I started thinking of it as the “Hello, Goodbye” tour.

We were planning to visit our daughter, take a scenic route, maybe find a nice inn on the way and make a weekend out of it.

“How about on a K1300GT?” the guy at BMW offered.

“Sounds good,” I said.

And hello, old friend. I’d ridden the bike before.

The K1300GT was introduced as a 2009 model year update of the former K1200GT. The increase in displacement added a natural bump up in engine power. More importantly, the revised motor was tweaked for improved bottom-end torque.

The new-for-2009 bike also offered badged vents to break the slab-sided body panels, other modernized touch-ups, a full suite of dynamic technologies and ergonomic improvements that included, ye gods, a Japanese-style signal switch assembly at the left grip.

A few years ago, my wife Mary and I took a blue 2009 model on a 10-day roundabout trip to Ottawa, “to visit our money,” as a buddy of mine would say. And the K1300GT proved a likeable and reliable machine, a perfect compromise of traveling utility blended with the potent ability of still hitting

“Well, those are the options that come with the Exclusive Edition package,” I was told. “Except, umm, they’re not really optional.”

“Huh?” Turns out that BMW Canada is

offering the K1300GT only in Exclusive Edition flavour this year. With, well, sort of “compulsory” options, you might say.

It bumps the price up by $2,500. It also bumps up the content level significantly with a tire pressure control system, Automatic Stability Control (ASC), heated seats, on-board computer, cruise control, xenon headlight, a button-operated ESA system that allows for “Normal”, “Sport” and “Comfort” suspension adjustments on the fly, and a big colour-matched top case to complement the side panniers with a single-key locking system.

Now, this is where we get into the “goodbye” part of the story.

A cynic might say that BMW is simply clearing the parts shelves before dumping the K1300GT.

You see, the company just unveiled their new K1600 touring bikes – the K1600GT and the fully loaded K1600GTL.

And these brand new, top-of-the line tourers offer ground-breaking six-cylinder performance and features like an available adaptive powered headlight system that turns and tilts with the bike’s motion, Bluetooth connectivity, a GPS-ready audio system and a full suite of technologies beyond those available on the K1300GT.

There are two schools of thought here.

The K1300GT might be next up on BMW’s redesign list, allowing the

company to continue to offer an inline-four middleweight touring alternative for about $5K less than an equally loaded K1600GTL.

Or, the cynics could be right. BMW might simply scrap the K1300GT as an unnecessary distraction and a potential in-house, undercutting competitor to the bigger, premium K1600 series bikes. We’ll see.

But our recent trip reminded me how user-friendly the K1300GT is, the 160 hp inline-four offering ample acceleration without the low-speed awkwardness of

heavier tourers. The bike was a joy. We stuck to lonely country roads and

secondary highways, finding curves and corners wherever we could, taking our pleasure at easy-going, visor cracked-open speeds ranging between 80-100 kph.

The suspension was set on “Comfort” mode. Our route ebbed and flowed along a long lakeshore ride to our inn in a small port town.

Mary and I travel light. We usually claim a pannier each, and BMW’s big sidecases offered ample room, leaving the luxury of the topcase’s available space for extras.

And, with BMW’s handy quick-release system, you have the option of either stripping the bike down for a sporty outing, or treating the panniers like individual suitcases, packing them at leisure in your home or hotel room before snapping them back on the bike.

It beats trying to load up outside in the rain.

But we saw only sunshine, and on the second morning, I closed the sidecases and set off to take a few photos of the bike against the harbour backdrop while Mary dragged out her departure with a leisurely second cup of coffee at the inn.

Mornings are the best time to ride, when the winds are still and the air is cool and crisp.

And the K1300GT complemented the morning quiet, whispering through the side streets without the “look at me” loud pipe antics of some silly skull-bedecked chopper.

I explored the edges of the port, riding back and forth and, on one turnaround back to the centre of town, took the lazy U-turn option, cycling through the circular driveway of an extended care facility.

