Concorso Italiano August 13 Monterey CA
In This Issue:
With so many great options of events to at-
tend this, the 100th Birthday year for our
favorite car marque, it was tough to chose
which to attend. I wandered down to
Concorso Italiano in Monterey California. The
location is the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch with
the cars parked on the beautiful grass. With
the famous race track right next door, I can
hear the sounds of vintage race cars running,
while wandering around the great variety of
Italian cars, all under a warm sun. It‟s a nice
way to spend a day.
Arriving early, gave me plenty of time to wan-
der, which I‟m used to doing on a golf course,
but usually looking for my lost ball. This time, the wandering rewarded me with finds of a different sort.
Numerous excellent examples of GTV6s and Alfetta GT cars, along with both Milanos and 164s. In amongst
these was an extremely rare (and extremely slow) was the Alfa 6 2.5 Ltr… 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel. The
only one known to be in the USA. One aspect of the powerplant is it was clearly a 4 cylinder with an addi-
tional 5th… seam and all, plus each cylinder has it‟s own head.

The Berlinas were well represented with a couple
older Giuliettas, including the dark blue one be-
longing to Bill Gillham from AROO . Bill‟s car won
the prestigious Arnaldo Pomodoro award for overall
beauty. There were also a number of fantastic
Giulia Super and Ti cars and looking outstanding as
usual was Michael Kay‟s cars right in the midst of
this gathering. Michael and his friend, Peter, had
driven down and used a new paint on, temporary
clear coat that protects against rock chips. It
worked great and peeled off prior to the show leaving no traces, and of course the fantastic
looking cars.
There were spiders of all types and years from a number of outstanding Giuliettas to Giulia
GTC, to Duettos, 2000‟s and 2600‟s and 70‟s through 90‟s spiders. The Montreals and Junior
Zs each numbered 4, and all looked great. They perched the Sprint Speciale cars on a slight
mound which played well with the unique body lines as well.
Other great rare cars were a couple Alfa 8cCompetizione, Jon Shirley‟s 8c2900B, Greg
Whitten‟s BiPosto P3, a ‟61 SZ, a „64 TZ, and a Boano bodied Alfa 1900.
In addition, there was a replica 6c3000 that was
stunning… albeit a little nicer than what the
original probably looked like. There was also an
artist named Greg Hildebrant creating a painting
of a hot almost naked woman and an Alfa
8c2900 with the title Beauty and the Beast. As
Alfisti, which is really the Beauty? Don‟t get me
wrong, I liked them both but the Alfa is the
Beauty. The model maker, Marshall Buck, had a

display booth and a wooden body mold for an 8c2900 he will be making. It
was all very cool.
There was also plenty of lesser cars like Ferrari, Fiat, Iso, Maserati, Lancia,
and Lamborghini. The gathering of Ferrari F40s was impressive as well as
the one off Ferrari SP1 from the factory‟s Special Projects division. Few
things in this world are as stunning as the lines of a Lamborghini Miura and
there were 3 (Red, Orange, and Silver) to enjoy.
The stage area rolled a
number of cars through
that had won awards and
much of the event was
emceed by Keith Martin.
If I could find a complaint,
it would be two small
things… though very nice,
the outhouse units were
often placed so they were
the backdrop in car pic-
tures, and secondly, there
really needs to be more
pre-WWII cars. With that
said, the weather was
outstanding, the location
great, and the cars were
fantastic. It was great to
go, and even better to
find some of our locals
like Eric Hawley, Jim
Simpson, Michael Kay,
Greg Whitten, and Rod
McNae wandering the
show as well.

