By 1215, the closed sanctum of theNew Temple had been the Londonheadquarters of the Knights Templar for fifty years. That order
had another hundred years or so in residenceuntil it was suppressed. A few uncertain decadeslater the lawyers took up residence and soonformed the two societies which have remained to the present day, over nearly six-hundred and fifty years.
Nothing visible remains of the 1215buildings save the Round Church of theKnights, but there you can stand in the placewhere King John and his Barons, under theauspices of the Master of the Temple, thrashedout their disagreements and fixed the termsthat lead directly to the sealing of the CityCharter in May 2015, and foreshadowed theMagna Carta in the following month. Wherebetter then, in this 800th anniversary year of

the Magna Carta to engage with the world andthe men who demanded, granted and draftedthat momentous document.
To mark the connection of their church tothis great anniversary, and as part of theLondon Open House Weekend on 19 and 20September 2015, the Societies of Inner Templeand Middle Temple have come together to openthe Temple Church and much more to thepublic. In the Church there will be a specialexhibition on the theme of the Magna Cartawhich includes a cast of the effigy from thetomb of King John and casts of the effigies ofthe Earls of Pembroke, father and son, whowere intimately involved with both sides in thenegotiations.
Outside the church, the Inns’ estates will beopen to the public, giving a unique insight intotwo societies, which together with the otherInns of Court, have nurtured, indeed, fannedthe flames of Magna Carta over the centuriesand today continue to help defend the libertyof the subject against the power of the stateand to ensure the rule of law by supportinglearning and integrity in the administration ofjustice and the practice of the law.
The great legal libraries of the Inns will beopen to visitors. They house some of the finestcollections of legal source material in theCommon Law World and they have adaptedcompletely to the 21st Century environment ofon-line legal research. The library staff will beon duty to explain how these modernchallenges are being met and to talk about theInn’s printed and manuscript treasures.
The Halls and other great rooms of theInns, which are not usually open to the public,will be accessible and a ticketed luncheon willbe available in Inner Temple Hall - contact theInner Temple Treasury Office for bookingdetails.
The other buildings of the Inns include fineexamples of our national architectural heritagefrom the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries.From Wat Tyler’s revolt in 1381, through aseries of disastrous fires, including the GreatFire of London in 1666 (which was halted inthe Inner Temple), to the Blitz in 1941, theTemple has suffered devastation but has alwaysrisen again and on most occasions leadingarchitects of the day have been engaged. Theseinclude men whose hands can be seen in StPaul’s Cathedral, the Palace of Westminster,and the British Museum. Visitors will be helpedto identify the most interesting buildings of the
Inns and their architects, and will be able tovisit a number of sets of chambers to get a feelfor the working environment of the Inns.
To help the visitors understand theeducation and training work of the Inns (whichunderpins their entire reason for being), theyare together demonstrating the work which isdone in training advocates. The Royal Courtsof Justice will be the authentic setting for mocktrials, moots and advocacy training sessionswhich the public will be able to observe and attimes participate in. This is an importantopportunity to showcase the vital work of theInns, carried out pro bono by our membersprimarily out of the collegiate sense fostered bythe Inns.
Our gardens will be open and in theirsummer prime. This year visitors will also beable to see for the first time our Magna Cartaplanter, which will complete the trio of plantersat the south end of Paper Buildings. It willcarry the arms of King John, ArchbishopStephen Langton and each of the barons rangedagainst the King in 1215.
Planning is well advanced, but volunteersare still needed. If you fancy being a witness ina Mock Trial or helping in the RCJ pleasecontact Alice Pearson, Magna Carta ProjectManager. Greeters, marshals and tour guidesfor the Inn are also need. Training will beprovided.
Many people will remember the highlysuccessful open house the Inns held to markthe 400th anniversary of our charter. I have nodoubt that this will match or exceed that and Iam sure getting involved will be its ownreward.