A man in a wheelchair was sitting in the garden in the middle of the paved circle, watching me as I rotated around him. Our eyes met as I was leaving and I felt an instant pang of regret, because I had noticed him too late.

Too late to nod, wave or somehow acknowledge him.

It’s funny how small indiscriminate moments can crystallize into sharp focus, into snapshot memories that we don’t get to choose. Somehow, they choose us.

I certainly hadn’t been cruising in search of melancholy, but as I rode down the hill, back towards the harbour, I couldn’t help but dwell on the man in the wheelchair, and feel the keen difference between our realities.

I could only hope that I had stirred memories instead of regrets and a sense of loss. I reminded myself that morning rides, heck, all rides, were to be cherished for the fleeting moments of time that they are.

And I hoped that our weekend on the K1300GT was not a “goodbye” tour.

Maybe more of an “Auf Wiedersehn” ride.

Which translates more optimistically into “see you again.”

BMW K1300GT Continued from Pg. B1The 2011 BMW K1300GT instrument package features a classic analogue tachometer and speedo bracketing a digital readout displaying a clock, trip, odometer and on-board computer information.

The cars were flying at Western Speedway last Saturday – literally!

Race fans enjoyed four classes of racing action, including Bombers, Demo Cars, Demo Trucks and Mini Figure 8s, along with the festivities associated with Elton John night.

Additional thrills were offered by special guest Mr. Dizzy (aka Mike Buse), who completed a car jump into a four-tier stack of cars, then took part in a van explosion with his “Combined Chaos” team from Munroe, Wa.

The night concluded with a total

destruction competition, won by No. 13, Johnny Earl.

Heath Cooper led the Bombers with a fast time of 19:614, but it was Aaron Cameron who took home the hardware from the Trophy Dash. Heat Race honours were split by Gilles Cyr, and Jamie Morgan.

But the 40-lap Bomber Main Event went to Troy Tarbuck, followed by Brandon Steen, Cooper, Morgan and Mark Lockhart.

The No. 27 car driven by Marc Parkinson ran a Demo Car fast time of

20:077 and Parkinson would add to the night’s honours with a second-place finish in the Trophy Dash and second Heat Race, and a win in the 16-lap Main Event.

Also on the Demo Car board for the night was Steve Miller, winner of the first Heat Race.

Fast time for the Demo Trucks went to No. 68 Richard Milne at 20:342, which he followed with a fourth in the Trophy Dash, and second-place finishes in the Heat Race and 12-lap Main Event. George Haywood posted wins for the Trophy Dash and Heat Race, but it was Kevin Knight who

captured the checkered flag for the Main Event.

Rounding out the evening’s racing was the Mini Figure 8s, where No. 93 Rhett Szevics brought home the fast time of 13:206.

Cam Wilkinson won the Trophy Dash and Kyle Rizok the first Heat Race, but it was Sean Welch who would win both the second Heat Race and the 40-lap Main Event, followed by Wilkinson, Doug Richens, Marie Haywood and Jeff Foley.

Service & AccessoriesJust what everyone needs: a bed for a pickup bed.

Available from California-based Pittman Products International, the patented AirBedz is available to fit most trucks on the road — and most bed lengths — and even includes cutouts to fit around the inner wheel housings. That gives you about five feet of width in the back of a full-sized pickup. AirBedz uses an integrated air coil system that Pittman says evenly distributes your weight across the 30-

centimetre-thick mattress. Although designed for the “outdoor enthusiast,” AirBedz would also work great for laying out in the sun on a warm day or for a tailgate party with friends. New features/options in the pipeline include hookup for an iPod and speakers as well as a rechargable built in pump. All that fun and functionality seems worth the US $200 (and up) pricetag, so call Pittman at 800-981-2339 or visit www.truckairbedz.com.

Emily Griffiths was amazed to learn her Ford convertible still exists.

