on both Crosstown and rebellion

from a number of amazing artists.

Who should we be looking out for in 2015?i guess Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons would be high

on the list; there are some new artists coming through also like Squire, Azimute and David Pher.

What can we expect from your upcoming set at Provocateur in Dubai?A night of twisted, mystical, magical music.

Damian Lazarus plays Provocateur on Friday February 13, Four Seasons Hotel

The 2 day Red Fest returns to Dubai this year, and brings with it pop heavy hitters like The Script, Kiesza and iggy Azalea, as well as infusion favourites like Gorgon City, Wilkinson and Bastille who we take a closer look at…

In The Red

Wilkinson – Thursday 12Like Sigma and rudimental, Wilkinson is another chart-friendly Drum and Bass act who’s had several Top 40 hits including the piano/vocal smasher ‘Afterglow.’ With support from big names like Annie Mac and MistaJam, as well as ram records’ Andy C, he’s become a leading name in the scene, making 170BPM accessible to the masses.

Page 43: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

GorGon CiTy – Friday 13 Gorgon City’s Kye Gibbon and Matt robson-Scott were already successful music makers in their own right as Foamo and rack'n'ruin, but when the north London duo came together as Gorgon City, they hit the charts big time with their bass-friendly house-meets-Garage formula. Club anthem ‘ready For Your Love’ feat. MnEK hit the number 4 spot, while other collaborations from their Sirens album with Jennifer hudson and Clean Bandit also lodged in the Top 40. it all came together last summer when the band became mainstays on radio playlists and in clubs around the world, making Gorgon a mainstream but very credible outfit.

BasTille – Friday 13You know you’re onto a good thing when your debut album goes to number 1 straight after release, winning the 4 piece band 4 Brit Awards in the process. To date, the London indie/rock band have sold an impressive 5 million records in the US, and 2.5 million in the UK, making them one of the biggest bands of the last few

years. Musically, Bastille are a mix of friendly electronics, heart on their sleeve vocals from lead singer Dan Smith and indie-pop classics like ‘Pompeii’ and ‘Bad Blood.’

reeBok sTaGe reebok have added a second stage to proceedings with their ViP balcony, pulling together a quality line up of local DJ talent (Kristian Valdini and Andy Swift), local live bands (Physical Graffiti and Abbo) and acclaimed hip hop/funk DJ Trevor nelson. Get those Pumps primed!

Brunches aren’t just about collapsing at 5pm after eating and drinking your own body weight. There are some excellent party brunches out there, so with bellies at the ready and forks in hand, we tested out 5 of the best…

The city’s best party brunches

Saturday Brunch @ Pizza Express Brunch essentials: good food, good drinks and enough atmosphere to keep you entertained for 4 hours. The Jazz @ Pizza Express Saturday brunch has all them in spades, and comes in at outrageously good value, Dhs169 per person. The atmosphere comes courtesy of the live duo who work their way around 40 years of classics including Santana, Duffy and Steve Miller Band covers. And come 3pm, there was a dancefloor as they both strutted out into the audience on live sax and guitar respectively. Although this being a family friendly brunch, the dance moves were more Birdy Song than Twerkin. The food was good, without ever being amazing – the pizzas were the stand out, while you're also served salads,

Page 47: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

pasta dishes and a trio of deserts to your table. The price and the free-flowing drinks, including a very solid red wine, Prosecco, mojitos and more, combined with the excellent service meant you quickly got into the mood. Plus, there's also face painting, balloon tricks and pizza making to keep the kids occupied while you get on and do grown up things like steal their pizza. Excellent value and more fun than you can shake a sausage dog balloon at.

Family Brunch @ Pizza Express, Movenpick Hotel, JLT, 12-4pm, Dhs169 with alcohol, every Saturday

Saturday Brunch at Blue Marlin Blue Marlin are known for their pumping Friday beach parties but the Saturday Brunch is a much more relaxed affair. We love Blue Marlin with it's cool beachy vibe, yummy food and music that makes you want to move. You're instantly transported to beautiful ibiza. The 265AED Brunch has 2 afternoon restaurant sittings, either 1-3pm or 3.30-5.30pm which makes it perfect for those who've been partying the night before. You also have the Terrace and Beach Brunch option from 2-4pm for 295AED and or the brunch Daddy, the Moet ice imperial Brunch for 550AED. The Blue Marlin Chefs takes over the terrace on live cooking stations with a mixture of Mediterranean dishes, tempting meats, some sushi and something for the sweet tooth. hightlights being the Beef Carpaccio (we ordered about 5 plates), ribs, squid and a mixture of wok fried

Page 48: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

greens. Factor in the free-flowing Spanish Sangria and you have an excellent afternoon session infront of you... They also have beach games to entertain the brave and groovy vibes by the resident DJ, Frederick Stone. Make sure you bring your dancing shoes as by 6pm you'll be on the dance floor shaking off all those extra calories you just consumed.

Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, Golden Tulip, Ghantoot, every Satuday 1-5.30pm. Dhs249 (restaurant brunch), Dhs295 (terrace and beach brunch), Dhs550 (bubbly brunch).www.bluemarlinibiza-uae.com, [email protected] (056 113 3400).

Sunset Brunch, Pure Sky Lounge, hilton, JBRPure Sky Lounge is the intimate brunch, a restaurant of normal proportions for those who declare themselves past their 20-heads-a-table Friday carnage phase. More glamour, less clamour – not least from the 35th-floor terrace views from hilton’s lesser-explored JBr tower. To up the sophistication, four well-considered courses

Page 49: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

of multiple, modest dishes and sharing platters each comes and goes in a stream amid a free flow of a limited beverage selection and a wash of deep house beats. The Prosecco on offer complements the scallop slices and grilled sea bass

chunks, while the Sangria suited the amusing baked cheese-filled mini-pumpkins, veal meatballs, the tender beef chunks, further Wagyu beef and a filling, shredded noodle and vegetable dish. A light dessert led by ice cream and fruit settles the matter. With waiters and a sous chef keen to chat, it is a venue that knows it has done something right and has a niche to fill: an evening Marina brunch outside, balancing refinement and limit with sufficient variety, date-night subtleties with the social ambience for friend groups. Sunset Brunch @ Pure Sky Lounge, Hilton, JBR, 5:30-9:30pm, Dhs375 with alcohol, every Friday

Story Rooftop We took a trip down to Story’s Thursday night brunch after a rather heavy week at work. And anyone who thinks it’s just a bar/club that does food, needs to keep reading… The minute you walk in you’re greeted like an old mate they haven’t seen for ages, it’s very nice, warm and attentive. We were walked through the venue and shown to a great spot outside close enough to the DJ but far enough from the after work ‘Let’s get blotto’ crowds that descend across town every Thursday. We were then offered a decent white wine before being walked through the modest, but tasty, buffet selection. Empanadas, fresh guacamole, ceviche and some nice cuts of steak grilled to your liking by the chatty chef. With generous servings of refilled wine and the DJ dropping after work friendly house tracks including some of our recent favourites, the Story brunch is an excellent place to wind down after a long week, or wind up ahead of a long weekend.

Go Baby Go @ Sho Cho After creating a nightlife brand that packed in the punters week in, week out, the Electric Days team turned their hand to the art of brunch and came up with Go Baby Go. The Friday/Saturday party at Sho Cho not only offers an amazing selection of Japanese delicacies including the obvious like sushi, sashimi, dim sum and teriyaki, but does so with really good value – Dhs250 for brunch and 5 drinks, or Dhs175 with soft drinks. Factor in the blissful terrace overlooking Dubai Marine Beach resort's mini beach and the ebbing Arabian Sea, and setting afternoon sun and you have a winning combination. Being an Electric Days creation, the party doesn't stop there, however, as a rotating cast including Jacob Bailey, Matthew Charles, Amy Wells, Miss P.M and more are on hand to liven up proceedings and get the dancefloor going.

Music News...New PioNeeR player

The viNyl froNtier

Pioneer’s DJ innovations keep coming, this time with the new XDJ-RX all in one player. featuring a large 7” screen displaying full waveforms, two decks and a two channel mixer, the XDJ-rX borrows a lot of features from the Nexus range including the full size CDJ platters, pad control with the Loop slice, UsB recording, while it loads rekordbox tracks directly from the UsB key. The XDJ-rX is out in March, costing $1499.

further proof that the vinyl revival is still kicking comes with the news Tomorrowland have added a vinyl only stage to their huge Belgian festival this year, with Cocoon boss Sven vath heading up proceedings. the festival have also announced their first act as the national orchestra of Belgium, perhaps signaling their intent to change up the script with this year’s line up.

album Reviews...