THE INNER TEMPLE HOSTSTHE EUROPEAN CIRCUIT
On 25 February 2015, the Innhosted a joint meeting with theEuropean Circuit. MasterTreasurer welcomed a group of
some 50 or so benchers, practitioners, pupilsand students with an interest in EuropeanUnion and/or European Convention law andpractice. The motivation behind the drinksreception was to foster greater links betweenthe newest of the circuits and the Inner Temple.
The European Circuit was founded in 2001,largely due to the efforts of Master Vaughan. Itwas the first new circuit to be recognised fornearly 300 years. The European Circuit has ageographical scope which is co-extensive withthe jurisdictions of the Court of Justice of theEuropean Union and the European Court ofHuman Rights. But the circuit also aims tofulfil the purpose of any circuit: first, to allowall members of the circuit to get to know oneanother and be a source of practicalinformation to each other; secondly, to act asan informal regulator of discipline; and thirdly,to discharge a lobbying function on behalf ofits members with the Bar’s regulatory bodiesand Government.
The multinational nature of its work andthe geographical spread of its membership havemeant that the circuit lacks the handful ofnatural focal points for meetings from whichthe other circuits benefit. The circuit holds aconference each year in a different European
city. But with a significant number of itsmembers based in London, the circuit naturallyis dependent on meetings in London andelsewhere in the UK to enable members of thecircuit to meet with each other, hold seminars,and talks, and interact with students and pupilswith an interest in EU and ECHR law.
The Inn has been seeking to foster closerrelations with each of the circuits. TheEuropean Circuit is no exception. A circuitdinner was going to be difficult to arrange. ButBarbara Dohmann QC, the leader of thecircuit, was keen to hold a joint event. It wasdecided that this should be aimed primarily atstudents and pupils of the Inner Temple. TheInn and the circuit accordingly decided to holda drinks reception, to which a large number ofstudents and pupils were invited. Students andpupils of the Inn were able to meet withBenchers and practitioners with experience inEuropean law.
The event was a great success. Students andpupils were able to ask practitioners how theymight advance their interest in European law.Practitioners (unsurprisingly) shared warstories from their cases, be they triumphs ordisasters. It was also a great opportunity forold friends and colleagues to catch up. BarbaraDohmann QC thanked the Inn for hosting theevent. She expressed the hope that members of

the circuit would continue to take part in jointevents with the Inn in future. Judging from theenthusiastic response from those attending, thispromises to be a collaboration that will bedeveloped further in years to come. A numberof Inner students attending the event have sincebecome student members of the circuit.
Membership of the circuit is open to bothbarristers in the geographical area of the circuitand to lawyers from those jurisdictions. It isopen to lawyers in independent practice andemployed lawyers, whether employed bygovernments, institutions or companies. The
European Circuit is keen to ensure that thetraditional roles of circuits are continued.There is clearly much to be said forpractitioners with interests in the same fieldsgetting together. LONDON LEGAL WALKFor the 5th consecutive year, the Inner TempleTeam, led by Master Cryan, supported theLondon Legal Support Trust by walking the 10K London Legal Walk on Monday 18 May. The trust raises much needed funds toprovide free legal advice and support to the mostvulnerable amongst us. The economic downturnhas increased poverty and reduced supportservices. Since the 2013 removal of much of thelegal aid for humanitarian or social welfare legaladvice, funding for the advice centres hasreduced. The Trust needs our help to raise thefunds essential to enable the poorest and mostvulnerable to have access to justice.

The historic Inner Temple estate isgetting an upgrade to help secure itsfuture. The Inner Temple, one of the
Inns of Court, has recently installed 32 solarpanels - also known as solar photovoltaics (PV)- on the roofs of the Grade II listed King’sBench Walk, home to a number of barristerchambers.
Sub-Treasurer, Patrick Maddams, said:“Sitting in the heart of London the InnerTemple’s history and estate stretches backnearly a thousand years. We need to ensure ourbuildings are here for the future and fit formodern legal practice. That is why we arelooking after the sustainability of our buildingswhile maintaining the historic nature andsetting that they are part of.”
Nicholas Waring, Capital ProgrammeManager of the Inner Temple added that:
“This project required careful planning toprotect the historic fabric of the Building whilealso ensuring the views of King’s Bench Walkare unchanged. This project will allow us tosupply our tenants and the Inner Templegardener’s office with electricity and alsobenefit from the Governments ‘Feed-in-Tariff’”
The solar panels have been installed on 12 and 13 King’s Bench Walk, which are bothGrade II and were built in 1829-30. Thesouthern return of No. 13 marks the northernbank of the Thames, before the construction ofVictoria Embankment. 12 and 13 King’s BenchWalk is the work of former surveyor of InnerTemple, Sir Robert Smirke.
Inner Temple follows work done atClarence House, the London residence of His Royal Highness Prince Charles, to havePV panels installed on its roof.