The car drove into the driveway of the West Vancouver home and 88-year-old Emily Griffiths gasped, “I remember this car!”

She hadn’t seen her chartreuse convertible in nearly 60 years and had completely forgotten about it.

The delivery date was June 17, 1950, almost 61 years ago to the day. Her late husband, Frank Griffiths, brought the new Ford home from Fogg Motors in New Westminster. The sportsman green convertible with a black canvas top and matching interior was a knockout. But Emily Griffiths didn’t want it. “I told him to take it right back,” she recalls. “I didn’t like convertibles. They made my hair blow around and I always had to cover it.”

But the newlyweds kept the convertible.

Frank Griffiths was a chartered accountant who built a broadcasting empire and owned the Vancouver Canucks from 1974 until his passing in 1994. He loved the car with the top down and drove it when he wasn’t working in his downtown office. Emily even took a trip to California with the convertible.

Emily Ballard Griffiths is the daughter of veterinarian William Ballard, who pioneered high quality canned dog food in Canada with

products aptly named Dr. Ballard’s. The couple married in July, 1949.

The original Ford Motor Company of Canada Owner’s Service Policy lists Mrs. Emily Griffiths as the owner at 675 West Hastings St. in downtown Vancouver – Frank Griffiths’ office at the time. Handwritten notes list items that needed attention during the 5,000 mile servicing: Sticking gas pedal, rattle in the top, alignment, tighten body, play in steering, trunk rattle and clutch travel.

After four years, the Griffiths traded the car in at Roger Pontiac Buick Vauxhall next to West Vancouver’s Park Royal Shopping Mall. Mrs. Griffiths doesn’t remember what kind of car she got next but it wasn’t a convertible.

The arranged meeting for her to see her original Ford convertible took place in the West Vancouver driveway of John Skeans. Ten days before Christmas, in 1954, John Skeans was driving past Roger Motors and spotted the Ford convertible on the used car lot.

When the paperwork had been completed, he had purchased the green convertible for $1,395, less $1,020 for his trade in – a 1950 Meteor sedan. “I was selling mining equipment at the time and got a company car,” he recalls of that day. “I didn’t need the car I was driving so I traded it for the convertible to use as a family car.”

His late wife drove the convertible

for years. His three sons, who now run Skeans Engineering and Equipment – the business he started – learned to drive on the car and went to their high school proms in the convertible. The only mishap occurred when one of the sons put the top up and forgot to latch it. Once he hit the highway, the top went

down in a real hurry and it

hasn’t been up since.

John Skeans has kept his 1950 Ford garaged and well preserved for 57 years. It was used as a second car mainly in the summer and has travelled 93,000 miles – an average of 1,500 miles a year. He knew Emily Griffiths was the original owner but had never met her – until the reunion with the car.

In 1949, the Ford Motor Company introduced completely re-engineered and redesigned low priced V8-powered cars that would become cherished by generations. Known as the ‘shoebox

Ford’, the 1949 to 1951 models had front and rear fenders molded into the body, slab sides, windsplit taillights and a distinctive grille treatment with a ‘spinner’ centre.

Just over 50,000 Ford convertibles were produced in the 1950 model year. With pastel colors, matching leather interiors and power operated canvas

tops, the 1950 Ford convertibles were the most popular the company had ever built.

Later in the 1950s, this model would become popular with young owners who would customize their Fords by removing outside trim and adding fender skirts, dual exhausts and other custom touches. Most of these cars had colourful but short lives. It is highly unusual to find a completely unmolested original Ford convertible of this era.

John Skeans’ venerable Ford convertible hasn’t been driven

in about five years. He is considering having the car restored to new conditiion so the old convertible that has been very much a part of his family over the past 60 years will continue on as a family heirloom. “It’s just one of those family things that should be preserved,” he says.

Alyn Edwards is a classic car enthusiast and partner in Peak Communicators, a Vancouver-based public relations company. [email protected]
