Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Carers, ANZAC School Ceremony Our Grade 6 Student Councillors are preparing and presenting our school ANZAC Service tomorrow. Parents and members of our school community are invited to attend. The service will commence at 11.45am in the amphitheatre. ANZAC badges ($1.00, $2.00, $4.00 or $5.00), wristbands for $3.00 and poppies for $0.50, are now for sale in the office. Personal Belongings Brought to School As is the usual practice at the beginning of each term principals have been asked by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to remind the school community of the following:

Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, electronic games, calculators, toys, musical instruments, sporting equipment, and cars parked on school premises.

The Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.

Staff and students should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable

items to school. Grade 6 Camp Early this week our Grade 6 students enjoyed their Melbourne Camp. The camp included visits to the MCG, the Immigration Museum, Science Works, A.C.M.I, Eureka Tower and the Shrine. The students are to be congratulated for their behaviour, with many positive comments from members of the community about how they conducted themselves. Again I would like to acknowledge the assistance of parents and the work of teachers to ensure our students are able to enjoy these extra- curricular activities. See photo on page back. Supervision Please remember that the school yard is not supervised until 8.35am each morning. Students should not arrive at school before this time. If students arrive before this time on Wednesday and Thursday morning they will be expected to attend Morning Club in the stadium and Friday there is Breakfast Club from 8:10am to 8:35am in the amphitheatre. If they arrive before this time on Monday and Tuesday they will be expected to wait in the foyer until 8.35am.

Mothers/Special Friends’ Day Stall Our Parents and Friends’ group are conducting this stall for our students on Thursday 7

th May. A small group of parents

have been working very hard to prepare for this event. On behalf of the school community I would like to acknowledge this

group of parents who work tirelessly for our school, providing many opportunities for our students, and valued fundraising for our school.

Breakfast Club Breakfast Club will resume for Term 2 tomorrow morning. Again this program is made available by the generous efforts of a small number of volunteers. Every Friday we have a large number of students enjoying breakfast. Items available include juice, milo, fruit, yoghurt and toasties. On Friday morning breakfast is available for our students from 8:10am until 8:30am. Family Law Courts & Intervention Orders Families who have Family Law Court Orders or Intervention Orders are requested to provide a copy to the school so that the school can act in accordance with any orders. Family Law Court Orders stipulate the rights of both parties and enable us to act appropriately and lawfully. It is also appropriate that the school is in possession of the most recent Family Law Court Orders or Intervention Orders. School Uniform It is terrific to see almost all our students wearing their school uniform. As per our Uniform Policy, on the 1

st May

students are no longer required to wear broad brim/bucket hats. However, there will be still warm days when wearing a broad brim/bucket hat would be appropriate. As the weather becomes cooler, students will start wearing beanies and scarves. Please remember that it is a requirement that beanies and scarves are in school colours. The continued support of our school community in ensuring the wearing of school uniform is greatly appreciated. School Hours A reminder to all our parents/carers that the school yard is supervised from 8.35am in the morning and children should not be at school prior to this time. Bell times in the mornings are as follows: 8:35am Arrival Bell

8:40am Warning Bell

8:45am Roll Call Bell

Children are not to play on the play equipment before or after school. The Link The Link is the main form of communication with you and the school. The Link will be sent home with the youngest child in each family or look on www.kenningtonps.vic.edu.au. The Link is published on Thursdays. Sometimes, where we need to ensure that a piece of information gets to all of our school community, a notice will be repeated in a number of newsletters.

Grade 3 Derby Hill Excursion Last Tuesday, 14

th April 2015, the

Grade 3 students had the pleasure of spending the day at Derby Hill at the Blue Light Camp. We participated in 5 different activities over the day:

Archery

Rock Climbing

Mini Golf

Table Tennis and Giant Connect 4

Tug of War and Plank Walking

The weather wasn’t looking very good as we left school on the buses, but we were very lucky and by morning tea break the sun had even started to shine. Everybody had a great time and enjoyed the range of different activities. They were all lots of fun and some were a really good challenge. At archery we had to listen carefully to the instructions and remember all the steps to get the arrow to fire correctly. We needed to listen carefully to the feedback we got from the camp instructor and try and put into action what we were told to make improvements on each of our turns. In rock climbing many of us had to overcome our fear of heights to participate and work to encourage everybody when it was their turn. During mini golf we had to persist with the tricky holes and not get frustrated when the ball wouldn’t go in the hole. Playing tug of war and plank walking we had to work as a team and cooperate to achieve our goal. It was a great opportunity for us to mix up and spend time with old friends and use our getting along skills to make some new ones.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2015

The Premiers’ Reading Challenge for 2015 is now open. This is a great opportunity for everyone in the school to enjoy reading lots of fantastic books over the next few months.

To take part in the Challenge children must be registered. Registration forms may be obtained from this edition of the Link, class teachers or the school office. Children need a parent signature for permission to take part in the Challenge and to have their name printed in The Honor Roll. This will come online sometime after the Challenge finishes mid-September. Signed registration forms should be returned to the school office. Children will then be allocated their own user name and a password as soon as possible. The user name and the password will allow children and parents to access and update their personal reading records online. These online records also need to be validated as read by the Challenge Co-ordinator at school. Children in Prep to Grade 2 are challenged to read 30 books (20 books from the challenge booklist and 10 books of their own choice). Children in Grade 3 to Grade 6 are challenged to read 15 books (10 books from the challenge booklist and 5 books of their own choice). Lots of information about the Challenge and the booklists may be found on the Premiers’ Reading Challenge website: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc/ Registration form is at the back of the LINK.