ABOUT THEKALISHER TRUST
The Trust is a legal charity supportingpeople from diverse backgrounds toobtain a career at the criminal Bar. The
fundamental objective is to help those whowould otherwise be unable to come (or stay) tothe Bar because of financial need. The currentcost of the Bar course is now around £18,000and even if they are successful in obtainingpupillage or tenancy their future is stillfinancially uncertain in publicly funded work.
Historically the Trust provided twoscholarships a year which paid for the entiretyof the course. Many Kalisher scholars havegone from their award to pupillage andtenancy. We support them every step of theway. Without the Trust these individuals wouldhave entered the profession many thousands ofpounds in debt and may not have been able tocontinue into positions in chambers.
We no longer run the scholarshipprogramme. Now the Trust assists those whohave already completed the Bar course byoffering paid internships at a number ofgovernment organisations (the NationalProbation Service, Criminal Cases ReviewCommission or specialist police units) and legalcharities (Justice or the Centre for CapitalPunishment Studies). This way we can ensurethat the right people can stay in the professiononce they have started.
In addition, the Trust has recently expandedits scope to those at a much earlier stage intheir education. We now regularly run aschools programme called the Art of
Persuasion. Trustees and supporters of theTrust’s work attend schools across the countryfor mornings spent working with studentsbetween the ages of 15 and 17 years old.
The aim of the programme is to encouragecritical thinking, analysis and public speakingskills. Often we work with students who havenever spoken a word in public and areextremely anxious to the point they find it hardto voice opinions in a small group of six.Before the end of the morning they have allperformed advocacy in front of approximately50 of their peers. The transformation isastonishing.
Further, we now run mooting and debatingworkshops and a full day programme aimed tohelp older students with their universityapplications. The recipients of theseprogrammes are not the privileged students athigh performing privately funded schools butstudents at schools in Grimsby, Corby,Skegness and other harder to reach locationswhere they have little to no access to Londonlawyers and judges.
Finally we have also begun a programmeaimed at very young students called the Trial ofMr Bear (a Goldilocks theme) at the CentralCriminal Court. The “actors” are seniormembers of the Bar including Queens Counseland senior judiciary. All of our programmesrely on the voluntary support of the Trusteesand supporters who give up substantialamounts of their time and effort.

INTERNATIONAL VISITS
Rosa Graves (called 1975) and Alya Yamakoglu(called 2014) were two of the judges whoparticipated in this year’s international mootingcompetition for central and eastern Europeanuniversity law teams. 12 countries wererepresented. Eleanor Sharpston, AdvocateGeneral at the European Court of Justicepresided on issues to do with large scalemigration within the EU.
The venues were the Supreme Court andParliament building of Georgia.
The Sub-Treasurer was also there to
participate in a “Magna Carta” conferenceorganised by the British Embassy and held atthe Free University of Tbilisi. He comparedGeorgia’s new Constitution with the greatdocument and the European Convention onHuman Rights. The Georgians seem to haveadopted the best of both, not least the freedomof its Autocephalus Orthodox Church fromstate control, a clause in Magna Carta that hadKing John “gnashing his teeth, scowling in hiseyes, and gnawing at sticks from trees such wasthe grief and rage he felt.”