Break UP are a rich source of material for bands and artists, releasing a rich vein of emotions including revenge, envy, sadness and even happiness. and Bjork has channeled her break up with american artist Matthew Barney into her 9th album, at once a stark but universal heartbreak album that is one of her best in recent memory. opener ‘stonemilker’ is a sumptuous, string-laden waltz with stunning vocals, while ‘Lionsong’ is more of the same, but with Flying Lotus style beats underpinning it. and with Venezuelan producer arca (behind kanye West’s Yeezus and Fka Twigs eP2), that’s not surprising. From there, the album gets weirder, and more challenging – ‘Black Lake’ is a stuttered, bass-rolling 10 minute epic, while ‘Family’ is a beatless, harmonized, topsy turvy affair that wouldn’t be out of place on a modern day opera score. But there’s light within the dark moments, and plenty of heart-warming melodies among the broken beats, making it a very modern – and uniquely Bjork – break up album.

Think FrenCh hoUse and electro, and you’ll no doubt think Daft Punk and Justice. But there was another big name, first in 1997, and again in 2004, who released seminal albums that brought together 70s funk, side-chained electro and glorious synths. That name was etienne De Crecy, and thanks to his albums super Discount 1 and 2, he became an important part of the french house revolution. now back, he’s teamed up with some killer vocalists, including De La soul’s Pos and Dave, Baxter Dury and alex Gopher, and created another funk-filled electro journey. ‘WTF’ is a tongue-in-cheek stab at pop-house fuelled by a killer bassline, ‘hashtag My ass’ is another loaded track with a catchy chorus and album highlight ‘Love’ is a brilliant slice of mid-tempo squelch. Funky, fresh and full of joy de vivre, this is a welcome update on the French house and electro at its finest.

We get up close and personal with one of the Societe owners, and their new resident DJ

one thing you might not know about me is... i’m learning to skydive at the moment.

My worst ever job was… working in an alloy factory for a day. it was so bad i didn’t go back.

Page 67: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

DJing is much like… Being a chef. You have to carefully select all the ingredients and add them individuality at just the right time. if you use the wrong ingredient you will spoil the whole dish and you have to start again.

Dubai’s clubbing scene is… eclectic. it has everything you could ever want. People just need to stop posing so much and enjoy the music.

I’m really proud of… Creating the concept of societe and being one of the owners.

What track could you drop in every set?house of Pain ‘Jump around’, everyone goes crazy for it or ‘summer of 69’ by Bryan adams - as soon as the intro starts everyone starts playing air guitar.

I can’t live without… My dog Murphy…. He is the best thing in my life.

My biggest DJ achievement to date is… i only DJ for societe so it would be getting a round of applause at 3am when the music stops and the crowd is chanting for one more song. That’s a very cool feeling that people actually care about the music

What is your guiltiest pleasure?Manchester United. i have followed them since i was a boy. i even moved to Manchester to support them for several years. Don’t try and contact me during a game…

if you could DJ in any decade which would it be… The 00s, just before everything went to computers and CDs were the method of mixing. there were so many big tunes…

if i could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be…DJ spoony from the Dream team. only because he used to be a warm up DJ in one of the first clubs i managed and i still remember making him play YMCa and him hating me for it.

I’m not a politician but… if i was i don’t think i would last too long when they started digging the dirt on me…

Club deprived Dubai to get another venue

UAE DJ launches own record label as no one will put out his own rubbish tracks

There was an audible sigh of relief amongst Dubai’s legions of clubbers as a new venue was finally opened, a horrifying 2 weeks after the previous launch. The new club manager, Mr Rich T. Wat said: ‘We were stunned to find there was a period with no new club openings, so we quickly pulled together a totally made up concept, hired the loudest PR team in town, started 27 fake Facebook profiles of ‘promoters’ and employed a DJ who can play Russian/Bollywood/EDM/Urban and deep house, so we’ve got most bases covered.’ The club boasts that it will re-define clubbing in the city, thanks to its unique, never seen before, combination of music, drinks, dancefloor and people, while it promises several high profile appearances from Acorn and David Gwetta.

“To alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems”

Thus speaks the wisest man we know, Homer Simpson.

How to get your alcohol license

Page 77: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

If Homer had been based in the UAE – now there’s an amusing thought – he’d be like the rest of us: drinking in hotels and asking Marge to sort out his alcohol license on his behalf.

But it’s actually pretty easy to do, and you even get Dhs160 of free booze when you sign up.

Grab an application shop from any MMI outlet (there are 13, checkmmidubai.com/find_our_shops/ for your nearest). Complete the form, get it stamped by your employer and attach the following:• Passport, Residence Visa and Passport Photo (for you and your spouse)• Tenancy Contract or NOC from your landlord either: - labour Contract (issued by the Ministry of labour), or - Salary Certificate if you work in a Free Zone (issued by the Free Zone Authority)• Visit MMI to submit your application form and documents together with the AED 160 municipality fee• We will let you know the moment your licence is ready for collection • You’ll need to be non-Muslim and over 21 and have a salary of over Dhs3,000.