Silver Bullets
I hope everybody enjoyed our daylong celebration of Alfa Romeo‟s 100th birthday, I know I had a good time and talked to a few people I had not
seen for awhile. I was surprised to see so many people at our 8am breakfast. The car show was good and I hear the drive to the Picnic area was
fun. I was in charge of getting the ice [a very large responsibility] so I missed the drive. The BBQ was great, we even had a chef flown in from
Kansas to work the grill, that would be Gordy Hyde‟s brother, and he did a great job. Fred Russell and his two daughters, Taylor and Madison
brought a super cake with an Alfa Logo, real cool stuff. The success of this event was made possible due to the good planning and execution of the
plan by Fred and his two daughters, thanks again to the Russell family. Another hi-light of the day were the three Silver Bullets, they would be
1987 spider Quadrifoglio‟s, silver of course. I suppose I‟m a little partial to that year and model. I would say they were identical but the Italians in
the factory never seen to put the radio antenna in the same place on any two cars. There were a lot of great Alfa at the party. Our club has its
share of really nice Alfa‟s, if it is possible to ever have your share!
I managed to get in my annual camping trip on the Olympic Peninsula. I stayed at Mora Campground and spent a few hours at Rialto Beach. With
some forethought, you can put a lot of stuff in a spider! The TWILIGHTERS are still overrunning Forks, which is very good for the Forks economy.
There are some great Alfa roads on the Peninsula, some are dead end roads and are great driving in both directions such as, Sol Duc Hot Springs
Road, Elwha Dam Road, The Hurricane Ridge Road, SR 112 and 113 and I must mention the East Beach Road that runs south out of the town of
Joyce, along the east end of Lake Crescent. This road has to be one of the great drives in the state. If you go just beyond Sekiu on SR112 and
take the Hoko-Ozette road you will have a great round trip to Lake Ozette. There is a nice lunch stop at the lake. It‟s nice to have two full days to
do these drives. With good planning you could have a nice lunch at the Lake Crescent lodge. I believe the Half Fast Lap of Washington will touch
on some of these good roads this fall.
I‟m only going to do one night of the Half Fast Lap this year as Elsie and I have vacation plans in the Southwest part of the country. I hope to see
some of you on September 18 at the start of this event, remember you can do one ,two or three days.
September 1 is our last Lapping day this year at PR, let‟s go out and support the Corsa Committee.
There is still enough summer left to meet on some BACKROADS... hope to see you there.
Ciao, Harry

Kirkland Concours d’Elegance Sept 12th
Date: Sunday - September 12, 2010
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Location: Carillon Point in Kirkland, WA
The setting is
stunning as usual,
along Lake Wash-
ington. This year
is especially fun
for us Alfisti with
Alfa Romeo being
one of the fea-
tured marques.
They should have
a few very nice
Alfas on display
for us including
the 8c2300 known as The Rimoldi. It was a car owned and enjoyed by
a true Alfista for 51 years who raised a family and went on vacations
with this car. Wouldn‟t that have been a good upbringing!
Saturday Secret: There is a new pre event known as the Vin d'Ele-
gance, being held Saturday, Sept.11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at several
Woodinville wineries open for wine tastings. Each "taster" will receive
one coupon good towards $5 off an adult general admission ticket to
the Concours the next day. There should be approximately 20 collec-
tor cars coming off their Tour d'Elegance, a three-day road trip
through the North Cascades, arriving in Woodinville around noon on
Saturday. Just a little something extra to enjoy!
Have you seen the new Lotus Evora yet?

Shannon Low, one of those exceptional Milano Verde drivers, will be
our host for the evening to point out the finer aspects of these excep-
tional cars. Park Place will be ready for us at 6:30 PM with pizza,
wine, & pop to keep the hunger pangs away.
We‟ll see you there for more Alfa Romeo discussions (I need to dis-
cuss A/C) and enjoy the evening with some fantastic sports cars in a
most appropriate venue.
September Club Meeting
Out for a Winter’s Drive...
Half Fast Lap of Washington Sept 18-20
Plan to meet us Saturday at the NW corner of Southcenter Mall just below the tall Westfield sign. We‟ll aim
for 8:15 AM with departure time at 8:30 AM. South end folks can meet us at Griot‟s new garage at 9
AM. (3333 So 38th Tacoma) At 11 AM, we‟re off to Morton for lunch, and Windy Ridge viewpoint at Mt.
St. Helens. We continue south to the Ape Caves area, (BRING A FLASHLIGHT) before landing for the
night at Lone Fir Resort.
Sunday will take us westbound to an old Grist Mill built in 1876, and then along the southern shore of the
Columbia River on Oregon Hwy 30. We cross back to Washington on a tiny car ferry. We‟ll drive through a
covered bridge, a wildlife preserve, a couple small towns and end the day at historic, and haunted Lake
Quinault Lodge.
Monday, we enjoy low tide at Ruby Beach, then a short walk in the Hoh Rain Forest. The herd of Roosevelt
Elk may be looking out for us… We‟ll have an Italian lunch in Port Angeles before stopping by a private car
collection in Sequim, then head for the Kingston Ferry for our return to the area.
The roads and scenery should be almost as good as the company we keep!