The Inner Temple also hosted both of theLondon launch events for the Social MobilityFoundation’s Aspiring Professionals Programme,welcoming over 800 secondary school studentsto the Inner Temple.
As part of our ongoing support for theSutton Trust, the Inner Temple hosted a dinnerin Hall for 157 Pathways Plus students andmentors from across the legal sector. PathwaysPlus is a university student programme and isan extension of Pathways to Law.
The Inn has recently hosted three outreachevents aimed at widening access to the Bar tocapable sixth form students. On 18 Februaryand, again, on 1 April, we welcomed more than100 students participating in the nationalPathways to Law programme to a day-longseminar comprising a presentation on pursuing acareer at the Bar, a panel discussion on life as abarrister in different practice areas, and groupcase law and plea in mitigation exercises. TheSutton Trust’s Pathways to Law is aimed athigh-achieving state school students with nofamily history of higher education and supportsthem through a two year legal programme inconjunction with leading law faculties. Throughour work with the organisation, the Inn hassupported young people across England, fromregions such as Bristol, Essex, Exeter, Leeds,Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, Southamptonand Warwick.
On 27 March, we were also pleased todeliver our outreach programme to a group of30 sixth formers engaged in King’s CollegeLondon’s K+ programme, a wideningparticipation endeavour designed to supportyoung people from underrepresented groups inaccessing higher education. The success ofthese events is largely attributable to thegenerosity of the barristers and judges whooffer their time and expertise. Therefore wewould like to thank everyone who participated:

No doubt when you first saw the title of thisarticle, you assumed this was an announcementthat the Honourable Society of the InnerTemple would be having some sort of Venetianthemed evening. We’re sorry to disappoint…
THE CASEThe case was first published back in Octoberand concerned the dismissal of an employee,Karl K, for a criticism of creationist theoriesduring a bowling match with his friend Laura,who later posted his opinion on Facebook. Theimaginary employer Looklikes Inc. viewed hisstatement as constituting a breach of their strictethical code, one of the requirements of whichwas not to criticise religion. Having exhausteddomestic remedies, Karl K applied to theEuropean Court of Human Rights, asserting aviolation of his Article 8 and 9 rights. Theintersection of law and religion is highlytopical, and whilst Eweida and Others v. theUnited Kingdom shed some light on theCourt’s approach to freedom of religion in theworkplace, this was sadly not a light that bodewell for the Government’s position, which wewould be defending.
There were many issues to consider in thecase – was the applicant’s Article 9 right tofreedom of thought, conscience and religion
engaged by his expression of criticism ofcreationist theories to a friend at a bowlingmatch? Would the applicant’s Article 8 rightto respect for his private life be engaged bytreatment of him arising from a conversationwith a friend at a public function and/or theposting by his friend of an opinion of his ona social networking site such as Facebook?
With a rather wooly understanding of theEuropean Court’s treatment of these issues,we set about answering these questions.After two months of research, drafting andheated debate, our written briefs weresubmitted. In mid-December, we learnedthat we had made the cut. What followedwere a series of trips to Francis TaylorBuilding to visit our version of the GreatRichardo Sorrento, Ned Westaway, in orderto practise our submissions.
PLEADING ORALLY: 9-11 MARCH 2015Following a flight over the snow-coveredAlps we arrived on Sunday afternoon andwere fortunate enough to have just enoughtime to see some of Venice before eventsbegan the following day.
On Monday, we were greeted by areception and lecture from some of the most

esteemed academics in the field. Thereafter, wehad the rest of the afternoon to adjust oursubmissions in light of the new contextualframework, addressing the additional questionsthat had been posed by the judges. The nextday, we arrived at the court via waterbus – ourinitial plans of arriving via gondola having beenunfortunately dashed. The headquarters of theStudium Generale Marcianum in the stunningbasilica of Santa Maria della Salute, with its17th century exterior facing the Grand Canal,played host to the competition and was awelcome contrast to the glamour of theprevious night spent redrafting oursubmissions in our hostel’s broom cupboard,with a rather sketchy WiFi connection.
On Tuesday, the hearings began with fourteams pleading in the European Court ofHuman Rights in the morning, followed by anafternoon in the US Supreme Court. Asidefrom witnessing an alternative legal approachto the case, watching the US hearings alsoallowed us to see a different, and much moreconfrontational, style of advocacy. For ourown parts, we had to adjust to the EuropeanCourt’s presentation style, which involved 30minutes of submissions with no judicialintervention, followed by five minutes in whichto answer questions from the judges.
Although we were daunted by the prospectof competing against a team that featured botha practising barrister and a solicitor, as well asof relying on a case in which one of the judgeshad acted (Master Hill [Mark Hill QC] inEweida), after an incredibly tense resultsannouncement we were thrilled to learn that
we would be taking home the prize of €500 (inthe form of a rather oversized novelty cheque)and a trophy to be proudly displayed in theInner Temple. Our thanks go to all involved inthe organisation of the moot, and of course tothe Inn for giving us the opportunity toexplore an increasingly topical area of law,from both a European as well as an Americanperspective, in such an incredible location.

