Initial assessmentIt will help identify a learner’s skills against a level or levels within the national standards for literacy or numeracy.

It provides the information needed to decide a starting point for the learner.

It is the benchmark from which learning progress can be measured.

It can identify learners who may need extra support.

Learners should be encouraged to finish in their own time and not to rush.

50–60 minutes should be adequate.

They can take as long as they like, there are no time limits.