Volkswagen buys ITALDESIGN-Giugiaro… The design studio is
now part of the ever-expanding auto conglomerate. It will be run as
part of the Lamborghini division. The top management of the com-
pany, including founder/chairman Giorgetto Giugiaro and his son and
vice-president Fabrizio, remain in place. VW‟s relationship with IDG
dates back decades, when the elder Giugiaro penned the 1970 Volks-
wagen first generation Golf (Rabbit) and Scirocco. No word on if IDG
will continue working with outside clients or will now dedicate itself to
VW Group projects. There have been some great looking Alfas com-
ing from IDG over the years!
Pacific Raceways Lapping Day Sept 1st
We‟ve had a great season of track events, and still have a few dates
to go… but the last Pacific Raceway event this year will be Septem-
ber 1st. I hope you‟re signed up to run… or at least coming out to
join us. With good numbers of Alfa Romeos it is fun to watch from
both the driver‟s seat or the sidelines.
One of the best vantage points is from the turn stations. This is a
win, win, win since it allows you the chance to enjoy the event up
close, learn the lines the different drivers use, and helps provide a
safe event for the club. (Plus you get a Hoodie and lunch!)
To run your car at Pacific Raceways events, you‟ll need to have run
one of our Bremerton Schools or Lapping Days to give our Corsa
team a chance to understand your experience level. This allows
them to place you in the best run group. You will also need to en-
sure that car and driver are prepared… see last months newsletter
for some tips on preparation.
If you haven‟t signed up: www.NWARC.Motorsportsreg.com .
It‟s September already which means December is only three short months away. The annual Holiday Gala is scheduled as usual for the first Saturday (December 4) and will include some traditions as well as some new twists.
One tradition, the silent auction will be held as usual – but the new twist? Proceeds will be donated to charity instead of helping to subsidize the costs of the Gala. As usual, we are looking for donations for the silent auction and already have had a couple of folks step up. Terry Larson and Joan Lawson
donated two Alfa books they purchased at Vintage Motorbooks in Portland, Oregon. Logan Gray, proprietor of Vintage Motorbooks, in turn donated a very cool leather cap with Alfa Romeo logo. Tradition dictates that Gordy and Jessica will be donating jam and home-made baked goods, but this year Gordy is also giving a VERY special limited edition (one of 250) print of a
cutaway drawing of a Duetto signed by artist Shin Yoshikawa. Hopefully you will put on your thinking caps and come up with items that you have col-lected, made or perhaps some Alfa parts you found unused in your garage. Let‟s help a worthy cause and make this the most “profitable” silent auction
yet!!
This year we will again be registering via MotorSportsReg.com to make it easy to register, select your entrée, and pay for the evening. You should also be looking for an e-mail announcement via E-vite, similar to last year,
so you will be reminded via e-mail as we approach the date and cut-off for registration.
Let‟s gear up and get ready for another fun evening with lots of pictures and tales of the numerous 100-year parties that took place around the country this year!!!

Miniature Cars: The New TZ3
It is amazing how quickly some of
these manufacturers get their new
miniatures made. The modeler
named YOW produces a number of
unique Alfa Romeo model kits in
1:43 scale. Their latest is the new
TZ3, one off car shown at this years
Geneva Auto Show.
This adds to YOW‟s already fun lineup of Alfa Romeo kits like the
ITALDESIGN Taxi, Montreal Prototipo, and Scighera GT. All are available
from ABC Brianza at [email protected].

Bonneville Speed Week and Bonnie! By Jim Steck
The annual Bonneville trek has begun.
Changes this year include aerodynamic improvements... a
headrest fairing and wrap-around windscreen. The drag
coefficient of a roll cage is ~.60, same as a para-
chute. Our cage presents a small frontal area, but at 230
mph could reduce drag by as much as 75 hp. allowing an
increase in speed of 10 mph. Safety rules also required
gussets be added to the roll cage.
Except for a larger compressor wheel on the turbo, engine
changes are aimed at reliability and reducing head gasket
leakage. Stainless steel sleeves have been installed in the
exhaust ports extending into the head to the valve seats. The stainless is stiffer than alu-
minum and will help support the gasket surface. To make the most of the design the
sleeves were offset so no material was removed from the bottom of the port. The sleeve
will also work as an insulator, reducing the temperature of the aluminum, increasing its
working strength.
Last year's experience with rapid chain wear prompted several changes to reduce the
maximum chain loads. Guides have been made for the long unsupported run from the ex-
haust cam to the intermediate sprocket, across the top from cam to cam, and for the lower
chain. I couldn't find a good way to mount a guide on the slack side leading to the ad-
juster, so the roller has been retained, but the adjustment is now made with a screw.
Since the aluminum block and head expand more than the chain, the chain should have
some slack when assembled on the stand, determining the correct amount is the trick. I
will be able to set it while the engine is hot, then check the amount of slack when it cools.
There is also pressure lubrication for the upper and lower chains.
Aug 16: Qualified at a speed of 231.031 with 25 pounds boost.
Aug 17: Just after the first mile, one of the two ignition boxes quit working. An AEM en-
gineer happened to have the needed module. 1st timed mile 221.664, 2nd 231.454, 3rd
233.841. That‟s more like it!
Aug 18: Mile 1 221.639, Mile 2 229.439, Mile 3 230.590 for a new record of 232.215 MPH
which bests the existng time.
Aug 19: Mile 1 217.446, Mile 2 230.559, Mile 3 234.056 Crosswinds stayed about 10MPH
but the car drove straight except for a small wiggle which could have been a gust or soft
salt; I could almost take my hands off the wheel! The new wind screen and fairing have
gotten rid of all the buffeting which is nice.
Aug 20: Was not making any boost and could not get past 6500 rpm so I aborted the
run. Discovered the wastegate flange broke at the header. A team from The Ohio State
University let me use their heliarc welder. Felt low on power and then smoke from under
the hood at 228 mph. Not sure if it is the added boost this year, 28psi or something
other. Won't know for sure until I get it home and take it apart. Packed up, off the salt,
and headed east but thinking about the return trip.