EDUCATION & TRAINING DEPARTMENTNEW PRACTITIONERS’ ADVOCACY& ETHICS COURSEThe E&T Department held the first of itsannual Advocacy and Ethics courses for NewPractitioners in March and April. The coursehas been revised for 2015, with the Ethicssession now forming a separate evening at theInn. This took place on 25 March, allowing theNPs to tackle a series of hypothetical ethicalproblems with the assistance of real solicitorsand established practitioners. The advocacyelement of the course took place at WottonHouse as usual, from 17-19 April. 42 junior
barristers, split into civil and criminal groups,were given the opportunity to cross-examinereal expert medical witnesses and also took partin an appellate advocacy case, being video-reviewed by senior advocacy trainers. Theafter-dinner speech on the Saturday night wasgiven by The Hon Mrs Justice McGowan. TheE&T Department would like to thank all thosewho gave up their weekend to teach, speak orattend the sessions as observers.
On 28 March 2015, the Inn hosted its annualAdvocacy and Pupillage Applications Session.This event is aimed at BPTC graduates who areseeking pupillage and have already secured atleast one pupillage interview. The event wasattended by 32 BPTC graduates and sessionswere led by pupils, new practitioners andestablished practitioners.
Participants were required to submit anexample pupillage application and legal CV inadvance of the course. On the day itself,participants practised their advocacy skills,took part in mock pupillage interviews and hadtheir pupillage applications and legal CVsreviewed on a one-to-one basis.
Participants commented in their feedbackthat “all three sessions were incredibly helpfuland gave me the motivational boost I needed”and “it was by far the most valuable careers-based event I have attended.”

GIFT TO THE INN:MARSHALL HALL’S DESKThe Inn has recently been given the desk thatbelonged to Sir Edward Marshall Hall, whenhe was in chambers in 3 Temple Gardens, byMaster Hidden (Sir Anthony Hidden QC).
Marshall Hall was admitted as a member tothe Inn in 1880 and was called to the Bar in1883. He took silk in 1898, was elected toParliament in 1900 and became a Bencher in1910. He was known as “The Great Defender”because of his passionate defence of murdersuspects in high profile cases.
In November 1888 Marshall Hall joined thechambers of Sir Charles Hall QC on the firstfloor of 3 Temple Gardens and remained thereas a tenant until his death in 1927. His deskremained and was acquired by Master Hiddenwhen he joined the same chambers in about1960. The desk went with Master Hidden whenthe chambers moved to New Square, Lincoln’sInn and subsequently when he was appointedto the High Court bench, it accompanied himto the Royal Courts of Justice, until hisretirement in 2003.
The desk now has a permanent home inRoom E of the Library.