To renew your license, complete the application form and submit it with copies of your passport, residency visa, tenancy contract, expired liquor licence and AED 160. But if your employer and visa hasn’t changed no other documents will be required.

See, even Homer could do it...

CoolThis issue, we pit two of the best party break

practitioners in the world against each other ahead of their new Zero gravity monthly residency

KRAfTY KUTS A SKILLZWho’s the coolest person in your phone book?

Norman Cook. Otherwise known as the Fat Boy… An old

friend, and the first person to help kickstart my career – it’s

all his fault!

Just had a browse and found someone listed as “Dave DON’T ANSWER THIS,” I’m guessing he ain’t cool… Kurtis Blow. He’s gotta be the coolest dude in my phone.

What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep? 24 hours – but I am the king

of the disco nap, and can fall asleep standing up!

My body just switches off after 24hrs. I’m like an old iPhone.

Who’s got the coolest record collection?Mr Thing – a fantastic DJ from

london. An inspiration, and obsessed with records.

My dad. Closely followed by DJ shadow.

Who’s the Coolest Dj?

The magnificent Jazzy Jeff. what he lacks in turntable skills he more than makes up for in character. the cool award goes to tony Blackburn.

The Coolest Track:‘Signs’ by Snoop Dog and

Justin Timberlake. The Time – ‘Cool.’

Coolest scratch?

The Transformer scratch, invented by the legendary

Jazzy Jeff.

KRAfTY KUTS vS A SKILLZ

A draw: how on earth do you decide on who’s cooler when one’s been on Supermarket Sweep and the other got Mallet’d. Krafty Kuts and A Skillz are the new monthly residents at Zero Gravity, and will be playing on Thursday February 19.

Your best dance move is…

The wave is my signature move!

The Moonwalk… (l haven’t done it since I was 12 but I’m sure I could still do it).

What’s your best claim to fame?

I was on Supermarket Sweep! Timmy Mallet hit me on the head with his mallet.

It’s not big and it’s not clever but…

Not listening to people and butting in to conversations.

A whoopee cushion really is the ultimate ice breaker especially at an awkward family gathering.

What’s your answer to everything?

I will do that tomorrow – honest! Coffee.

What’s the best insult you could give each other? How big is your studio? Don’t worry, I don’t think anyone

noticed.

Coolest garage DJ in the world (apart from yourself, obviously)? Luck & Neat: Mark ronson.Artful Dodger: No contest, EZ.

Who's got the coolest record collection? luck & Neat: Jazzy Jeff is a Don!Artful Dodger: A lot of DJs have got great record collection but when Carl Cox wants to draw for a tune he can.

Coolest track ever made? Luck & Neat: I suppose we have got to say ‘With A Little Bit Of Luck’. That was our first chart track and was in the UK Top 10 Charts for 11 weeks, and sold nearly a million units. This track has done so much for us receiving the Mobo Award & UMA Award and enables us to travel all over the world spreading the UK garage sound to as many different places as we can. We have total appreciation for this each and every day.Artful Dodger: I should say an Artful dodger record like ‘Rewind’ or ‘Moving Too Fast’ but I'm not, I'm gonna go for ‘Woman Trouble’ because everyman has had some at some point in his life! Your best dance move is… Luck & Neat: this has got to be the ‘Migraine Skank’ by Gracious K, big track, big moves! Artful Dodger: I'm the best breakdancer you gave ever seen I will burn anyone on the dance floor…

What's your best claim to fame?Luck & Neat: Party in the Park, Hyde Park, London, 150,000 people, it was crazy! Artful Dodger: Headlining the dance stage at Glastonbury!

Page 82: Infusion # 241: Feb 8-Feb 22 2015

It's not big and clever but… Luck & Neat: Time keeping needs to be sometimes improved!Artful Dodger: But someone's gotta do it.

What's your answer to everything? Luck & Neat: really? Artful Dodger: I'm right!

What's the best insult you could give each other? Luck & Neat: Shut up, you’ll never be the man your mother is! Hahaha, only playing we have total love and respect for each other, Uk garage all the way!Artful Dodger: Your family tree is a cactus, everyone on it is a prick! looooooool, all healthy banter - mutual love and respect all the way!

The verdict: Strong game lads, strong game – evenly matched beat for beat, blow for blow, this is a high scoring draw.