Picnic and Birthday Bash Wrapup
The turnout was good for the Show, Drive, Picnic event on August 14th.
Many of us gathered for a very good breakfast at Ruby‟s Diner in Redmond
where we took over three booths in the back corner. Though the European
Exotics show at RTC was rather disappointing with only a handful of cars,
the Alfas were numerous.
Next, our drive wandered around 37 total miles of nice back roads over
Sammamish Ridge and down near Fall City. Then, we headed north follow-
ing farming access roads before passing through Carnation and Stillwater.
We then followed more twisty roads near Lake Joy, and bringing us down
the Cherry Valley Road into Duvall and the picnic spot.
Our picnic was at Taylor Park in Duvall. The place worked well since we had just enjoyed the hot weather drive
and now the tall trees provided shade and cool place to sit, talk, and eat BBQ. The club provided all the fixings
for the lunch including Hamburgers, potato salad, snacks, drinks, and even cake. The 100th birthday cake was
easily recognizable with the Alfa Romeo logo. The birthday present to the members was also that we each re-
ceived cool green polo shirts with the logo embroidered on them.
Thanks to all people who joined us for any / all parts of this great event. Also a special thanks to the Emersons
who brought a salad as well, to Weldon Hyde (Gordy‟s brother) for grilling, and Taylor and Madison Russell for
doing a great job of setting up and helping… without everyone‟s help, we would have been eating chips and dip.

New Book Review By Fred Russell
If you have picked up one of the new books celebrating Alfa Romeo‟s 100
years… send me the title, author, and what you thought of the book!
Book One: Alfa Romeo from 1910 to 2010, by Maurizio Tabucchi. (ISBN
978-88-7911-503-2) This hardbound, 319 page book is filled with great im-
ages and stories detailing the history and path that Alfa Romeo followed. It
provides minimal technical detailing but is heavy with insight about what so-
cial and economic issues guided decisions as the company went along. The
translation to English is a little choppy, but that helps to give the book a bit
of an authentic Italian flair. I highly recommend the book to hard core and
casual Alfisti alike.
Book Two: Alfa Romeo & Mille Miglia, by Andrea Curami (ISBN 978-88-
7911-504-9) With a number of Mille Miglia books on my shelf, I thought this
might have the same info, but what a pleasant surprise. This book has plenty
of photos and stories I have never seen before. It is 100% focused on the
Alfa Romeos, both factory and privateer that ran in the Mille Miglia races from
1927 through 1957. The 160 page hardbound book has both English and
Italian text inside. I enjoyed reading (as much as I‟ve made it so far) the
stories about the testing and the actual races. There is more details about
Pintacuda driving the BiPosto P3 that belongs to Greg Whitten. There are fun
details of teams testing aerodynamics of cars with yarn taped in a number of
places on the body. Fun and very readable.

Complete mechanical restoration includ-
ing all suspension - with poly bushings,
Rugh sport springs, Bilstein shocks, ad-
justable upper front arm.
Complete engine rebuild with Hannifer
Stage 1 head work with new race
springs and 11mm cams, 10:1 pistons,
Ingram HP Spica pump to match, Crane
Cam ignition, High voltage coil. Trans-
mission rebuilt by Ingram, Diff up-
graded to 4.10 for nice cruising. Interior
in decent shape with recent seat covers.
New top. Gas tank cleaned and sealed by Seattle radiator. Radio upgraded to
Alpine 4 x 65 W with 4 coax speakers discreetly mounted. This runs and
drives better than new and is ready for a late summer cruise as it sits. Even-
tually the new owner may want to address the body and paint as it is patina
rich but still looks good from 20 feet.