SIR BANISTER FLIGHT FLETCHER (1866-1953)
BARRISTER & ARCHITECT
He may not enjoy the samereputation with lawyers as hiscontemporary, Edward MarshallHall, but in the world of
architecture he is a legend. Banister Fletcherwas both an architect and later a barrister,being called by Inner Temple 1908, andadvising for a while on London Building Act disputes.
His distinguished career saw him designmodernist projects such as the Gillette factory(1936) and a range of suburban buildings fromapartments to schools. He wrote several booksincluding a study of Andrea Palladio, he taughtarchitecture and was elected President of theRoyal Institute of British Architects(RIBA) between 1929 to 1931. He was aformidable collector and bequeathed his books,drawings and slides to the RIBA, now housedin its Banister Fletcher library.
However it is as the author of A History ofArchitecture on the Comparative Method, firstpublished in 1896 and re-issued in no less than19 later editions (and several languages) that heis so widely known. It has been described asthe most authoritative and up to date history ofthe world’s architecture ever produced. Richlyillustrated with plates, drawings andphotographs (the 1905 edition has 2000illustrations) it has become essential reading forstudents, craftsmen and amateurs alike.
The Temple Church gets three honourablementions while no less than 150 other templesare cited from Abu-Simbel to Zeus.
One admirer recently described the volumeas “gloriously, and frustratingly,invaluable”. Would that any barrister hadreceived such a commendation from the Bench!
Jane Duncan, incoming President of RIBA,has said that Fletcher’s contribution to thehistory, philosophy and understanding ofarchitecture in all its forms cannot be
overestimated. The RIBA is at work inpreparing the 21st edition for publication in2017. It will be available in an interactiveformat for a new online audience worldwide.
One final volute to an extraordinary career.For many years Banister Fletcher lived at 1 King’s Bench Walk in an apartment that waslater occupied by Clement Attlee, Bencher andPrime Minister from 1945 to 1951. It is saidthat no less a person than Sir ChristopherWren remodelled its entrance after damagefrom the Great Fire of London in 1666.

The infamous relationship betweenHH Asquith and Venetia Stanleywill be explored by MasterPopplewell in the Summer History
Society lecture on the 1 July. The Prime Minister and his Mistress is the
astonishing story of the love affair between 60year old Asquith and 22 year old VenetiaStanley. Between 1912 and 1915 he wrote overfive hundred and fifty of the most passionatelove letters to her. His to her were publishedsome years ago - hers to him no longer exist.He would write to her every day, sometimestwice a day, sometimes three times a day andoccasionally four times. In cabinet a messengerwould come in with a letter from Venetia.Asquith would read the letter, write an answer,and send it off while the rest of the cabinetcontinued their discussions. They regularlywent out for long drives and stayed awaytogether. In peace time he sought her advice onpolitical matters and during the war confidedall sorts of top secret information to her. Thus,“We have just finished Cabinet. Winston and Ihave decided we will invade the Dardenellesnext week. It is secret so don’t tell anyone.”
Asquith was married twice. First to Helen,by whom he had five children, and then toMargot who gave birth also to five children,
two of whom survived.After a distinguishedacademic career, he struggled at the Bar untilfinally appearing in a number of famous caseslike the Carbolic Smoke Ball Company. At 40 he became Home Secretary and in 1908Prime Minister.
In 1915 Venetia married Edwin Montagu(Asquith’s private secretary) and converted toJudaism. It was an unhappy marriage. Shefound him physically unattractive. She had adaughter of whom Edwin was not the father,and later she became the mistress of LordBeaverbrook and Lord Dudley.
When the letters were published RoyJenkins described the affair as an epistolaryrelationship. The book suggests a moreintimate relationship to be found in the finalclue. 1912 Margot was told she must have nomore children. Is it therefore in anywaysurprising if Asquith, now banished from thematrimonial bed, having already sired 10children, should find comfort and pleasure inthe 22 year old Venetia Stanley.
The lecture will be followed by a Q&Asession. An informal bowl food dinner will alsobe available for those who wish to continue thediscussion afterwards.

Recently in an interview with the GardenDesign Journal, I made a fleeting andinsincere comment about how English
country gardens seem to be all about roses andNepeta and that Christopher Lloyd’s garden,Great Dixter, is an exception. However, when Isaw the proof of the interview, I was horrified toread that my tongue-in-cheek comment aboutEnglish country gardens was included – I veryquickly got it excluded because it is unjust anduntrue. Nonetheless, I do feel that we pay a lotof attention to roses – I guess because theirbeauty fascinates us in some way more thanother flowering shrubs.
I have to admit that for the last five years myfascination with roses was limited to trying toselect healthy and repeat-flowering roses for theInner Temple Rose Border, which won’t requirea weekly spraying requiem of fungicide to keepblack spot and mildew at bay. I am very pleased
that I have come to a point, where I can whole-heartily and with full conviction recommend atleast ten disease-resistant and repeat-floweringcultivars for a rose garden. Equally sharingplaces ten to five are Rosa ‘Corvedale’,‘Generous Gardener’, ‘Geoff Hamilton’, ‘LouiseOdier’ and ‘William Shakespeare’. Place fourtakes Rosa chinensis, a rare species, that canbloom with is deep vivid pink flowersthroughout the year and tolerates some shadeand is evergreen in our climate. Third place hasto go to Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’, it can betrained as a climber or shrub rose, its darkthornless foliage complements the soft pinkflowers that don’t cease when the deadheadingregime has elapsed and it is the healthiest one onmy recommendation list. Second place: Rosa xodorata ‘Mutablis’, we grow this beauty for theunusual qualities of its flowers, which bloomcontinuously from spring until frost. The single

cupped flowers open a honey-yellow, and thenthey become coppery-pink, then watermelon,and finally a rich mahogany. The foliage isreddish purple, disease-resistant, and like Rosachinensis is also evergreen in our climate andtherefore lends itself to be used in bouquetseven when it is not flowering. The gardens’ teamfavourite and the top of my list is a traditionalEnglish Old Rose ‘Darcy Bussel’. Like theballerina, this hybrid displays great stamina,flowers freely with excellent continuity and isvery healthy. The rich crimson coloured blooms,which become flushed with mauve before thepetals fall, form a beautiful large rosette.
Despite their great health record, we stillhave adopted a spraying regime – however it isan organic and holistic one. Throughout thewinter, we apply sulphur, which is a naturalremedy for blackspot and powdery mildew andencourages blemish-free growth. As soon as theroses break through the leaf bud we starttreating the foliage with a biodegradable andnon-toxic plant invigorator, which will keepaphids and whitefly at bay and improves thevigour, which in turn helps them to stay healthy.
You might have noticed that myrecommendation of roses only ranges from paleto dark pink colour shades, which I chosedeliberately to ensure that the different rosesharmonise with each other and with the under-planting of grey-silver foliage and pale blueflowers of Nepeta racemosa ‘Walkers Low’, themost compact catmint cultivar, which is a greatpartner to any rose.
I also must admit, I do very much lookforward to enjoying our rose border this year,because I now can rest assured that all ourselected roses will stay healthy and, togetherwith the Nepeta, gives us some of our own doseof the soft, romantic, English garden look in theburgeoning months of summer.
This spring the Garden Team started a newventure in offering unique and seasonalfloral bouquets for sale, which are grown,picked and arranged at the Inner TempleGarden. We are passionate about localorganic British cut flowers and feel that thisdeveloping and sustainable industry deservesincorporation into our day-to-day lives, likeorganic vegetables in our weekly shop. Ifyou would like to purchase some beautifulfresh flowers from the Inner Temple garden,bouquets are available to view and order from the Treasury Office.

DAVID MCLEARY joinsthe Inn as Porter, takingover from Jim Stephenson.David worked for 26 yearsworked in HM Forces(Infantry) and morerecently in security roles for
G4S and Serco. We very much look forward toworking with him.
JOANNA ZAWADAjoined the Collector’sDepartment as AccountsAssistant on a permanentbasis in April havingpreviously covered EmmaPrayer’s maternity leave.Joanna is responsible for processing invoices and salaries for the Inn and the Temple Music Foundation. We aredelighted that she will continue to perform this important role.
NIAMH MCCARTHYjoins the Catering Team asSales and Events Co-ordinator which is a newrole for the department.Niamh’s role will includehandling sales enquires and
managing events, both internally andexternally. Niamh previously worked atDoubleTree by Hilton, where she was anEvents Sales Executive. Niamh is passionateabout languages and did a year’s Internship atSteigenberger Airport Hotel, Frankfurt,Germany. We are thrilled to have her on board.
MATTHEW KURTZ joins the Inner Temple asour new Trainee Gardener,having successfullycompleted a two yearapprenticeship in AmenityHorticulture withEdinburgh Zoo. As part of our two yeartraineeship at the Inner Temple Garden,Matthew will also be studying for his RHSCertificate – Level 2 at Capel Manor College.We are very pleased to welcome Matthew toour small garden team.
